Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Visitors entering Floyer’s installation Things (2009) in the Irving Stenn, Jr. Family Gallery encounter a collection of identical plinths that would ordinarily be used to display art objects in the Museum, but these platforms are empty. In place of visible objects, each plinth is equipped with a speaker from which we hear the word “thing” sung—edited out of and isolated from a range of pop songs. The result is an amusing and thoughtful exploration of language, meaning, and the conventions of museum presentation and spectatorship.

The installation, like much of Berlin-based artist Ceal Floyer’s art, is characteristically austere, but its visual simplicity masks a more complicated message—often a wry cerebral twist the artist creates through language-based symbols and aesthetic devices. Floyer’s work is rooted in conceptual art, in which the idea, delivered through words or acts that undercut or supersede formal qualities, is the essence of the artwork.

Lead support  for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan College of Engineering and the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design, Institute for the Humanities, CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund, and School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Egon Schiele (1890-1918), one of the most well-known and controversial figures of Austrian Expressionism, made more than 3,000 works over the span of his short life and career. Working at the turn of the twentieth century, Schiele challenged the classical conventions of the day producing emotionally charged—often unsettling—drawings and watercolors depicting landscapes, portraits, and nudes. Two retired U-M professors recently gifted four works of art by Schiele to UMMA. Throughout their lifetimes, Frances McSparran (English language and literature) and the late Ernst Pulgram (Romance and classical linguistics) collected over forty Austrian and German Expressionist works, donating many of them to the Museum. The three watercolors and one drawing on view in this special installation complement the couple’s previous gifts of works by Schiele and his contemporaries Oskar Kokoschka, George Grosz, and Gustav Klimt, reuniting these important works that together provide important insights into this tumultuous period in European history.

Ceal Floyer: Things (August 31, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/63427 63427-15694100@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, August 31, 2019 11:00am

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Ceal Floyer: Things (September 7, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/63427 63427-15694106@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, September 7, 2019 11:00am

Franz Kafka in Central European Cultures of Memory (September 9, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/63005 63005-15534805@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 9, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Slavic Languages & Literatures

The presentation reconstructs the main strains of the reception of Franz Kafka within the historiography of literature in Central Europe and traces them to Central European cultures of memory. The lecture deals both with forgetting and functionalizing Franz Kafka in the memory of literature, as it occurred in Czech and German historiography of literature, as well as the obscuring and the focusing on details concerning his biography, networks, readings and text production during their way from the “storage” to the “functional memory”, as practiced within the paradigm of national historiography of literature. The lecture also focuses particularly on the invention of Franz Kafka as a “Czech” and/or Central European author in the Czechoslovakia of the 1960s and the transnational reinvention of Franz Kafka within the Central European context after 1989.

UMAC is offered once a week, Wednesday, for four-week sessions. The cost is $140 for the month (includes 4 weekly sessions). The meeting is facilitated by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist who prepares activities for groups of varying sizes and skill levels. Activities target all aspects of communication, including speaking, listening, and comprehending. You will practice speaking and interacting in a supportive and friendly environment, and learn new techniques to take home after the program ends!

You can fill out the UMAC online application. If you have additional questions, please call (734) 764-8440.

This group is open to those of all communication skill levels. Aphasia can be incredibly isolating and takes a toll on confidence — this group takes aim at making connections and building confidence in speech and social interactions.

Ceal Floyer: Things (September 12, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/63427 63427-15694110@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 12, 2019 11:00am

The syntax-semantics group provides a forum within which Linguistics students and faculty at UM, and from neighboring universities (thus far including EMU, MSU, Oakland University, Wayne State and UM-Flint) can informally present or just discuss and share their ongoing research in these domains. The group is frequently used by students to practice conference presentations and receive constructive feedback from "familiar faces."

Winter 2020 Term in Tübingen (September 15, 2019 12:59pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/63586 63586-15808566@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, September 15, 2019 12:59pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

Beat the cold Michigan winters and study abroad somewhere else next year. The Tübingen program, which is organized through the Center for Global and Intercultural Studies (CGIS), takes place in the Winter term, and it is intended for students who have completed at least German 221/231 by the end of the Fall 2019 term.

The German Department strongly recommends that you precede your stay in Tübingen by attending one or two four-week sessions at the Goethe Institut. This Goethe Institut segment is not part of the CGIS program itself. Please talk to one of German's academic advisors about the Goethe segment (germanadvising@umich.edu).

The CGIS portion in Tübingen will start early in March with a mandatory "Kompaktkurs" (6 credits) or a "Startkurs" (3 credits). While you will be enrolled for the Winter 2020 term at the University of Michigan, you will then take classes during "Sommersemester" at the Universität Tübingen (mid April - late July). You will earn 15-18 credits for Winter 2020: the courses that you take in Tübingen can be language courses for international students or regular university courses. Various university courses outside the English Department are taught in English.

Tübingen credits can be used to satisfy degree requirements for a German major or minor.

Please note that you must attend a First Step session in order to study abroad with CGIS. During the Winter term, First Step sessions are offered every Monday through Friday from 5-5:30 p.m. in Weiser Hall, Suite 200.

For more information about the Tübingen program and to apply, go to: https://mcompass.umich.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=10248

Ceal Floyer: Things (September 17, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/63427 63427-15694114@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 17, 2019 11:00am

The U-M Aphasia Community Group (UMAC) is a great way to meet people in the aphasia community, while boosting communication skills and confidence! If you or your loved one has the communication disorder aphasia, consider joining the conversation group. All ages are welcome.

Academic style is not so much a matter of following rules, but more a matter of making choices. Even if you are aware of the stylistic conventions of your field and of academic writing in general, you may also seek ways to more strongly position yourself and create your scholarly identity. In this workshop we will discuss some common features of academic style and how to make effective stylistic choices. Bring a text you are currently working on for analysis.

High Stakes Culture: The Power of the Pronoun (September 24, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65996 65996-16678397@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 24, 2019 5:30pm
Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Over the past few years, “culture wars” have been ignited across the country. Activists from all points of the political spectrum, even the President of the United States himself, are turning to beloved cultural objects to stake a claim for their differing beliefs in a politically fraught moment.

What is at stake in the ways we understand culture and cultural conflict? High Stakes Culture, a series presented by the Institute for the Humanities and the Humanities Collaboratory, brings humanities perspectives to bear on current debates.

The Power of the Pronoun:
The current debate over gender-neutral pronouns plays out on college campuses, on social media, and in offices across the country. Why are we thinking about pronouns in new ways? What are the politics and the history of the pronoun? And what do the conversations we are having about them reveal about American culture in this moment?

Come talk to humanities scholars who work on questions like these and others you might have about the power of the pronoun.

We are fascinated by what we fear. Misery appalls and magnetises. Creation means possibility but also beckons dissolution and catastrophe. Change – perhaps most radically projected as “conversion” – is at once an exhilarating and menacing prospect. When meanings are destabilised and predictabilities lost, experiences of opportunity and of awe jostle with feelings of anxiety and insignificance. Even love casts its shadows, turning what is intimate and familiar into the province of comfort but also dread. Revered ancestors become ghosts, dear neighbours witches. There is desire in absence, monster in treasure, chaos in awe.

A distinguished, international selection of scholars from across the humanities and social sciences gathers in Ann Arbor to explore the entwinement of horror and enchantment – amidst the intrusions and disturbances that characterised the medieval and early modern worlds – in an array of the post-colonial settings and cultural imaginations they helped to set in motion – and in a recognition of the fact that to investigate the coincidence of horror and enchantment in the past is also to inquire into ourselves, and into the volatilities and predicaments of our own times and places.

The U-M Aphasia Community Group (UMAC) is a great way to meet people in the aphasia community, while boosting communication skills and confidence! If you or your loved one has the communication disorder aphasia, consider joining the conversation group. All ages are welcome.

Location: V. Vaughan
Organized By: University Center for Language and Literacy

Are you looking to increase confidence in your use of American English? The University Center for Language and Literacy (UCLL) at U-M offers a special workshop designed for non-native English speakers who want to expand their communication skills. Our program provides the perfect environment for you to reach your personal goals and we’re registering now!

Our certified Speech and Language Pathologists use techniques technically known as accent reduction to help non-native speakers feel more at home in their communications — whether that’s giving a presentation or taking notes in a class with a native speaker with a fast cadence. The goal of the program is certainly not to eliminate the accents of our clients, but to enhance communication skills for greater confidence in all settings. Participants will set their own individual objectives at the start of the workshop and will work to reach those goals using a combination of small group activities and one-on-one interaction, facilitated by a Speech and Language Pathologist.

The workshop will run from October 16 to December 18, 2019. Participants will meet weekly on Wednesdays. The time is TBD. There will be no meeting on November 27. The program cost is $275.00, plus the purchase of Mastering the American Accent by Lisa Mojsin.

If you have questions, need assistance, or want more information, please call (734) 764-8440 or visit https://mari.umich.edu/ucll

What are the ways in which settler colonial and Indigenous ontologies structure perception, and listening in particular? This presentation provides an overview of forms of extractive or “hungry” perception, and alternatives to these that emerge from Indigenous sensory engagement. The range of such listening practices are necessarily multiple and dependent upon the specificities of Indigenous and settler epistemes at play, it is nonetheless possible to discern historical patterns of “civilizing” the attention of Indigenous people, and ongoing settler listening practices oriented toward the instrumentalization Indigenous knowledge. In contrast, forms of Indigenous listening resurgence refuse the anthropocentrism of listening, and instead proceed from intersubjective experience between listeners and song-life.

Dylan Robinson is a xwélméxw artist and writer (Stó:lō Nation, Sqwa), and the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Arts at Queen’s University. His current work focuses on the re-connection of Indigenous songs with communities who were prohibited by law to sing them as part of Canada’s Indian Act from 1882-1951. Robinson’s previous publications include the edited volumes Music and Modernity Among Indigenous Peoples of North America (2018); Arts of Engagement: Taking Aesthetic Action in and Beyond the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (2016); and Opera Indigene (2011). His monograph, Hungry Listening, is forthcoming with Minnesota University Press in early 2020. Additionally, Robinson is curator of the Ka’tarohkwi Festival of Indigenous Arts in Kingston, and along with Candice Hopkins, is curator of the internationally touring exhibition Soundings featuring “scores for decolonial action” by Indigenous artists.

Discrimination frequently occurs due to stereotypes about people's languages, dialects, and ways of speaking. Part of diversity is linguistic diversity and part of inclusivity is linguistic inclusivity. Discrimination frequently occurs due to stereotypes about people's languages, dialects, and ways of speaking. Efforts to include different languages in public spaces and to create a more inclusive public discourse are sometimes perceived as inappropriate policing of other people's language, even by people who generally support diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Linguistics Professors Natasha Abner and Robin Queen discuss ideas about language that can lead to discrimination, as well as the merits and the criticisms of inclusive language efforts, drawing from specific cases that have received national attention as well as significant attention on the University of Michigan campus.

The U-M Aphasia Community Group (UMAC) is a great way to meet people in the aphasia community, while boosting communication skills and confidence! If you or your loved one has the communication disorder aphasia, consider joining the conversation group. All ages are welcome.

Speaking American English (October 23, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/66521 66521-16744961@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 23, 2019 2:00pm

“‘In the Future, Robots will Speak Chickasaw’: Indigenous Language Futurism and the Temporalities of Language Reclamation” (October 23, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/66069 66069-16686689@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 23, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

The revitalization or reclamation of Indigenous and endangered languages is often driven or shaped by what Debenport (2015) calls ‘hopeful nostalgia,’ where if “read through the lens of nostalgia, language revitalization can be seen as both a symptom and a cure, a way to diagnose the amount of cultural loss and a way to reinstate what has gone missing, what has been taken, and what is seen to be vital to the health of the community." By definition then, language reclamation looks to the past in order to understand the present and to imagine radical linguistic futures. While the past is often privileged in discussions of language revitalization as an anchor of authenticity and cultural continuity, present day language use in revitalization contexts also utilizes comics, gaming, memes, and other creative and technological domains that position Native American languages as always simultaneously ‘once and future,’ quondam and futurus. In this talk, I consider the role of these Indigenous linguistic and cultural temporalities in understanding Indigenous language activism with particular interest in linguistic futurisms, or the imagining of Indigenous languages in Indigenous perspectives of the future.

Jenny L. Davis is a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where she is the director of the Native American and Indigenous Languages (NAIL) Lab and an affiliate faculty of American Indian Studies and Gender & Women’s Studies. She is the 2019-2021 Chancellor's Fellow of Indigenous Research & Ethics, and serves as the UIUC campus NAGPRA officer.

Yiddish In and Out of Context (October 29, 2019 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64966 64966-16499240@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 29, 2019 1:00pm

Organized By: Judaic Studies

Despite rumors of its demise, Yiddish continues to exert a powerful influence on Jewish culture and consciousness. Yiddish today performs a variety of new functions as a post- and trans-vernacular language in addition to its role as a language for daily communication. It is evoked, cited, and nostalgically remembered; it is used in art, music, theater, and literature; it is studied, theorized, spoken by enthusiasts, and admired by new generations who never spoke the language at home. In this symposium we explore Yiddish in both its traditional contexts and in these surprising new contexts. By considering Yiddish in and out context we hope to reach new understandings of how the role of Yiddish has changed and what these changes tell us about contemporary culture.

Symposium Schedule
Two panels that begin with the participants presenting their objects of analysis for around 10 minutes each, followed by a dialogue between all the panelists.
1:00 pm: First Panel with Eve Jochnowitz & Mikhail Kruitkov
3:00 pm: Second Panel with Justin Cammy, Sunny Yudkoff & Saul Zarrit

The front entrance of Rackham, located on East Washington, is accessible by stairs and ramp. There are elevators on both the east and wends ends of the lobby. The conference room is on the fourth floor. If you have a disability that requires an accommodation, contact the Judaic Studies office at judaicstudies@umich.edu or 734-763-9047.

UMAC is offered once a week, Wednesday, for four-week sessions. The cost is $140 for the month (includes 4 weekly sessions). The meeting is facilitated by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist who prepares activities for groups of varying sizes and skill levels.

Ghetto: The History of a Word (November 5, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64968 64968-16499242@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 5, 2019 4:00pm
Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Judaic Studies

Few words are as ideologically charged as "ghetto." Its early uses centered on two cities: Venice, the site of the first ghetto in Europe, established in 1516; and Rome, where the ghetto endured until 1870, decades after it had been dismantled elsewhere. Over the nineteenth century, as Jews were emancipated and ghettos were dissolved, the word "ghetto" transcended its Italian roots and became a more general term for pre-modern Jewish life. It also came to designate new Jewish spaces—from voluntary immigrant neighborhoods like New York’s Lower East Side to the holding pens of Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe—as dissimilar from the pre-emancipation European ghettos as they were from each other. After World War Two, ghetto broke free of its Jewish origins and became more typically associated with African Americans than with Jews. Chronicling this sinuous transatlantic journey, this talk reveals how the history of ghettos is tied up with the struggle and argument over the meaning of a word.

There is both an accessible elevator and gender-neutral restroom on the first and second floor. If you have a disability that requires an accommodation, contact the Judaic Studies office at judaicstudies@umich.edu or 734-763-9047.

Phondi is a discussion and research group for students and faculty at U-M and nearby universities who have interests in phonetics and phonology. We meet weekly during the academic year to present our research, discuss "hot" topics in the field, and practice upcoming conference or other presentations. We welcome anyone with interests in phonetics and phonology to join us.
