Sergei Alipov has been among Russia’s leading sculptors since his first exhibits in the late 1970s. Among his many widely-praised works are his 1991 monument to Alfred Nobel (St Petersburg) and his 2016 monument to the poet Nikolai Klyuev in the poet’s hometown, Vytegra (Vologda region).

Alipov will talk about the highly contentious erection of new and removal of old public statues across the former Soviet Union – a process which has, in the last two decades, been one of the most visible signs of the ongoing disputes about history, responsibility, nationality, and identity. His talk will provide the opportunity not only to reflect on these processes in the post-Soviet space, but also on somewhat analogous issues that are proving to be very contentious in the United States today.

Light refreshments will be served.

If you have ever been on a job interview, you may have experienced how we can sometimes freeze up in high-pressure situations. When interviewing in one’s second language, our typical fluency can abandon us, and dealing with the technology can add to an already stressful situation. In this workshop, we will practice mock interviews, explore interviewing strategies, and identify ways to prepare for fluent communication in the Skype interview setting. Bring a job posting or employer profile with you, and your CV or resume.

In 1922, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein declared that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With the globally-connected community at the University of Michigan in mind, we invite you to an exploration of the cross-cultural academic expressive production that accompanies thinking and writing from a non-English background. Taking the University of Michigan as a case study, we hope to engage questions of scholarship and public expression incubated in the globalized environment that is the contemporary American university. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of English as a Second Language or as a lingua franca, we seek a discussion around scholarly expression in a multicultural, globalized academia. How does an American academic culture of expression interact with the increasingly international body of authors on campus? And, what does it mean to think and write from a non-normative background? Please join us for a scholarly conversation on multilingualism and the pleasures and difficulties of translation.

Speakers:
Pär Cassel (History & International Relations)
Gottfried Hagen (Near Eastern Studies)
Se-Mi Oh (Asian Languages & Cultures)
Benjamin Paloff (Comparative & Slavic Literature)
Will Thomson (Anthropology & Architecture)

Null models for cultural and social evolution (January 30, 2018 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/49243 49243-11397819@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, January 30, 2018 11:30am
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: The Center for the Study of Complex Systems

Analogies between biological and cultural evolution date back to Darwin, yet the analogies have remained loose. Neutral evolution, known to be important in biology, has been proposed as a null model for cultural change, but has not been developed into tests for selection on cultural features. Using inference in time series of alternative word forms and grammatical constructions, I demonstrate a cultural analog of natural selection on a background of neutral evolution. Social evolution, on the other hand, implies selection in a social environment and therefore cannot be described with a neutral model. I propose a model of pure frequency-dependent selection as a generic null model for social evolution, and use inference under the model to illustrate diverse effects of social selection. I show complex forms of frequency dependent selection---including positive and negative frequency-dependent selection at different frequencies---in the copying of baby names, the fashions of dog breeds, and the use of rare languages.

Are you a graduate student with a virtually impossible reading load? You are not alone. While it is possible to read and understand text more quickly, real reading efficiency comes from reading text more strategically. In this workshop, we will learn about strategies for prioritizing attention, understanding and remembering what we read, and aligning reading strategy with our purpose for reading (e.g. preparing for seminar discussion, developing a literature review, refining our research methods, or writing a response paper). Bring a paper or electronic copy example of the kind of text you’re trying to read more efficiently.

Though there is robust morphological evidence for small units of word formation such as roots to account for patterns of lexical relatedness, the syntactic significance of roots and their role in capturing syntactic generalizations are not as empirically well grounded. For example, in non-concatenative morphological systems, such as Arabic, the root has figured prominently as a primitive unit of derivation that provides a mechanism to account for lexical relations that resist accounts in terms of the familiar patterns of morphological concatenation through prefixation or suffixation to a base. In syntax, recent accounts have invoked the notion of root, mostly on conceptual grounds, to account, for example, for the constructional meaning of sentences and the interplay between functional categories and lexical categories. In this talk, I take up the question of the role of the root in syntax and whether there are empirically principled restrictions on access to it. I will present empirical arguments to show that such principled restrictions can be motivated and that they are consistent with recent developments in syntactic theory, and particularly the relation between the syntactic component and the morpho-phonological interface.

Making conversation or “small talk” is one of the most challenging types of speaking to master in a second language. In this workshop, we will explore conversation topics, turn-taking strategies, active listening, and sources for sample conversations. We will consider different varieties of small talk in common graduate student contexts, such as getting to know classmates or seeming friendly and confident at a job interview or as a GSI. Come ready to practice with one another and to identify effective ways to practice on your own.

A Field of Foundlings: Selected Poetry of Iryna Starovoyt (February 9, 2018 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/47487 47487-10932334@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 9, 2018 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Slavic Languages & Literatures

Presented in a dual-language format, A Field of Foundlings is the first in Lost Horse Press's series of Ukrainian poetry in translation. Starovoyt's poetry investigates the curse and virtue of forgetting, the suppressed generational memory of the twentieth century, and the new context of its retelling in Eastern Europe. Drawing on the paradoxes of mythology, technology, and tradition, Starovoyt brings the traces of undesirable history and the minefields of memory into an unexpected constellation to interrogate assertions of knowledge and meaning-making in the world today. In a time where the chaos and power of forces beyond our own seem to diminish the potency of the past, Starovoyt's poems invoke a conscious dialogue with a past that is not severed from the ever-changing present, but echoes in our sense of self, brings some continuity to our daily decisions, and orients us toward the future.

Lost and Found in the Digital (February 14, 2018 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/49454 49454-11462132@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 14, 2018 2:00pm
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: Emergent Research Group

As the number of digital humanities approaches continues to grow, libraries and other institutions must increasingly grapple with how to catalog, preserve, and present digital work, which means engaging big, time-critical conversations about standards and possibilities in the face of constant technological emergence. In this presentation, however, I will be asking us to think about the smallness of individuals, namely the interplay between the ephemeral and the institutional that has become increasingly recognizable as foundational to many scholars' intellectual growth. As the digital increasingly becomes part of the terrain, what will count as a scholarly legacy? What have digital affordances fundamentally changed about our potential relationships to the scholarly industrial complex? What has been lost? Who has been found? And how do these considerations fit into a larger conversation about digital preservation?

Marisa Parham is Professor of English at Amherst College, and directs the Immersive Reality Lab for the Humanities, which is a workgroup for digital and experimental humanities. She also serves as a faculty diversity and inclusion officer. Her current teaching and research projects focus on texts and technologies that problematize assumptions about time, space, and bodily materiality. She is particularly interested in how such terms share a history of increasing complexity in texts produced by African Americans, and how they also offer ways of thinking about intersectional approaches to digital humanities and technology studies.

Marisa Parham holds a PhD in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University, and is the author of Haunting and Displacement in African-American Literature and Culture, The African-American Student’s Guide to College, and is co-editor of Theorizing Glissant: Sites and Citations. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, and formerly served on the founding Board of Directors for the Amherst Cinema Arts Center. She is also a former director of the Five College Digital Humanities Initiative, serving Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke, and Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Each participant sets their own objective at the start of the workshop and works toward their personal goals with a licensed speech-language pathologist. This 10-week workshop will help you build confidence with both group and individual activities.

University of Michigan German Department - 6th Annual Open-Book Translation Contest

Thursday, February 22,
4-5:30 p.m.,
Mason Hall 2401
(RSVP by Monday, February 19, 5 p.m.)

Students are invited to put their translation skills to the test by participating in the sixth annual University of Michigan German Department Open-Book Translation Contest! This contest will be judged by a panel of three faculty members. The entries will be identified only by the student’s university ID number, making the judging anonymous. There will be monetary prizes of $150 for first place, $125 for second place, and $100 for third place!

Participants: All undergraduate University of Michigan students currently enrolled in a German course or who are registered as a German major or minor are welcome to participate.

Registration: All contest participants are required to register for the contest by 5 p.m. on Monday, February 19! To register contact Andrew Mills: ajmills@umich.edu.

Alternative times: If students can demonstrate that they cannot make the contest time due to their class schedule or work schedule constraints, an alternative time and location can be arranged. This alternative time must be arranged and confirmed before 5 p.m. on Monday, February 19, and must take place at some point during the day of Thursday, February 22.

Contest Rules: The contest will be held under the same conditions used by the American Translators Association (ATA) for its certification exam. Students will have 70 minutes to translate a text by hand that will be provided for them. The translation will be from German to English. The contest will be held in “open book” format. Students will not have access to the internet, but may bring and use as many hardback or paperback dictionaries as they wish. All students receive the same text, which will be approximately 225-275 words in length. The contest must be written in (dark) pencil capable of being photo-copied for our judges. Students must bring their own pencils. Paper will be provided.

The text to be translated will be “general” in nature. This text expresses a view, sets forth an argument, or presents an idea or situation. Examples include: a newspaper article, an essay, or a passage from a non-fiction book. The contest passage is chosen in such a way as to avoid highly specialized terminology requiring research. There are, however, terminology challenges in the text, and knowledge of German culture, society, and history often is necessary for contestants to excel.

Challenge yourself! The worst that could happen is you discover how things stand with your translation skills. The best thing that could happen: you win some money!

Accommodations may be made for participants who demonstrate that they cannot write the text by hand. Please contact Andrew Mills at ajmills@umich.edu by 5 p.m. on Monday, February 19.

**reading in German with projected English translation**

Theodora Bauer is the author of two novels as well as stories and philosophical essays. A native of the Austrian province of Burgenland, Bauer's most recent novel Chikago follows the lives of three young protagonists fleeing poverty and misfortune on the 1920's Hungarian-Austrian border. A story with roots in lesser-known aspects of Austrian history, Chikago reminds readers that Central Europe was not always a destination of migrants seeking opportunity and a better life.

This visit is supported by the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan and the American Friends of Wien Museum and will includes readings in German.

A Field of Foundlings: Selected Poetry of Iryna Starovoyt (March 1, 2018 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/49979 49979-11611110@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 1, 2018 7:00pm

We are happy to invite you to this conversation between Mallory Whiteduck (American Culture) and Raya Naamneh (Comparative Literature) to comparatively and critically discuss indigeneity and the experiences of living under settler colonialism in both North America and Palestine. Thinking through these two fragmented geopolitical spaces, we hope to discuss the relevance of this transnational connection for the understanding of indigenous experiences and forms of anti-colonial resistance, past and present.
The event will include food and light refreshments.

Drawing on findings from dialect acquisition, historical linguistics, and variationist sociolinguistics, this talk addresses one of the most long-standing and central questions in the study of language change: How does change advance across successive generations of speakers? Past research has engaged in post-hoc theorizing about the continuous advancement of change but it has never addressed it directly. Because children must speak differently from their parents for any change to both survive and progress, only real time observation of the same speakers can provide answers to this question. I introduce a project that explicitly sets out to observe the onset and early progression of change in order to track the diachronic evolution of specific linguistic features, zeroing in on the period when children begin to participate in change by shifting their language model along an apparently pre-set direction of change.

You can go to the German Lab anytime for any kind of help (except we can't proofread your essays for you): if you need help with homework or a test review sheet (we can proofread your test essays for German 101-103), if you need grammar topics explained or reviewed or need more practice, if you just want to speak some German for fun and/or for your AMD etc. If you have time in the afternoons from 1-4 you could do your homework in the LRC - it's a great facility! Then if you get stuck on something, you can just stop by the German Lab alcove so we can get you unstuck. Mehr Info: https://resources.german.lsa.umich.edu/miscellaneous/deutschlabor/
