Join us as we celebrate our 200th Adderley Positive Research Incubator presentation!

Research is the heart of Positive Organizational Scholarship (POS), and we want to make sure that we support each other in developing high quality research. To that end, we created the Adderley Positive Research Incubator for sharing and encouraging POS-related research ideas that are at various stages of development.

Since our first gathering in 2004, the Adderley Positive Research Incubator has enabled 120+ researchers in the field of Positive Organizational Scholarship to share research ideas while still in development. This safe space encourages the development of high-quality research and allows for positive, constructive feedback on projects still in progress.

About the talk
This presentation will provide an overview of survey data and intervention research by the Healthy Minds Network, a large-scale research initiative to improve understanding of mental health and help-seeking in adolescent and young adult populations, particularly college students.

About Eisenberg
Daniel Eisenberg is S. J. Axelrod Collegiate Professor of Health Management and Policy in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan, where he is also affiliated with the Population Studies Center and the Comprehensive Depression Center.

His training is in economics and mental health services research. His broad research goal is to improve understanding of how to invest effectively in the mental health of young people, particularly college students. He directs the Healthy Minds Network (HMN) for Research on Adolescent and Young Adult Mental Health (www.healthymindsnetwork.org), which administers the Healthy Minds Study, a national survey study of student mental health and related factors.

The MIW program offers an opportunity each year for 45-50 undergraduates from any major to spend a semester (Fall or Winter) in Washington D.C. Students combine coursework with an internship that reflects their particular area of interest (such as American politics, international studies, history, the arts, public health, economics, the media, the environment, science and technology). The semester in Washington is action packed. Students work four days a week, attend an elective one evening a week and a research course on Friday mornings. They spend their weekends exploring the city and taking in cultural events. Most leave Washington longing to return.

Students are free to pursue internships of their own choosing. They are coached in internship searching strategies as part of a prep class that is taken the semester before going to D.C. Students have interned at the White House, the Smithsonian, CNN, Greenpeace, CBS, Public Defender’s Service, Washington Institute for Near East Policy, NAACP, The Brookings Institution, American Enterprise Institute, National Defense University, Partnership for Public Service, Center for American Progress, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and many others.

"Development of Neighborhood Landscapes with Urban Ecosystem Services"

Neighborhood landscapes are the quintessential forms of landscapes in most cities, but because of their small sizes, they seldom gain the attention of designers. Dr. Puay Yok will share the development of guidelines for the design of neighborhood landscapes, based on the concept of urban ecosystems services in the high-density, high-rise environment in Singapore.

Jacquelyn Taylor, Ph.D., RN, PNP-BC, FAHA, FAAN, will discuss steps she has taken in her research career using genomic and environmental methods to unravel hypertension health disparities in African American women. Dr. Taylor’s current work exams the gene-environment and DNAm-environment interactions of perceived racism and discrimination, parenting stress, and maternal mental health on blood pressure on African American mothers and their young children. Dr. Taylor will also share reflections about her recent study on the genomics of lead poisoning in Flint, MI. She was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) by President Barack Obama, the highest honor awarded by the federal government to scientists and engineers, where she examines next-generation sequencing-environment interactions on blood pressure among African Americans. Her long-term goals are to develop nursing interventions to reduce and prevent -omic-environment risks that contribute to health disparities for common chronic conditions among underrepresented minority populations across the lifespan in the United States and vulnerable populations abroad. Dr. Taylor is the inaugural Vernice D. Ferguson Professor in Health Equity at New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing.

ELPP Lecture Series: Opportunity and Action in Federal Environmental Policy (January 28, 2019 11:50am) https://events.umich.edu/event/60186 60186-14846879@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, January 28, 2019 11:50am
Location: Jeffries Hall
Organized By: Michigan Law Environmental and Energy Law Program

The Trump administration has drastically changed how federal environmental policy is shaped and implemented. Beyond this obvious headline, there are much bigger trends that will influence the environment and economy in the years ahead. Mr. Parker will discuss where the real action and opportunity will be in this space in the coming years.

This lecture is free and open to the public.

Doug Parker is a recognized leader in environmental risk and compliance who advises clients on environmental policy, public sector strategies, enforcement actions and crisis management.

At E&W Strategies, he serves clients by providing strategic direction in the areas of corporate and individual risk, crisis mitigation and environmental compliance. He brings a unique perspective to his role as the former Director of EPA's Criminal Investigation Division where he oversaw matters ranging from the investigation into the Deepwater Horizon disaster to the Volkswagen emissions cheating scandal.

Mr. Parker counsels clients on navigating environmental, health and safety compliance challenges across multiple industries, including the automotive, energy, chemical, utility and manufacturing sectors. He also provides guidance to law firms, consulting firms, and financial entities that are managing compliance matters or are engaged in due diligence with environmental risk implications. Additionally, Mr. Parker serves as a subject matter expert for those seeking to understand and navigate the environmental and natural resource policy space or who may be advocating at the federal level on critical policy and enforcement issues.

Mr. Parker speaks regularly to industry groups on strategies for navigating environmental risk and has shared his insights on CNN, National Public Radio, as well as in The New York Times and numerous other media outlets.

A conversation and book talk with Harold Koh on his new book: The Trump Administration and International Law (January 28, 2019 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/59600 59600-14754553@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, January 28, 2019 6:00pm
Location: Weill Hall (Ford School)
Organized By: Weiser Diplomacy Center

Join John Ciorciari, director of International Policy Center and Weiser Diplomacy Center, for a conversation with Harold Koh not only about his book The Trump Administration and International Law.

This book answers one of the most pressing questions of our time: who is winning the battle of Donald Trump versus international law? This clear and comprehensive tour d'horizon, by one of America's leading international lawyers, explains why, in his first two years, Trump is not "winning" in his effort to resign the U.S. from global leadership, and how the Resistance is blunting his initiatives.

The book surveys many fields of international law: immigration and refugees, human rights, climate change, denuclearization, trade diplomacy, relations with North Korea, Russia and Ukraine, and America's "Forever War" against Al Qaeda and the Islamic State and its challenges in Syria.

Offers a counter-strategy to preserve the rule of law against the Trump Administration's many initiatives to change the nature of America's relationship with international law and its institutions.

Harold Hongju Koh is Sterling Professor of International Law at Yale Law School. He returned to Yale Law School in January 2013 after serving for nearly four years as the 22nd Legal Advise of the U.S. Department of State.

Professor Koh is one of the country’s leading experts in public and private international law, national security law, and human rights. He first began teaching at Yale Law School in 1985 and served as its fifteenth Dean from 2004 until 2009. From 2009 to 2013, he took leave as the Martin R. Flug ’55 Professor of International Law to join the State Department as Legal Adviser, service for which he received the Secretary of State's Distinguished Service Award. From 1993 to 2009, he was the Gerard C. & Bernice Latrobe Smith Professor of International Law at Yale Law School, and from 1998 to 2001, he served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.

AAOSA-OSUM Seminar: All-Fiber-Integrated Super-Continuum Sources with High Power in the Visible and Infrared Wavelengths from 0.47 to 12 𝜇m (January 29, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/60438 60438-14886068@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, January 29, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Building
Organized By: The Optics Society at the University of Michigan (OSUM)

All-fiber integrated super-continuum (SC) sources are described based on a platform architecture that can operate in the visible, near-infrared, short-wave infrared, mid-wave infrared and long-wave infrared, with demonstrated SC wavelengths ranging from 0.47 to 12 microns. Modulation instability initiated SC generation leads to a simple SC source with no moving parts and that uses off-the-shelf components from the mature telecommunications and fiber optics industry. The resulting light sources are basically a cascade of fibers pumped by fiber-pigtailed laser diodes and some drive and control electronics; thus, the SC sources have the potential to be cost-effective, compact and reliable. Starting from fused silica fibers, the SC spectrum can be extended to shorter or longer wavelengths by cascading fibers with appropriate dispersion and/or transparency. As one example, we demonstrate a long-wave infrared SC source that generates a continuous spectrum from 1.57 to 12 microns using a fiber cascade comprising fused silica fiber followed by ZBLAN fluoride fiber followed by sulfide fiber and, finally, a high-numerical-aperture selenide fiber. The time-averaged output power is 417 mW at 33% duty cycle, and we observe a near-diffraction-limit, single spatial-mode beam across the entire spectral range. A prototype is described that is based on a three-layer architecture with a form factor of 16.7”x10”x5.7” and that plugs into a standard wall plug. This SC prototype has been used in a number of field tests as the active illuminator for stand-off FTIR system over distances of 5 to 25m, thus enabling identification of targets or samples based on their chemical signature.

"Dirty work," Invisibility and Dignity: An Intersectional Exploration of Janitors in India, US and South Korea (February 1, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/60157 60157-14840472@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 1, 2019 1:30pm

Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

My research explores “dirty work” and dignity, based on my comparative work of Janitors in the US, South Korea and India. Using an interdisciplinary framework, my talk will focus on how intersections of caste, gender, social class, age and ethnicity shape the invisibility of janitors in the workplace in culture-specific ways. Using qualitative interviews, social media analyses and ethnography, my research documents various dignity injuries experienced by janitors in these three cultural contexts. My talk will also present how Janitors also actively restore their dignity and infantilization of their labor in these three cultural contexts. I will discuss the relevance of intersectional framework to study dignity in workplace.

Auerbach’s Augustine: Existential Realism and the Low Style; the annual Werner Grilk Lecture (February 1, 2019 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/58790 58790-14559370@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 1, 2019 3:00pm
Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

This lecture situates Auerbach in the context of the Christian Existentialism of Marburg during his pre-Istanbul time there and then sets his readings of Augustine in conversation with the Augustines of Hannah Arendt and Hans Jonas, both of whom were influenced by Heidegger’s Augustine. In the process, it will extract Auerbach out of the critical impasse into which he has been wedged between a mandarin Eurocentric and a pre-post colonial exilic consciousness. The theo-philosophical conversations in which he was engaged in his early work had a robust afterlife in the magisterial Mimesis (1946), and help explain the huge popularity of that book when it was translated into English in 1953.

Jane O. Newman is Professor of Comparative Literature at University of California, Irvine. She is interested in dialogues between the pre- and early modern past and the modern and postmodern present. Her primary fields are Renaissance and Early Modern English, French, German, Italian and neo-Latin literature and culture.

Michigan in Washington Information Session (February 6, 2019 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/59244 59244-14719629@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 6, 2019 5:00pm
Location: Haven Hall
Organized By: Michigan in Washington Program

FUNDING is available for this living and learning program.

De-Centering the Global Middle Ages (February 8, 2019 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/52918 52918-13142328@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 8, 2019 9:00am
Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS)

De-centering the Global Middle Ages invites researchers to consider scholarly perspectives of the “global turn” of the premodern world, addressing connectivity and mobility of the globe c. 500-1600 CE. What work does the idea of “the medieval” do, and for whom? What do we gain and what do we lose by insisting on a shared notion of the medieval? By conceiving of a more diverse Middle Ages characterized by mobility and connectedness rather than isolation and limited travel? This symposium will explore what the “medieval” means for scholars of various geographic regions, including Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe in hopes of facilitating a dramatic shift in our visions of what it means to do medieval history, and the meaning of global history more broadly.

Please see the conference website for the program and registration details.

STS Speaker. Back to the Future: An STS Approach to Markets (February 11, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/58153 58153-14433289@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 11, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Science, Technology & Society

As the late Leigh Star noted, infrastructure is that often invisible stuff all around us that is both relational and ecological. I employ the tools of STS in an attempt to unpack infrastructure with respect to markets. Markets may be examined as (1) institutions, (2) the sum of particular sorts of economic transactions and (3) places where politics is enacted. Contemporary economists have focused on the sum of transactions, largely ignoring institutions and politics. However, given the performative character of economics, I need also to examine how economics, in its theoretical treatment of markets, has influenced the development of actual markets. Finally, any ecological study must also include standards, a relatively new form of infrastructure taken for granted by most economists. Based on preliminary investigations, I propose three hypotheses: First, actual markets (must) fail to deliver distributive justice. Second, economics as a discipline lags behind the actual changes in the nature of markets. Third, standards have taken on an increasingly important position as infrastructural devices that shape markets, first supporting and then undermining neoclassical approaches. Institutional economists of a century ago understood that a pragmatic approach, emphasizing the evolutionary character of markets, allowed construction of perspectives that change with the times. A re-reading of their work opens new vistas for STS approaches to markets.

Biosketch: Larry Busch is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology at MSU. Dr. Busch's current interests include the use of standards in public and private policy making, biotechnology and nanotechnology policy, agricultural science and technology policy, higher education in agriculture, and public participation in the policy process and the consequences of neoliberal policies for democratic governance. His most recent book is Knowledge for Sale: The Neoliberal Takeover of Higher Education. MIT Press, 2017.

Disclosure Dilemmas: Hidden Benefits of Revealing Not So Hidden Stigmas at Work (February 15, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/60661 60661-14937076@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 15, 2019 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

This talk will present findings from three sets of studies demonstrating the potential benefits of disclosing hidden stigmas at work. The first examines how vocal cues can differentiate heterosexual and non-heterosexual individuals, and how these distinctions can ultimately lead to job-related discrimination. The second study examines how disclosing a non-heterosexual identity can improve interpersonal outcomes when stigmas become known through indirect cues. The third study meta-analytically examines both the intrapersonal and interpersonal benefits of disclosing/expressing a stigmatized identity, as well as the boundary conditions of these effects. These studies are representative of my general program of research in that they identify subtle forms of workplace discrimination as well as potential strategies that stigmatized targets can engage in to remediate these barriers.

Messianic Minimalism: Anecdotes of the Coming World (Benjamin, Bloch, Blumenberg) (February 15, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/60669 60669-14937151@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 15, 2019 2:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

Hans Blumenberg's 1988 book The Saint Matthew Passion, while ostensibly concerned with the possible, secular reception of Bach’s masterpiece, pursues a series of 'theological lines of flight' via anecdotes, insights, and apercus generated by often heterodox theological debates and their literary receptions. One such line of flight is the retraction of the passion itself in Gersholm Scholem’s anecdote about the advent of the messiah in which almost nothing changes, as retold by Benjamin, Bloch, and now Blumenberg. Here Blumenberg returns to his earlier concerns with Gnosticism (Legitmacy, 1966) and considers a different answer to what has gone so wrong with creation that it needs to be destroyed.

Paul Fleming is Professor of Comparative Literature and German Studies as well as the Taylor Family Director of the Society for the Humanities. He has published monographs on Exemplarity and Mediocrity: The Art of the Average from Bourgeois Tragedy to Realism (2009) and The Pleasures of Abandonment: Jean Paul and the Life of Humor (2006) along with edited volumes on Hans Blumenberg, Siegfried Kracauer, the scholars around Stefan George, and Ulrich Peltzer. He is currently co-translating Blumenberg’s The Saint Matthew Passion for Cornell Press as well as completing a book-length project that examines the use of the anecdote in and as theory with respect to questions of exemplarity, evidence, history, and rhetoric.

Do you have experience in working alongside community partners in data analysis or program evaluation? Do you want to connect with others who are using their skills for public good? National efforts from organizations such as DataKind, Data Science for Social Good, and Statistics without Borders have been expanding in recent years as more individuals recognize their potential to impact social change. Great things can happen when individuals are empowered to dedicate time, resources, and knowledge to the pursuit of public good. Whether we work in the foreground or the background, we can all contribute to improving the lives of those around us.

Statistics in the Community (STATCOM), in collaboration with the Center for Education Design, Evaluation, and Research (CEDER) and the Community Technical Assistance Collaborative (CTAC), invite you to attend the 2nd Annual Data for Public Good Symposium hosted by the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS). The symposium showcase the many research efforts and community-based partnerships at U-M that focus on improving humanity by using data for public good. Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: The Center for the Study of Complex Systems

Emergent epidemics present major challenges to both global health and international politics. The 2014-2015 Ebola outbreak in West Africa alone took over ten thousand lives despite international aid nearing $5 billion from 70 countries. In retrospect, the declaration of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern came late, over 4 months after the first international transmission event. These apparent systemic failures likely reflect the fact that emergent epidemics are incredibly difficult to predict. The last decade saw Ebola emerge in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2018, 2017, 2014 and 2012, as well as Uganda in 2007, but these previous outbreaks never exceeded a few hundred cases, compared to nearly 30,000 cases in the West African epidemic.

A key problem is that the dynamics of emergent epidemics are shaped in large part by societal and behavioral factors, which are all highly variable. We will discuss these behavioral factors using stories from local communities, contact tracing, genomic data, and reports from the most extensive social mobilization effort to date. All of these distinct data sources influence how we use and interpret models from epidemiology, network theory and collective behavior. Slowly but surely, this synergy data sources and modeling approaches should pave the way for a new approach to epidemiology.

Gender Harassment in Science: Is it Just Me? (February 22, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/60849 60849-14972980@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 22, 2019 1:30pm

No, it isn’t just you. Sexual harassment is rampant across the sciences and other male-dominated disciplines. Gender harassment in particular, the “put downs” of sexual harassment, are rarely recognized as creating a negative workplace for women and gender minorities. Yet gender harassment is the most prevalent and frequent form of harassment, and thus has similar negative outcomes for women compared to the kinds of singly traumatic sexual events described more often in the media. In this talk, I will show how the history and culture of science creates white masculine ideals that permeate its modern practice, and how these ideals in turn influence the lived experience, productivity, and inclusion of women of color and white women. I will draw from recent publications as well as upcoming projects to demonstrate the ways in which people who are sexually harassed 1) question the validity of their experience, 2) question their scientific identity and worth, and 3) become targeted for intersecting forms of harassment depending on their other identities (e.g., gender identity, race, sexuality).

2019 NASPAA-Batten Student Simulation Competition: GLOBAL MIGRATION (February 23, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/60209 60209-14849112@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, February 23, 2019 8:00am
Location: Weill Hall (Ford School)
Organized By: Weiser Diplomacy Center

2019 NASPAA-Batten Student Simulation Competition takes place in 12 competition sites around the globe. This year, Ford School is one of them. 2019 simulation theme Global Migration is based on real-world data. This simulation tests participants' ability to balance their budgets and their humanity. Will you sacrifice one for the other?

Ford School, Weiser Diplomacy Center and International Policy Center look forward to hosting 60 graduate students from 12 schools in the north central region. Ford School's hosting team of students: Aprisal W Malale (Indonesia), Jessica Taketa (USA), Jonatan Vega-Martinez (USA), Yusuke Namiki (Japan) and Lingling Peng (China). Our judges for the simulation are associate professor John Ciorciari, ambassador Melvyn Levitsky and associate professor Ann Lin.

WHAT IS THE NASPAA-BATTEN STUDENT SIMULATION COMPETITION?

The NASPAA-Batten Student Simulation Competition is a day-long event that allows graduate students in public policy and related fields to test their skills on real-world data. This year, using a turn-based, participatory simulation developed for the competition by the Center for Leadership Simulation and Gaming, student teams will take on cabinet-level positions of a virtual country. Participants enter policy decisions in the simulation software to see how their policies affect their citizens, their economy, and the migrants themselves.

As part of the competition, teams will be expected to put together a policy memo and presentation. Evaluations of student performance will be based on two factors: 1) Their team’s simulation scores, and 2) Observations by subject matter experts serving as judges at each host site.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE COMPETITION DAY?

The competition is an all day event. Teams will travel to their host site, where they will undertake three rounds of the simulation: twice in the morning, plus once after lunch. Each round will last approximately one hour. After the three rounds, student teams will be given time to put together a policy memo and presentation. Experts in related fields will serve as judges. The experts will evaluate the policy memos and the presentations. Following the presentations, a short debriefing will explain the logic and data behind the simulation. Winners will be announced at the end of the day.

Each new genetic test or medical app generates or collects more and more detailed health data, but may also raise serious issues for medicine, public health. Under what circumstances should a test be used, and how should it be implemented? Should people be allowed to choose or refuse a test, or should it be mandatory, as newborn screening is in some states? How should the data from these tests be used, and should individuals control access to the results of their tests? If test results are released to third parties, such as employers or insurers, what protections should be in place to protect individuals from unfair treatment based on test results, data collected, or genotype?

This Dissonance series event will take a multi-disciplinary look at these issues from a variety of theoretical and applied perspectives.

Panelists will include:
- Lori Andrews, Professor of Law and Director of the Institute for Science, Law and, Technology at Chicago Kent Law School

- Jodyn Platt, Assistant Professor, U-M Medical School

- Kayte Spector-Bagdady, Assistant Professor, U-M Medical School, Chief of the Research Ethics Service in the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM)

“If you think our country is on the wrong course environmentally, then this talk and book are for you.”

Our society should be able to rally to face urgent challenges like global warming, but we are not. In his new book Sustainable Nation: Urban Design Patterns for the Future (Wiley 2018) Doug Farr argues persuasively that we have been going about it all wrong, proposes a reset, and a clear path forward. This inspirational and sobering talk will forever change your understanding of the challenges we face, the urgency with which we need to face them, and your leading role in our generation’s call to act.

The Living Earth Show: Tremble Staves Workshop Performance (March 14, 2019 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61418 61418-15099330@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 14, 2019 6:00pm
Location: Matthaei Botanical Gardens
Organized By: Center for World Performance Studies

In March 2019, composer and visual artist Raven Chacon and The Living Earth Show will travel to University of Michigan to workshop their new piece Tremble Staves: a wordless water opera synthesizing mixed media installation, manipulation of natural and artificial light and sound, and theatrical performance depicting the urgent but approaching crisis of water shortage burdening the region from California to the Navajo deserts. The full piece will be premiered in June 2019 in the flooded ruins of Sutro Baths, an early 20th century outdoor pool complex whose concrete remains are now a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This "workshop performance" in Ann Arbor, taking place in the lush setting of hte Matthaei Botanical Gardens Conservatory, will feature one movement of Tremble Staves and will feature members of the U-M Percussion Ensemble.

Chacon’s opera connects narratives of the San Francisco Bay Area’s relationship with water to overlapping Navajo creation stories in which water figures prominently. The work will be performed, from memory, by the virtuosic musicians of The Living Earth Show, utilizing amplified antlers, tape reels, effected guitars, and water as a dynamic percussion instrument. With this palette, Chacon combines electro-acoustic noises, traditional Navajo music, field recordings, and extended techniques rooted in the musical lineage of classical chamber music to craft a vital sonic and visual landscape.

The opera presents the sacred element of water as a struck, manipulated, and amplified instrument–in reverence while simultaneously creating a sonic violence representative of continuing scarcity of this natural resource. The audience joins the performers in the environment, turning a public space into a sonic ecosystem in which all participants are surrounded by the element discussed and interrogated by the music. The intention is immersion; the opera immerses a congregation of audience members anchored in a pond of resonance; communally engaging in the work yet aware of their own complicity in the draining of the water.

Each unique iteration of the piece will last approximately 15 minutes, starting at 6:00pm, 6:30pm and 7:30pm, with an Artist Q&A from 7:00-7:30pm. Attendees are invited to explore the conservatory during and between performances.

There will be limited seating available on a first come, first serve basis. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777, at least one week in advance of this event. Cartographies of Silence: A Conference for Readers and Writers
23rd Annual CLIFF Conference
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
March 15-16, 2019
Keynote Speaker: Professor Irena Klepfisz

It was an old theme even for me:Language cannot do everything– -- Adrienne Rich, “Cartographies of Silence”

Silence is not an absence, but is charged with meaning and action. To speak of silence means to speak of a multitude of paradoxes, as well as to enter an exciting avenue for literature, activism and interdisciplinary scholarship. Our conference interrogates what it means to plumb silences in the archive in search of unheard voices, and invites scholars to investigate the meanings of silence as a critical category. In particular, this conference is interested in mapping – across scholarly and creative disciplines – questions of translating silences in the archive, in the text, in the subject, and in activism. What are the possible ways of translating silence when events and experiences resist such translation? What challenges and possibilities does silence offer translators and scholars, who are tasked with making meaning of both the enunciated and the unsaid or untranslatable? How can we engage with knowledge that does not yield itself to current academic frameworks? In what ways can a focus on silence help to transform knowledge itself?

Professor Irena Klepfisz received her doctorate from the University of Chicago in Victorian literature, and later did post-doctoral work in Yiddish at YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. In addition to teaching in numerous universities around the country, Klepfisz taught for ten years in the college program at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, a women’s maximum security prison. Last year, she retired after 22 years of teaching Jewish Women's Studies at Barnard College. Klepfisz immigrated to the U.S. at age 8 and was raised among Yiddish-speaking, Jewish Labor Bundist (socialist) Holocaust survivors in the Bronx, where she attended public schools, a Yiddish shule, and mitlshul. She was an activist during the Second Wave, particularly in the lesbian/feminist movement, and addressed issues of anti-Semitism, Israeli/Palestinian peace, Jewish identity, and veltlekhe yidishkayt/secular Yiddish culture.

Klepfisz’s extensive publishing and performance record includes founding and co-editing Conditions magazine, serving as the Yiddish editor of the Jewish feminist Bridges, contributing to Nice Jewish Girls: A Lesbian Anthology, and co-editing The Tribe of Dina: A Jewish Women’s Anthology. She authored two performance pieces commissioned by the Jewish Museum (NY): Bread and Candy: Songs of the Holocaust and Zeyre eygene verter: In their own words (Yiddish women writers). She is the author of A Few Words in the Mother Tongue (poems) and Dreams of an Insomniac (essays), and most recently co-edited The Stars Bear Witness: The Jewish Labor Bund 1897-2017 and Koved zeyer ondenk: Honor to Their Memory (for the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising).

Parental Leaves and Gender Equality: The Effect of Parental Leaves on Women’s and Men’s Careers (March 15, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61538 61538-15126013@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 15, 2019 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

Parental leaves are critical for gender equality as they help employees manage both having careers and children, and recent trends in many countries including Canada entail encouraging longer parental leaves. Yet, past research shows that longer parental leaves can have unintended negative career impacts, especially for women, while the effects for men are less well understood. In this talk, I will present data examining the effect of parental leaves on both women’s and men’s careers. I will first present a set of studies examining effects of longer (one year and above) parental leaves on women’s careers. Given that past research shows that longer parental leaves may unintentionally harm women’s career progress, while they are also beneficial for the health of mothers and babies, here we sought to identify the mechanism underlying negative effects of longer (vs. shorter) maternity leaves: undermined perceptions of agency. That is, to enable mothers to do both, i.e., take longer maternity leaves and advance their careers, it was important to identify an underlying mechanism and consequently utilize this knowledge to test interventions that boost agency perceptions and mitigate negative effects of longer parental leaves. In a context of Canadian parental leave policies, we found that undermined perceptions of agency mediated the negative effects of a longer (i.e., one year) compared to a shorter (i.e., one month) maternity leave on job commitment (Study 1); providing information about a woman’s agency mitigates the unintended negative effects of a longer maternity leave (Study 2); and the usage of an organizational program that enables women to stay in touch with the workplace while on maternity leaves enhances agency perceptions and mitigates negative consequences (Study 3). Next, given that true gender equality involves men’s experiences as well, I will present findings from two studies on the effects of parental leaves on men’s career outcomes. Contrary to the negative effects of parental leaves on women’s careers, we theorized and found in a sample of undergraduate students (Study 4) and employees (Study 5) that the effects of parental leaves on men’s careers can be positive due to others’ enhanced perceptions of men’s “communality,” i.e., traits generally ascribed to women such as warmth, friendliness, and a sensitivity to the needs of others. Implications for theory, practice, and gender equality broadly are discussed.

Healthier Together: Collaborative Networks of Patients, Clinicians and Researchers Working Together to Transform Care (March 19, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/59181 59181-14694667@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2019 12:00pm
Location: Palmer Commons
Organized By: Department of Learning Health Sciences

Today’s health system fails to deliver the best possible outcomes. Research takes too long and costs too much, and opportunities to engage the participation and contribution by patients and families are not yet common. What if we could create a better care system by harnessing inherent motivation and collective intelligence of patients, clinicians and researchers? In every part of our lives, networks are having a profound effect. How could networked organizations accelerate progress towards Learning Health Systems? This talk will describe how several large-scale learning health system networks are eliminating the artificial barriers between clinical care, improvement and research while engaging all stakeholders as part of a single health system. The result is faster learning and better outcomes for large populations of patients.

The LHS Collaboratory is co-sponsored by the Department of Learning Health Sciences, the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation and the Office of Research at the University of Michigan.

This lecture will focus on Nayan Shah’s current research on the international history of mass prison hunger strikes, in particular the largely unknown struggles in Tule Lake Japanese American incarceration center in 1944 and the proliferation of hunger strikes in immigrant detention in California and Texas in 2010s. The lecture previews Shah's larger upcoming book project, Refusal to Eat, which investigates the tenacious practice of hunger strikes as it grew as a potent transnational idiom of 20th and 21st century political defiance. Following his earlier work, Stranger Intimacy, Shah examines these practices through the lenses of intimacy, affect and the material cultures of bodily defiance.

Bio:
Nayan Shah is Professor of History and American Studies & Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. His research examines historical struggles over bodies, space, and the exercise of state power from the mid-19th to the 21st century. Shah is the author of two award-winning books -- Stranger Intimacy: Contesting Race, Sexuality and the Law in the North American West (2011) and Contagious Divides: Epidemics and Race in San Francisco’s Chinatown (2001).

Shah's new project, Refusal to Eat, explores the transnational history of mass hunger strikes, and political struggle and medical ethical crises through 20th century and contemporary case studies drawn from U.S. and British suffrage activists, Irish Republicans, Bengali Revolutionaries, Japanese American Internees, South African anti-apartheid activists, Guantanamo prisoners, and refugees in Australia, the United States, and Europe.

Graduate Student lunch also available in afternoon. Please contact Mika Kennedy <mikake@umich.edu> for details.
