Making conversation or “small talk” is one of the most challenging types of speaking to master in a second language. In this workshop, we will explore conversation topics, turn-taking strategies, active listening, and sources for sample conversations. We will consider different varieties of small talk in common graduate student contexts, such as getting to know classmates or seeming friendly and confident at a job interview or as a GSI. Come ready to practice with one another and to identify effective ways to practice on your own.

Organized By: LSA Honors Program

There are two versions of personal identity that often clash in the artistic process originating in oppression; they destabilize the voice of the “Lyric I". This lecture will raise several questions about the relationship between personal biography and the construction of a lyric speaker, and will explore the notion of a poetics that insists on healing the damage politics does on family; it will discuss what happens when private and public identities become conflated because of politics, and how poetry “acts” on the sense of family as a social microcosm where the battle between political self of the private sense of self takes place.

One-Semester Study-Abroad Program in Tübingen (Winter 2019)

Saturday, September 15
(Application Deadline)

The program takes place in the Winter term, and it is intended for students who have completed at least German 221/231 by the end of the Fall 2018 term.

The German Department strongly recommends that you precede your stay in Tübingen by attending one or two four-week sessions at the Goethe Institut. This Goethe Institut segment is not part of the CGIS program itself. Please talk with Andrew or Kalli (German's undergraduate advisors) about the Goethe segment (contact information at https://lsa.umich.edu/german/undergraduate-students/german-studies/german-advising.html).

The CGIS portion in Tübingen will start early in March with a mandatory Kompaktkurs (6 credits) or a Startkurs (3 credits). While you will be enrolled for the Winter 2019 term at the University of Michigan, you will then take classes during "Sommersemester" at the Universität Tübingen (mid April - late July). You will earn 15-18 credits for Winter 2098: the courses that you take in Tübingen can be language courses for international students or regular university courses. Various university courses outside the English Department are taught in English.

Tübingen credits can be used to satisfy degree requirements for a German major or minor.

For more information about the Tübingen program, go to: https://mcompass.umich.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=10248

There will be short presentations from four of our U-M faculty experts: Leonard Niehoff of the Law School will provide legal commentary on the case and issues of free speech/hate speech related to the case. Amy Stillman, Matthew Countryman, and Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes of American Culture will comment on efforts by targeted groups to reclaim derogatory/hate terms. Bethany Hughes of American Culture will provide commentary on how targeted groups, especially Native Americans, respond to the commercial use of "derogatory" terms.

Following the presentations, WeListen will lead a discussion session with all of the attendees sorted into groups.

Medieval Lunch. "Risk (Genoa, 1154)" & "No shoes allowed: Jewish Traditions between Spain and the Maghreb" (September 18, 2018 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/55373 55373-13722868@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 18, 2018 12:00pm
Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS)

Risk (Genoa, 1154)
The word "risk" entered the languages of western Europe in the mid-12th century. The Latin resicum first appeared in notarial archives in Genoa, and was used to describe a payment awarded to those who invested in dangerous trans-Mediterranean shipping. It comes from the Arabic word al-rizq, which in the Qur'an referred to the means of subsistence provided by God. In this presentation, we'll look at the very earliest attested uses of the Latin resicum and think together about how the word entered Latin, what it meant in these earliest contracts, and why the word and its cognates was embraced with such enthusiasm in the European languages.

No shoes allowed: Jewish Tradition between Spain and the Maghreb
Sephardi Jews living in the early modern Maghreb struggled to preserve their old traditions while adjusting to their new Islamic surrounding. This short talk will discuss a specific rabbinical answer from the mid-15th century, which tried to offer a general principle for Jewish cultural adaptability. More broadly, it will look at responsa literature as a fundamental source for the study of Mediterranean scholarly networks.

UMAC is a weekly communication group, hosted by the University Center for Language and Literacy (UCLL), and is open to anyone in the aphasia community. UMAC is a great way to meet other people with aphasia while boosting communication skills and confidence.

The group runs from September through November, but is split into monthly sessions. Each monthly session includes four group meetings.

Groups are run by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist who prepares activities for varying group sizes, skill levels, and topics. We emphasize functional communication that is useful for those of all communication levels and will provide you with new techniques to use long after the session ends.

This group is open to those of all communication skill levels. Aphasia can be incredibly isolating and takes a toll on confidence — this group takes aim at making connections and building confidence in speech and social interactions.

When the native language becomes unstable, and writers are forced to abandon it, or when experience simply destroys the transaction of meaning or truth between a writer and her language, the notion of the “place of writing” itself becomes destabilized and abstracted. This lecture probes the poet's relationship with an adopted language, acknowledging losses and gains, and offers a glimpse into the experience of writing in-between languages, hovering at the borders between them.

Whether you are writing a research article, proposal, conference abstract or dissertation, it is important to pay attention to style. Academic style is not so much a matter of following rules, but more a matter of making choices. Even if you are aware of the stylistic conventions of your field and of academic writing in general, you may also seek ways to more strongly position yourself and create your scholarly identity. In this workshop we will discuss some common features of academic style and how to make effective choices. Bring a text you are currently working on for analysis.

Organized By: Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies

The 2018 CMENAS Colloquium Series theme, “The Process of Discovery: How Scholars Write Books Today” will discuss how in popular media, writing is fantastically presented as a process whereby inspiration—a muse— comes to the writer (or fails to). In this fantasy, writers type fiendishly or crumple up one sheet after another. The reality is at once more complicated and humble than this. Come discover how scholars discover. The colloquium series will feature presentations from CMENAS faculty on their recent book projects and will explore the research process from start to finish.
------

Lecture Abstract:
People sure love to talk and write, ancients and moderns alike. But how can we know what people four thousand years ago were trying to do when they used language? We will look at various language questions raised by ancient Middle Eastern sources and discuss how modern linguistic, anthropological, and historical methodologies can bridge thousand-year gaps, so that we can communicate with women and men from long ago. And, just as importantly, how do we explain these methodologies to non-expert readers—how do you write a book about one topic, while simultaneously taking your readers into other fields that require different modes of thinking and evaluation? How do you address one audience while speaking the language of a different one?

Speaker Bio:
Jay Crisostomo is an Assyriologist, researching language and social and intellectual histories of the ancient Middle East. His book Translation as Scholarship: Language, Writing, and Bilingual Education in Ancient Babylonia will be published in early 2019. He is currently working on the linguistic and social history of the Sumerian language, one of the world’s earliest and most important recorded languages.

Writing is an emotional process and it works when it makes us feel, both as writers and readers. Yet a certain emotional distance is necessary when one writes poetry with the language of oppression, especially when one has been the victim, and offers a historical testimony. What kind of liberties can one take with the material? What constitutes appropriate artistic utterance when one navigate the territories of poetry about the hard truths? Rescuing words from screams of pain and anger into poetic expression, which shows the effect of oppression on the inner landscape of feeling, is what poetry offers as an art.

Lost in Translation: The Architecture and/of Chinese Edition (October 3, 2018 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/55224 55224-13700533@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 3, 2018 5:00pm
Location: Art and Architecture Building
Organized By: Graduate Rackham International

Have you ever wondered how architecture sounds in Chinese? Or questioned if the language of architecture would sound any more esoteric if it were in Chinese? Does linguistic difference matter? What is lost and what is gained when designspeak traverses the Chinese-English divide? How does the medium of design discourse affect its content? Is graphic communication the great equalizer? Is architecture sinicizable? Do you doubt that these are answerable questions? Find out on October 3rd, 5–7pm, at the Taubman College Commons.

In 1922, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein declared that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With the globally-connected community at the University of Michigan in mind, we invite you to an exploration of the cross-cultural academic expressive production that accompanies thinking and writing from a non-English background. Taking the University of Michigan as a case study, we hope to engage questions of scholarship and public expression incubated in the globalized environment that is the contemporary American university. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of English as a Second Language or as a lingua franca, we seek a discussion around scholarly expression in a multicultural, globalized academia.

Panelists:
FU Liangyu, Communications & Media Studies
WANG Jieqiong, Architecture & Urban Studies
William THOMSON, Anthropology & Architecture
ZHANG Fang, Fine Arts, Design, & Economics

Hors d'oeuvres to be served.
All are welcome!
No registration is required but please RSVP so we can provide enough food for everyone.

This event is organized by GRIN with generous support from Rackham and in partnership with Taubman College DEI.

Annika Pattenaude
About me:
I am 4th year PhD in L&L. I'm a California native, and I love to swim. I study medieval literature, and my dissertation examines (or will examine) the intersection of aesthetics and affect in late medieval poetry.

About my project:
This summer, under the mentorship of Hadji Bakara, I designed a literature course on human rights in the premodern world. To conduct this project, I compiled a bibliography of sources about rights in the classical, medieval, and early modern periods, and then organized select texts by theme: e.g., "Destabilizing the Human" and "Refugees, Exiles, and Aliens." Overall, a main goal of this course is to map a long history of human rights in order to discover how people made claims to or were restricted from rights in the premodern world.

Elinam Agbo
About me:
I am a second year MFA candidate (fiction) in the Helen Zell Writers' Program. I was born in Ghana and moved to the U.S. when I was ten. I grew up in Kansas, and I love Chicago (where I went to college).

About my project:
This summer, I wrote the first draft of a Young Adult novel, exploring black girlhood with a focus on my protagonist's relationship with her mother and her hair. The story was set in a surreal world where bureaucracy meets fairy tale characters, a world adjacent to ours but not quite ours. I shifted between two perspectives, one in prose and the other in verse, and I worked with my faculty mentor, Laura Kasischke, who is well versed in fiction and poetry.

Akosua Afiriyie-Hwedie (presentation via hand-out)
About me:
I'm a 2nd year MFA in poetry. I’m Zambian-Ghanaian and was raised in Botswana. My work is a journey in navigating home as a multitude of places and as more than just a physical space. Home can be many things, a mother, a language, a word etc.

About my project:
My mentor for the summer was Professor Ruth Behar (a cultural anthropologist who specializes in concepts of home, diaspora, displacement, immigration, travel, ethnographic research and methods specific to native anthropological research). With the help of Professor Behar and the Diversity Committee grant, I visited historic sites and interviewed people in both Ghana and Botswana. Thereafter, I produced a collection of poems which expound upon meanings of home (as physical space and beyond), particular to people indigenous to those spaces.

David Wade
About me:
I am a second-year MFA candidate in Fiction from the small rustbelt city of Washington, PA. My interests include hip hop, theology, mixed martial arts, and speculative fiction. My thesis is a collection of short stories about my hometown and the people who’ve never left.

About my project:
This summer, under the mentorship if Van Jordan, I worked on a poetry collection that examined the idea of “the wake” a as perpetual state of melancholy and subjugation unique to the African-American and global black experience found in Christina Sharpe’s monograph, In the Wake, among similar claims by other poets and scholars. The project seeks to challenge the narrative that the black experience is evenly transmuted across generation in perpetuity with no foreseeable expiration date.

Rackham Diversity Allies Program Spring/Summer Mentorship Grants
The Spring/Summer Mentorship Grants are for second, third, and fourth-year PhD L&L, JPEE, and E&WS students and first-year MFA students, and applications are due late in the Winter Semester.

Organized By: Department of Linguistics

Please join the Language and Rhetorical Studies Group for a dissertation chapter workshop with Alan Ke, a PhD candidate in Linguistics.

Chapter Description

The overall goal of this thesis is to advance our understanding of how humans comprehend language in real-time, developing and testing a new model of how mental representation of linguistic knowledge interacts with the memory system in sentence processing. To achieve this overall goal, I investigate an important theory that models the interaction between memory and sentence processing, known as cue-based memory retrieval theory, which assumes that a comprehender uses information as retrieval cues to identify meaningful language chunks with matching features in declarative memory. In this chapter, I review two main challenges of the cue-based retrieval theory, and briefly discuss the way this thesis addresses them. The last section of the chapter reviews the reason why such challenges are raised in the previous studies, as well as the solutions that have been previously proposed to address these challenges, and why these solutions are not satisfactory.

Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Department of Linguistics

The second event in the Department of Linguistics Fall 2018 Colloquium Series features a presentation by Jon Sprouse, Associate Professor of Linguistics, University of Connecticut.

ABSTRACT
Looking for evidence of A-movement

The evidence is almost overwhelming for a dependency in A'-constructions that can be captured with a grammatical operation like movement: there is a visible disruption in the word order of the sentence, there are several sentence processing effects associated with these disruptions, and there are abstract constraints these disruptions that vary cross-linguistically. In this talk, I'd like to ask whether we can find similar evidence for movement in A-constructions. I will spend the bulk of the time reporting three sets of studies that I have run in my own search for evidence of A-movement: a set of judgment studies on ne-cliticization in Italian and ECM in English; a set of EEG studies on uaccusatives, passives, and raising in English; and a set of hierarchical Bayesian models designed to test for the presence of UTAH during language acquisition (under the assumption that UTAH and A-movement are tightly coupled). In all three sets of studies, the results so far fail to present strong evidence for A-movement. After reviewing these results, my hope is to encourage some discussion about (i) what sorts of evidence we would expect to see if A-movement is part of the grammar, (ii) whether we might need cross-linguistic variation in the presence/absence of A-movement, and how the current evidence in the (syntactic, psycholinguistic, and neurolinguistic) literature stacks up against our expectations.

---
The 2018 CMENAS Colloquium Series theme, “The Process of Discovery: How Scholars Write Books Today” will discuss how in popular media, writing is fantastically presented as a process whereby inspiration—a muse— comes to the writer (or fails to). In this fantasy, writers type fiendishly or crumple up one sheet after another. The reality is at once more complicated and humble than this. Come discover how scholars discover. The colloquium series will feature presentations from CMENAS faculty on their recent book projects and will explore the research process from start to finish.
---

Lecture Abstract: This workshop will introduce fundamental research resources and strategies for Middle Eastern & North African Studies, broadly defined. Coverage will include an overview of important sources and bibliographic tools; methods of identifying, gathering and citing sources of various types; and approaches to negotiating practical issues (language, transliteration, naming conventions, dates, etc) when navigating bibliographic resources and the scholarly literature.

Speaker Bio:
Evyn Kropf is Librarian for Middle East Studies and Religious Studies and Curator of the Islamic Manuscripts Collection at the University of Michigan Library where she provides research, collection, and instructional support. A specialist of Islamic manuscript culture, her research interests include Islamic codicology with a focus on bookmaking (specifically writing material and structural repairs) and the use of pictograms and other visual content in Sufistic cultures of knowledge transmission.
