On Black Technoculture (January 23, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71326 71326-17817094@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 23, 2020 12:00pm
Location: North Quad
Organized By: Digital Studies Institute

Where does Blackness manifest In the ideology of Western technoculture? Technoculture is the American mythos (Dinerstein 2006) and ideology; a belief system powering the coercive, political, and carceral relations between culture and technology. Once enslaved, historically disenfranchised, never deemed literate, Blackness is understood as the object of Western technical and civilizational practices. This presentation is a critical intervention for internet research and science and technology studies (STS), reorienting Western technoculture’s practices of “race-as-technology” (Chun 2009) to visualize Blackness as technological subjects rather than as “things”. Hence, Black technoculture. Utilizing critical technocultural discourse analysis (Brock 2018), Afro-optimism, and libidinal economic theory, this presentation employs Black Twitter as an exemplar of Black cyberculture: digital practice and artifacts informed by a Black aesthetic.

André Brock is an associate professor of media studies at Georgia Tech. His scholarship examines racial representations in videogames, black women and weblogs, whiteness, blackness, and digital technoculture, as well as innovative and groundbreaking research on Black Twitter. His forthcoming book titled Distributed Blackness: African American Cybercultures will be published with NYU Press in February 2020, offering an innovative approach to understanding Black everyday lives mediated by digital technologies.

Free and open to the public, no RSVP required.

FOR REMOTE PARTICIPANTS: Video from this talk will be streamed live. For video, during the event visit this URL: http://umsi.info/black

Hosted by ESC: The Center for Ethics, Society, and Computing.
This event is co-sponsored by the Digital Studies Institute.

Organized By: Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science

Professor Alexandra Rosati will be giving a talk on "Evolving the Human Mind: What Our Primate Cousins Reveal about Human Cognition."

Why do humans exhibit flexible, intelligent behavior? Comparative studies of primates, our closest relatives, can help us understand the evolutionary origins of complex human cognition. I will present research examining how other primates like chimpanzees think about the world to address three main questions: how do other animals solve ecological problems like finding food, how do they solve social problems like finding friends, and how do their abilities change and develop over their lifetime? By integrating cognitive science with evolutionary theory, we can understand humans in the context of the natural world.

Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Humanities Collaboratory

We offer an overview of our collaborative project entitled “From Africa to Patagonia: Voices of displacement” (http://umich.edu/~aacollab/). Since 2017, we have been funded through the Humanities Collaboratory, a cutting-edge research initiative established at the University of Michigan. Our interdisciplinary team includes eight faculty, eight graduate students, and 32 undergraduate students. Our mission is to analyze how language is entangled with cultural identity through the Patagonian Boers, a community that traces its roots to the South-African Boers who settled in Argentina after the Anglo-Boer War of 1902. We have disseminated our findings through six research articles, five public essays, and a digital archive. Our public essays, published in outlets such as Babel, The Conversation, Clarín (Argentina), Times Higher Education, and Inside Higher Ed epitomize our goal of engagement beyond the academic sphere. In this talk, we will explain how our collaboration emerged, how we refined our collaborative process, and how we fostered undergraduate involvement in our research. Altogether, we demonstrate that altering the traditional educational structure while encouraging agency and creativity yields new forms of learning for all involved.

Please join us for this talk by Ana Silva Campo, with Nick Henriksen, Lorenzo García-Amaya, Ryan Szpiech, and Matthew Neubacher.

Location: Hutchins Hall
Organized By: Asian Pacific American Law Students Association

January 30th is the Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. On February 19th, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, one of the most blatant forms of racial profiling in US history, which led to the forced removal and incarceration of over 120,000 American citizens and residents on the basis of being ethnically Japanese. Fred T. Korematsu was one of many who refused to be incarcerated, and was arrested. A national civil rights hero, Fred Korematsu appealed his case to the Supreme Court. Although the Supreme Court ruled against him in 1944, in 1983 his conviction was overturned in a coram nobis proceeding where Fred Korematsu addressed the court, saying, “I would like to see the government admit they were wrong, and do something about it so this will never happen again to any American citizen of any race, creed, or color.”

In 2014 and again in 2019, the US government attempted to reopen the Fort Sill camp to incarcerate migrant children from Latin America; Fort Sill was previously used as a concentration camp where Native Americans and Japanese Americans were detained. In June 2017, ICE agents raided and arrested Iraqi families in the Detroit area, leading to the ACLU’s lawsuit, Hamama v. Adducci. Raids on Iraqi families have continued into 2019.

On January 30th, APALSA's Political Action Committee, in partnership with the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission and Stop Repeating History would like to invite you to attend a screening of the documentary Alternative Facts: The Lies of Executive Order 9066 by Jon Osaki, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A led by University of Michigan Law student Kevin Luong.

This event features incredible guest speakers: Dr. Karen Korematsu, Don Tamaki, Aamina Ahmed, Mary Kamidoi, and Michael Steinberg. Free and open to the public. Food from Curry On will be provided with RSVP: bit.ly/2tfDsnu

The weekly Entrepreneurship Hour speaker series is back every Friday during the academic year, free and open to the public to attend.

Sam Schillace, now a VP of engineering at Google, was previously the SVP of engineering at Box, where he was responsible for the engineering and QA teams. He is one of the founders of Writely, which he sold to Google in 2006 to become one of the first pieces of Google Docs. For the next four years, Sam was an engineering director, initially overseeing Google Docs and building out the team, but eventually working on Sites, Reader, Blogger, Picasa, Google Groups, Gmail, Page Creator, and other internal projects.

Before Google, Sam was a serial entrepreneur in Silicon Valley for 20 years, working on projects as diverse as video games, early Web page creation software, word processors, and application engines (server-side JavaScript before it was cool!). Sam has experience with product design, technical design, hands-on coding, and engineering management, and likes to do all of them at once, typically.

Sparked by The Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019《2019年逃犯及刑事事宜相互法律協助法例(修訂)條例草案》, also known as the Extradition Bill, a wave of ongoing protests have begun in Hong Kong since June 2019. The Extradition Bill incident led to a wide-reaching social movement. It is important to note, however, that physical protests and demonstrations were not the only ways through which Hong Kong people expressed their opinions. Promotional art pieces, music, videos, and memes also played significant roles in the movement. In this exhibition, we will present these incredible art pieces, exploring their aesthetics and functions.

The Role of Creative Media in Hong Kong Protests (February 7, 2020 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/72533 72533-18015943@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 7, 2020 8:00am
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: Hong Kong Human Rights Concern Group

Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Comparative Literature

This talk draws on work in the environmental humanities to rewrite the Anthropocene as autotheory. Written in a poetic-philosophical mode, “Respite” brings together 12 fragments as autotheoretical forms—autocollage, autothermograph, nested equation, and 9 others—for a self confronted with the unthinkable extinction of all life on earth. Grounded in human and natural archives, “Respite” is framed by Sylvia Wynter’s and Michel Foucault’s theoretical critiques of anthropos (Man). In casting self-writing as an experiment, “Respite” offers a new ethical model for being present to life in its ending.

Lynne Huffer is Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Emory University. She is the author of *Foucault’s Strange Eros* (forthcoming 2020); *Are the Lips a Grave?: A Queer Feminist on the Ethics of Sex* (2013); *Mad for Foucault: Rethinking the Foundations of Queer Theory* (2010); *Maternal Pasts, Feminist Futures: Nostalgia, Ethics, and the Question of Difference* (1998); and *Another Colette: The Question of Gendered Writing* (1992). She has published academic articles on feminist theory, queer theory, Foucault, ethics, and the Anthropocene, as well as personal essays, creative nonfiction, and opinion pieces in mass media venues. With Chicago artist Jennifer Yorke she also created Wading Pool, a collaborative artists book http://www.vampandtramp.com/finepress/h/Lynne-Huffer-Jennifer-Yorke.html.

Gómez-Barris lecture center the work of artists, scholars, and new social and ecological formations that reside in that productive tension of critical undoing and living and making otherwise. In particular, it draws from her in-progress book At the Sea’s Edge that considers the oceanic not only as an archive of coloniality, and a receptacle and spectacle of planetary ruins, but as a dynamic life force and historical shaper in relation to the forces of racial and extractive capitalism. Thinking with submerged perspectives primarily in the trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic, Gómez-Barris expands upon Kamau Brathwaite’s concept of tidealectics as key to understanding how to move within and beyond the colonial anthropocene.

The Role of Creative Media in Hong Kong Protests (February 18, 2020 7:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/72963 72963-18107870@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 18, 2020 7:00am
Location: Pierpont Commons
Organized By: Hong Kong Human Rights Concern Group

Creative media became a form of passive protest and connected people who shared the same emotions during social unrest in Hong Kong. In this exhibition, we will explore the incredible artworks created in this democratic movement.

Since June, protests have been ongoing in Hong King, sparked by The Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019. In one of the demonstrations, over two million Hongkongers, which is more than a quarter of the population, went on the streets to express their objection to the bill, and later led to a large scale democratic movement. It is important to note, however, that physical protests and demonstrations were not the only methods Hong Kong people used to voice their opinions. Creation of promotional art pieces, music, videos, and memes were sparked by the protests and played a significant role in the democratic movement.

After 2/12, this exhibit will be available for viewing from 2/18 through 2/27 in the Pierpont Commons Piano Lounge.

The Role of Creative Media in Hong Kong Protests (February 21, 2020 7:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/72963 72963-18107873@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 21, 2020 7:00am

The Massey TBI Grand Challenge supports high-impact proposals by funding milestone-driven research over a 12-month timeframe.

This event is made possible thanks to a generous gift from the Joyce and Don Massey Family Foundation. Up to $650,000 is available in 2020 to fund the development of diagnostic, device, therapeutic, or health IT solutions that address the initial ‘golden hours’ of care after severe traumatic brain injury (generally the first 48 hours). Additionally, this year ALL current/past awardees and new awardees will be eligible for the Schwabauer Accelerator Award of $40,000. This will be a separate application.

Note: To be considered for funding, you must attend the Grand Challenge event.

Paper Workshop: "Dressing up as a Queen to save the Crown: the Duchesse de Berry's Quadrille de Marie Stuart" (March 9, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73381 73381-18210536@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 9, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Angell Hall
Organized By: Nineteenth Century Forum

Please join the Nineteenth Century Forum (NCF) for a paper workshop with Isabelle Marie Anne Gillet.

At the French Royal Court in 1829, the Duchesse de Berry hosted a themed costume ball, centered on Mary Stuart, and subsequently commissioned Eugène Lami to illustrate the event. Lami’s album, a lavish, hand-colored, extremely limited edition compilation of lithographs, known as the Quadrille de Marie Stuart, raises complex questions about the rhetorical powers of representation in mobilizing collective memory to affect individuals’ understanding of the present. This article argues that the album constructs how the ball should be remembered and that its production served to unify the memory of the event, for the guests, its exclusive recipients, as a visual aide-mémoire of their elaborate costumes and the tableaux-vivants they enacted.

What has eluded scholars is the level to which Berry, a known political schemer, oversaw the spectacle, the audience’s experience, and the production of its illustrated pendant. Following in the footsteps of recent historical scholarship on female figures and their contribution to crafting their public image, I consider how the lithographic album, as a tangible extension of Berry’s image, displays the dexterity with which she manipulated visual and cultural materials to serve her own political agenda. Previously undiscussed letters from the artist reveal Berry’s involvement as well as the rising urgency of the political moment. Masked balls at the court were common in Restoration France; yet the care and attention to the production of the album commemorating this one point to a larger motive, namely the Duchesse’s political aspirations for herself and her son, on the eve of the Revolution of 1830.

Sustainability (environmental, social & governance values) is not 'a thing' but 'the way we do things'. It is about mainstreaming sustainability. To communicate this we will be talking about integration of sustainability metrics and values at three levels of implementation:
1. Within the fence of an organization: How are sustainable principles implemented at the unit level?
2. Outside the fence of the organization: How are sustainability principles implemented across supply chains?
3. Conditioning capital investment in sustainability: What is sustainable capital, how is capital deployment impacted by sustainability metrics?

How do you think about the experiences of freedom among black people in Brazil before the end of slavery in 1888? Interested in this question, this lecture presents a reflection on the experiences of free and literate black men, who were active in the press, as well as in the political-cultural landscape of the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in the second half of the nineteenth century. Ferreira de Menezes, Luiz Gama, Machado de Assis, José do Patrocinio, Ignacio de Araújo Lima, Arthur Carlos and Theophilo Dias de Castro are the central subjects in this narrative, along with so many other “free men of color” who sought in different ways to conquer and maintain their spaces in the public debate about the Brazil’s paths, while relying on the sustainability of their own individual projects. Against the grain of “ race hatred” daily practices, they not only contributed to debates on daily, abolitionist, black and literary newspapers, but also led the creation of resistance, confrontation and dialogue tools and mechanisms.

Ana Flávia Magalhães Pinto is an adjunct professor in the Department of History at the University of Brasília. She received her PhD in History from the State University of Campinas, her MA in History from the University of Brasília, and her BA in Journalism from The University Center of Brasília. Pinto has developed research articulating knowledge in the areas of History, Communication, Literature and Education, with an emphasis on political-cultural performance of black thinkers, black press, abolitionism and experiences of black freedom and citizenship in the slavery period and post-abolition in Brazil and elsewhere in the African Diaspora.

This lecture will take place on Monday, March 9, at 4:00pm in 1014 Tisch Hall.

The One Water concept is the integrated planning and management of finite water resources to meet the long term needs of both society and our ecosystems. As a society we need to not only improve the management of our water resources, we should also explore how valuable resources can be recovered from our water. This teach-in will explore the connections between our drinking water, wastewater, and natural water systems in order to better manage our water resources and recover valuable products. In recent years researchers have focused on recovering valuable products such as fertilizers from our waste streams in order to develop more sustainable products and conserve finite resources. We will explore this topic and many more in this teach-in. Specifically, this program will dive in to interesting topics such as:
--Current resource recovery opportunities such as nutrient recycling
--New and emerging resource recovery and water reuse technologies
--Tangible steps that you can take within your household to improve your impact on the water cycle

You can expect to learn about the engineered water cycle, how you can reduce your food/water waste, nutrient recycling, and new technologies and approaches to recover valuable resources from our water and wastewater!

The two greatest human impacts on the Earth are the transformation of natural habitat into industrial landscape and climate change. Our ability to predict how communities of organisms will respond to such disturbances depends on being able to understand how biotic and abiotic interactions influence the survival of individual animals. This talk presents new tools and approaches to quantitatively characterize behavioral variation in biomechanical performance in the real world. This information informs the design of bio-inspired robotic models that emulate current, extinct, and theoretical forms and are used in robot-animal interaction experiments to probe the fundamental biomechanical principles shaping the evolution of animal movement over millions of years. By examining the biomechanics of motions in complex environments, we are better able to predict animal response to ecosystem disturbance. In addition, we are able to design robots capable of successful operation in real-world environments.

Talia Y. Moore is an Assistant Research Scientist in the Robotics Institute at the University of Michigan. She develops tools to enable the quantitative characterization of behavioral variation in animal movement in real-world environments and applies her findings to the design of bio-inspired robots that are used to test evolutionary hypotheses. Dr. Moore is an Associate Editor for International Conference for Biomedical Robotics and Biomechatronics and is a member of IEEE, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, and the Society for the Study of Evolution. She received a PhD in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University in 2016.

Epidemiology and dynamics of the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic (March 10, 2020 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73197 73197-18157926@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 10, 2020 11:30am

The novel coronavirus COVID-19 epidemic is currently leveling off in China but on the upswing in the rest of the world. Understanding and modeling this growth is obviously of high importance. We noticed that for several weeks, the number of deaths in China could be fit by a power law with exponent of about 2.25, suggesting a kind of fractal or small-world behavior going on. Traditional epidemiological models, such as the Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered models (SEIR) puts groups in compartments and use differential equations to predict the behavior, but there is no spatial or network properties taken into account. At early times, the growth is exponential depending upon the reproduction rate, and for later times those models predict an s-shaped curve. The power-law result predicted a greater growth of the epidemic than many people were predicting. More recently, the daily deaths in China have dropped off exponentially, in fact following a model of A. Vazquez from 2006. At the same time, the growth in the number of total deaths in other parts of the world is tracking the behavior in China, delayed by one month. The small-world, fractal idea suggested that this world-wide transmission was likely to take place, and the belief that it could be contained in China was clearly short-sighted.

Our climate is our planet’s life support system. Climate change influences human health and disease in numerous ways, including impacts from increased extreme weather events, wildfire, decreased air quality, and illnesses transmitted by food, water, and disease carriers such as mosquitoes and ticks. As described in the Lancet Countdown report, some existing health threats will intensify and new health threats will emerge. Not everyone is equally at risk, and children are especially at risk. Preventive and adaptive actions are needed.

The keynote speaker is an emergency medicine physician who co-authored the U.S. portion of the Lancet Countdown report and Health and Care Delivery in the New England Journal of Medicine. A panel of experts will present solutions from a variety of other universities who are reducing their carbon footprint in response to the urgent public health need.

Welcome: Joseph C. Kolars, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Education and Global Initiatives, UM Medical School

Keynote: "Climate Action: Children’s Health Drives Need for Urgent Action" Renee N. Salas, MD, MPH, MS, Clinical Instructor of Emergency Medicine, Harvard Medical School and emergency medicine physician, Massachusetts General Hospital

Folkloric dance and music festivals draw in diverse audiences, entertaining participants and instilling a sense of pride in Canadian multiculturalism as a national trait. Folklorama lays claim to being the longest running and largest multicultural festival of its kind in the world, and it is one that relies heavily on community groups more than well known performers. What can an examination of the festival tell us about Canadian national self-narratives? And is it possible to negotiate the complexities of difference and identity politics by engaging in music and dance?

The Center for World Performance Studies Faculty Lecture Series features our Faculty Fellows and visiting scholars and practitioners in the fields of ethnography and performance. Designed to create an informal and intimate setting for intellectual exchange among students, scholars, and the community, faculty are invited to present their work in an interactive and performative fashion.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Combating climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing today’s society, and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering has recognized the need to mitigate emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) as one of this century’s grand engineering challenges. Such action is needed to prevent potentially catastrophic shifts in regional temperatures, precipitation patterns, and sea level rise. This teach-in will introduce several emerging opportunities to (1) sequester human-derived CO2 emissions and (2) directly utilize CO2 to create value-added products. Topics will include geologic sequestration of CO2, use of CO2 to produce geothermal energy and store surplus renewable energy in subsurface reservoirs, and direct utilization of CO2 in durable concrete infrastructure products. The presentation will include several hands-on activities to explore these processes and discuss how we can leverage such engineering solutions to slow climate change.
