A same-sex Jewish marriage contract (Ketubah). A sign for gender inclusive bathrooms in a Jewish Community Center. A Christmas tree adorned with rainbow-colored ornaments and a Star of David topper. These are three of the 21 photos-with-narratives that constitute “Hineinu – Here We Are: An LGBTQ+ Jewish Photovoice Exhibit.” Combined with rich, thought-provoking text, these photos give insight into the varied experiences of local community members who are both Jewish and queer.

“Photovoice” is the process of putting cameras in the hands of traditionally “voiceless” or marginalized community members to allow them to record, reflect on, and share their community’s strengths and concerns. Photovoice participants have the opportunity to capture their current experiences through pictures, with the goal of sparking dialogue and action related to the themes depicted in the photos.

As you view this Photovoice exhibit, we hope that you will consider what it means to be inclusive and welcoming, and that you will continue to develop an awareness of the diversity of other people’s experiences both within and outside of the Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities.

Organized By: Spectrum Center

Envisioned as an event that meets the need for LGBTQ spaces and visibility, the LGBTQ monologues is a platform for all of our stories to be heard. Last year the event enabled twelve students to share a personal portrait of queer and trans life at the university in front of an audience of 150 people.

This year our goal in celebrating the 2nd annual student performances, is to build partnerships with the local community and student organizations - to accurately represent the LGBTQ population on campus and the width of experiences students faced. The theme this year is "More Pride. More Color". We recognize that it is critical that the intersecting identities within the LGBTQ community are accurately represented and are given the equal opportunity to be heard.

Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar (IISS) Workshop. Queer Liminality: Gender and Sexuality in Raafat Hattab’s "Ho(u)ria" (October 19, 2018 12:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/56118 56118-13832588@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 19, 2018 12:30pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Global Islamic Studies Center

Dr. Sascha Crasnow is lecturer of Islamic art in the Residential College at the University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. in art history, theory, and criticism from the University of California San Diego in 2018. Her current book manuscript, "After the Intifadas: Art in the Age of Disillusionment," examines shifts in contemporary art production in the post-Second Intifada period among Palestinian artists living and making work within historic Palestine. This project, which is based on her dissertation research, has been solicited by Duke University Press.

Workshop Topic:
For LGBTQ individuals in Palestine, issues of gender and sexuality are inherently intertwined with their positions as individuals living under occupation. This is perhaps most notably visible through the eliding of Israel’s human rights abuses against Palestinians by Brand Israel (the primary pro-Israel propaganda project) through a portrayal of Israel as the singular gay-friendly, culturally progressive Middle Eastern country—a practice that has been termed “pinkwashing.” For Palestinians living within the state of Israel who identify as queer, they may feel caught between two societies into which they do not fit: Israeli society, where they are an outcast because of their Palestinianness, and Palestinian society, where they are an outcast because of their gender expression or sexuality. This leaves some individuals in a state of twofold liminality. In this paper, I utilize this notion of liminality as relates to the trans* experience discussed by Diane Dentice and Michelle Dietert to examine Ho(u)ria (2010), a video work by genderqueer Palestinian artist Raafat Hattab. Haatab’s video alternates between three scenes: a mermaid (Hattab) on the beach, Hattab’s aunt telling the story of her family’s expulsion from their homes during the Nakba (Arabic for “catastrophe” referring to the formation of Israel and expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians), and Hattab getting a tattoo of Arabic calligraphy on his chest. While on the surface appearing disparate, these three scenes all speak to the intrinsically interwoven nature of liminality, the omission of certain voices from the nationalist struggle, and the persistent fight for liberation, as embodied by the work’s title—houria, meaning mermaid, and horia, meaning freedom.

My Butch Career: A Memoir (November 2, 2018 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/52889 52889-13107799@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 2, 2018 2:00pm
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Lesbian, Gay, Queer Research Initiative (LGQRI)

Join LGQRI in celebrating Esther Newton’s forthcoming memoir.

During her difficult childhood, Esther Newton recalls that she “became an anti-girl, a girl refusenik, caught between genders,” and that her “child body was a strong and capable instrument stuffed into the word ‘girl.’” Later, in early adulthood, as she was on her way to becoming a trailblazing figure in gay and lesbian studies, she “had already chosen higher education over the strongest passion in my life, my love for women, because the two seemed incompatible.”

In her new memoir, Newton tells the compelling, disarming, and at times sexy story of her struggle to write, teach, and find love, all while coming to terms with her identity during a particularly intense time of homophobic persecution in the twentieth century.

Affecting and immediate, "My Butch Career" is a story of a gender outlaw in the making, an invaluable account of a beloved and influential figure in LGBT history, and a powerful reminder of only how recently it has been possible to be an openly queer academic.

SPEAKER BIO:
Esther Newton, one of the pioneers of gay and lesbian studies, is formerly Term Professor of Women's Studies at the University of Michigan and Professor of Anthropology at Purchase College, State University of New York. She is the author of several books, including "Margaret Mead Made Me Gay: Personal Essays, Public Ideas" and "Cherry Grove, Fire Island: Sixty Years in America's First Gay and Lesbian Town," both published by Duke University Press, as well as the groundbreaking "Mother Camp: Female Impersonators in America."

Event Accessibility:
Ramp and elevator access at the E. Washington Street entrance (by loading dock). Accessible restrooms on south end of Lane Hall, on each floor of the building. Gender neutral restroom on first floor.

"Jane Miller’s eleventh book, Who Is Trixie the Trasher? and Other Questions, is a hyper-political and brassy collection of poems that questions authority, sexism, ageism, and romance in the face of mortality. Differing from her earlier poems in their range and urgency, this collection retains Miller’s signature lyric voice, personal yet thrilling in its associative leaps. Her intimate language illuminates and soothes our current trauma―especially as experienced by women―where nightmarish reality must answer to human dignity."

Jane Miller will read from her newest book, speak about contemporary poetry, and answer questions.

Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC)

SAPAC, in co-sponsorship with Spectrum Center and CEW+, are bringing Corey Kempster and Jari Jones to talk about their relationship and love. The event is specifically near Valentine's Day, a holiday that is often very heteronormative and hurtful for people who hold marginalized identities. We hope that by creating an affirming and inclusive space that is a great representation of love and healthy relationship norms we can promote inclusivity and respect in all relationships on our campus!

Jari Jones is an actress/model/singer/activist who channels her talents into powerful trans-centric storytelling. She has been featured on FX’s Pose, starred in an Off-Broadway show called “The Sex Myth,” and just finished filming a movie with Leyna Bloom, directed by Martin Scorsese. Corey Kempster is a counselor for LGBT youth who are experiencing homelessness in addition to doing some modeling and acting. Together they have become an icon for healthy, positive queer relationships and have done numerous speaking and activism events around the country.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Cartographies of Silence: A Conference for Readers and Writers
23rd Annual CLIFF Conference
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
March 15-16, 2019
Keynote Speaker: Professor Irena Klepfisz

It was an old theme even for me:Language cannot do everything– -- Adrienne Rich, “Cartographies of Silence”

Silence is not an absence, but is charged with meaning and action. To speak of silence means to speak of a multitude of paradoxes, as well as to enter an exciting avenue for literature, activism and interdisciplinary scholarship. Our conference interrogates what it means to plumb silences in the archive in search of unheard voices, and invites scholars to investigate the meanings of silence as a critical category. In particular, this conference is interested in mapping – across scholarly and creative disciplines – questions of translating silences in the archive, in the text, in the subject, and in activism. What are the possible ways of translating silence when events and experiences resist such translation? What challenges and possibilities does silence offer translators and scholars, who are tasked with making meaning of both the enunciated and the unsaid or untranslatable? How can we engage with knowledge that does not yield itself to current academic frameworks? In what ways can a focus on silence help to transform knowledge itself?

Professor Irena Klepfisz received her doctorate from the University of Chicago in Victorian literature, and later did post-doctoral work in Yiddish at YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. In addition to teaching in numerous universities around the country, Klepfisz taught for ten years in the college program at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, a women’s maximum security prison. Last year, she retired after 22 years of teaching Jewish Women's Studies at Barnard College. Klepfisz immigrated to the U.S. at age 8 and was raised among Yiddish-speaking, Jewish Labor Bundist (socialist) Holocaust survivors in the Bronx, where she attended public schools, a Yiddish shule, and mitlshul. She was an activist during the Second Wave, particularly in the lesbian/feminist movement, and addressed issues of anti-Semitism, Israeli/Palestinian peace, Jewish identity, and veltlekhe yidishkayt/secular Yiddish culture.

Klepfisz’s extensive publishing and performance record includes founding and co-editing Conditions magazine, serving as the Yiddish editor of the Jewish feminist Bridges, contributing to Nice Jewish Girls: A Lesbian Anthology, and co-editing The Tribe of Dina: A Jewish Women’s Anthology. She authored two performance pieces commissioned by the Jewish Museum (NY): Bread and Candy: Songs of the Holocaust and Zeyre eygene verter: In their own words (Yiddish women writers). She is the author of A Few Words in the Mother Tongue (poems) and Dreams of an Insomniac (essays), and most recently co-edited The Stars Bear Witness: The Jewish Labor Bund 1897-2017 and Koved zeyer ondenk: Honor to Their Memory (for the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising).

Organized By: Jewish Communal Leadership Program

The Jewish Communal Leadership Program at the University of Michigan School of Social Work and the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies, working in partnership with the Jewish Women’s Archive, present Jewish Feminisms/American Visions: Perspectives from Fifty Years of Activism. This historic event brings together 36 pioneering and contemporary feminist activists, leaders, and thinkers to consider the role of Jewish identity in the framing and development of second wave American feminism. Building on the interpretations offered by historian Joyce Antler in her recent book, "Jewish Radical Feminism: Voices from the Women's Liberation Movement", activists from the 1960s through today will reexamine the contexts, experiences, and identities that went into creating American feminism and its impact on Jewish culture, politics, and religion.

Punishing Disease: HIV and the Criminalization of Sickness (March 21, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/57791 57791-14306150@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 21, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

From the very beginning of the epidemic, AIDS was linked to punishment. Calls to punish people living with HIV—mostly stigmatized minorities—began before doctors had even settled on a name for the disease. Punishing Disease looks at how HIV was transformed from sickness to badness under the criminal law and investigates the consequences of inflicting penalties on people living with disease. Now that the door to criminalizing sickness is open, what other ailments will follow? With moves in state legislatures to extend HIV-specific criminal laws to include diseases such as hepatitis and meningitis, the question is more than academic.

Trevor Hoppe research analyzes the social control of sex by institutions of medicine, law, and public health. His recently published book, Punishing Disease: HIV and the Criminalization of Sickness (University of California Press) analyzes the rise of punitive and coercive responses to HIV; Punishing Disease was awarded the 2018 Lambda Literary Award in LGBTQ Studies. He is also the co-editor of the recently published collection, The War on Sex (co-edited with David Halperin with Duke University Press), which analyzes the punitive social control of sex (and was a finalist for the 2018 Lambda Literary Award in LGBTQ Studies). In addition to these book projects, Hoppe is also researching and publishing on the growth and impact of American sex offender registries, particularly the use of “sexually violent predator” statutes that allow for the civil confinement of sex offenders beyond their court-ordered sentence.

He earned his PhD in Sociology and Women’s Studies from the University of Michigan in 2014

Queer Spiritual Drifting: Site-Specific Performance and Writing

Tuesday, April 2, 2019
6:00pm
Walgreen Drama Center, Room B207

How can drifting find space on the page? Let’s think together about connections between performance practice and writing, about embodiment and the page, and about widening audiencing procedures for performance. In 2017, Petra Kuppers travelled to Belgium and the Netherlands as part of an Olimpias disability performance exploration of queer spiritual asylum spaces. In this talk, Petra will discuss these performance actions and the resulting publication, a travelogue essay in Performance Research, ‘Queer Spiritual Drifting: Not at home in The Beguinage.’

The Center for World Performance Studies Faculty Lecture Series features our Faculty Fellows and visiting scholars and practitioners in the fields of ethnography and performance. Designed to create an informal and intimate setting for intellectual exchange among students, scholars, and the community, faculty are invited to present their work in an interactive and performative fashion.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777, at least one week in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Epsilon Eta is Umich's only Pre-Profesional Environmental Co-Ed Fraternity. We seek to develop a more robust network of students, researchers, employers, and agencies to more effectively deal with the realities of our world’s changing climate and loss of biodiversity. By fostering a conscious awareness of the intrinsic relationship between people and their environment through academics, the community, and service, we seek to bridge the gap from the undergraduate atmosphere to professional environmental fields for students at Michigan.
Although we are inclusive of all majors, we require an interest in the environmental field. By pledging Epsilon Eta, you will become a member of an eclectic group of driven, intelligent, and innovative peers, as well as gain access to professional, social, and volunteering resources.
This meeting will give you a chance to get a better sense of our organization and a chance to ask questions. We will also explain what our Fall Rush process consists of.

--

Hilton Als began contributing to The New Yorker in 1989, writing pieces for ‘The Talk of the Town,’ he became a staff writer in 1994, theatre critic in 2002, and lead theater critic in 2012. Week after week, he brings to the magazine a rigorous, sharp, and lyrical perspective on acting, playwriting, and directing. With his deep knowledge of the history of performance—not only in theatre but in dance, music, and visual art—he shows us how to view a production and how to place its director, its author, and its performers in the ongoing continuum of dramatic art. His reviews are not simply reviews; they are provocative contributions to the discourse on theatre, race, class, sexuality, and identity in America.

Before coming to The New Yorker, Als was a staff writer for the Village Voice and an editor-at-large at Vibe. Als edited the catalogue for the 1994-95 Whitney Museum of American Art exhibition “Black Male: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary American Art.” His first book, The Women, was published in 1996. His book, White Girls, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2014 and winner of the 2014 Lambda Literary Award for Non-fiction, discusses various narratives of race and gender. He is author of the introduction to the Penguin Classics edition of The Early Stories of Truman Capote. He is also guest editor for the 2018 Best American Essays (Mariner Books, October 2, 2018). He also wrote Andy Warhol: The Series, a book containing two previously unpublished television scripts for a series on the life of Andy Warhol.

In 1997, the New York Association of Black Journalists awarded Als first prize in both Magazine Critique/Review and Magazine Arts and Entertainment. He was awarded a Guggenheim for creative writing in 2000 and the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism for 2002-03. In 2016, he received Lambda Literary’s Trustee Award for Excellence in Literature, in 2017 Als won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, and in 2018 the Langston Hughes Medal.

In 2009, Als worked with the performer Justin Bond on “Cold Water,” an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and videos by performers, at La MaMa Gallery. In 2010, he co-curated “Self-Consciousness,” at the VeneKlasen/Werner gallery, in Berlin, and published “Justin Bond/Jackie Curtis.” In 2015, he collaborated with the artist Celia Paul to create “Desdemona for Celia by Hilton,” an exhibition for the Metropolitan Opera’s Gallery Met. In 2016, his debut art show “One Man Show: Holly, Candy, Bobbie and the Rest” opened at the Artist’s Institute. In 2017 he curated "Alice Neel, Uptown" at the David Zwirner Gallery in New York City.

Als is an associate professor of writing at Columbia University’s School of the Arts and has taught at Yale University, Wesleyan, and Smith College. He lives in New York City.

Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns. Come join a drop in, guided mindful meditation sit and practice being aware and fully present in the moment.

Free and open to all levels of practice. Registration is helpful for planning or for notification of a canceled session but is not required.

What if your ability to succeed in your classes was determined in part before you even stepped into the classroom? What is the one quality you need to overcome adversity academically and in life? This workshop will detail the research of Dr. Carol Dweck and her groundbreaking work on the concept of mindset. Students will learn how to abandon a debilitating fixed mindset in favor of a growth mindset, leading to success in areas they once considered too difficult. The workshop will also introduce students to the research of Dr. Angela Duckworth, and how a growth mindset can lead to the development of grit, an essential characteristic to overcoming our fear of failure.

The study and learning strategies students often bring to college are often insufficient to help them succeed at the university level. Particularly in challenging STEM courses, students can't simply memorize or cram their way to a good grade. This workshop will focus on the popular learning strategies to avoid, as well as the top three strategies you don't know but are shown by research to be the most effective for long-term learning.

Ochy Curiel, Universidad Nacional de Colombia
“Encuentros y Desencuentros: Between Decolonial Feminism and Cuir/Queer Theory and Practice" (in Spanish).

Drawing on decolonial feminism which brings together and is complicated by the contributions, theories, analyses and practices of the most critical currents in feminism—such as Black feminism, feminist autonomous separatism, lesbian feminism, the feminism of indigenous women and Abya Yala’s indigenous origins—as well as the contributions of the decolonial turn around the historical construction of modernity and coloniality, this presentation seeks to problematize certain cuir/queer positions and analyses which only consider those bodies that are generated by and sexualized within privileged positions in regards to race, class, and geopolitics. At the same time, this paper tries to revive more critical and radical cuir/queer positions that contribute to constructing projects of social transformation and collective emancipation.

Ochy Curiel is professor of Gender Studies at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. She is an Afro-Dominican feminist, lesbian, anti-racist, and decolonial singer/scholar/activist who has been at the forefront of contemporary Afro-feminist movements throughout Latin America.
