Join us for a morning of presentations and conversations on current research projects happening throughout the University Library. As those invested in the production and preservation of knowledge, we work with a variety of research methods, including investigation, evaluation, experimentation, and careful study. Often, these projects take us beyond the day-to-day aspects of our jobs, encouraging us to solve unique problems and discover new possibilities.

Emergent Research events are aimed at better understanding the various types of research undertaken across campus, particularly as they relate to library services and support, opportunities for collaboration, data management and preservation, and beyond.

This workshop from Justin Bonfiglio of the U-M Library Copyright Office serves as both an introduction and a deeper dive into resources like Cornell's Copyright Term and the Public Domain in the United States, the US Copyright Office's Online Catalog, and the Catalog of Copyright Entries. There are many good copyright resources available online, but some of them can be challenging to navigate. What is the US copyright term for a work published today? Can you find a copyright renewal record for Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle? How about a copyright registration?

Please register via TeachTech (http://ttc.iss.lsa.umich.edu/ttc/sessions/resources-on-copyright/) or by contacting Justin at jbonfig@umich.edu.

The 1967 Detroit rebellion was a pivotal event in the history of the Motor City. While Ann Arbor may seem far removed from Detroit, the themes of 1967—housing segregation, media bias, student activism, and police violence—resonated here as well.

This exhibit, on display in the Hatcher Graduate Library North lobby through September 15, 2017, highlights the extensive archival resources of the Bentley Historical Library and the U-M Library’s Labadie Collection. These materials place the rebellion in the context of 1960s activism against racism and inequality in Detroit and Ann Arbor, and illustrate the significance and range of press coverage.

Reforming the Word: Martin Luther in Context (September 5, 2017 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/42280 42280-9593313@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 5, 2017 8:30am

Highlighting manuscripts and early printed books from the Special Collections Library, the exhibit commemorates the 500th anniversary of a pivotal transformation in world history. In 1517, Martin Luther, a professor of theology and a monk, published his scathing critique of indulgences, a church practice that allowed Christians to buy off time from suffering for one’s sins in the afterlife.

Issued in the provincial town of Wittenberg, Luther's call for academic debate and reform unleashed a series of events that led to the break-up of Latin Christianity. The Reformations that followed forever altered the lives of those in early modern Europe and beyond.

The late medieval German lands teemed with innovation. Novel forms of piety emerged, the demand for practical learning grew, more universities competed for students, and wealth from both trade and mining transformed social relations. The dissemination of texts and ideas on an industrial scale via the printing press reshaped communication, knowledge, and belief. In this context, reform—the renewal of a lost standard of the past in the present—became a battle-cry for religious, economic, and political change.

Nuclear weapons are an undeniable reality of our times. Nagasaki Atomic History and the Present (NAHP) is an educational website that seeks to have American students be able to imagine and realize what the effects of a nuclear weapon are/were/would be on people. NAHP is the result of over six years of small-group collaborations between students, atomic bombing survivors, citizens, NGOs, librarians, audio-visual technicians, professors, and universities around the world.

In this talk, Aleksandr Sklyar highlights the post-production work that followed the original filming of the video interviews with atomic bombing survivors in Nagasaki in summer 2010. This talk will be of interest to students and faculty conceiving public digital scholarship projects. It will give you a chance to reflect and prepare for the steps involved in preparing a final product after you have completed the collection of raw audiovisual material.

Aleksandr Sklyar is a Ph.D. candidate in Sociocultural Anthropology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Alex is also one of the creators of NAHP. Alex’s doctoral work looks at family decisions following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. He writes about food, home, material and social pollution, everyday nuclear worlds, and the permeation of the abnormal into the everyday.

A sweeping saga told in the voice of an unforgettable heroine, "The Belle of Two Arbors" brings two places vividly to life: a growing “downstate” town driven by a public university striving for greatness, and a small “up north” community seeking prosperity while preserving its natural heritage. Spanning the first half of the twentieth century, Belle’s remarkable story is interweaved with accounts of historical events as well as memorable appearances by some of our favorite poets, including Emily Dickinson, W. H. Auden, and Robert Frost.

Paul Dimond will talk about his experience conducting research for his first novel at the Ann Arbor District Library, the Bentley Historical Library, and the Special Collections Library in the University of Michigan’s University Library. He will be accompanied by Martha (Marty) Buhr Grimes, who wrote the poems that are Belle’s in the novel.

Paul and Marty are lifelong Ann Arbor residents who share a passion for poetry, their hometown, and Lake Michigan.

This lecture will formally introduce the exhibition "Reforming the Word: Martin Luther in Context." In 1517, Martin Luther, a professor of theology and a monk, published his scathing critique of indulgences, a church practice that allowed Christians to buy off time from suffering for one’s sins in the afterlife. Issued in the provincial town of Wittenberg, this call for academic debate and reform unleashed a series of events that led to the break-up of Latin Christianity. The Reformations that followed forever altered the lives of those in early modern Europe and beyond. Highlighting University of Michigan’s Special Collections, Reforming the Word: Martin Luther in Context, commemorates this pivotal transformation in world history.

During the Depression, the Federal Writers' Project (FWP) dispatched writers to sample the fare at group eating events like church dinners, political barbecues, and clambakes. Its America Eats project sought nothing less than to sample, and report upon, the tremendous range of foods eaten across the United States.
Dr. Camille Bégin shapes a cultural and sensory history of New Deal-era eating from the FWP archives, describing in mouth-watering detail how Americans tasted their food. Bégin explores how likes and dislikes, cravings and disgust operated within local sensory economies that she culls from the FWP's vivid descriptions, visual cues, culinary expectations, recipes and accounts of restaurant meals. She also illustrates how nostalgia, prescriptive gender ideals, and racial stereotypes shaped how the FWP was able to frame regional food cultures as "American."
