Making conversation can be one of the most challenging types of speaking to master in a second language. This can be particularly true with people in a position of authority, such as one’s research advisor, work supervisor, or future employer. In this workshop, we will explore conversation topics, turn-taking strategies, active listening, and sources for sample conversations. We will consider different types of conversations, such as seeming friendly and confident at a job interview or competent and insightful in a research group meeting. Come ready to practice with one another and to identify effective ways to practice on your own.

Universal histories - purporting to narrate all history from the Creation to now - were popular in the Middle Ages. One of the most widely disseminated universal histories - known as the "Histoire ancienne jusqu’à César" - was written in Flanders in French c.1210, but then circulated widely throughout the rest of the Middle Ages, particularly in Italy and the eastern Mediterranean, as well as in France, often in sumptuous illustrated copies. This lecture will focus upon the ideological freight of the "Histoire ancienne" being written and circulating in French in the light of the text’s own insistence on the value of being written ‘en nos lengue’. The analysis will draw on Jacques Derrida’s work on monolingualism and on the myth of a universal language, paying particular attention to the Histoire ancienne’s" account of Babel, to the different visual style of manuscripts from different places (the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, Italy and France), and to the narrator’s own repeated designation of the text’s language as ‘ours’. It will be argued that texts like the "Histoire ancienne" instantiate what might be called a ‘language network’ as opposed to the more familiar notions of a ‘language [or speech] community’ or indeed ‘textual community’.

The Department of Linguistics Winter 2019 Colloquium Series continues March 15 with a presentation by Linguistics Professor Colin Phillips of the University of Maryland. Professor Phillips is Director of the Maryland Language Science Center and Associate Director of the Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Program. He will present “The Relationship between Speaking and Understanding." Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome!

ABSTRACT
The Relationship between Speaking and Understanding

Language comprehension, language production, and grammatical analysis are typically pursued relatively independently of one another. We have long been interested in the relation between parsing and grammar, but have neglected mechanisms for production. If we cannot unify mechanisms for speaking and understanding, then unifying grammatical computation with either of them is likely fruitless. I will discuss the progress that we have made on understanding these issues.

Buddhist experiences can engage six senses: taste, touch, sight, sound, smell, and thought. In this evening presentation that ranges from incense to hand-stitched vestments to meditation, get a peek into the concepts and concerns that inspired the University of Michigan Museum of Art exhibition The Six Senses of Buddhism with Susan Dine, UMMA curatorial fellow 2017-18 and exhibition curator. In the spirit of experience, be ready for some hands-on interaction. The incorporation of incense may trigger the scent sensitive.

Susan Dine is a doctoral candidate in the University of Michigan's History of Art department. She served as a curatorial fellow at the University of Michigan Museum of Art in 2017-2018 and has been a research fellow at the Smithsonian's Freer | Sackler for this academic year (2018-2019). Her dissertation explores representations of language in medieval Buddhist visual culture of Japan.

We will have a mass meeting for all students, who will take language courses at a Goethe Institut this spring or summer.

We will have Goethe Institut alums from various sites present at this gathering.

I will speak for the first 15 minutes about the transfer of credits, which is important for all of you, and about MCompass, which is important for you and the university. I will also introduce a Google site to which you will have access and where you can fill in information and post photos for future students.

We will then break up into separate groups and separate rooms where Goethe Institut alums will talk about their experience and answer questions about course content, accommodation, early arrival, free time, other participants, transportation, travel, homework, class hours, costs, etc.

Above all, this meeting also gives you the opportunity to meet fellow participants in person. As you will have noticed, I already established a separate MBox site (Goethe Students 2019) for all Goethe students with the names of participants and with the regulations how the credits get transferred. Get in contact with fellow students: some of you may have already gotten to know each other via email or GroupMe. It would be ideal if you were to fly out to the Goethe Institut with fellow students--you may want to share your flight information with them.

Please bring a list of your own specific questions for the alums to this meeting.

State as a Producer: The Role of Institutions in the Italian Film Industry (March 25, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62386 62386-15361878@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 25, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Department of Film, Television, and Media

The post-war Italian cinema was organized as an industry or an artisan system? Did State intervention take place in terms of semi-authoritarian control or as a form of strategic support? Historians of Italian cinema have often debated about these questions and usually favored an interpretation of national film industry as a weak, politically-controlled system. The goal of this talk is to shed light on the role of the State in every phase of post-war film production, form training to funding, from the supply of production facilities to the management of film theaters. Case studies and archival materials will be presented in order to have a broader look on the entire value chain, taking account not only films and related quantitative data (box office, admissions, budget), but also the social and professional relations between the various players in the system.

Open-Book Translation Contest (March 25, 2019 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62245 62245-15335295@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 25, 2019 5:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

Students are invited to put their translation skills to the test by participating in the Seventh Annual University of Michigan German Department Open-Book Translation Contest! This contest will be judged by a panel of faculty members. The entries will be identified only by the student’s university ID number, making the judging anonymous. There will be monetary prizes of $150 for first place, $125 for second place, and $100 for third place!

Participants: All undergraduate University of Michigan students currently enrolled in a German course or who are registered as a German major or minor are welcome to participate.

Registration: All contest participants are required to register for the contest by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 25! To register contact Andrew Mills: ajmills@umich.edu.

Alternative times: If students can demonstrate that they cannot make the contest time due to their class schedule or work schedule constraints, an alternative time and location can be arranged. This alternative time must be arranged and confirmed before 5 p.m. on Monday, March 25, and must take place at some point during the day of Thursday, March 28.

Contest Rules: The contest will be held under the same conditions used by the American Translators Association (ATA) for its certification exam. Students will have approximately 70 minutes to translate a text by hand that will be provided for them. The translation will be from German to English. The contest will be held in “open book” format. Students will not have access to the internet, but may bring and use as many hardback or paperback dictionaries as they wish. All students receive the same text, which will be approximately 225-275 words in length. The contest must be written in (dark) pencil capable of being photo-copied for our judges. Students must bring their own pencils. Paper will be provided.

The text to be translated will be “general” in nature. This text expresses a view, sets forth an argument, or presents an idea or situation. Examples include: a newspaper article, an essay, or a passage from a non-fiction book. The contest passage is chosen in such a way as to avoid highly specialized terminology requiring research. There are, however, terminology challenges in the text, and knowledge of German culture, society, and history often is necessary for contestants to excel.

Challenge yourself! The worst that could happen is you discover how things stand with your translation skills. The best thing that could happen: you win some money!

Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

Have you ever wondered what the difference between a dialect and an accent is? Or how your voice can help or hurt you in the professional world? This workshop will answer those questions and more with an extended discussion led by experimental linguist Kelly Wright. Wright will give us a primer on speech perception-how it works and how we perceive people through their voice-and will share her research on dialect discrimination. She'll also offer some advice for how to celebrate your voice in the workplace. The workshop is part of the Celebrate Your Voice at Work campaign presented by the LSA Opportunity Hub, which provides a platform for students, alumni, and staff to share their stories and invites us all to ask the question: who defines what is professional?

This workshop is intended for undergraduate LSA students. We look forward to seeing you there!

Join LingoMatch for a night of art and presentations centered around the language experiences of people of color (POC). The event delves into how language barriers create challenges in POC communities and how these challenges are perceived, understood and interacted with by different language communities. We will display art created by local and student artists of color. In addition to discussing language barriers, the event will give artists an opportunity to discuss how language enriches their life, informs their artwork, as well as how it challenges the individual and community, especially regarding identity, bias, and prejudice. Captioning and English ASL interpretation will be provided at the event. Food will be provided!

UM RC Deutsches Theater presents Blaubart - Hoffnung der Frauen (April 6, 2019 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62646 62646-15416709@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, April 6, 2019 8:00pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

In this sometimes dark, sometimes hilarious play by contemporary German playwright Dea Loher, you’ll meet Heinrich Blaubart (Blaubart means Blue Beard), who bears some resemblance to Blue Beard from the French fairy tale by the same name, who kills his wives when they disobey him and enter the forbidden chamber of his castle. Like the original Blue Beard, Heinrich Blaubart brings death to women he meets. Unlike the original Blue Beard, though, he doesn’t seek to do so; in fact, his fear of relationships makes him try to avoid women. This, of course, makes him all the more attractive to the women he encounters. On a deeper level, the play suggests that everyone is searching for something different and for some acceptance. Perhaps one should take heed, though, of Maeterlinck’s warning that: “There is a Blue Beard room in everyone’s soul that should never be opened.”

Presented in German by students enrolled in RCHums334: From the Page to the Stage. Surtitles will make it possible for even non-German speakers to follow the action on stage. Directed by Janet Hegman Shier.

Saturday, April 6 at 8 PM and Sunday matinée, April 7 at 2 PM in the Keene Theater (lower level of East Quad).

We recommend a donation of $5 or non-perishable food items though no one will be turned away at the door. Proceeds go to SAFE HOUSE and Food Gatherers.

About RC Deutsches Theater: Since 1985, the focus of this RC course offering is on acting and on reading plays by contemporary German-speaking authors. We supertitle our plays. Audiences will note the resemblance to the way theater is performed in much of Europe with minimal (or sometimes no) set.

For over 30 years, the English Language Institute’s Conversation Circles have been bringing members of the U-M community together for English language practice and intercultural exchange. Conversation Circles are weekly hour-long meetings of international students and scholars led by volunteer facilitators who are current U-M students, faculty and staff.

Please join us for this Informational Open House to learn about the program, meet current and past facilitators and participants, and enjoy some ‘multicultural’ refreshments. Drop by anytime, stay as long as you like.

Leading a Conversation Circle is a great way to support international students and help build a more inclusive campus climate. It’s also a great way to hone your facilitating skills, learn about other countries and cultures, make friends, and have fun!

Speaking American English: A Communication Workshop for English Language Learners (June 6, 2019 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/63562 63562-15784184@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, June 6, 2019 3:30pm
Location: V. Vaughan
Organized By: University Center for Language and Literacy

Are you looking to increase confidence in your use of American English? The University Center for Language and Literacy (UCLL) at U-M offers a special workshop designed for non-native English speakers who want to expand their communication skills. Our program provides the perfect environment for you to reach your personal goals and we’re registering now!

Our certified Speech and Language Pathologists use techniques technically known as accent reduction to help non-native speakers feel more at home in their communications — whether that’s giving a presentation or taking notes in a class with a native speaker with a fast cadence. The goal of the program is certainly not to eliminate the accents of our clients, but to enhance communication skills for greater confidence in all settings. Participants will set their own individual objectives at the start of the workshop and will work to reach those goals using a combination of small group activities and one-on-one interaction, facilitated by a Speech and Language Pathologist.

The workshop will run from June 6 to August 15, 2019. Participants will meet weekly on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. The program cost is $275.00, plus the purchase of Mastering the American Accent by Lisa Mojsin.

If you have questions, need assistance, or want more information, please call (734) 764-8440 or visit https://mari.umich.edu/ucll

New at UMMA: Egon Schiele (June 29, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/63428 63428-15694147@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, June 29, 2019 11:00am
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Egon Schiele (1890-1918), one of the most well-known and controversial figures of Austrian Expressionism, made more than 3,000 works over the span of his short life and career. Working at the turn of the twentieth century, Schiele challenged the classical conventions of the day producing emotionally charged—often unsettling—drawings and watercolors depicting landscapes, portraits, and nudes. Two retired U-M professors recently gifted four works of art by Schiele to UMMA. Throughout their lifetimes, Frances McSparran (English language and literature) and the late Ernst Pulgram (Romance and classical linguistics) collected over forty Austrian and German Expressionist works, donating many of them to the Museum. The three watercolors and one drawing on view in this special installation complement the couple’s previous gifts of works by Schiele and his contemporaries Oskar Kokoschka, George Grosz, and Gustav Klimt, reuniting these important works that together provide important insights into this tumultuous period in European history.

Linguistics graduate student Hezao (Alan) Ke will defend his dissertation, "The syntax, semantics and processing of agreement and binding grammatical illusions," on Tuesday, July 16, at 10 a.m.

ABSTRACT
The overall goal of this dissertation is to establish a linking theory between the syntax and semantics and the processing of subject--verb agreement and reflexive binding. This dissertation develops a unified syntactic analysis of agreement, based on a formalization of minimal search. Such an analysis accounts for a variety of agreement patterns observed in various languages, including negative concord in Czech, inflection doubling in Norwegian, Frisian and Swedish, multiple agree in Japanese, cyclic agree in Georgian and Hindi Urdu, and subject-complementizer agreement in Lubukusu. The minimal search-based analysis is also extended to reflexive binding. The minimal search-based analysis of subject--verb agreement and reflexive binding captures the syntactic similarity between these two constructions.

This dissertation then argues that subject--verb agreement and reflexive binding have an important representational difference: the phi-features involved in subject--verb agreement and reflexive binding are essentially different in their semantic content. The phi-features on bound reflexives (and bound variables generally) have semantic content and are semantically interpretable, whereas those on agreeing verbs/T heads are not semantically interpretable.

The syntactic and semantic analyses of agreement and reflexive binding have crucial consequences for the sentence processing study of subject--agreement and reflexive binding. This dissertation proposes that the parser is less tolerant of mismatches of semantically interpretable retrieval cues (in reflexive binding) in cue-based retrieval, compared to those of phonological cues (in subject--verb agreement). Experimental results are provided to test how this asymmetry may underlie interesting dissociations with regard to grammatical illusions in subject--verb agreement and reflexive binding.

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Visitors entering Floyer’s installation Things (2009) in the Irving Stenn, Jr. Family Gallery encounter a collection of identical plinths that would ordinarily be used to display art objects in the Museum, but these platforms are empty. In place of visible objects, each plinth is equipped with a speaker from which we hear the word “thing” sung—edited out of and isolated from a range of pop songs. The result is an amusing and thoughtful exploration of language, meaning, and the conventions of museum presentation and spectatorship.

The installation, like much of Berlin-based artist Ceal Floyer’s art, is characteristically austere, but its visual simplicity masks a more complicated message—often a wry cerebral twist the artist creates through language-based symbols and aesthetic devices. Floyer’s work is rooted in conceptual art, in which the idea, delivered through words or acts that undercut or supersede formal qualities, is the essence of the artwork.

Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

The Deutschtisch for Summer 2019 is associated with German 230, but all are welcome! The group will meet MW 12:00-12:45. You can find the group with your ears (i.e. listen for a group of people speaking German). Look for the group:
EITHER: At Maizie's Kitchen in the Michigan League.

To be sure of the location, come to the end of class at 11:50 in 2106 MLB to walk to lunch with the group, or email the instructors to confirm the location: Shubhangi Dabak in the first half of the semester, Mary Gell in the second half of the semester.
