Abstract: RNA regulation permeates neurobiology. Nociceptors are sensory neurons tasked with the detection of pain producing stimuli. Persistent changes in their activity, termed plasticity, benefit survival through injury avoidance. Nociceptors rely on cap-dependent translation to rapidly increase protein synthesis in response to pro-inflammatory signals. Comparatively little is known regarding the role of the regulatory factors bound to the 3' end of mRNA in nociceptor sensitization. Poly(A)-binding protein (PABP) stimulates translation initiation by bridging the Poly(A) tail to the eukaryotic initiation factor 4F complex associated with the mRNA cap. We have developed an RNA-based competitive inhibitor of PABP that attenuates behavioral responses to pain in mice. To identify the Poly(A) mRNAs subject to privileged translation in response to noxious cues, we have applied ribosome profiling to primary sensory neurons and tissues. A small number of transcripts are selectively translated in response to plasticity mediators. Among them is the capsid forming protein Arc. Arc has been implicated in synaptic plasticity and learning in the brain. We demonstrate that the ribosomal S6 kinase 1 is responsible for Arc production in nociceptors and describe a new role for local translation of Arc in afferent fibers. Collectively, our findings uncover mechanisms and targets of RNA control in sensory neurons that can be exploited to disrupt pain signaling.

The federal government, states, and utilities administer programs to improve the energy efficiency of low-income homes and affordable multifamily buildings. Investments in measures to save energy, as simple as air sealing and insulation, can also yield a broad range of non-energy benefits. This presentation will present research results that show that weatherization can improve health, home conditions, and social determinants of health. The results are drawn from three separate studies that were conducted nationally, regionally (Midwest and Northeast), and in Knoxville, Tennessee. Three3, Inc. conducts research and educational programming to promote the integration of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The organization particularly focuses on fostering sustainable futures that: provide equitable benefits to low-income and disadvantaged populations (intra-generational equity); meets ethical obligations to future generations (inter-generational equity); and makes best use of the convergence of human knowledge and technology to meet sustainability goals.

The demand for lightweighting of our infrastructure and transportation equipment has seen a significant growth the last two decades; this need is expected to increase as reduction of carbon footprint and energy consumption will be major drivers in the decades ahead. Aluminum has played a pivotal role in this lightweighting movement and will continue to do so. There is a need for high performance Al alloys such as enhanced modulus, usage at elevated temperatures, and damage resistant alloys, etc. In this presentation a retrospective and a prospective view of alloy design for Al will be reviewed and discussed.

Diran Apelian is the Alcoa-Howmet Professor of Engineering and Founding Director of the Metal Processing Institute (MPI) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He is also Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Irvine.
He received his B.S. degree in metallurgical engineering from Drexel University in 1968 and his doctorate in materials science and engineering from MIT in 1972. He worked at Bethlehem Steel’s Homer Research Laboratories before joining Drexel University’s faculty in 1976. At Drexel he held various positions, including professor, head of the Department of Materials Engineering, associate dean of the College of Engineering and vice-provost of the University. He joined WPI in July 1990 as WPI’s Provost. In 1996 he returned to the faculty and led the activities of the Metal Processing Institute, which he founded. In 2019, he joined the faculty at UCI.
He is credited with pioneering work in various areas of metal processing – specifically in molten metal processing, alloy development, solidification and casting, surface engineering, spray casting/forming, and powder metallurgy. During the last decade, he has worked on sustainable development issues, and particularly, resource recovery, reuse, and recycling. Apelian is the recipient of many distinguished honors and awards – national and international; he has over 700 publications to his credit; and serves on several technical, corporate and editorial boards. During 2008/2009, he served as President of TMS. He served as Chair of the ASM Educational Foundation Board of Trustees (2016-2018). Apelian is a Fellow of TMS, ASM, and APMI; he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), National Academy of Inventors (NAI), and the Armenian Academy of Sciences (AAS). He is a recipient of the 2016 Bernard Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering Education (with Kris Wobbe, Art Heinricher and Rick Vaz).

TITLE: Advancing Evidence-based Biomedical Engineering Education in Real Time

Undergraduate biomedical engineering (BME) programs typically consist of courses from several different academic departments combined with BME-specific courses taught by faculty trained in a variety of disciplines. While some students embrace this diversity in courses and disciplinary perspectives, many struggle with how to translate these experiences into career opportunities. BME students are often concerned that they are perceived as a “jack of all trades, masters of none.” In 2016, the BME Department sought to find new ways to integrate BME professional practice into the curriculum.

Informed by organizational change theory, we asked: 1) Is there potential for change; 2) what strategies facilitate change; and 3) how can these strategies be implemented? As a result, we developed an Instructional Design Sequence, a new approach to instruction in which students, post docs, and faculty create short modules that use evidence-based teaching practices to expose BME students to BME professional practice.

This presentation describes how the Instructional Design Sequence was conceived and demonstrates how theory can be used to inform practice. The resultant Sequence is a transferrable model for transforming engineering education, offering a mechanism for integrating new career-relevant curriculum into undergraduate curriculum, while training future educators in evidence-based instructional practices.

ABSTRACT: With the first drugs approved, oligonucleotides are rising to become a new, major class of therapeutic modalities on par with small molecules and biologics.
RNAi enables simple and specific modulation of gene expression when the chemical architecture supporting efficient delivery in vivo is defined. Currently, in liver, a single subcutaneous administration supports a year of clinical efficacy, changing our vision of how medicine will be practiced in the future.
The unprecedented duration of effect relies on oligonucleotide endocytosis and entrapment within endosomal/lysosomal compartments. These naturally formed, intracellular deposits provide a continuous release of compounds for RISC loading and productive silencing, supporting multi-month efficacy. Of course, this approach is dependent on extensive and complex chemical stabilization that ensures the survival of the oligonucleotides in highly aggressive biological environments.
In the context of fully stabilized compounds, we have used diverse chemical engineering to define the rules driving oligonucleotide distribution, efficacy, and toxicity. At this point, efficient modulation of gene expression in multiple extrahepatic tissues is possible (muscle, heart, fat, placenta, etc). One of our engineering efforts resulted in the identification of a di-branched chemical scaffold that enables potent and durable gene silencing in the brain and spinal cord. Using huntingtin – the causative gene in Huntington disease – as a model, we demonstrate that CNS-active RNAi induces potent protein silencing (~ 90%) in all brain regions tested in both rodents and non-human primates. Silencing persists for at least six months, with the degree of gene modulation correlating to the level of the guide strand tissue accumulation.
Demonstration of extrahepatic activity, in particular the development of a CNS-active RNAi scaffold, is opening other tissues and the brain for RNAi-based modulation of gene expression and establishing a path toward the development of new cures for genetically-defined neurodegenerative disorders.

The Integrated Health Sciences Core of the Michigan Center on Lifestage Environmental Exposures and Disease (M-LEEaD) presents an Environmental Research Seminar featuring John Spengler, Akira Yamaguchi Professor of Environmental Health and Human Habitation, and Director of the JPB Environmental Health Fellowship Program at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Dr. Spengler has conducted research on personal monitoring, air pollution health effects, indoor air pollution, and a variety of environmental sustainability issues. Several of his investigations have focused on housing design and its effects on ventilation rates, building materials’ selection, energy consumption, and total environmental quality in homes.

Spengler chaired the committee on Harvard Sustainability Principles; and served on Harvard’s Greenhouse Gases Taskforce to develop the University’s carbon reduction goals and strategies, as well as Harvard’s Greenhouse Gases Executive Committee. He serves on the National Academies’ Health and Medicine Division “Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research and Medicine”. Previously he chaired the National Academies’ NRC “Green Schools: Attributes for Health and Learning” committee and the IOM “Effect of Climate Change on Indoor Air Quality and Public Health” committee; and he has served as an advisor to the World Health Organization on indoor air pollution, personal exposure and air pollution epidemiology. He now serves on the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Chemistry of Indoor Environments advisory committee.

In 2003, Spengler received a Heinz Award for the Environment; in 2007, the Air & Waste Management Association Lyman Ripperton Environmental Educator Award; in 2008, the Max von Pettenkofer Award for distinguished contributions in indoor air science from the International Society of Indoor Air Quality & Climate’s Academy of Fellows; and in 2015, the ASHRAE Environmental Health Award.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example: a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students: $500 and to Tauber students: $150. Keith Slotkin, Member and PI, Donald Danforth Plant Science Center,  Associate Professor, Division of Biological Sciences, University of Missouri Columbia

Abstract: The field of epigenetic silencing is replete with labs studying how transcriptional silencing is epigenetically maintained, or in some cases re-targeted, across cell divisions and generations. On the other hand, the initiation of that silencing in the first place, especially for DNA that is “new” to the genome, is not well understood. Although the propagation of epigenetic silencing is based on the chromatin level, our data in the powerful model plant Arabidopsis demonstrates that de novo initiation of transposable element and transgene silencing is based on RNA, and utilizes a host of small RNA classes that function specifically in the initiation of silencing to guide the first round of DNA methylation. I plan to present my ongoing work on the molecular mechanisms of silencing initiation, focusing on the key RNA-dependent processes necessary to initiate epigenetic silencing.

Abstract: CRISPR-Cas serves as an RNA-based adaptive immunity system in prokaryotes. The diverse CRISPR systems can be categorized into two major classes and multiple types therein. Type I CRISPR-Cas (or CRISPR-Cas3) belongs to Class 1 and is the most prevalent CRISPR system found in nature. It features a sequential target-searching and degradation process. First, the target-searching complex Cascade (CRISPR associated complex for antiviral defense) uses its guide RNA to find the complementary dsDNA target, and opens a special structure called R-loop at the target site. Its helicase-nuclease fusion enzyme Cas3 is then specifically recruited to the Cascade/R-loop site to processively degrade long-stretches of double-stranded DNA nearby. I will give a comprehensive explanation of CRISPR-Cas3 based interference mechanism, based on the high-resolution biochemistry and structural biology work from my lab. I will further explain CRISPR-Cas3 based genome editing applications, and give perspectives on its therapeutic potential.

Abstract: Parasitic protist Trypanosoma brucei causes African human and animal trypanosomiasis, a spectrum of diseases affecting the population and economy in sub-Saharan Africa. These digenetic hemoflagellates belong to Kinetoplastea, a taxonomic class distinguished by possession of a kinetoplast. This nucleoprotein body contains mitochondrial DNA of two kinds: ~25 maxicircles (each ~23kb) encoding ribosomal RNAs, two guide RNA (gRNAs), ribosomal proteins and subunits of respiratory complexes, and approximately 5000 of ~1kb minicircles bearing the majority of gRNA genes. Relaxed maxicircles and minicircles are interlinked and packed into a dense disc-shaped network by association with histone-like proteins. Both maxicircle and minicircle genomes are transcribed by a phage-like RNA polymerase from multiple promoters into 3′-extended precursors which undergo 3′-5′ exonucleolytic trimming. To function in mitochondrial translation, pre-mRNAs must further proceed through 3′ adenylation, and often gRNA-directed uridine insertion/deletion editing, and 3′ A/U-tailing. Ribosomal and guide RNAs are typically 3′ uridylated. Historically, the fascinating phenomenon of RNA editing has attracted major research efforts, but more recent developments provided insights into pre- and post-edited processing events and identified key players in transforming primary precursors into functional RNAs and regulating their turnover. I will present a forward-looking model that integrates known modalities of mitochondrial RNA metabolism.

Every instance of a design process can be represented with a design signature – a tracing of design activities over time that can be represented as a timeline. Design signatures can differ across levels of expertise of the designer(s) in significant ways. These representations have been shown to be effective for teaching undergraduate engineers about the complexities of design processes.

In this talk, I will review the research findings from an analysis of verbal protocols from 177 individuals with a wide range of expertise (from beginning undergrads through expert professionals in industry) who solved 401 separate design problems. We found that individuals with more expertise 1) use processes that demonstrate a higher level of complexity, 2) consider a broader set of information and objects during their design process, 3) spend longer solving the problem they were given, and 4) are more likely to demonstrate a cascade pattern in their tracing across design activities. I will also discuss several teaching activities that are derived from the research.

My goal for the first part of this seminar is to take you on my journey through the field of materials science and engineering, from the day that I discovered this amazing field to today. Together, we will briefly overview the tough decisions that life throws at us, often in unexpected ways; we will discuss what “work hard, play hard” means and why that’s at least one proven method for how to approach a reasonable work/life balance; and we will discuss why you should give back to the professional organizations that support you.

The remainder of the presentation will focus on the current research in my group, concentrating largely on ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs). UHTCs are an emerging class of structural materials capable of withstanding extreme environments, which is allowing them to be used in applications ranging from hypersonic flight and rocket propulsion to advanced nuclear reactors, electrodes for metal production, and more. These applications involve temperatures, heat fluxes, radiation levels, strain rates, chemical reactivities, or other stresses that are beyond the capabilities of existing materials. This presentation will review recent research on UHTCs, focusing on mechanical and thermal behavior at temperatures up to 2000°C, or higher. The presentation will overview the MS and PhD research of the current graduate students in the group and take a deeper dive into one or two key projects related to improving the elevated temperature thermal and mechanical properties of boride and carbide based UHTCs. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of some emerging trends and future needs.

Luis Batista, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Developmental Biology, Washington University in St. Louis

Abstract: The overarching goal of the Batista lab is to understand the regulation and function of telomerase in tissue fitness, disease, and cancer. The Batista laboratory uses genome-wide methods to uncover alterations that drive cellular failure upon critical telomerase dysfunction, using the targeted differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells to tissues of clinical relevance as a primary model. We combine in vitro biochemical and mechanistic studies with our ability to generate and differentiate pluripotent cells towards different fates to better understand the importance of correct ribonucleoprotein assembly and function in tissue fitness and to determine the events that lead from impaired RNA-protein assembly to disease in humans.

This year is MUSES' 20th year anniversary, and our theme this year is Building a Legacy. On Nov 12th, we will have the pleasure to host a very special guest, Dr. Susan Montgomery, that truly represents what legacy looks like.

Doctor Susan Montgomery has had an important role in mentoring and advising students and student organizations throughout her career. She joined the University of Michigan in 1993 after a two-year postdoc developing educational modules following her PhD from Princeton University. She has taught many courses over the years including ‘Teaching Engineering’ which molds future engineering faculty. She has served as an advisor for undergraduate chemical engineering students, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and Habitat for Humanity. Recently she received the “Achievement Award” at the Willie Hobbs Moore Luncheon, given to an individual in STEM whose achievements encourage and inspire others to achieve their goals. She is in the process of transitioning to phased retirement, and certainly her contributions to our organization and our community at the University of Michigan will be forever remembered.

As the data tsunami washed over everything including college campuses, universities invested heavily in data management systems and then layered on services to create the highly digitally-engineered environments in which we work today. Within that context, I’ll review the seeding and ongoing nurturing of two U-M services (Atlas and Problem Roulette) that share common themes of access and transparency. As examples of research enabled by these services, I’ll present evidence showing that: (i) on average, females study more for less reward in STEM subjects than male students, and (ii) increased selectivity, as measured by ACT/SAT scores, is a minor factor driving undergraduate grades upward. The talk will close by inviting your thoughts and discussion on potential future directions for these and similar services.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Prof. August E. (Gus) Evrard is a first-generation computational cosmologist and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the Departments of Physics and Astronomy at U-M. Author of the first algorithm to enable multi-fluid simulation of galaxy and large-scale cosmic structure formation, Prof. Evrard's research is focused on understanding the population of clusters of galaxies, the rarest and largest gravitationally bound systems in the universe. Named a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2012, his research is documented in over 200 refereed papers with 22,000 total citations. Within the Office of Academic Innovation he leads two separate projects, one offering visual summaries of Michigan's recent academic landscape (Atlas) and another providing “points-free” study support using local exam content (Problem Roulette). Both are used by thousands of students each year at U-M.

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example: a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students: $500 and to Tauber students: $150. Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 24 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, April 7 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, October 6 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for November 17, 2019 (11:00 - 3:00 pm) at the Ross School of Business. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Over the last two years, all students who have taken the exam have passed!

Kristian E. Baker, Ph.D. (Principle Investigator), Center for RNA Molecular Biology, Case Western Reserve University

Abstract: The nonsense-mediated mRNA decay pathway in eukaryotes serves as an RNA quality control system to protect cells from persistent expression of C-terminally truncated polypeptides as a consequence of premature translation termination at nonsense codons. How the cell defines a translation termination event as premature and, subsequently, how this information is communicated to the decay machinery so as to accelerate the degradation of the mRNA remain unclear. We have previously shown that mutations within UPF1 - a member of the SF1 helicase superfamily and a core component of the NMD machinery - which inactivate its ATPase activity give rise to RNA decay intermediates that accumulate due to stalling of ribosomes at or near the premature termination codon. These findings revealed a key functional interaction between the translation apparatus and NMD machinery, and signify that ATP hydrolysis by UPF1 targets the ribosome to facilitate peptide hydrolysis and/or ribosome recycling during translation termination.
My lab’s ongoing efforts directed at dissecting the how UPF1 impacts premature translation termination will be presented.

Abstract: For many genes, steady-state messenger (m)RNA levels provide an inaccurate reflection of the extent to which they are translated into proteins. This seminar will focus on post-transcriptional mechanisms that affect the “quality” and “quantity” of RNAs produced in a cell-type- and context-dependent manner. First, I will describe the identification of a conserved developmentally regulated alternative splicing program that supports terminal differentiation, functional competence, and postnatal maturation of hepatocytes. Second, I will show evidence that following liver injury, this developmental splicing program is transiently re-activated to rewire a critical signaling pathway that enables proper liver regeneration. Third, I will demonstrate that in severe alcoholic hepatitis, the sustained re-activation of this developmental program causes hepatocytes to shed adult functions and become more regenerative but threatens overall survival by populating the liver with functionally-immature cells.

Biological materials dynamically sense and adapt their form and function to changing environments, but these capabilities have not been fully replicated in the synthetic materials traditionally used by engineers. My research has shown that integrating biohybrid and biomimetic materials with engineered systems yields devices capable of complex behaviors such as self-assembly, self-maintenance, and self-healing. These responsive behaviors are especially desirable in machines that interface with the dynamic human body, as they enable sensing and responding to individualized patient needs. This talk will cover my fundamental research in the field of biohybrid design, including: 1) Forward engineering of skeletal muscle bioactuators for adaptive biohybrid machines; 2) Design and implementation of smart responsive materials in implantable devices; 3) Micro-invasive tools for understanding cell-cell communication in complex 3D networks. These advances will enable my future lab to develop neuromuscular bioactuators for restoring motility in diseased or damaged bodily systems and actuating implantable devices. This talk will make the case that the next generation of biologically relevant machines must integrate our dynamic natural world with our own adaptive bodies.

Abstract

Reading the human mind by electronic means used to be the domain of science fiction – and is still largely so. At the same time, technologies collectively labelled as brain-computer interfaces have moved forward, motivated by needs for assistive tools for neurologically impaired people and to advance our fundamental understanding of the brain. An applied example would be the use of electronic means to read out directly from the brain the intention to move an arm or a hand, and to decipher such signals to actuate an external robotic device. Another example is the
reading out brain signals produced when listening to or formulating speech. To access brain’s microcircuits at high space-time resolution requires implantation of electronic listening posts, call them nodes, at a number of nearby locations in a given functional area of the cortex. Which brings up the question of the day for neuroengineers: how many nodes might be required or are possible to implant, and how does one physically implement arrays of microscale electronic probes? What are the data rates involved in extracting brain signals and how to design a communication link to send the data onward for decoding by external computing platforms? What about reversing the direction of the process to use implanted probes to deliver signals directly into the brain (‘write-in’)? Through contemporary examples, this presentation will review recent accomplishments in the field from an electrical engineer’s viewpoint and discuss both the challenges and opportunities ahead to build next generations of brain-computer interfaces while explicitly exploiting many of the early 21st century advances in microelectronics, telecommunication, and high end computing.

Bio

Arto V. Nurmikko, a native of Finland, is a L. Herbert Ballou University Professor of Engineering and Physics at Brown. He received his degrees from University of California, Berkeley, with postdoctoral stays at MIT and Hebrew University. Professor Nurmikko conducts research in neuroengineering, brain sciences, nanophotonics and microelectronics, especially for the translation of device research to new technologies in biomedical, life science, and photonics applications. His current interests include development of implantable brain communication interfaces, microscale neural circuit sensors, compact semiconductor lasers, and high resolution acoustic microscopy. Professor Nurmikko is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and Fellow of the Optical Society of America. He has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and to the Academy of Letters and Science of Finland. He was the co-recipient of the Israel Brain Prize in 2013.

Team-based pedagogies are pervasive in higher education, especially in engineering. Some instructors choose group work for logistical reasons, such as “we only have five testbeds.” Others seek to provide a particular student experience: students can teach and learn from each other, they can undertake more complicated projects, and they can develop collaboration skills that will benefit them later in their careers. Whatever the reason for using team-based pedagogies, instructors must be cognizant of team dysfunctions – some of which are invisible to the instructors or even to members of the team – that can affect certain students’ experiences in our classes.

In this talk, I will (1) present evidence that particular groups are more likely to have negative team experiences (and that teamwork is inherently gendered and raced), (2) suggest mechanisms for identifying and remedying some team dysfunctions, and (3) argue that instructors have a moral obligation to critically examine teamwork practices in an attempt to equitably serve our diverse student population.

Abstract:
Learning analytics dashboards (LADs) have emerged from a growing interest in presenting and visualizing students’ learning activities in digital learning environments, and they are growing in popularity for both residential and online courses. Dashboard displays are seen as powerful metacognitive tools, and delivering them to learners is intended to support awareness and decision-making, and trigger self-reflection. Despite their increasing availability, recent meta-reviews of the existing research on LADs have revealed that there are few empirical studies on the impact of dashboards on student motivation, behavior, and skills. In this talk I will present the student dashboard we have designed and tested here at the University at Michigan, called MyLA (My Learning Analytics). In a partnership between the School of Information, School of Education, and the Teaching and Learning group at ITS, we have created a Canvas-integrated dashboard that uses design principles derived from Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) theory combined with a focus on accessible and actionable information. Based data from 10 Winter 2019 courses where MyLA was available, I will describe our early findings about how UM students have used the dashboard, and the relationships between dashboard use with performance and measures of self-regulation.

Bio: Dr. Teasley is a Research Professor in the School of Information, the Director of the Learning Education & Design Lab (LED Lab), and Core Faculty member of the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS) at the University of Michigan. Her recent work has focused on assembling and utilizing institutionally-held student data to design and evaluate new ways to support student success in Higher Education. From 2016-2018 she was the president of the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR), and she is currently the chair of the International Alliance for the Advancement of Learning in the Digital Era (IAALDE).

Max Shtein earned his B.S. from University of California Berkeley in 1998 and his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 2004. He has made enabling contributions to the science and technology of organic optoelectronics, including the modeling and demonstration of novel devices and highly scalable methods of device processing, some of which are being commercialized.

He joined the Materials Science and Engineering department at the University of Michigan in 2004, where he has focused on the physics and technology of organic optoelectronic materials and devices.

He is the recipient of the MRS graduate student Gold Medal Award, the Newport Award for Excellence and Leadership in Photonics and Optoelectronics, the Holt Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the MSE Department Achievement Award, and the Vulcan Prize for Excellence in Education.

Dried fruits wrinkle for the same reason that leaves and flowers do — mechanical instabilities arising due to a naturally occurring mismatch in lengths. Can such geometric incompatibilities be used for the rational design and control of wrinkle patterns at will? In this talk, we discuss the possibility of designing wrinkle patterns "in the large" using a recently derived effective or coarse-grained model for wrinkles arising in the vanishing thickness limit. After explaining the basic mechanics involved, we show how the model predicts the patterns in various experiments and simulations of thin and ultrathin confined elastic shells. More generally, we derive a classification scheme for wrinkle patterns into three basic types, as well as a Plateau-like principle predicting the arrangement of wrinkles in the negatively-curved (saddle-shaped) case. Such rules open the way towards the principled design of wrinkle patterns, with potential applications ranging from flexible electronics to synthetic skins.

This is joint work with Yousra Timounay and Eleni Katifori (UPenn), and Desislava Todorova and Joseph D. Paulsen (Syracuse).

Engineering design is complex, where each phase is dependent on the others and iteration occurs with and across these phases. Further, a successful design outcome hinges on foundational work done during the "front-end” of design processes, which includes problem definition, deep needs and stakeholder assessments using design ethnography, requirements development, and idea generation. Research has shown that experts develop both conscious and subconscious design strategies that impact success, and that novices often lack strategies and the ability to successfully implement them. This seminar will discuss investigations of strategies in front-end design, ways these strategies can be translated to design and education tools, and the role of front-end design in broadening recognition of skills that engineering includes.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Dr. Shanna Daly is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering. She has a B.E. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Dayton and a Ph.D. degree in Engineering Education from Purdue University. Her research characterizes front-end design practices across the student to practitioner continuum, uses these findings to develop tools to support design best practices, and studies the impact of front-end design tools on design success. She focuses on divergent and convergent thinking processes, including concept generation and development and problem space exploration, how to foster creativity in engineering work, and processes to understand social and cultural elements of the contexts in which engineering work occurs and integrate them into decision making. Her studies often involve both professional and educational contexts and collaborations across disciplines with scholars in engineering, education, industrial design, and psychology.

Abstract

Future applications, such as wearable electronics, flexible and transparent displays, or devices for solar energy conversion and storage require materials with more versatility, more integrated functions, and more environmentally responsible processing compared to traditional options (i.e., inorganic semiconductors, like silicon). Organic semiconductors, such as small molecules and polymers, are well-suited to these future requirements; however, their electrical properties and environmental stability are inherently worse. Hybrid materials, such as inorganic nanoparticles embedded within a polymer film, can mitigate the trade-offs that exist for any single material type by combining organic and inorganic semiconductors. For example, hybrid materials can impart multi-functionality, flexibility, transparency, and sustainability to devices based on the interaction of light and matter (i.e., optoelectronic devices) or energy-related devices (e.g., solar cells, supercapacitors, or photo-electrochemical cells). A critically important requirement to realize the promise of hybrid materials for devices is to understand and control thin film deposition. Because hybrid materials are heterogeneous systems containing more than one component, thin-film deposition can be complicated compared to single component films. As a result, the co-deposition of two or more materials with different properties to synthesize a hybrid film with pre-determined functionality is a technological challenge within thin-film engineering. I will describe my research program that investigates hybrid thin film deposition using resonant infrared, matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (RIR-MAPLE) to control structure and properties and to improve the performance of optoelectronic and energy-related devices. I will also reflect on my path to a career in academia and the lessons I have learned along the way.

Bio

Adrienne D. Stiff-Roberts is Jeffrey N. Vinik Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University, where she is also the Director of Graduate Studies for the University Program in Materials Science and Engineering. Her current research interests include organic and hybrid thin-film deposition by resonant-infrared matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (RIR-MAPLE); materials characterization of organic and hybrid thin films; and the design, fabrication, and characterization of organic and hybrid optoelectronic devices, especially infrared photodetectors, photovoltaic solar cells, and multi-functional sensors. Dr. Stiff-Roberts received both the B.S. degree in physics from Spelman College and the B.E.E. degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1999. She received an M.S.E. in electrical engineering and a Ph.D. in applied physics in 2001 and 2004, respectively, from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Stiff-Roberts is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2006), the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award (2007), the IEEE Early Career Award in Nanotechnology of the Nanotechnology Council (2009), and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2009).

The majority of the population will experience low back pain in their lifetime. Degeneration of the intervertebral disc is highly correlated with low back pain, however, not all disc degeneration is painful. One of the most common forms of low back pain is disc-associated low back pain in which pain originates from intervertebral disc. In disc-associated low back pain, nerve fibers penetrate the previously aneural disc, where they are then thought to be stimulated by the harsh catabolic environment. Repetitive stimulation of these nerve fibers can cause sensitization and chronic pain. The overarching goal of our work is to engineer biomaterials that target these two key areas of disc-associated low back pain: nerve growth and stimulation. Current clinical treatments for chronic low back pain have limited efficacy or are highly invasive. The majority of research to date focuses on regenerating a young healthy disc. We believe our approach to target nerve growth and stimulation independent of disc regeneration has the potential shift the paradigm in the treatment of low back pain.
