MIDAS Seminar Series Presents: Simine Vazire, Psychology, University of Melbourne (March 1, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81079 81079-20846537@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 1, 2021 4:00pm

How can we tell which scientific findings are credible? Peer-reviewed journals, even prestigious ones, do not provide much assurance regarding the credibility of any individual report. Ideally, we would read each report carefully when deciding what to trust, but this is often impossible (e.g., when we lack the expertise to evaluate the methods) or impractical (e.g., when we need to evaluate research at scale). Moreover, rather than each of us making private judgments, we would all benefit from collecting and sharing evaluations from a range of experts with different areas of expertise and different blind spots and biases. The ideal would be to validate a rubric for eliciting structured quantitative ratings of quality along a wide range of dimensions, and collect and make publicly available ratings from many different and diverse experts. These scores could be combined into a variety of metrics, or “Quality Factors” (QFs), that vary in the weight placed on different qualities. These QFs would provide easily digestible and flexible quality ratings of individual scientific papers that could be useful to other scientists, to journalists and policymakers, and to the public. QFs would also help incentivize authors to “get it right” rather than just get published in prestigious journals, because rewards and recognition could be tied to these more transparent, accountable, and valid metrics rather than to journal prestige. In this talk, I discuss what this could look like for my home discipline of psychology, and describe some progress towards producing Quality Factors for psychology papers.

Simine Vazire is an associate professor in the department of psychology at the University of Melbourne. She is the director of the Personality and Self-Knowledge laboratory. She is the co-founder and current president of the Society for the Improvement of Psychological Science, a senior editor at Collabra: Psychology, and editor in chief of Social Psychological and Personality Science. Her research is funded by the National Science Foundation, and examines accuracy and bias in people’s perceptions of their own behavior and personality. She also conducts meta-science examining how people interpret scientific findings, and tracking trends in the methods and results of published studies in psychology over time. She teaches and blogs about research methods and reproducibility.

The Residential College 2020-2021 Robertson Memorial Lecture

Award-Winning Writer, Theodore Roethke Distinguished University Professor and RC Alumna, Laura Kasischke

"The News from Poetry: In an Era of False Facts and True Fallacies, What's to be Found in Art?”

March 3, 2021 via Zoom
4 - 5:30pm, with an online reception to follow
Register at https://myumi.ch/yKA8b

This talk will explore the ways in which art crosses borders and boundaries, both personal and global, erases political divisions to unite generations and cultures, to speak to all genders and races, to erase religious and economic divisions, while traveling eternally and generously (and for free!) from continent to continent, century to century, enduring through crises and chaos, disease and despair, to bring us the truths without which we will die.

Laura Kasischke is a graduate of the Residential College and is now proud to be an instructor of creative writing in it as well as in the English Department, where she is the Theodore Roethke Distinguished University Professor. She has published eleven collections of poetry, nine novels, a novella, and a collection of short stories. Her work has been translated into over a dozen languages, and three of her novels have been made into feature length films. The recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rilke Award for Poetry, and numerous teaching awards, Kasischke’s twelfth collection of poetry, Lightning Falls in Love, will be published in September.

Presented by the Residential College, celebrating 50 years of the Creative Writing & Literature Program

The Robertson Memorial Lecture is an annual Residential College event made possible by a gift honoring Professor James H. Robertson and Jean B. Robertson, the first Dean of the Residential College and his wife.

This event is free and open to the public.

International Institute Conference on Arts of Devotion (March 4, 2021 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/81757 81757-20951378@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 4, 2021 9:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: International Institute

Free and open to the public; register at http://myumi.ch/wleGk

The phrase “Arts of Devotion” typically brings to mind traditional ritual objects used as part of religious practices, or evokes items like costumes, masks, dances, songs, poetry, and literature. Arts of Devotion can tend to be conflated with only those items that are understood as “traditional,” rather than those that emerge from the contemporary moment, as if modern and contemporary art can only be associated with the purely secular world.

Yet there are numerous contemporary artists who have incorporated elements of the devotional into their works, and devotional arts have changed with the advent of modern technologies and changing socio-political contexts. We might also consider Arts of Devotion as potentially extending beyond the usual association with the religious to other “devotional” relationships, such as those for political or revolutionary leaders, or individuals’ loved ones.

This year’s conference explores both contemporary and traditional Arts of Devotion by bringing together scholars from across disciplines and temporal and regional contexts, to engage with one another and a broader audience of faculty, students, and the general public.

Free and open to the public.
This conference is funded in part by five (5) Title VI National Resource Center grants from the U.S. Department of Education

A Taste of Frontier Medicine: The Kumys Cure in Sergei Aksakov’s Eastern Frontier Trilogy (March 4, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81936 81936-20990916@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 4, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Slavic Languages & Literatures

"A Taste of Frontier Medicine” considers Sergei Aksakov’s extensive, mid-nineteenth-century memoirs through the lens of a “frontier family narrative,” a genre perhaps more familiar in the American literary setting. While Aksakov’s work has received critical attention for its memoiristic content and attention to nature, the geohistorical specificity of the trilogy’s setting has been overlooked. This is surprising given the recent interest in understanding Russian colonial and imperial experience. A Family Chronicle (1856) and Childhood Years (1856) are not books in which the action could take place anywhere or in some generic pastoral or provincial space. Rather, they are about a specific place – Orenburgskii krai (Bashkiria) – that was a borderland, frontier, and contact zone from the time of its inclusion within Russian imperial space in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries into Aksakov’s lifetime. In “A Taste of Frontier Medicine,” I explore some of the ways in which the eastern Russian border with “Asia” broadly understood frames Aksakov’s work, as well as how these texts make claims about Russian identity as something defined by and in the “hybrid,” Eurasian sphere of the border zone. Discussion will center on two episodes that articulate a critical aspect of Aksakov’s frontier imaginary: the narrator’s mother’s taking of a “kumys cure.” The “kumys cure” serves as a revitalizing moment that establishes “nomadic,” “Asiatic” elements of the frontier as a crucial antidote to both a perceived excess of civilization and, counter-intuitively, to the potential dangers of the frontier zone itself.

The Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida was supposed to be a place where troubled kids could go to straighten out their lives. What these boys found there would instead leave lasting scars and dozens of unexplained deaths.Deadly Secrets follows the work of forensic anthropologist Dr. Erin Kimmerle from the University of South Florida, who has made it her personal mission to uncover the truth behind these mysterious deaths and disappearances. With unprecedented access to family members, photography and old records, Dr. Kimmerle and reporter Ben Montgomery expose the truth behind Dozier's missing boys, providing closure to families that have been haunted by this nightmare for decades.

DISCUSSANTS
Susan Waltz (Ford School of Public Policy) & Sioban Harlow (School of public health); moderated by Leigh Pearce (School of Public Health).

Translation and Memory: Hispanofilipino Literature and the Archive in the US Midwest (March 12, 2021 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/77488 77488-21034701@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 12, 2021 9:00am

Seminar coordinator: Marlon James Sales (U-M Postdoctoral Fellow in Critical Translation Studies)

Although Filipino migration has historically converged in other places across the US, it is in the Midwest, particularly at the University of Michigan, where some of the most extensive archival sources on this Southeast Asian nation can be found. These sources are generally used to examine US imperialism in Asia-Pacific, often glossing over the fact that the American period in the Philippines also led to the flourishing of Filipino literature in Spanish as a nationalist response. In this second installment of our Mellon-funded Sawyer Seminars, we shall analyze the archive as a site of translation and historical memory as a multilingual construct, focusing specifically on Hispanofilipino texts in the libraries of the University of Michigan and the broader Midwest. Translation here means two things. Since Spanish has never been spoken widely in the Philippines despite three centuries of colonial rule, translation may refer to the rendering of texts in another language supposedly understood by a majority of local readers. But given the limitations in how archival data is stored in the Philippines, translation may also refer to the movement of the archival sources themselves, whether physically or digitally, thus reclaiming them as objects of cultural memory. How has translation contributed to a monolingualized commemoration of multilingual pasts? What are the stakes of reconstructing a nation’s history through texts written in colonial languages? In which ways can translation help in recuperating a peripheral literary tradition in Spanish?

In the 117th Congress, Gary is the Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which oversees the Department of Homeland Security and is the Senate’s top oversight committee. She is known for her ability to build coalitions to get things done for Michigan and our nation. As Chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, and Budget Committee, and a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, she has a powerful and unique role to play in shaping our nation’s health care, manufacturing, infrastructure, environment, and agriculture policies. Senator Stabenow is laser-focused on standing up for Michigan families, expanding affordable health care and lowering the costs of prescription drugs, helping Michigan businesses create good jobs here at home, and protecting our Great Lakes and outdoor heritage. The field of Digital Humanities, and particularly the increasing accessibility of digital resources, has opened a significant number of opportunities for the study of sources that can be highly relevant to history and archaeology. These opportunities include the use of methodologies from the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Computational Linguistics and the application of a diversity of techniques and methods for the large-scale analysis and exploration of collections of historical documents.

In the case of the early colonial history of Mexico, there is an enormous variety of historical documents related to the economic, social and political life at that time. An example of this is the sixteenth-century Relaciones Geográficas de Nueva España (the Geographic Reports of New Spain). Created from the responses to a questionnaire ordered by Philip II’s and obtained between 1577 and 1585, the Geographic Reports sought to compile all the information available on the American territories under Spanish rule. Due to its essential content, these reports have been the object of study by a large number of researchers, and are frequently used in the analysis of the political, social, territorial and economic situation at the time. Although numerous studies seek to understand the shifting territorial situation in New Spain, two enormous challenges have remained. The first one is the considerable size or volume of information to be analysed and compared. The second has been the precise identification of the places mentioned in these reports, especially on a large scale.

In this presentation, I will introduce the project sponsored by the Transatlantic Platform for the Humanities and Social Sciences (T-AP) called “Digging into Early Colonial Mexico: a large-scale computational analysis of historical documents”, and some of its results. Taking as a basis the historical corpus of the Geographic Reports of New Spain, the project main objectives have been: 1) to adapt and develop techniques from Artificial Intelligence, including aspects of Natural Language Processing, Text Mining and Geographic Information Systems for the extraction and analysis of historical information from this source, and 2) to design computational methodologies for the identification of possible large-scale historical patterns. This research is allowing us to clarify some of the essential geographic questions related to the period and the colonial situation in this territory. I will also present a methodology termed Geographical Text Analysis and some of the most critical outputs from this project. These include software developed to carry out this type of analysis, the first sixteenth-century digital gazetteer of Mexico and Guatemala, and the first experiments using Natural Language Processing to automatically annotate the Relaciones corpus.

The University of Michigan M-LEEaD Center is co-sponsoring an event to mark the 5-year anniversary of the bipartisan legislation called the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. This reform law was designed to modernize U.S. industrial chemical policy to promote health, but has it lived up to its promise?

Public understanding is limited regarding how exposures to toxic chemicals affect health and how they might be regulated. Unlike pharmaceuticals, industrial and commercial chemicals are rarely tested for safety before they reach the U.S. market. The 1976 TSCA has been widely acknowledged to be a weak and ineffective law, and widespread exposures and harms continue. In the U.S., everyone is exposed to industrial and toxic chemicals, dozens and probably hundreds – well before birth. The amount of chemicals manufactured and imported continues to grow – it is trillions of pounds – and these chemicals remain largely unregulated. At the same time, we have seen an increase in chronic diseases, such as diabetes, autism, and infertility. Not everyone is equally at risk, and a higher burden of disease falls on low wealth communities and communities of color. These health disparities in exposures and health effects are illustrated and exacerbated by COVID.

The amended TSCA gave the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency new requirements and authorities. The public health impact points to the need for the U.S. EPA to fully use its new powers to evaluate all risks from hazardous chemicals and set policies which protect health and are accountable to high-risk communities. Preventive actions are urgently needed.

Who was the historical John the Baptist? The New Testament authors portrayed him as the forerunner of Jesus of Nazareth and claimed that he played a significant part in shaping the early Jesus Movement and Christian Origins. The 2021 Freedman Lecture hosted specialists of the New Testament to reflect on the person and tradition of John the Baptist: Joel Marcus, Joan Taylor, Albert Baumgarten, Edmondo Lupieri, Rivka Nir, and Gabriele Boccaccini. Each panelist responded to the question, ‘Who is my John the Baptist?’

Join us on Zoom from 3-5pm on March 22 for a showing of the Freedman Lecture Panel followed by lively discussion with four additional New Testament specialists who will reflect on the presentations and the recent Enoch Nangeroni Meeting dedicated to John the Baptist (http://enochseminar.org/online-2021).

The live discussion is chaired by Gabriele Boccaccini (University of Michigan-Ann Arbor).

Discussants include James McGrath (Butler University), Clare K. Rothschild (Lewis University/Stellenbosch University), Shayna Sheinfeld (Sheffield Institute for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies), and Joshua Scott (University of Michigan-Ann Arbor).

Advances in machine learning have led to quite fluent natural language generation technologies. Most of our current optimizations and evaluations focus on accuracy in output. Faithful generation is considered a nice to have, a luxury. In this talk I make the argument that faithful generation is crucial to our generation technologies especially given the scale and impact NLP technologies have on people’s lives.

Mona Diab is a Full Professor of Computer Science at the George Washington University where she directs the Care4Lang NLP lab. She is also Research Scientist with Facebook AI. She conducts research in Statistical Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a rapidly growing, exciting field of research in artificial intelligence and computer science. Interdisciplinarity is inherent to NLP, drawing on the fields of computer algorithms, software engineering, statistics, machine learning, linguistics, pragmatics, information technology, etc. In NLP, researchers model language and its use, and build both analytical models and predictive ones. In Professor Diab’s NLP lab, they address problems in social media processing, building robust enabling technologies such as syntactic and semantic processing tools for written texts in different languages, information extraction tools for large data, multilingual processing, machine translation, and computational sociolinguistic processing. Professor Diab has a special interest in Arabic NLP, where the emphasis has been on investigating Arabic dialect processing where there are very few available automated resources.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Department of Learning Health Sciences

Speakers Stefan Boes, PhD and Sarah Mantwill, PhD from the university of Lucerne will discuss the Swiss Learning Health System.

Promoting and supporting uptake of evidence and evidence-informed decision-making in health-systems related policy and practice is a challenge. In Switzerland, the need to address this matter has been increasingly emphasized by different actors in the health system. In particular, the lack of comprehensive coordination efforts in the field of health services research, and subsequent knowledge translation activities, has been stressed. In response, the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS) was established as a nationwide project in 2017, currently involving 10 academic partner institutions. One of the overarching objectives of the SLHS is to bridge research, policy, and practice by providing an infrastructure that supports learning cycles by: continuously identifying issues relevant to the Swiss health system, systemizing relevant evidence, presenting potential courses of action, and revising and reshaping responses. Key features of learning cycles in the SLHS include the development of policy/evidence briefs that serve as a basis for stakeholder dialogues with actors from research, policy and practice. Issues that are identified to be further pursued are monitored for potential implementation and eventually evaluated to inform new learning cycles and to support continuous learning within the system.

Dr. Boes and Dr. Mantwill will provide an overview of the SLHS and its key features, as well as its capacity building efforts to train young researchers in the field of learning health systems, and the development of a centralized metadata repository in support of creating a sufficient large evidence basis to support learning cycles in the Swiss health system. Further, they will discuss lessons learned from the past and the newest developments of the SLHS in light of a second funding phase supported by the Swiss government.

In March 2001, the University of Michigan Center for World Performance Studies celebrated its grand opening, inviting the community to participate in an evening of lectures, performances and food at the International Institute. This month, the Center begins the celebration of the 20th anniversary with a virtual panel discussion featuring three alumni of our graduate programs, who represent the diverse disciplinary fields, research interests and life work of our community. Each panelist will speak briefly about their current work, including fresh insights into the field of Performance Studies and ethnography, and then there will be a Q&A.

Mike Rahfaldt (PhD, Ethnomusicology ‘07) is the Executive Director of Children’s Radio Foundation, where he oversees the international operations from Cape Town, South Africa. Before joining the Children’s Radio Foundation in 2006, Michal taught media and anthropology at the University of Cape Town. As a journalist, he has contributed to Public Radio International, BBC World Service, NPR, and the New York Times.

Lani Teves (PhD, American Culture ‘12) is an Associate Professor in Women’s Studies at University of Hawaiʻi. She has written about Hawaiian hip-hop, film, and sexuality in the Pacific. She specializes in theorizing alternate forms of Kanaka Maoli gender performance and recognition politics. Her approach is informed by Indigenous feminist methodologies and ʻŌiwi epistemologies. Teves is the author of *Defiant Indigeneity: The Politics of Hawaiian Performance *(UNC Press 2018).

Masimba Hwati (MFA, Art, ‘19) is a multidisciplinary artist working in the intersections of sculpture video performance and sound. Hwati explores the transformation and evolution of knowledge systems that are indigenous to his own background whilst experimenting with the symbolism and perceptions attached to cultural objects, expressed as an art movement known as "The Energy of Objects". His work has been shown in Germany, France, Canada, London, the US, Australia, and Southern Africa. In 2015, he represented Zimbabwe at the 56th edition of the Venice Biennale in Italy.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

While reproducibility can be an important hallmark of good science, it is not often the most important indicator. The discipline of metrology, or measurement science, describes a measurement result as a value and the uncertainty around that value. We propose a systematic process for considering the sources of uncertainty in a scientific study that can be applied to virtually all

disciplines of scientific research. We suggest that a research study can be characterized by how sources of uncertainty in the study are reported and mitigated. This approach provides a path for sharing experimental data on complex systems such as biological network processes. A serious challenge for such studies involves collecting experimental metadata and protocol details.

Bio:

Dr. Plant is currently a NIST Fellow, focusing on cell imaging and theoretical frameworks for understanding complex biological response in cells. She is an ex officio member of the NIBIB National Advisory Council, a Fellow of the AIMBE, and an AAAS Fellow. She previously served as Chief of the Biosystems and Biomaterials Division at NIST, and in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

In March 2001, the University of Michigan Center for World Performance Studies (CWPS) celebrated its grand opening, inviting the community to participate in an evening of lectures, performances and food at the International Institute. As part of the ongoing virtual celebration of this milestone, CWPS invites four esteemed U-M faculty members to reflect on the Center’s founding, its contributions to increasing the diversity of arts and research at University of Michigan, and to imagine the possibilities for the next twenty years.

Kwasi Ampene, Associate Professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, is a scholar and practitioner of ethnomusicology. He specializes in the rich musical traditions of the Akan people of West Africa. His research interests include the performing arts as individually and collectively created and experienced, the performance of historical and social memory, politics, ideologies, values, and religious philosophy in Akan court music. Professor Ampene’s latest book, *Asante Court Music and Verbal Arts in Ghana: The Porcupine and the Gold Stool*, was published on June 30th, 2020 by Routledge. Dr. Ampene was Director of the Center for World Performance Studies from 2011-2016.

Lester Monts is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Music (ethnomusicology). From 1993 until 2014, he served as senior vice provost for academic affairs and senior counselor to the president for the arts, diversity, and undergraduate affairs. He is currently director of the Michigan Musical Heritage Project that seeks to capture on film the state’s folk, ethnic, and immigrant music traditions. Monts received a bachelor’s degree in music education from Arkansas Polytechnic College, a master’s degree in trumpet performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a doctorate in ethnomusicology from the University of Minnesota.

Mbala Nkanga is an Associate Professor of Theatre and head of the minor in Global Theatre & Ethnic Studies. A native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he taught directing, scenography and dramaturgical analysis at the Institut National des Arts in Kinshasa (DRC) beginning in 1979. He has directed plays in various professional companies there, such as Bernard Dadié’s Béatrice du Congo, Wole Soyinka’s A Dance of the Forests, and Réné Kalisky’s Aïda Vaincue. Dr. Nkanga received his PhD in Performance Studies from Northwestern University, and has led the Center for World Performance Studies graduate seminar since 1999.

Robin Wilson is an Associate Professor of Dance at the University of Michigan, on the faculty since 1995, and is best known as a founding member of New York’s Urban Bush Women. In 1995, she was awarded a New York Performance Award for the collective work of the Urban Bush Women from 1984-1994. Her studio teaching is informed by years of study in various mid-twentieth century modern dance and Afro-Caribbean folkloric dance techniques. She performed in New York for more than a decade with such choreographers as Dianne McIntyre, Kevin Wynn, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. Professor Wilson served on the Center for World Performance Studies faculty advisory committee for over a decade.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

How the Measurement and Meaning of Family Structure Shape Research on Young Adult Racial Inequality (April 5, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/80124 80124-21397361@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 5, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Institute for Social Research

POSTPONED.
This event will be rescheduled for a future date.
POSTPONED.

At the population level, Black and White youth in the United States enter adulthood after a lifetime of divergent family structure experiences. A substantial social science literature has investigated whether this variation in childhood family structure contributes to racial disparities in the timing, sequence, and context of events in the transition into adulthood. This discussion adopts a critical perspective on mainstream research on this topic. The panelists highlight opportunities in family demography, social stratification, human development, and race and ethnic studies to advance theory, measurement, and empirical modeling in order to more accurately reflect Black family organization and to situate Black and White families in the a broader context of racialized social, economic, and political inequality.

Paula Fomby is a research associate professor in the Survey Research Center and Population Studies Center, Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan. She holds a PhD in Sociology with an emphasis in social demography from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research considers how family composition and family process contribute to variation in child and young adult well-being, particularly in the context of social inequality. Fomby is the associate director of the UM Population Studies Center, a co-investigator on the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), and the associate director of the PSID Child Development Supplement.

Christina Cross is a postdoctoral fellow and incoming assistant professor of Sociology at Harvard University. She completed her PhD in Sociology and Public Policy at University of Michigan. Her research examines how family structure, change, and dynamics influence individual wellbeing across the life course, particularly among minority and/or low-income populations. Much of her work has focused on childhood as a key stage in the life course for the emergence and accumulation of social advantages or disadvantages.

Bethany Letiecq is an associate professor in the Human Development and Family Science program at George Mason University. - She received her PhD in health education/family studies and her MS in family and community development from the University of Maryland, College Park.Dr. Letiecq employs community-based participatory and action research approaches to conduct research in partnership with families systematically marginalized by society to promote family health and justice. She is keenly interested in how social policies and practices facilitate or hinder family functioning and health across all families.

**Presented in partnership with the DEI Educational Programs Working Group: Inclusive Teaching Series and the Michigan Program in Survey Methodology.**

Population Studies Center (PSC) Brown Bag seminars highlight recent research in population studies and serve as a focal point for building our research community.

The day’s highlights will include sharing of our initial efforts in interprofessional education and collaborative care and discussion of opportunities for the growth of collaboration across the health science schools and the broader campus community.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for World Performance Studies

Free & Open to the public
Registration required: https://myumi.ch/E30vd

In this virtual series, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment. For this session, Dr. Ramón H. Rivera-Servera will discuss his recent research in Puerto Rico, including an innovative outreach initiative to assist Puerto Rican artists in the aftermath of hurricanes Maria and Irma. Participants can learn about this research ahead of the session by visiting the Mellon Foundation blog: https://mellon.org/shared-experiences-blog/after-storm/

Ramón H. Rivera-Servera is chair of the Department of Performance Studies and the Department of Theatre in the School of Communication at Northwestern University, and was recently appointed as the next dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on 20th and 21st Century performance in North America and the Caribbean with special emphasis on the ways categories of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are negotiated across national borders through migratory circuits of circulation and exchange. His work documents a wide array of performance practices ranging from theatre and concert dance to social dance, popular music, fashion, and speech.

He is author of *Performing Queer Latinidad: Dance, Sexuality, Politics* (University of Michigan Press, 2012), a study of the role performance played in the development of Latina/o queer publics in the United States from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s.

He is currently completing a book manuscript, *Reggaetón’s Queer Turn: Sexuality, Abstraction, and Contemporary Art in the Circum-Caribbean*, which pursues feminist and queer uptakes of the popular music and dance cultures of reggaetón in circum-Caribbean contemporary art to theorize the role of black aesthetics in the sexual cultural politics of the Spanish speaking Caribbean and its diaspora. He is also conducting fieldwork and archival research towards two other projects: *Exhibiting Performance: Race, Museum Cultures, and the Live Event*, which looks at the ways race has been collected and exhibited in North America and the Caribbean since the mid-1990s and *Choreographing the Latina/o Post-Modern: Puerto Rican Moves in the New York Dance Avant-Garde*, a cultural history of Puerto Rican participation in the New York City experimental dance scene since the 1980s.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Post-Binary Feminisms Working Group Launch (April 7, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83477 83477-21385569@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 7, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Digital Studies Institute

Contact: Marisa Olson,
Executive Director umarisa@umich.edu

The Postbinary Feminisms Working Group is dedicated to exploring new theoretical writings and practices in the area of contemporary feminist thought, through the lens of technology-related issues.

The word “postbinary“ is, at the very least, a mnemonic device here, referring to both gender binaries and digital binary code. "Postbinary Feminisms" refers to the temporal moment after which the field has generally started to approach gender from a more fluid perspective; contemporaneous with a moment in which humanists have begun to reflect critically upon the ways in which the history of technology has been one in which women, people of color, people with disabilities, members of LGBTQ+ communities, the working classes, and others have been further marginalized by the cultural and infrastructural affects surrounding digital technology.

Postbinary Feminisms ought then be understood as not only intersectional, but also explicitly anti-racist; owing a legacy to those feminist thinkers who also worked to raise consciousness around racial binaries.

The Working Group will discuss new work by members of the field, across the disciplines; invite periodic guest lecturers; and hear from members of the University of Michigan community working on projects relevant to the group's focus.

We provide empirical evidence that visceral factors affect financial risk taking by showing that exposure to mass shootings alters mutual fund managers’ risk taking decisions. Funds that are exposed to mass shootings subsequently decrease risk relative to their peers. The effect that we document is temporary, lasting approximately one quarter before reverting to normal levels and is strongest among managers with demographics shown to express greater fear from mass shootings. Together with the literature on laboratory studies that show that market downturns induce fear, our findings suggest that fear could exacerbate variation in risk taking, generating the highly volatile countercyclical risk premiums shown to exist in markets.

Ziibimijwang Farm is helping restore food sovereignty for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians and other communities throughout the northern Great Lakes region.

What opportunities and benefits are there for Native American Tribes and Communities in operating a sustainable, community-based farm?  What are the challenges associated with this approach and how can they be successfully managed?  How can collaboration with tribal and non-tribal institutions, such as the University of Michigan's Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum, help promote Ziibimijwang’s mission?

Please join us as Joe Van Alstine will discuss ways in which Ziibimijwang is working to provide a reliable food source for tribal community members independent of the larger food system, encourage healthy eating, and enhance people’s knowledge of how to raise their own food. Matthaei-Nichols Curator David Michener and Campus Farm Program Manager  Jeremy Moghtadar will also be part of the discussion panel.

Science fiction has engaged with religious ideas and topics throughout its history. It also has unique ways of approaching a religion such as Christianity with its strong historical focus. On the one hand, time travel technology means that one can visit the first century to look for Jesus or attempt to witness the resurrection. On the other hand, stories of humanity’s distant future among the stars allows reflection on where our past and present trajectories might take our religious traditions. Stories set in the very near future also provide opportunities to explore possible reactions to new technologies or alien encounters. This presentation will provide a survey of treatments of these topics as we consider how the history of science fiction provides insights on the history of Christianity.

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 (NAGPRA) created a federal legal process for the return of Native American human remains and cultural items to Native American Tribes and Native Hawaiian Organizations. However, the work that museums and tribes complete together can also be used as an opportunity to create good and lasting relationships that extend beyond NAGPRA.

How can museum best practices and traditional tribal knowledge work together in mutually beneficial ways? How can transparency and mutual respect forge productive relationships between tribes and museums? How can future collaborations emerge as a result of the personal and professional relationships that are developed?

The panelists will provide a basic overview of NAGPRA compliance through a consideration of both the tribal and museum sides of the process. They will also draw from practical experience to show how indigenous knowledge and teachings can help inform and improve professional methods of care and an understanding of the best practices of museums.

President Biden’s next step in our recovery, the American Jobs Plan, would be the most transformational set of policies to pass in decades.

In its first 100 days alone, the Biden-Harris Administration has already acted swiftly and boldly to help Americans recover from the COVID-19 crisis—accelerating vaccinations, reopening schools, and providing relief to small businesses, states, and cities that faced a difficult 2020.

President Biden’s next step in our recovery, the American Jobs Plan, would be the most transformational set of policies to pass in decades. But how will Congress approach the plan? And, if enacted, how will it support American jobs, lift up workers, bolster equity, and reduce carbon pollution?

Please join Third Way and the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering for our premier Fastest Path to Zero event of the year on April 29 from 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM ET, featuring:

A conversation with US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm on the Biden-Harris Administration’s clean energy priorities.
A presentation from University of Michigan’s Ford School of Public Policy professor Dr. Barry Rabe on presidential transitions
A panel with Reps. Susan Wild (D-PA), Ritchie Torres (D-NY), Roy Houseman, Heather Zichal, and Third Way’s Ryan Fitzpatrick to discuss the Biden-Harris climate and clean energy agenda.
SPEAKERS:

Secretary Jennifer Granholm, U.S. Department of Energy

Josh Freed, Senior Vice President for the Climate and Energy Program, Third Way

Dr. Barry Rabe, Professor, Ford School of Public Policy, University of Michigan

Computing our way out of a pandemic: modeling in the face of COVID-19 (May 6, 2021 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/83689 83689-21454211@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 6, 2021 9:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering

The COVID-19 pandemic has produced massive amounts of information that require an accurate analysis to predict outcomes and design solutions rapidly. It also has required experts from many different backgrounds to rally around in the quest for rapid responses in the race to save lives.

Many of the most prominent of these researchers are from Michigan, and a significant number of them are computational scientists who addressed questions such as: What measures should be taken to minimize contagion? Is it safe to ride a bus? How are supply and demand chains being affected?

This virtual symposium will bring together researchers from the State of Michigan to share their past and future insights into the pandemic.

This is a free Zoom event, open to the general public. Please register to attend: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_47ZZyf_ZTFqwef3kd8icsg
