The story of the Tulsa Massacre (1821) has become a symbol of what has been erased in the telling of American history. Scott Ellsworth, a native of Tulsa, stumbled upon an article about the “race riot” as a 12-year old when a librarian was demonstrating a new technology—microfilm. He turned to that subject for his undergraduate history thesis at Reed College in Oregon and then the book “Death in a Promised Land” (1992). His book was considered the first-ever comprehensive history of the horrific 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

With “The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice”, Professor Ellsworth returns to the subject of Tulsa. Described as “riveting and essential,” The Ground Breaking not only recounts the long-suppressed story of the notorious Tulsa race massacre, it also unearths the lost history of how the massacre was covered up and the courageous individuals who fought to keep the story alive. Most importantly, it recounts the ongoing archaeological search for the unmarked graves of the victims of the massacre and of the fight to win restitution for the survivors and their families.

Both a forgotten chronicle from the nation’s past and a story ripped from today’s headlines, The Ground Breaking is a page-turning reflection on how we, as Americans, must wrestle with the parts of our history that have been buried for far too long. The New York Times described The Ground Breaking as “A skillful narrative of excavating the truth about the Tulsa race massacre. . .Candid and self-aware. . . Part of what makes this book so riveting is Ellsworth’s skillful narration, his impeccable sense for when to reveal a piece of information and when to hold something back.” The book was long-listed for the National Book Award, the Carnegie Medal from the American Library Association and recently was named as one of the Best Books of 2021 by Publishers Weekly.

Dr. Scott Ellsworth is a faculty member in the University of Michigan’s Department of Afro-American and African Studies. He teaches courses on African American history, Southern literature, race and sports, and crime and justice in contemporary U.S. society. Trained as a historian, he received his BA from Reed College and his MA and PhD from Duke University.

Formerly a historian with the Smithsonian Institution, he has written about American history for the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times, and has appeared on National Public Radio, the TODAY Show, PBS’s The American Experience, the History Channel, the BBC, and in both film and broadcast documentaries. His book, “The Secret Game”, won a 2016 PEN Book Award, and was named by the Chicago Tribune as one of the Top Ten Books of the Year.

When it comes to backing up the data on our computers, phones, and tablets, many of us have thought, "Is that something I should be doing?" While the answer is definitely YES, setting it up can be confusing and feel daunting.
Hard drives vs. "The Cloud." Apple Time Machine, Windows File History, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, Apple iCloud (where is that cloud located anyway?). In this study group, Jim Keen will explore the reasons for and common methods of backing up your data, so you'll be able to decide what is best for your own situation.
Jim Keen holds a BA (communications) and an MA (educational studies) from the University of Michigan. He currently owns and operates Keen Focus Technology Tutoring. This study group will meet Tuesday February 1.
Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Shakespeare's "Richard III" paints a detailed portrait of a ruthless villain. We will take a deep dive into the play, its contexts, and performance. No outside reading is required: we will split a reading of the play over the five weeks we meet: each week we will begin by reading one act of the play and then spend the rest of the session in discussion.
Active participation will be encouraged, but if you are more of a listener, you can still join in the discussion without taking on an "acting" role. Any edition of the text is fine.
This study group will meet Friday beginning February 4. Instructor Margo Kolenda-Mason is a PhD candidate in English Language and Literature at U-M, where she studies medieval and renaissance literature.

Bar bets, Scrabble fights, or the Dictionary Game: The dictionary has long been the answer, but the so-called “answer-for-everything” book has a long and surprising history we can explore through interactive exercises and discussion. The dictionary has also been a source of conflict over racial slurs, proper usage, spelling and related matters. Various dictionaries disagree on all these issues. To understand why, we will visit with dictionary creators Samuel Johnson and Daniel Webster, review the development of the ultimate dictionary (the OED), and see what happens when the dictionary goes online in contemporary times.

Public sector water infrastructure in high income countries (HICs) is primarily centralized, where resources serving large segments of a community’s population flow in and out of a single hub. The future, however, requires more flexible and sustainable approaches. This presentation will review the history of water infrastructure, the consequences of that history on the quality of water services, and options for the future both in HICs as well as low and middle income countries

Our speaker, Nancy G. Love, PhD, PE, BCEE, is the Borchardt and Glysson Collegiate Professor and JoAnn Silverstein Distinguished University Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University Michigan.

Along with her students and collaborators, Dr. Love works at the interface of water quality, infrastructure and public health in both domestic and global settings. Dr. Love emphasizes practical applications and real-world impact with her research and teaching. She is a licensed professional engineer (PE) in the state of Michigan and a Board Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEE).

This Study Group explores Shakespeare's use of magic in his plays by focusing on "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Macbeth" and "The Tempest". OLLI Study Group Leader Robert Lamphear guides the examination of the supernatural in Shakespeare's work with these plays as a framework for discussion.
Students will better understand Shakespeare's occult investigations through his plays and their appeal to his audiences, then and now. Both novices and scholars of Shakespeare are welcome. This study group will meet Wednesdays beginning March 2 through March 23.
Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.
