Daniel Eisenberg, professor at the U-M School of Public Health, provides an overview of research in the Healthy Minds Network, a growing national initiative to collect and disseminate data and evidence related to college student mental health. He will address questions such as: Are mental health concerns increasing in college populations? What are the greatest needs in this area? What are the best opportunities to improve student mental health?

Eisenberg is a health economist and professor at U-M. His goal is to improve understanding of how to invest effectively in the mental health of young people, particularly college age populations. He directs the Healthy Minds Network, which conducts a national survey of student mental health and develops digital media interventions.

Emergent Research events are aimed at better understanding the various types of research undertaken across campus, particularly as they relate to library services and support, opportunities for collaboration, data management and preservation, and beyond.

The 62nd annual meeting of the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM), May 20-24, will be a forum to discuss how librarians’ and faculty’s teaching practice can build a bridge between library collections, students and each other. For program, registration and local information, please visit the conference website at http://salalm.org/Conf

Within the context of this conference, the term teaching will be interpreted broadly as a practice that is not constrained to the classroom, but can be manifested in our work in archives, exhibits, the reference desk, and collaborative and mentoring relationships.

Because learning is an active endeavor and best achieved through firsthand practice, SALALM LXII will feature hands-on workshops led by invited guests alongside regular conference panels.

A radical student is adopted by a group of young New Yorkers, which serves as a catalyst to alter his and their lives. Gathering in a Manhattan apartment, the group of friends meet to discuss social mobility, Fourier’s socialism and play bridge in their cocoon of upper-class society – until they are joined by a man with a critical view of their way of life.

The movie was distributed by Ira Deutchman’s New Line Cinema and was directed by Whit Stillman; both will be onsite to discuss the film after the screening!

IRA DEUTCHMAN SYMPOSIUM SELECTION. Ann (ANDIE MACDOWELL) is trapped in a sexually and emotionally unfulfilled relationship with her husband, John (PETER GALLAGHER), a successful but unpleasant lawyer who is sleeping with her sister, Cynthia (LAURA SAN GIACOMO). The underlying tensions in the couple’s marriage rise to the surface when Graham (JAMES SPADER), a friend of John’s from college who’s been drifting for nine years, returns to town and videotapes Cynthia and Ann as they talk about their sexual desires. Writer/director STEVEN SODERBERGH won the CANNES FILM FESTIVAL PALME D’OR for this, his first feature film.

The film's producer/distributor, Ira Deutchman, will lead a post-film discussion.

As the University of Michigan celebrates its bicentennial this year, Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA, is preparing to celebrate the 2018 centennial of its Theater Department, one of the oldest such departments in the country, which was co-founded by U-M alumna Ellen Van Volkenburg and her then-husband Maurcie Browne. Mark Bocek, Media Specialist for Cornish College of the Arts, has been on a multi-year research journey to uncover the history of the Theater Department, which led him to the University of Michigan's Special Collections Library, home to the Ellen Van Volkenburg and Maurice Browne Papers.

This talk will focus on Van Volkenburg and the remarkable skills she brought to Cornish in 1918, the excitement and glamour her new department brought to the school, and what its creation did to galvanize Cornish’s academic programs. Playing an important role is the intellectual history of Cornish, whose central tenets found their way from Michigan to Seattle via Nellie Cornish’s mentor and former Michigan professor of music, Calvin Brainerd Cady, a colleague of John Dewey’s in the 1880s. Finally, Van Volkenburg and Cornish were two extraordinary women of signature similarities and differences, over-sized personalities who became lifelong friends. Ellen Van Volkenburg and Calvin Cady—the Michigan connection—helped Nellie Cornish create an educational institution the like of which the world had never seen and of a type that is rare even today.

As more people keep private, sensitive, or research information in online accounts, the importance of keeping these accounts secure has become more important. In this hands-on session, we show how to perform a threat assessment of your online accounts and information, how to secure your personal accounts by creating and managing strong passwords, and how to further secure your logins by using 2-Factor authentication tools.

You will learn how to evaluate the risks and considerations of securing your online accounts and information through the use of threat modeling. You’ll also explore methods to secure your accounts by creating a diceware passphrase. Finally, you’ll see a demonstration of a password manager, and learn how to further secure your logins with the 2-Factor authentication tool, Duo Push.

This session is led by staff of the University Library’s Connected Scholarship team, accompanied by information security experts from U-M’s Information and Technology Services and LSA’s Information Technology team.
