This exhibit explores the poets who have been both shaped by Ann Arbor’s literary culture and active in shaping that culture, beginning with Robert Frost and ending with poets who still walk and write among us.

Though most people associate him with New England, Robert Frost spent several years in Ann Arbor in the 1920s, serving as the University of Michigan’s poet in residence. In the decades that followed, U-M offered teaching positions to scores of remarkable poets, including winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the MacArthur Award, and the Nobel Prize in Literature. A partial roll call would include such names as W. H. Auden, Robert Hayden, Joseph Brodsky, Czeslaw Milosz, Alice Fulton, and Anne Carson. A number of other major poets—Theodore Roethke, Frank O’Hara, X. J. Kennedy, Jane Kenyon—studied at the university. And in 1978, Donald Hall founded the University of Michigan Press’s Poets on Poetry series—the most notable series of its kind in the country, and now boasting 115 titles (https://www.press.umich.edu/browse/series/UM31).

Exhibit curated by Sigrid Anderson Cordell, U-M Library, and Cody Walker, U-M Department of English.

The Library has been in collecting mode almost non-stop since it opened in 1923, and many unusual or extraordinary objects have found a home within its walls. The four Clements Library curators have each contributed to this exhibit a selection of interesting, remarkable, or peculiar items. As we celebrate the return of the Clements collection to 909 South University Avenue, we invite you to peruse a few of the oddball items that have turned up in a great library.

Wikimedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming absence in an important repository of shared knowledge. Let’s change that.

SAVING THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE: THE LEGACY OF THE LIBRARY OF ALEXANDRIA (March 16, 2017 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/38827 38827-7429330@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 16, 2017 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Francesca Schironi, Associate Professor of Classics at UM, has worked extensively on Aristarchus of Samothrace (the most important Alexandrian scholar), publishing a collection of his fragments and articles on him and Hellenistic scholarship. She also published an edition with commentary of a papyrus lexicon, a monograph on book-conventions in papyri, and articles on modern reception of the classics. Her new book on Aristarchus’ work on the Iliad is forthcoming with UM press.

The lecture will focus on the Library of Alexandria and its legacy, in ancient times and for us. Prof. Schironi will explain how and why it was founded and discuss a few examples of the work carried out by intellectuals during the Library’s golden age. Alexandrian scholars saved masterpieces of Greek literature for us, but their legacy goes far beyond that, and it reminds us why libraries are important and why we should care about them.

This is the fourth of a six-lecture series. The subject is The Library – Civilization’s Treasure House of Knowledge. The next lecture in the series will be March 23. The Subject is DISCOVERING RADICAL HISTORY IN THE JOSEPH A. LABADIE COLLECTION

Join us for a fascinating exploration of spiritism and spirit photographs. U-M Professor Deirdre de la Cruz speaks about her research regarding early twentieth-century spirit photographs in the Philippines and elsewhere, and her use of Clark Library resources.

Dr. de la Cruz will explore the tension between Spiritism as a philosophy and practice that traveled via historically specific colonial routes and were localized to particular political and cultural contexts, and Spiritism as a global occult movement founded precisely on the promise of transcending metaphysical and spatial boundaries. For her study, Professor de la Cruz used the resources of the Clark Library and will detail their role in her research and teaching.

Dr. Ebony Elizabeth Thomas, University of Pennsylvania, is conducting empirical, digital, and archival research for a pedagogical monograph about traumatic historical events such as slavery and the teaching of literature to children. Her talk focuses on her research process for this work, which is ongoing, and is an extension of her National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation postdoctoral research project.

While atrocity in general will be considered, her work deals with the specific context of US enslavement, how it is represented in children’s stories, and what the resultant implications are for schooling and society.

Emergent Research events are aimed at better understanding the various types of research undertaken across campus, particularly as they relate to library services and support, opportunities for collaboration, data management and preservation, and beyond.

Josie Parker received her MLS from UM in 1996. After working as a children’s librarian and youth department manager in Chelsea and later in Ypsilanti, she came to AADL in 1999. She has been Director since 2002. She serves as a Commissioner on the Michigan Commission for the Blind and the State Library for the Blind in Michigan. She speaks on public library matters to a broad array of groups around the world, but she is happiest speaking to the Ann Arbor community about its public library.

Ms. Parker will talk about the treasure that is the Ann Arbor District Library, its mission, challenges, and stories about its founding and special collections. She will relate why our library, unlike most public libraries, is tied to the school district, rather than the municipal government. She will also describe the important role that a Scottish immigrant played in the intellectual life of our country. She will describe some of the joys and challenges in public libraries of today and in the future.

This is the last of a six-lecture series. The subject is The Library – Civilization’s Treasure House of Knowledge. The next lecture series will start April 6, 2017.

LRCCS Lecture | History, Law, and Censorship in Digital China (April 3, 2017 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/40141 40141-8481149@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 3, 2017 11:00am

Digitization has radically increased the accessibility of many forms of data and has opened up exciting new avenues of scholarly research. Censorship seldom ranks highly among the ethical and methodological considerations prompted by this growing abundance. But for scholars working on contemporary China, particularly its legal system, censorship remains a cardinal problem.

This talk strikes a cautionary note about the risks of our deepening digital dependence. Combining both traditional close reading and computational tools, the talk will document and analyze the omission of hundreds of articles from leading Chinese online academic journal databases, offering a case study on how the digital turn has enabled China to quietly export its domestic censorship regime abroad, with Orwellian ramifications for how scholars around the globe comprehend its past, present, and future.

Dr. Tiffert is the LRCCS Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow in Residence and teaches in the History and the Asian Languages and Cultures departments at the University of Michigan.

When the University of Michigan was founded in 1817 it was located in the capitol of a raw frontier territory that was yet twenty years away from achieving statehood. Much of the Michigan Territory was still in the hands of several Native American nations. Euro-American settlement was found only in the Southeast and at the Straits of Mackinac. The proper surveying of Michigan would not begin for another year. And, only five years earlier, Detroit and Mackinac had been captured and occupied by the British during the War of 1812. Establishing an institution of higher learning in this rough territory was a gamble indeed.

Brian Leigh Dunnigan, Curator of Maps at the University of Michigan's William L. Clements Library, will present a talk describing what Michigan was like when the U-M first opened its doors to scholars. Using images of original maps, art, architecture, and letters from the amazing collections of the Clements Library, he will transport you back to the Michigan of 200 years ago.

Alison Macrina talks about how the Library Freedom Project is fighting surveillance and making digital privacy tools mainstream and ubiquitous through the trusted space of the library, followed by a Q/A session. Macrina is a librarian, internet activist, the founder and director of the Library Freedom Project, and a core contributor to The Tor Project.

How can librarians protect our fundamental values of intellectual freedom and privacy in an era when political dissidents, religious minorities, immigrants and other marginalized people's rights are seriously threatened? How can we do this given the monumental powers of state surveillance and Big Data? Library Freedom Project brings together the expertise of librarians, hackers, attorneys and activists to create practical privacy trainings for people at any level of technical ability.

We will build railroad lines around the world, travel the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon, hunt for Carmen Sandiego, explore the solar system, and build hotels on Boardwalk. If you have your own favorite map game, feel free to bring it along.

Daniel Eisenberg, professor at the U-M School of Public Health, provides an overview of research in the Healthy Minds Network, a growing national initiative to collect and disseminate data and evidence related to college student mental health. He will address questions such as: Are mental health concerns increasing in college populations? What are the greatest needs in this area? What are the best opportunities to improve student mental health?

Eisenberg is a health economist and professor at U-M. His goal is to improve understanding of how to invest effectively in the mental health of young people, particularly college age populations. He directs the Healthy Minds Network, which conducts a national survey of student mental health and develops digital media interventions.

Emergent Research events are aimed at better understanding the various types of research undertaken across campus, particularly as they relate to library services and support, opportunities for collaboration, data management and preservation, and beyond.

The 62nd annual meeting of the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM), May 20-24, will be a forum to discuss how librarians’ and faculty’s teaching practice can build a bridge between library collections, students and each other. For program, registration and local information, please visit the conference website at http://salalm.org/Conf

Within the context of this conference, the term teaching will be interpreted broadly as a practice that is not constrained to the classroom, but can be manifested in our work in archives, exhibits, the reference desk, and collaborative and mentoring relationships.

Because learning is an active endeavor and best achieved through firsthand practice, SALALM LXII will feature hands-on workshops led by invited guests alongside regular conference panels.
