The Residential College 2020-2021 Robertson Memorial Lecture

Award-Winning Writer, Theodore Roethke Distinguished University Professor and RC Alumna, Laura Kasischke

"The News from Poetry: In an Era of False Facts and True Fallacies, What's to be Found in Art?”

March 3, 2021 via Zoom
4 - 5:30pm, with an online reception to follow
Register at https://myumi.ch/yKA8b

This talk will explore the ways in which art crosses borders and boundaries, both personal and global, erases political divisions to unite generations and cultures, to speak to all genders and races, to erase religious and economic divisions, while traveling eternally and generously (and for free!) from continent to continent, century to century, enduring through crises and chaos, disease and despair, to bring us the truths without which we will die.

Laura Kasischke is a graduate of the Residential College and is now proud to be an instructor of creative writing in it as well as in the English Department, where she is the Theodore Roethke Distinguished University Professor. She has published eleven collections of poetry, nine novels, a novella, and a collection of short stories. Her work has been translated into over a dozen languages, and three of her novels have been made into feature length films. The recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rilke Award for Poetry, and numerous teaching awards, Kasischke’s twelfth collection of poetry, Lightning Falls in Love, will be published in September.

Presented by the Residential College, celebrating 50 years of the Creative Writing & Literature Program

The Robertson Memorial Lecture is an annual Residential College event made possible by a gift honoring Professor James H. Robertson and Jean B. Robertson, the first Dean of the Residential College and his wife.

This event is free and open to the public.

A Taste of Frontier Medicine: The Kumys Cure in Sergei Aksakov’s Eastern Frontier Trilogy (March 4, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81936 81936-20990916@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 4, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Slavic Languages & Literatures

"A Taste of Frontier Medicine” considers Sergei Aksakov’s extensive, mid-nineteenth-century memoirs through the lens of a “frontier family narrative,” a genre perhaps more familiar in the American literary setting. While Aksakov’s work has received critical attention for its memoiristic content and attention to nature, the geohistorical specificity of the trilogy’s setting has been overlooked. This is surprising given the recent interest in understanding Russian colonial and imperial experience. A Family Chronicle (1856) and Childhood Years (1856) are not books in which the action could take place anywhere or in some generic pastoral or provincial space. Rather, they are about a specific place – Orenburgskii krai (Bashkiria) – that was a borderland, frontier, and contact zone from the time of its inclusion within Russian imperial space in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries into Aksakov’s lifetime. In “A Taste of Frontier Medicine,” I explore some of the ways in which the eastern Russian border with “Asia” broadly understood frames Aksakov’s work, as well as how these texts make claims about Russian identity as something defined by and in the “hybrid,” Eurasian sphere of the border zone. Discussion will center on two episodes that articulate a critical aspect of Aksakov’s frontier imaginary: the narrator’s mother’s taking of a “kumys cure.” The “kumys cure” serves as a revitalizing moment that establishes “nomadic,” “Asiatic” elements of the frontier as a crucial antidote to both a perceived excess of civilization and, counter-intuitively, to the potential dangers of the frontier zone itself.

Seminar coordinator: Marlon James Sales (U-M Postdoctoral Fellow in Critical Translation Studies)

Although Filipino migration has historically converged in other places across the US, it is in the Midwest, particularly at the University of Michigan, where some of the most extensive archival sources on this Southeast Asian nation can be found. These sources are generally used to examine US imperialism in Asia-Pacific, often glossing over the fact that the American period in the Philippines also led to the flourishing of Filipino literature in Spanish as a nationalist response. In this second installment of our Mellon-funded Sawyer Seminars, we shall analyze the archive as a site of translation and historical memory as a multilingual construct, focusing specifically on Hispanofilipino texts in the libraries of the University of Michigan and the broader Midwest. Translation here means two things. Since Spanish has never been spoken widely in the Philippines despite three centuries of colonial rule, translation may refer to the rendering of texts in another language supposedly understood by a majority of local readers. But given the limitations in how archival data is stored in the Philippines, translation may also refer to the movement of the archival sources themselves, whether physically or digitally, thus reclaiming them as objects of cultural memory. How has translation contributed to a monolingualized commemoration of multilingual pasts? What are the stakes of reconstructing a nation’s history through texts written in colonial languages? In which ways can translation help in recuperating a peripheral literary tradition in Spanish?

Do you study Russian and want more opportunities to develop your speaking skills in a welcoming and low-stakes environment? Are you looking for an opportunity to socialize with your peers and bond over the difficulties of learning a foreign language? Would you like to learn more about the culture of one of the most politically important and fascinating regions of the world with the coolest undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Michigan?

If the answer to any or all of the above questions is "yes", then you should check out the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures weekly Russian conversation club (called КРЯ - Клуб Русского Языка)! Regular attendance is not mandatory - you can drop in and out as you wish, and club participants are always willing to help each other out with questions about the language during our discussions. We meet in two groups, the first aimed at first-year students or any who are beginning their language study, and the second targeted towards students who have studied the language for at least a year. Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy Book Talk with Editors (April 12, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/83151 83151-21282830@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 12, 2021 10:00am

Organized By: Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies

Join us for a conversation with Asian American Studies Professors, Dr. Wei Ming Dariotis (San Francisco State University) and Dr. Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde (University of California, Davis), about their book Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy (Rutgers University Press, 2019). Moderated by Prof. Emily P. Lawsin (University of Michigan)

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Asian American women scholars experience shockingly low rates of tenure and promotion because of the particular ways they are marginalized by the intersectionalities of race and gender in academia. Although Asian American studies critics have long since debunked the model minority myth that constructs Asian Americans as the ideal academic subject, university administrators still treat Asian American women in academia as though they will simply show up and shut up. Consequently, because silent complicity is expected, power-holders will punish and oppress Asian American women severely when they question or critique the system. However, change is in the air. Fight the Tower is a continuation of the Fight the Tower movement, which supports women standing up for their rights to claim their earned place in academia and to work for positive change for all within academic institutions. The essays provide powerful portraits, reflections, and analyses of a population often rendered invisible by the lies that sustain intersectional injustices in order to operate an oppressive system. https://www.rutgersuniversitypress.org/fight-the-tower/9781978806368

Bios:
Dr. Kieu Linh Caroline Valverde is an associate professor of Asian American Studies and the founding director of the New Viet Nam Studies Initiative at the University of California, Davis. She is the author of Transnationalizing Viet Nam: Community, Culture, and Politics in the Diaspora, co-founder of the social justice movement, Fight the Tower, and co-editor of Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy.

Dr. Wei Ming Dariotis is a professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University. She is co-editor of War Baby/Love Child: Mixed Race Asian American Art and Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy, and co-author of the definition of critical mixed race studies.

CGIS Winter Advising (May 19, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83938 83938-21619171@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, May 19, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Global and Intercultural Study

As studying abroad becomes more of a possibility for U-M students, particularly for Winter 2022, CGIS will be offering a 2-day Winter Advising event where students can learn more about major-specific programs such as programs in the environment, pre-health, and public health and interest-specific program sessions such as studying abroad in the UK and English-Taught programs in Asia to name few. The LSA Scholarship Office and the Office of Financial Aid will join us on May 20th to help answer questions you may have on funding your semester program abroad as well as walking you through the application process! First Step sessions will be offered each day of the event as well. Each info session will be interactive. Each session will offer an opportunity to interact with advisors and address questions or concerns you may have regarding study abroad. To get a general idea of participation, please RSVP below and select info sessions that you'd be interested in. We'll send you a Zoom link as we get closer to the event!

DISCLAIMER: With each passing term, a small yet increasing number of our programs seem to offer the possibility of receiving students, so CGIS proceeded with very cautious optimism that students will be able to study abroad in the coming academic year. CGIS and the University of Michigan continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation as it develops worldwide. Parents and other concerned parties who would like to receive this information should ask their students to share the updates with them. Students planning to participate in CGIS programs worldwide are advised to continue to closely monitor the latest developments and to adhere to any national and international public health directives issued by their host country or institution. CGIS will contact students who have opened or submitted an application to a CGIS program if and when updates are available.

“Do you say ‘pop’ or ‘soda’ or ‘soft drink’? Do you know what a ‘Michigan left’ is? Did you know ‘Yooper’ is now in some standard dictionaries? Come hear about what is happening to English in Michigan and share the changes you’re hearing in the language.”

Presenter Anne Curzan, dean of LSA at University of Michigan is a trained linguist and studies the history of the English language. She describes herself as a fount of random linguistic information about how English got to be the way it is—information she shares every Sunday on the show “That’s What They Say” on Michigan Public Radio. She has also dedicated one major strand of her career to helping students and the broader public understand linguistic diversity as part of cultural diversity, and language change as a natural part of living languages.

Dr. Curzan has received university awards for outstanding research and undergraduate teaching, including the Henry Russel Award and the John Dewey Award. She is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and the Geneva Smitherman Collegiate Professor of English Language and Literature, Linguistics, and Education.

Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

On Friday, October 29, Mairym Lloréns Monteserín of the University of Southern California will present "Co-speech vocal tics produced by adults with Tourette syndrome are sensitive to prosodic structure."

ABSTRACT
Speech planning and production takes place in a body beset by urges. An urge to x is a sensation of discomfort that worsens until x is performed. It is common for talkers to experience urges to cough/yawn/etc. while they are speaking but very little is known about how these two fundamentally different modes of control over vocal behavior interact. My research is currently focused on understanding if and how urge-based systems that have the potential to wrest control over vocal-respiratory articulators are coordinated with co-occurring speech at different time-scales/levels of prosodic hierarchy. The vocal tics produced by adults living with the neurological condition Tourette syndrome provide a unique opportunity to investigate this topic because they occur frequently. Vocal tic noises, words and phrases are produced in order to satisfy an urge and they are completely unrelated to a ticcer-talker's linguistic and communicative goals. For my dissertation, I collected a corpus of acoustic recordings of adults performing a battery of speech tasks while ticcing freely, that is, while refraining from suppressing their own tics. By removing the need for active suppression, tic and speech motor systems are free to coordinate or compete in a naturalistic fashion. In this talk I will present an analysis of the relationship between prosodic structure and the timing of co-speech tic events. The distribution of tic events shows that tics are sensitive to prosodic structure at the level of intonational phrases (at least). I interpret these results to suggest that a higher-level task coordinates tic utterances with phrase boundaries. Implications for our understanding of speech planning in light of such “meta-prosody” are discussed.

The University Center for Language and Literacy is offering a Speaking American English workshop for Fall 2021. The Speaking American English workshop is designed to help you reach personal communication goals and offers a supportive environment to practice the language skills that are important to you.

The session will run for 10 weeks from September 10 to November 19, 2021. Participants will meet weekly on Fridays from 4-5 p.m.

Our certified Speech-Language Pathologists use techniques to help non-native English speakers feel more confident in their communications – whether that’s giving a presentation, or taking notes in a class with a native speaker who speaks fast. The goal of the program is not to eliminate a client’s accent, but to enhance communication skills for greater self-assurance in any setting.

Participants set their own individual goals at the start of the workshop and will work to achieve those goals using a combination of small group activities and one-on-one interaction. If the group workshop does not work with your schedule, please contact us; individual consultations are available.

What to Expect
* An initial meeting focusing on setting your personal goals and objectives.
* Both group and individual activities.
* Exercises for improving articulation, rate control, and projection.
* Increased confidence in social and professional interactions.
* Guidance from a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.

This interactive talk will offer a practitioner’s reflections on the making of a new translation of Adam Mickiewicz’s 1834 narrative poem *Pan Tadeusz*, widely referred to as “Poland’s national epic.” We’ll talk about the challenges presented, and the questions posed, by this particular act of translation, including those of imagined and actual readership; the role of aesthetic pleasure in the reading experience; and translation as trespass.

Bill Johnston’s rhyming verse translation of Adam Mickiewicz’s epic poem *Pan Tadeusz* (Archipelago Books, 2018) won the 2019 National Translation Award in Poetry and the 2019 AATSEEL Translation Prize. Johnston’s other awards include the Found in Translation Award for Tomasz Różycki’s mock epic poem *Twelve Stations* (Zephyr Press, 2015), as well as the PEN Translation Prize and the Best Translated Book Award, both for Wiesław Myśliwski’s novel *Stone Upon Stone* (Archipelago Books, 2010). He has also translated the work of Julia Fiedorczuk, Tadeusz Różewicz, Magdalena Tulli, Andrzej Stasiuk, and Jerzy Pilch, among others. He has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts (twice), the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 2014 he was awarded the Transatlantyk Prize for contributions to the promotion of Polish literature abroad. He teaches literary translation at Indiana University.

This week's topic is the historical phonology of Chinese loanwords in neighboring languages. The three presenters will be Gou Wu on Sino-Korean, Bill Baxter on Sino-Vietnamese, and Mathew Kramer on Sino-Japanese. They'll be showing how these are related to Middle Chinese (from which they were borrowed) and to Mandarin and Cantonese.

HistLing is devoted to discussions of language change. Group members include interested faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates from a wide variety of U-M departments -- Linguistics, Anthropology, Asian Languages and Cultures, Classics, Germanic Languages, Near Eastern Studies, Romance Languages, Slavic Languages - and from two nearby universities, Eastern Michigan (Ypsilanti) and Wayne State (Detroit).

Some meetings feature faculty or student presentations; other meetings have an announced topic for discussion and a volunteer moderator, but no formal presentation.

All meetings will be held virtually this semester. For more information, please email Sally Thomason (thomason@umich.edu).

Join us from 3-4:30 pm via zoom on October 1, 2021 for a virtual conversation with Karla Cornejo Villavicencio about translation and migration in her debut book of creative non-fiction, The Undocumented Americans.

To kick off the tenth annual Translate-a-thon at the University of Michigan, Professor William Stroebel will sit down and talk with Villavicencio about the roles, methods, and uses of translation lurking behind and inside the pages of her book: translation between languages, translation between dialects and registers, translation between spoken and written media, translation between genres of translation like interpretation in legal or journalistic settings and literary translation, along with her current attempts to translate the book into Spanish.

Her book breaks many things. It breaks boundaries between genres, mixing the rhythms of rock and the cadences of hip hop and the political anger of punk and the slow contemplation of lyric poetry into the burning advocacy of its prose reportage (along with a little dose of magical realism to boot). The book also breaks the mold of representation traditionally deployed by advocates and allies, who elevate the gifted DREAMers of DACA into poster children above a faceless, nameless mass of day-laborers, cleaners, construction workers, factory hands, deliverymen, dish washers and dog walkers.

These are the ones who take center stage in her book, and tell their stories as beautifully imperfect, hardworking, weird, and “just people,” sorting through the trauma of an oppressive system built and sustained by their exploitation and terrorization and invisibility. Villavicencio breaks through this invisibility and the taboos of representation and in doing so she calls upon its readers to break the system: “it’s time to fuck some shit up.” But amidst the great praise that this finalist for the National Book Award has won, very little has been said about another thing that her avant-gardism breaks: conventions of translation.

This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Comparative Literature and the Language Resource Center at the University of Michigan, with support from the 2021-22 Mellon Sawyer Seminar Series on Sites of Translation in the Multilingual Midwest.

We invite community members of all ages and languages to participate in the annual Translate-a-Thon at the University of Michigan on October 1-2, 2021.

A Translate-a-Thon is a short, intense, community-driven translation marathon, where volunteers interested in translation come together to translate materials for the benefit of our local, national, and international community.

Coordinated by the Language Resource Center and co-sponsored by the Department of Comparative Literature, our Translate-a-thon also promotes a sense of community among translators. We welcome current students and alums, faculty and staff, teachers and students from local high schools, prospective transfer students, professional translators and other interested parties.

This year we are celebrating ten years of the Translate-a-Thon, with a special theme on translation and migration. We kick off the weekend at 3pm on October 1 with a Virtual Conversation with Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, author of The Undocumented Americans. We will highlight translation projects for Freedom House Detroit, to support their mission of outreach to asylum seekers.

A range of other community translation projects will also be available to work on over the weekend, remotely or in person. Check out our Translation Gallery with more information for volunteers to translate work on projects in many languages!

We also welcome colleagues from other colleges and universities who would like to observe our activities in order to learn about organizing similar events at their own institutions. To follow up, we will host a workshop on “How to Run a Translate-a-Thon” (for further details contact complit.info@umich.edu).

Guest speaker Dr. Jonathan Henner (UNC Greensboro) will give a talk titled "Are there broken languages for broken people?"

ASL interpreters and CART captioning will be available.

ABSTRACT
Variationist sociolinguistics has examined linguistic variation based on geography, age, gender, and more recently race. The goal behind this field of linguistics is to support the notion that language variation is natural and good. Yet, even within variationist studies, there is still limited discussion on disability as a category for variation. The impact of disability on languaging is still often framed as atypical and deviant, with research focused either on identifying the deviancy (e.g. is it an SLI), or repairing it. From this perspective, that means not all variation is good. The purpose of this colloquium is to discuss the role of disability in language variation and to examine if variation caused by disability should be an acceptable facet of languaging.

About Jonathan Henner: My work thus far has taken three strands: a) I examine how different factors impact the development of language and cognitive skills in deaf and hard of hearing, b) I look at how to best assess and measure the language skills of deaf and hard of hearing populations, and c) I examine how frameworks that linguists and other scientists use contribute to ableist perspectives on language use

Iman Sheydaei Baghdadeh will give a talk titled "A diachronic analysis of Persian vowels: from Early New Persian to the three contemporary national dialects."

ABSTRACT

This presentation will take a trans-national-dialect approach to provide a diachronic account of the vowel systems in the three national varieties of Persian. This account will explain the development of Early New Persian (ca. 10th – 13th century) vowels into the vowels of Dari, Iranian Persian, and Tajik. In doing so, Oxford’s (2015) model of contrast and sound change and Avery and Idsardi’s (2001) phonological representation model have been adopted and combined to provide feature hierarchies at the dimension level for the vowels in the three national dialects of Persian.

Who is behind those words on the screen that make it possible for us to watch films from across the world, regardless of our native language? How do streaming platforms and film festivals get their subtitles? What is the world of professional subtitlers actually like?

Over a year ago, students at the University of Michigan co-founded the Flying Subtitles Collective because they loved making subtitles for new and classic films as a way to work on their language skills and gain experience in translation. Now, they are inviting Andrea Raianu of the lyuno-SDI Group, a leading studio for dubbing, subtitling and more, to talk about the behind-the-scenes work of professional subtitlers.

All are welcome to tune into this Zoom meeting! If you are interested in translation, films, and subtitles, join us, and bring your questions!

* Guidance from a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.

This month’s Togetherness event will be held virtually, over Zoom. Registrants can choose to pick up a hot meal the day of the event - quantity is limited.

The Togetherness: QTBIPOC Gatherings are a collaboration between MESA and the Spectrum Center focusing on centering the experiences of Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and Students of Color through sharing meals, discussions, and creating connections with people in the QTBIPOC community at UM and in the surrounding areas.

This event’s host will be Dominique Canning. Dominique (she/they) is a 6th year Ph.D. candidate in Linguistics with a focus on sociolinguistics and phonetics. Dominique identifies as aromantic asexual and agender, and is frequently conscious of how she and others use language to navigate through various social spaces as queer people. She has previously researched the conversation around asexuality as a queer identity, as well as the use of language in the construction of Titus Andromedon's identity as a Black gay man in the Netflix show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Her current research focuses on the use of language by queer Black people to construct and perform their identities as they move through the world.

The Linguistics Department welcomes Tracy Conner, Assistant Professor in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at Northwestern University. She will present "Investigating the Language of Gaslighting."

ABSTRACT
Gaslighting has been defined as “a type of psychological abuse aimed at making victims seem or feel ‘crazy,’ creating a ‘surreal’ interpersonal environment” (Sweet 2019:1). The concept has gained popularity in the public sphere through online articles and videos, though the bulk of the research on the topic has come from the field of Psychology, and Sociology only more recently. Though gaslighting can take many forms from action to inaction, one primary vehicle relates to a particular type of manipulative language use. In The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (1959), Goffman argues that in order to participate in face-to-face talk, we make inferences about what people mean in interactions (1959:2–3). Based on a Gricean paradigm, the inferences we make to attribute meaning to utterances are based on the assumption that our interlocutor’s intent is to be maximally cooperative (Grice, 1975). In gaslighting, we know that speakers are crucially not being cooperative, but this is generally only interpretable by the victim of the abuse. What makes gaslighting so difficult to identify, and what can linguistic tools help us uncover to lead us closer to understanding this phenomenon? I argue that in some forms of gaslighting, utterances appear cooperative and follow Gricean maxims through the exploitation of linguistic ambiguity and the difference between logical form and illocutionary force. Ultimately, the damaging effects for victims of gaslighting are rooted in issues of language and power.

This talk seeks to establish a unifying definition of gaslighting examining our notion of who we researchers deem experts in the discussion. Furthermore, the talk evaluates data collected through convenience sampling from online sources, emails, and audio recordings to identify the linguistic and pragmatic discursive strategies employed. I make the case that one salient pragmatic strategy in gaslighting is systematic and repetitive avoidance of the Question Under Discussion (QUD) which I define as topic shift. I make the case that topic shift contributes to why victims frequently feel “crazy” as accepting the new topic in conversation forces them to agree with realities that are not germane or true for them, and any attempt to reintroduce the original QUD makes the victim appear uncooperative.

This talk will be in Spanish.

The Linguistics Department welcomes Emily M. Bender, professor of Linguistics at the University of Washington and faculty director of the Professional Masters in Computational Linguistics (CLMS) program. Her research interests include the interaction of linguistics and NLP, computational semantics, multilingual NLP, and the societal impact of language technology. She will present "Meaning making with artificial interlocutors and risks of language technology."

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact lingadmin@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

ABSTRACT
Humans make sense of language in context, bringing to bear their own understanding of the world including their model of their interlocutor's understanding of the world. In this talk, I will explore various potential risks that arise when we as humans bring this sense-making capacity to interactions with artificial interlocutors. That is, I will ask what happens in conversations where one party has no (or extremely limited) access to meaning and all of the interpretative work rests with the other, and briefly explore what this entails for the design of language technology.

* Guidance from a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.

Coming to America: Translating Arabic Fiction in the Age of Global Liberation (November 11, 2021 4:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88348 88348-21653427@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 11, 2021 4:30pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Comparative Literature

Join Comparative Literature as we welcome Nancy Roberts, free-lance Arabic-to-English translator and editor on November 11th, 2021 @ 4:30pm in room 4310 of the Modern Languages Building.

Translators of literary works perform numerous functions simultaneously in relation to both a written work and its author. These functions include the linguistic, the cultural, the socio-political and the personal. Varied though they are, these functions might be summed up in the words “partner” and “mouthpiece.” After a brief detour into how her life trajectory led her to the field of Arabic-English translation, Nancy Roberts will relate her attempts to serve as “partner” and “mouthpiece” in the process of translating works originating in Palestine (Ibrahim Nasrallah’s Time of White Horses [زمن الخيول البيضاء], Lanterns of the King of Galilee [قناديل ملك الجليل] and Gaza Weddings [أعراس آمنة], and Ahlam Bsharat’s Codename: Butterfly [اسمي الحركي فراشة]) and Libya (Najwa Bin Shatwan’s, The Slave Yards [زرايب العبيد], and Ibrahim al-Koni’s The Night Will Have Its Say [كلمة الليل في حق النهار]).

Nancy Roberts is a free-lance Arabic-to-English translator and editor with experience in the areas of modern Arabic literature, politics and education; international development; Arab women’s economic and political empowerment; Islamic jurisprudence and theology; Islamist thought and movements; and interreligious dialogue. Literary translations include works by Ghada Samman, Ahlem Mostaghanemi, Naguib Mahjouz, Ibrahim Nasrallah, Ibrahim al-Koni, Salman al-Farsi, Laila Al Johani, and Haji Jabir, among others. Her translation of Ghada Samman’s Beirut ’75 won the 1994 Arkansas Arabic Translation Award; her rendition of Salwa Bakr's The Man From Bashmour (Cairo: AUC Press, 2007) was awarded a commendation in the 2008 Saif Ghobash-Banipal Prize for Translation, while her English translations of Ibrahim Nasrallah’s Gaza Weddings (Cairo: Hoopoe Press, 2017), Lanterns of the King of Galilee (AUC Press, 2015) and Time of White Horses (Cairo: Hoopoe Reprint, 2016) won her the 2018 Sheikh Hamad Prize for Translation and International Understanding. She is based in Wheaton, Illinois.

This event will be held IN PERSON.

Debates over the rise and fall of US empire continue to pervade headlines as well as academia. More recently, many scholars have come to recognize the history of capitalism as its own field of inquiry. In his book, Rotary International and the Selling of American Capitalism (HUP, 2021), Brendan Goff seeks to bring these two timely and evolving fields together through a close examination of the origins, growth, and expansion of Rotary clubs throughout the world during the first half of the twentieth century. When placed within the pre-war context of local and regional forms of boosterism, transnational business and social networks, civic and managerial discourses, and racialized and gendered forms of economic citizenship, local Rotary clubs proved to be anything but local, serving instead as nodal points for internationalist ambitions from towns and cities to nations and empires, from small businessmen to multi-national corporations.

That thousands of independent clubs operated worldwide through Rotary International, their administrative core based in Chicago, rather than through any formal arrangement with the US government, the US military, or its foreign policy elites proved invaluable in maintaining a strategic distance from the state. At the same time, what Goff calls Rotary’s civic internationalism promoted an idealized form of small-town, Main Street values that helped re-brand corporate capitalism as the central driver of progressive change in the world by mid- century. In this manner, Rotary International—a non-governmental organization—helped stabilize and advance both US national interests as well as US-based corporations and industries in a period of rapid global ascendancy.

Brendan Goff received his PhD in history at the University of Michigan in 2008. Before moving to New College of Florida in 2011 as a Visiting Assistant Professor, Dr. Goff held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies at the University of Michigan and was a lecturer in the Great Books Program at the University of Michigan. From 2014 to 2021, Dr. Goff also served as Assistant Professor at New College of Florida. Before entering the PhD program at Michigan, Dr. Goff worked as a freelance English teacher in Madrid, at a major bank in New York City, and in the Government and Community Affairs Division at the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington, DC. He also studied philosophy at the University of Glasgow as an Ambassadorial Scholar with Rotary International and attended seminary shortly after graduating from Hamilton College. Dr. Goff’s book, Rotary International and the Selling of American Capitalism, was published by Harvard University Press in July of 2021.

* Guidance from a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.

ABSTRACT
Critical knowledge about language and culture is an integral part of the quest for educational equity and empowerment, not only in PreK-12 but also in higher education. As Black students transition from high school to college, they seek to add their voices and perspectives to academic discourse and to the scholarly community in a way that is both advantageous and authentic.

The Talking College Project is a Black student and Black studies centered way to learn more about the particular linguistic choices of Black students while empowering them to be proud of their cultural and linguistic heritage. Black students took introductory educational linguistics courses that examined the role of language in the Black college experience and collected information from college students through both interviews and ethnography. We valued the perspectives of undergraduates from a range of disciplinary backgrounds as researchers, and we had a special focus on how our findings can immediately improve their own educational and linguistic experiences.

One key question of The Talking College Project was: how does the acquisition of different varieties of Black language and culture overlap with identity development, particularly intersectional racial identity development? To answer this question, we used a community-based participatory research methodology to conduct over 100 interviews with Black students at numerous Minority-Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges, and Predominantly White Universities across the U.S. We also conducted ethnographic research on over 10 college campuses. Based on information collected from the interviews and our ethnographies, it is evident that Black students often face linguistic bias and may need additional support and guidance as they navigate the linguistic terrain of higher education. In this presentation, I present themes and examples from the interviews that illustrate the linguistic pathways that students choose, largely without direct sociolinguistic support that could help guide their decisions.

To address the greater need to share information about Black language with students, I highlight our findings from interviews with Black students who have taken courses in educational linguistics to demonstrate the impact of education about Black language and culture on Black students’ academic opportunities and social lives. We have a focus on how this information particularly influenced those who went on to be educators. These findings serve to help us create an equity-based model of assessment for what educational linguistic information Black students need in order to be successful in higher education and how faculty can help to establish opportunities for students to access content about language, culture, and education within the college curriculum. I address the work we need to do as educators and linguists to provide more Black college students with information that both empowers them raciolinguistically AND respects their developing identity choices.

Location: Off Campus Location

U-M graduate student Natasha Vernooij (Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience) will present "Experimental Proposal: Bilingual Processing of Incongruent Codeswitches."

ABSTRACT
Bilinguals have a shared grammatical representation for constructions that follow the same word order in their two languages (congruent structures) (Hartsuiker & Pickering, 2008), and make language independent predictions for these constructions (de los Santos et al., 2019). There is also evidence that bilinguals have some sort of shared grammatical representation for constructions that do not follow the same word order in their two languages (incongruent structures) (Hsieh, 2017). However, it is unclear if all types of incongruent constructions have a shared mental representation, or if there is a limit on how different the word orders in the two languages can be to still have a shared representation. The proposed experiment investigates bilingual comprehension of incongruent codeswitched adjective/noun constructions in Spanish and English through the Stop Making Sense task (Mauner, Tanenhaus, & Carlson, 1995). Results will indicate what types of constructions have shared representations and to what extent bilinguals have a shared mental representation of their languages.

Bar bets, Scrabble fights, or the Dictionary Game: The dictionary has long been the answer, but the so-called “answer-for-everything” book has a long and surprising history we can explore through interactive exercises and discussion. The dictionary has also been a source of conflict over racial slurs, proper usage, spelling and related matters. Various dictionaries disagree on all these issues. To understand why, we will visit with dictionary creators Samuel Johnson and Daniel Webster, review the development of the ultimate dictionary (the OED), and see what happens when the dictionary goes online in contemporary times.

Instructor Alice Horning is retired from Oakland University where she taught linguistics and writing for more than 30 years.

This class meets on Mondays, from February 14 – March 7. No classes on holidays.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Janet G. van Hell, PhD, is Professor of Psychology and Linguistics at Pennsylvania State University, and co-director of the Center for Language Science. She will present "Understanding accented speech: the role of speaker identity and listener experience."

ABSTRACT
Current everyday communication is a cultural and linguistic melting pot. There are hundreds of millions of speakers of English as a second language in the world, so we are likely to encounter speakers who have a non-native accent when speaking English. We are also likely to interact with people from different backgrounds, whose accent may be similar or different from one’s own accent. Research has shown that non-native accented speech can challenge language comprehension. Although behavioral studies indicate that listeners adapt quickly to non-native accented speech, neurocognitive studies have shown distinct neural mechanisms in processing non-native accented sentences relative to native accented sentences. I will present a series of recent behavioral and EEG/ERP experiments in which we examined how speaker identity and listener experience affect the comprehension of non-native accented and native accented sentences. More specifically, we studied how listeners’ experience with non-native accented speech modulates accented speech comprehension by testing different groups of listeners (young and older adult monolinguals with little experience with non-native accented speech, listeners immersed in non-native accented speech, and bilingual (non-native accented) listeners). We also examined how faces cuing the speaker’s ethnicity (e.g., Asian face) create language expectations (here, Chinese-accented English), and how these biases impact the neural and cognitive mechanisms associated with the comprehension of American- and Chinese-accented English sentences. Implications of the findings will be discussed by integrating neuropsychological theories of language comprehension with linguistic theories on the role of socio-indexical cues in speech comprehension.
