Larry Hogan is the 62nd governor of Maryland and chairman of the National Governors Association. Recently reelected in a landslide, he is only the second Republican governor in Maryland history to win a second term. Known for his practical solutions, his stark transparency and his ability to work across party lines, he is also a proud survivor of late-stage non-Hodgins lymphoma. His wife, Yumi Hogan, is the first Korean-American first lady in America. The Hogans live in the historic state capital of Annapolis.

Keeping employees engaged is a necessary part of leading a team. In the absence of face-to-face interactions, leaders of virtual teams must leverage new strategies to encourage broad participation, sharing of ideas and effective collaboration. Liberating Structures (LS) activities are simple, subtle and powerful tools designed to promote interactions that are inclusive, focused and productive. In this session, participants will experience two of the most widely used Liberating Structures tools which require no special equipment and can be used virtually in your next team meeting.

AUDIENCE:

*Note: This event is also listed in the graduate student welcome calendar. Both listings are the same event and the inclusion in the graduate student calendar was to explicitly encourage non-undergrad students to come as we will be featuring some orgs solely for grad / professional students.*

Did you know there's nearly 20 different LGBTQ+ organizations active at the University of Michigan? Now, we can't have a panel with all of them, but we can introduce you to a few of them! Join representatives from five of these orgs to talk about their purpose, vision, and goals, and also to learn about what it's like to lead as an LGBTQ+ person at this university. We'll share how to connect with all the other orgs as well, so you can easily find your people. Come meet your community with us!

There's many reasons why someone would want to be a mentor - you remember an older student or professor giving you guidance through undergrad, you've learned a lot and want to pass it on, you had a hard time and want to make sure younger students don't have to deal with what you did - but what makes a good mentor? What skills do you need, how do you make the relationship beneficial to both you and the mentee? What if you mess something up? Mentorship can be an exciting and terrifying prospect, but we're here to give you some tips.

We've brought together a panel of experienced LGBTQ+ staff and faculty who participate as mentors in our MaPPS (Mentoring and Personal/Professional Support) program to talk about what they've learned about being a good influence and building trust with a mentee. Afterwards, ask the panelists questions and consider signing up for our GPS (Guidance - Perspective - Support) program, our peer-to-peer mentorship opportunity, and start using those skills today!

Who Do We Choose To Be? Facing Reality, Claiming Leadership, and Restoring Sanity by Margaret Wheatley (September 22, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/75542 75542-19519141@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

The focus of this class is the title book by Meg Wheatley. It offers wisdom that motivates and inspires us to local action on important issues. Some of the central questions raised by the book are: what does it take to lead an “island of sanity” and is it possible to create protection from the wild irrationality raging about us? The book refers to “warrior leaders in local spaces, offering best service wherever opportunities present themselves.” Know that this is heavy material and that each session will begin with a short mindfulness meditation.

Author Meg Wheatley has been illuminating issues of living and leadership for over 40 years. Instructor Bernadette Beach has created and offers professional development for nurses. She has also presented mindfulness courses and training for 20 years. Instructor Barbara Cherem has been creating curricula and teaching in the educational leadership program at UM-Flint for 15 years. She has been an educational leader for several decades.

The study group will be held on Tuesdays from September 22 through October 20. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.”

Virtual panel discussion

The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About the Panel:
As the global pandemic drags on and people around the world struggle to find a “new normal,” so many of us find illness, disease, and loss piling on top of natural disasters, financial ruin, and the long-term suffering wrought by systemic racism and injustice. While we feel called to rise to the moment, it’s no wonder that many of us begin to feel hopeless or helpless to do so. This event is designed to renew our capacity to imagine and enact compassion in the face of the widespread suffering we find all around us.

Join us for an exploration of a science-based view of compassion that meets this moment. We bring together a number of experts who study compassion in organizations with practitioners who are leading for compassion now. Each of our panelists will feed our imagination with stories and fuel our capacity for action with small, actionable strategies that you can use right now. Focused on building our capacity for action, this unique panel structure will leave you with a replenished toolkit full of small moves that will help you find ways to rise to the challenges of leading, learning, and teaching with compassion now.

Jocelyn Benson is Michigan’s 43rd Secretary of State. In this role she is focused on ensuring elections are secure and accessible, and dramatically improving customer experiences for all who interact with our offices. Benson is the author of State Secretaries of State: Guardians of the Democratic Process, the first major book on the role of the secretary of state in enforcing election and campaign finance laws. A graduate of Harvard Law School and expert on civil rights law, education law and election law, Benson served as dean of Wayne State University Law School in Detroit. She continues to serve as vice chair of the advisory board for the Levin Center at Wayne Law, which she founded with former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin. Previously, Benson was an associate professor and associate director of Wayne Law’s Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights.

Frank LaRose took office as Ohio's 51st Secretary of State on January 14th, 2019. Prior to being elected to statewide office, he served two terms in the State Senate representing the 27th Senate District in northeast Ohio. As Ohio’s Secretary of State, LaRose is doing his part to deliver a thriving democracy and a prosperous economy. In his role as Ohio’s chief elections officer, he’s working to ensure Ohio’s elections are secure, accurate and accessible. He is also supporting Ohio entrepreneurs as the sole authority to receive and approve articles of incorporation for Ohio businesses. Among numerous recognitions, LaRose was named the Legislator of the Year in 2016 by the Ohio Association of Election Officials in recognition of his support and commitment to improving Ohio’s election process. LaRose, a native of northeast Ohio, graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Consumer Affairs and Business.

Jenna Bednar is a professor of political science at the University of Michigan, the Edie N Goldenberg Endowed Director for the Michigan in Washington Program, and a member of the external faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. The Lasting Impact of Covid-19 -- Mitigating the Impact of COVID-19 on Underserved Communities: Lessons Learned from Flint and Implications for Reducing Health Disparities Beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic (October 20, 2020 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/75655 75655-19552875@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 20, 2020 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

This event is free and available to the public. OLLI membership is not required.

There have been tremendous racial, ethnic, economic, and geographic disparities in COVID-19 cases and outcomes. There are multiple causes of health disparities that pre-dated COVID-19 that have been amplified during the pandemic. We have learned multiple lessons in Flint to better understand the sources of health disparities and strategies to prevent and reduce the inequitable impact of COVID-19 on socially vulnerable communities. These lessons provide valuable insights on longer-term strategies to address health inequities beyond COVID-19.

Our two speakers will discuss these lessons and more:

Debra Furr-Holden, Ph.D., is the Associate Dean for Public Health Integration and Director of the Flint Center for Health Equity Solutions and MSU Co-Director of the Healthy Flint Research Coordinating Center.

She is an epidemiologist and classically trained public health professional with expertise in drug and alcohol dependence epidemiology, psychiatric epidemiology, and prevention science. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Sciences and Public Health from Johns Hopkins University Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and a PhD in Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Lawrence Reynolds, M.D., a pediatrician for 41 years, has been deeply involved in health and health advocacy, especially for underserved parts of the Flint community, for most of his career.

He was president and CEO of the Mott Children’s Health Center, a board member of the Hamilton Family Health Network, president of the Genesee County Medical Society, and many other initiatives. During the Flint water crisis, he was a member of then-Gov. Rick Snyder’s Flint Water Advisory Task Force and the Flint Water Interagency Coordinating Committee. He is also the newly appointed health advisor to the City of Flint Mayor and is an at-large director of the Greater Flint Health Coalition.

He is a graduate of Howard University College of Medicine and a National Health Service Corps Scholarship recipient.

With so much change taking place in our organization, employees are struggling to adapt and are looking for support from their leaders. This has led to a realization that we need to help employees develop their resilience. Leaders first need to help build resilience within themselves, then their team by implementing resilience techniques. Military Healthcare has had a strong relationship with civilian health care for many years. They say that “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Overtime military research and innovations have been adopted into civilian medicine. For the last 8 months our national health system has been dealing with the challenges of COVID-19. Unlike a “normal” mass casualty event, the COVID-19 pandemic poses unique challenges to the health system and to the execution of health care. As a military veteran I was able to use and apply many lessons learned and leadership concepts from my military background to my experience at Swedish Edmonds Hospital.

This presentation will cover topics such as: Planning, Training, Human Factors, Concept of Mission Command, Logistics and Personnel.
Additional topics will be discussed as time allows.

Envisioning an Anti-Racist World Creative Challenge: Information Session (November 9, 2020 12:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79096 79096-20207878@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 9, 2020 12:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Arts Initiative

How do you imagine a vision for an Anti-Racist World (campus, community, neighborhood, city, state, country), that truly embodies the ideals of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice for the future? In line with the work many members of the University’s community have been doing, and that has come into sharp focus in recent months with calls for action throughout the country and world, the Envisioning an Anti-Racist World Creative Challenge invites students to imagine a future world–and a future campus– that is anti-racist. We invite undergraduate and graduate students to research and share ideas while contributing to probing conversations and sharing experiences about racial inequality and the complex history of white supremacy as a process of imagining the world we want to build at UM.

Students can join as individuals then form interdisciplinary teams through the challenge process to take on the semester-long challenge taking place Winter 2021. Taking forward the core DEI values of the University and its community, teams will design the future, asking:

How would you envision the world you want to build?
What issue do you want to resolve?
What societal impact do you want to make?

About the Event:
Creating a strong purpose is essential to wellbeing in our lives and our organizations during times of uncertainty. With an authentic purpose, individuals and organizations become more resilient, creative, and engaged with their work and the world around them. And employees realize a greater sense of meaning and empowerment.

Join us for a conversation with Vic Strecher hosted by Robert E. Quinn to learn more about the science and practice of building purposeful, thriving organizations. Together, they’ll explore the current scientific research illustrating the positive impact an authentic and well-communicated purpose can have on individuals, teams, and organizations, as well as some keys to help you unlock your own potential.

About Strecher:
Victor J. Strecher (pronounced Streker), PhD, MPH is a visionary leader and expert in the fields of behavior change, digital communication, and wellbeing. His pioneering research led to successful ventures, reaching millions of lives. He’s Founder & CEO of Kumanu, a next generation wellbeing company, Professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, renowned speaker, and author.

In 1995, Vic founded the U-M Center for Health Communications Research, studying the future of digitally-tailored health communications when fewer than 15% of Americans had Internet access. In 1997, he founded HealthMedia, a digital health coaching company that was sold to Johnson & Johnson in 2010. More recently, Vic created Kumanu (Maori for “nourish” and “cherish”), a digital platform designed to help individuals and organizations live more purposefully.

Vic and the organizations he founded have won numerous national and international awards, including two Smithsonian Awards, the Health Evolution Partners Innovations in Healthcare Award, the National Business Coalition on Health’s Mercury Award, and the Health Enhancement Research Organization’s (HERO) Mark Dundon Research Award. In 2010, Vic won the University of Michigan’s Distinguished Innovator Award. In late 2017, Dr. Strecher was the Donald A. Dunstan Foundation’s “Thinker in Residence” in Adelaide, Australia to develop a “Purpose Economy” of business, government, and communities. His 2009 TedMed presentation has been cited by MPHonline as one of the “Top 10 Ted Talks on Public Health.”

His latest neuroscience, behavioral, and epidemiologic research; his two books, Life On Purpose and the graphic novel On Purpose; his free massive open online course Finding Purpose and Meaning in Life, which in its first six months has over 75,000 enrollees; and the Purposeful application his business (Kumanu) created are all focused on the importance of developing and maintaining a transcending purpose in life.

About Quinn:
Robert E. Quinn’s life mission is to inspire positive change. He does this as a faculty member, author, consultant, and speaker. He is a professor emeritus at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and one of the co-founders of the Center for Positive Organizations.

As an author he has published 18 books. His best-selling volume, Deep Change, has been used across the world. His book, The Best Teacher in You, won the Ben Franklin Award designating it the best book in education for 2015. The Harvard Business Review has selected his paper, “Moments of Greatness: Entering the Fundamental State of Leadership,” as one of their 10 Must Reads on Managing Yourself.

As a consultant he has 35 years of experience and is best known for the competing values framework, a tool that has been used by tens of thousands of managers. What would you do with an idea and $10,000?

The Capstone Experience at the Barger Leadership Institute (BLI) supports undergraduate students in designing and implementing evidence-based, collaborative projects that seek to bring about small (and big) wins for the complex, ambiguous problems that exist in our deeply interconnected world.

Join the BLI to learn more about Capstone Experience and meet like-minded students with ideas and skills to collaborate with. Teams, individuals, or those just interested in learning more are all welcome — you do not have to be a current BLI member to participate in this info session.

Whether your project is still an idea or an existing project that has approached a hurdle or is considering growth, the BLI Capstone Experience will provide teams with the funding — a minimum of $10,000 — and mentorship necessary to make your vision a reality.

Amariyanna "Mari" Copeny, also known as Little Miss Flint, is a youth activist from Flint, Michigan. She is best known for raising awareness about Flint's ongoing water crisis and fundraising to support underprivileged children in her community and across the country. Mari is currently 13 years old. At the age of 8 she wrote a letter to President Barack Obama challenging him to visit Flint to see the crisis firsthand. The letter was published in the Los Angeles Times and confronted the entire country with the reality faced by victims of state negligence.

Positive Links Speaker Series (January 25, 2021 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/80480 80480-20728304@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, January 25, 2021 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Ross Center for Positive Organizations

The way we communicate matters because it has consequences. When it is done well, communication creates human contact, enables a person to discover solutions, builds people up, deepens their relationships, and serves as a source of inspiration and influence. And although all of us communicate every day at work and at home, we often fall short of our own best aspirations. Most often, it is because we may not know how.

This session is an introduction to the art of positive communication. It is based on the premise that the “spoken word, spoken honorably and well, can make a difference that no other form of communication can equal.” In it, you will learn six critical behaviors that will improve your capacity for connecting with others, help you foster high-quality relationships, and lead others positively.

Framed by powerful stories and a practical model of communication you can use today, the session will invite you to transform your own communication and thereby create your own best moments as a person and a leader.

In our dynamic world, the pursuit of health equity is both valiant and never complete. Generations of public health leaders have devoted themselves to the ultimate goal of a healthier, more equitable world for all. Bringing contemporary leaders to share their insights, vision, and perseverance is the principle of Ahead of the Curve, a new speaker series from the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

A fourth-generation physician whose paternal grandparents fled Germany in the early 1930s to build a new life in Mexico, Julio Frenk catalyzed his deep gratitude for the kindness of strangers into a lifelong mission to improve the health, education, and well-being of people around the world. Dr. Frenk currently serves as president of the University of Miami. He began his presidency in August of 2015 following nearly seven years as dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Dr. Frenk has an extensive professional record spanning three decades and a career that has included leadership positions in all relevant aspects of public health and higher education: research, teaching, analysis of public policies, institution-building, international cooperation, and national public service.

What would you do with an idea and $15,000?

The Capstone Experience at the Barger Leadership Institute (BLI) supports undergraduate students in designing and implementing evidence-based, collaborative projects that seek to bring about small (and big) wins for the complex, ambiguous problems that exist in our deeply interconnected world.

Join program manager Fatema Haque at this info session where she will outline the program and answer all of your questions! Teams, individuals, or those just interested in learning more are all welcome — you do not have to be a current BLI member to participate in this info session.

Whether your project is still an idea or an existing project that has approached a hurdle or is considering growth, the BLI Capstone Experience will provide teams with the funding — $15,000 — and mentorship necessary to make your vision a reality.

What’s in a number? In the case of the U.S. Social Security number, the now-familiar nine digits hold a fascinating story about modern citizenship, governance and data. Starting in 1936, the SSN was affixed to more and more American lives, spurring new uses of punch cards and filing systems as well as novel dilemmas about personal data. This talk gives a brief history of the SSN and what it reveals about the changing state of “our” information.

The Farm Stand is weekly pop-up market and education project that sells produce grown by students for students. The project is a collaboration between the UM Sustainable Food Program (UMSFP) and the Campus Farm. Hopefully, the Farm Stand will safely re-open in the summer of 2021. Join us as we plan educational partnerships for the Farm Stand's future.

UM Sustainable Food Program working groups serve as a creative, free-thinking space where the needs and wishes directly from students can be realized, by students. There are three “themed” working groups: Campus Farm Stand, DEI, and Campus Collaboration. These themes serve as spaces where students are able to meet and collaborate with other people from different majors, interests, and backgrounds to brainstorm about what sustainable food justice and practices should look like at the university and surrounding communities. Working Group meeting times vary by semester. The Farm Stand Working Group meets bi-weekly on Thursdays from 3-4pm. Questions? Email bfrom@umich.edu.

In the last twenty years, the phrase "talent management" has increased dramatically in organizations and management literature. Despite its prevalence, little research has looked at potential consequences of referring to employees and their abilities as "talent."

Join us for a conversation with Angela Duckworth and Daniel Southwick, hosted by Kim Cameron, to learn how organizational language can impact employee grit. They will discuss their recent research showing that describing ability as a talent (as opposed to a skill) is linked to pessimistic attitudes about improvement and persistence and may lead human resource managers to invest fewer resources in employee development. In this session you will learn what leaders can say and do to unleash grit in the workplace.

Angela Duckworth is the founder and CEO of Character Lab, whose mission is to advance scientific insights that help children thrive. She is also the Rosa Lee and Egbert Chang Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, faculty co-director of the Penn-Wharton Behavior Change For Good Initiative, and faculty co-director of Wharton People Analytics. Previously, Angela founded a summer school for underserved children that was profiled as a Harvard Kennedy School case study and, in 2018, celebrated its 25th anniversary. She has also been a McKinsey management consultant and a public school math and science teacher. Her book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance is a #1 New York Times best seller. She is also co-host, with Stephen Dubner, of the podcast No Stupid Questions.

Daniel Southwick is a doctoral student, studying under Dr. Angela Duckworth, in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on practice, expertise, and people's perceptions of talent. He is particularly interested in understanding the mindsets that facilitate optimal learning. He has a Masters of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the University of California at Irvine.

Host: Kim Cameron, co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizations; William Russell Kelly Professor Emeritus of Business Administration; Professor Emeritus of Higher Education

Series Sponsors: The Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center, Tauber Institute for Global Operations, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, Lisa and David (MBA ‘87) Drews, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2020-21 Positive Links Speaker Series.
