Cheikh Lô is one of the great mavericks of African music. A superb singer and songwriter as well as a distinctive guitarist, percussionist and drummer he has personalised and distilled a variety of influences from West and Central Africa, to create a style that is uniquely his own. Incorporating Senegalese mbalax with elements of salsa, Zairian/Congolese rhumba, folk, and jazz, Lô has created an infectious, hook-laden style of pop music. Born in 1955, to Senegalese parents in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, not far from the border with Mali, where he grew up speaking Bambara (language of Mali), Wolof (language of Senegal) and French. At 21 he started singing and playing percussion with Orchestra Volta Jazz in Bobo Dioulasso, and spent much of the 1980s working as a session musician in both Dakar, Senegal and Paris, France, while also developing his own repertoire. In 1995, Youssou N’Dour helped to produce his second solo record, and signature sound – a semi acoustic, Spanish-tinged take on the popular mbalax style – was an instant success in Senegal, gaining him a dedicated local following and subsequent international success.

Cheikh Lô will also perform two sets at the Blue Llama Jazz Club on Saturday, January 25 (7pm & 9pm). Visit https://www.bluellamaclub.com/event/cheikh-lo for ticket information for these performances.

This Artist Q&A is co-sponsored by Center for World Performance Studies and African Studies Center.

Location: Hutchins Hall
Organized By: Asian Pacific American Law Students Association

January 30th is the Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. On February 19th, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, one of the most blatant forms of racial profiling in US history, which led to the forced removal and incarceration of over 120,000 American citizens and residents on the basis of being ethnically Japanese. Fred T. Korematsu was one of many who refused to be incarcerated, and was arrested. A national civil rights hero, Fred Korematsu appealed his case to the Supreme Court. Although the Supreme Court ruled against him in 1944, in 1983 his conviction was overturned in a coram nobis proceeding where Fred Korematsu addressed the court, saying, “I would like to see the government admit they were wrong, and do something about it so this will never happen again to any American citizen of any race, creed, or color.”

In 2014 and again in 2019, the US government attempted to reopen the Fort Sill camp to incarcerate migrant children from Latin America; Fort Sill was previously used as a concentration camp where Native Americans and Japanese Americans were detained. In June 2017, ICE agents raided and arrested Iraqi families in the Detroit area, leading to the ACLU’s lawsuit, Hamama v. Adducci. Raids on Iraqi families have continued into 2019.

On January 30th, APALSA's Political Action Committee, in partnership with the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission and Stop Repeating History would like to invite you to attend a screening of the documentary Alternative Facts: The Lies of Executive Order 9066 by Jon Osaki, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A led by University of Michigan Law student Kevin Luong.

This event features incredible guest speakers: Dr. Karen Korematsu, Don Tamaki, Aamina Ahmed, Mary Kamidoi, and Michael Steinberg. Free and open to the public. Food from Curry On will be provided with RSVP: bit.ly/2tfDsnu

Malaysian Cultural Night 2020 (February 2, 2020 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71700 71700-17868607@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, February 2, 2020 6:00pm
Location: Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre
Organized By: Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA)

For the past 10 years, the Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA) has come together to prepare for one special night every year: the Malaysian Cultural Night.
Free for all, people of all ages are welcome to spend their evening with a musical that delves into Malaysian art, culture and racial dynamics. Guests are also invited for a free dinner with some good Malaysian company after the show. This year, we present Kita.

Kita (Us)

Malaysian Cultural Night 2020 will follow the story of 4 Malaysian students who transferred to the University of Michigan, each with their unique background stories. The light hearted play will showcase unity among ethnically diverse people, and most importantly, the significance of true friendship. The characters will embody individuals that struggle with family expectations, finding their identities away from home, making friends all whilst adapting to a new culture in a new country. This play is highly relatable to students who are studying abroad, and it aims to realize the experience as well as to educate the non-Malaysian audience on our identity. MCN 2020 will also showcase a variety of traditional dances from different ethnic groups in Malaysia.

Location: East Quadrangle

Stone Sound Collective unites diverse musicians and instruments to create a new global soundscape. Led by multi-percussionist Mark Stone, the group brings together celebrated world percussion traditions of Africa and India with the lyricism of cello and saxophone. Stone Sound Collective performs new music drawing on Mark's wide-ranging compositional influences, stretching from American jazz to traditional African music and classical Indian music to European concert music.

Prof. Mark Stone is a composer-performer with a passion for using music to bring diverse communities together. An internationally recognized multi-percussionist, Stone has performed with the foremost musicians of Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, India, Trinidad, Ecuador, and the United States. In the group, Stone plays the newly-invented array mbira, an American-made 120 key lamellaphone and a wide range of traditional melodic African instruments, including the Ghanaian gyil, Ugandan akogo, and South African karimba. He is joined by Matt Dufresne (saxophones, flute, atenteben, and nadaswaram), Abigail Alwin (cello), Chinelo Amen-Ra (djembe, congas, and cajon) and Sam Jeyasingham (mridangam, tabla, kanjira, thavil, and morsing). These established artists freely cross musical boundaries with their dynamic playing and are exceptional improvisers, bringing a wide-range of performance experience and artistry to the Stone Sound Collective.

The idea of a unanimous Burmese identity is flawed and presents a rocky foundation for the nation-state of Myanmar. By exploring broader patterns in Asia and connecting them back to Myanmar, we can understand how the rise of nationalism in the country, especially extremist Buddhist movements, obscures its diversity and attempts to rewrite history.

Speaking Up & Speaking Out: Why the AAPI Community Must Be Politically Engaged (April 6, 2020 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73444 73444-18223778@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 6, 2020 5:30pm

Join us for Jenn's lecture on "Speaking Up and Speaking Out: Why the AAPI Community Must Be Politically Engaged." Jenn is a proud Asian American feminist, scientist and nerd who currently blogs at Reappropriate.co, one of the web’s oldest AAPI feminist and race activist blogs.

For more information and to RSVP, please click here: https://bit.ly/jennfang

Lecture Description:
Asian American and Pacific Islander communities are popularly typecast as apolitical and disengaged, but these stereotypes ignore over 150 years of AAPI movement history marked by intense grassroots political organizing around issues of social justice. In the face of profound, and often state-sanctioned, racial violence, AAPIs have repeatedly come together to demand justice and liberation, often in partnership with other oppressed peoples. The current political climate makes that history even more relevant as Islamophobia and the forcible detention of migrants along the US-Mexico border stir memories of Chinese Exclusion and Japanese American incarceration. In this lecture, Dr. Fang will draw from watershed moments throughout AAPI organizing history – including the landmark Justice for Vincent Chin case that took place in Detroit in the 1980’s – to contextualize contemporary racial politics, and will argue forcefully for why today’s generation of AAPIs must continue that tradition of political engagement in the ongoing fight for racial and social justice.

This event is a part of Asian/Pacific Islander American (A/PIA) Heritage Month which is celebrated mid-March to mid-April at the University of Michigan. For a full list of events, please visit MESA's website.

In honor of Juneteenth, The Office of Multi-Ethnic Students Affairs, Trotter Multicultural Center and The Department Of Afro-American and African Studies have joined together in an effort to recognize and pay tribute to 19 historical Black figures and symbolically commemorate the date of Juneteenth. Every hour beginning at 9:00am we will be celebrating #Blackjoy on our social media pages throughout the day by posting images and short bios of the selected individuals from a curated list gathered by MESA, Trotter and the DAAS Staff. Nineteen different folks who were civil rights leaders, freedom rights fighters, abolitionists and activists etc., will be acknowledged and celebrated publicly as we pay homage to those who supported and contributed to freedom, equal rights, and justice etc., for all black people from all different decades throughout history. We encourage university administration, faculty, and staff to repost, share or join in on this day as we celebrate and pay tribute to a small sample of our African American freedom fighters. Please feel free to reach out with any questions about participating if interested.

From the very beginning the United States has dealt with Native Americans with a series of policies and treaties. Most of the policies were aimed at assimilation. For many years Native Americans were forced to live by standards set by the United States. But with the formation of the American Indian Movement, they started to fight back. Learn about the beginnings of the American Indian Movement and the organized protests that they led including the Occupation of Alcatraz and Wounded Knee. Native Representation with Dr. Adrienne Keene (October 22, 2020 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78723 78723-20109386@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 22, 2020 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location

Dr. Adrienne Keene (Cherokee Nation) is a Native scholar, writer, blogger, and activist, and is passionate about reframing how the world sees contemporary Native cultures. She is the creator and author of Native Appropriations, a blog discussing cultural appropriation and stereotypes of Native peoples in fashion, film, music, and other forms of pop culture. She is also a co-host of the All My Relations Podcast that aims to explore our relationships— relationships to land, to our creatural relatives, and to one another.

Through her writing and activism, Keene questions and problematizes the ways Indigenous peoples are represented, asking for celebrities, large corporations, and designers to consider the ways they incorporate "Native" elements into their work. She is very interested in the way Native peoples are using social and new media to challenge misrepresentations and present counter-narratives that showcase true Native cultures and identities.

Adrienne holds a doctorate in Culture, Communities, and Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her research focuses on college access for Native (American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian) students and the role of precollege access programs in student success. She is currently working on a book about Native students in the college process, documenting the work of College Horizons, an incredible precollege program for Native students.

This talk will focus on stereotypes and cultural appropriation, and looks at the ways Native peoples are represented throughout popular culture and the ways Native peoples are pushing back on misrepresentation through social and new media. This talk explores the ways Native peoples have harnessed the power of storytelling through social media to change perceptions, make our communities visible, and tell our own modern, diverse stories in our own voices.

T. Ayo Alston teaches and practices a signature theatrical style of West African drum and dance culture that captures the strength and power of women and community. Ayo is the founder, executive director, composer, and choreographer of Ayodele Drum and Dance, a performance training organization created for women to affirm their self-confidence and strength. Through Ayodele, she has performed, educated, fostered interpersonal healing, and created artistic work from a foundation of traditional African cultures fused with contemporary dance styles.

Throughout her career Ayo has taught, choreographed, and performed at schools and universities locally and nationally, as well as in African and Brazilian countries, as an independent artist and as a member of other companies and organizations, such as Dance Africa, Drum Cafe West, Le Bagatae Company of Guinea, Les Ballets Africans, and Muntu Dance Theatre.

In the last two years Ayo has been focused on fine-tuning and sharing her ability to compose music on African instruments, such as the kalimba. Come hang out and get to know authors Stacie Sheldon and Margaret Noodin for a fun afternoon of Books in Anishinaabemowin!! This event features two books intended to show the contemporary Anishinaabe worldview as it is situated between the traditions of the past and as it contributes to the innovation needed for survival into the future. What the Chickadee Knows and The Adventures of Nimkii were both published this fall 2020!

Bebikaan-ezhiwebiziwinan Nimkii: The Adventures of Nimkii is the story of a modern dog who lives an adventurous life through all four seasons. Learners will notice the book provides a basic introduction to most of the things that make Ojibwe unique in an interactive format. The book is fully bilingual, written by Nimkii's human companion, Stacie Sheldon. https://ojibwe.net/stories/childrens/nimkii-book/

What the Chickadee Knows (Gijigijigaaneshiinh Gikendaan), written by Margaret Noodin, is a gesture toward a future that includes Anishinaabemowin and other indigenous languages seeing growth and revitalization. This bilingual collection includes Anishinaabemowin and English, with the poems mirroring one another on facing pages. In the first part, "What We Notice" (E-Maaminonendamang), Noodin introduces a series of seasonal poems that invoke Anishinaabe science and philosophy. The second part, "History" (Gaa Ezhiwebag), offers nuanced contemporary views of Anishinaabe history. Illustrated by U-M Alum, Shannon Noori. https://birchbarkbooks.com/ficti.../what-the-chickadee-knows

We hope you join the conversation this Sunday!

Afro-Indigeneity on the Way to a Post-Settler World (November 20, 2020 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78759 78759-20119194@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 20, 2020 6:00pm

What does it mean to be Black and Indigenous? How does racialization specifically affect Afro-Indigenous people? How do the values of settler colonialism perpetuate violence against both Black and Indigenous people, and how can we adopt the values of indigeneity in order to move towards a post-settler world? In this panel discussion, Dr. Kyle T. Mays and Amber Starks will discuss these questions and more.

Dr. Kyle T Mays (Black/Saginaw Anishinaabe) is a transdisciplinary scholar and public intellectual of Indigenous studies, Afro-Indigenous studies, urban history, and Indigenous popular culture. He is an Assistant Professor in Africa American Studies at UCLA. He earned his Ph.D. in the Department of History at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign in 2015. At present, he is working on three books. The first is titled, Hip Hop Beats, Indigenous Rhymes: Modernity and Hip Hop in Indigenous North America (Forthcoming, June 2018, SUNY Press). This book explores how Indigenous Hip Hop artists challenge settler colonialism and construct modern, Indigenous identities through Hip Hop culture. The second book is titled, The Indigenous Motor City: Indigenous People and the Making of Modern Detroit (under contract with the University of Washington Press). This book examines how Indigenous people and representations of them were central to the development of Detroit, from the late 19th century the present. He is also co-editing an anthology titled, Decolonizing Hip Hop: Blackness and Indigeneity in Hip Hop Culture (under contract with Sense Publishers: Youth, Media, and Culture Series).

Amber Starks (aka Melanin Mvskoke) is an Afro Indigenous (African-American and Native American) activist, aspiring cultural critic/commentator, a student of decolonial theory, and budding abolitionist. She is an enrolled member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and is also of Shawnee, Yuchi, Quapaw, and Cherokee descent. Her passion is the intersection of Black and Native American identity. She seeks to normalize, affirm, and uplift the multidimensional identity in both the Black and Native communities through discourse and advocacy around anti-Blackness, abolishing blood quantum, Black liberation, and Indigenous sovereignty. Her activism encourages Black and Indigenous peoples to prioritize one another and divest from compartmentalizing struggles. She ultimately believes the partnerships between Black and Indigenous peoples (and all POC) will aid in the dismantling of anti-blackness, white supremacy, and settler colonialism, globally.

December Togetherness: QTBIPOC Gatherings
The Togetherness: QTBIPOC Gatherings are a collaboration between MESA and the Spectrum Center focusing on centering the experiences of Queer, Trans, Black/Indigenous/Students of Color through sharing meals, discussions, and creating connections with people in the QTBIPOC community at UM and in the surrounding areas.

This event’s host will be Trey Boyton (she/her/hers). Trey has spent her professional career working to create inclusive environments. For nearly 20 years, she worked in university settings driving equity and inclusion for students, faculty and staff at the University of Michigan. She shifted to the tech industry in 2017 when she joined Duo Security as their first head of diversity and inclusion. As the lead for overall diversity strategy, Trey envisioned a bold road ahead for Duo and implemented company-wide programs and initiatives that positively grew Duo’s magical culture and team. For Trey, inclusion work is deeply personal. She describes it as head to heart work centered on creating space so that employees and teams are valued, celebrated, and able to define their own success. In short, her ultimate goal is to reduce barriers to brilliance.
