ISR Insights Speaker Series - School Mental Health in the Detroit Public Schools Community District

August 25, 11am EST: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98456054707
Robin Jacob, PhD, Co-Director Youth Policy Lab
Elizabeth Koschmann, PhD, TRAILS Program Director

In recent years, rates of child and adolescent mental illness have skyrocketed. Nearly half of adolescents in the United States will experience symptoms of a mental illness before age 18, and one in five will be severely impaired by their symptoms. Among youth ages 10-24, suicide has become the second leading cause of death, killing almost 8,000 young people annually. These problems may be acerbated in urban, high poverty schools. There is evidence of higher rates of both mental illness and self-injury and suicidal behavior in communities of color which is hypothesized to reflect the impact of systemic racism, as well as significant racial disparities in access to high quality health and mental health care. Schools are uniquely positioned to identify and respond to students’ mental health care needs, and to reduce widespread inequities in access to effective prevention and early intervention services. However, only limited data is available on the prevalence and pattern of mental health challenges in urban schools or about the school or district resources available to address those challenges.

This study presents data collected as part of a partnership between TRAILS (Transforming Research into Action to Improve the Lives of Students), the Youth Policy Lab, and the Detroit Public Schools Community District. In 2019, our study team collected survey data from nearly 3,500 DPSCD teachers, administrators, school staff, almost 11,000 students, and 800 families. In this talk, Drs. Robin Jacob and Elizabeth Koschmann will share findings on (1) the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and exposure to traumatic events among students, (2) the degree to which these are associated with school engagement, absences, and other behaviors, and (3) the challenges staff and district administrators face in providing mental health services for their students.

This webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.

Who Do We Choose To Be? Facing Reality, Claiming Leadership, and Restoring Sanity by Margaret Wheatley (September 22, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/75542 75542-19519141@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

The focus of this class is the title book by Meg Wheatley. It offers wisdom that motivates and inspires us to local action on important issues. Some of the central questions raised by the book are: what does it take to lead an “island of sanity” and is it possible to create protection from the wild irrationality raging about us? The book refers to “warrior leaders in local spaces, offering best service wherever opportunities present themselves.” Know that this is heavy material and that each session will begin with a short mindfulness meditation.

Author Meg Wheatley has been illuminating issues of living and leadership for over 40 years. Instructor Bernadette Beach has created and offers professional development for nurses. She has also presented mindfulness courses and training for 20 years. Instructor Barbara Cherem has been creating curricula and teaching in the educational leadership program at UM-Flint for 15 years. She has been an educational leader for several decades.

The study group will be held on Tuesdays from September 22 through October 20. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.”

Black College Student Mental Health: What institutions need to know and do to support healing and thriving in a time of racial crisis (November 5, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78024 78024-19955553@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 5, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: LSA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Along with academic impacts, college contexts can serve to support or challenge students’ personal development and well-being in important ways. Increasingly, researchers and higher education institutions are paying attention to college student mental health, but less of this focus has considered the specific contextual experiences, challenges, and supports relevant to Black students’ mental health as they enter and navigate predominantly White institutions (PWI). College student research shows that, along with the social and academic challenges of college experienced by most/all students, Black students routinely report negative race-related experiences in their PWI settings - microaggressions and discrimination; biased stereotype-based treatment, low expectations; and both isolation/exclusion and hypervisibility (over-monitoring as suspicious or dangerous) due to race. Black students’ racially marginalizing experiences are sometimes tied to students’ multiple identities (e.g., their race along with their ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientations, among other identities). Such devaluing experiences have been linked to poorer academic achievement and persistence outcomes, but these experiences likely function to undermine mental health as well.

Now more than ever, a focus on Black college student mental health is critical. In 2020, Black students are entering their college campuses (in-person or remotely) after a summer of widespread protests against anti-Black police violence and systemic racism, sparked by public witnessing of videos depicting murders and brutalizing of Black Americans by police. Many Black students are also coming from communities disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and with the knowledge that these differential impacts are directly and indirectly due to systemic racism. Thus, while Black students bring many personal and cultural strengths to their campuses that can be leveraged to support their positive college adjustment, they also experience unique challenges and vulnerabilities due to racism - both on their campuses and in the broader society - that can undermine their well-being and thriving on campus. Higher education must be accountable in understanding Black student experiences and, importantly, acting on this knowledge to meet the goals of supporting and serving all students equitably.

This webinar will feature the research of three scholars actively engaged in research on the positive mental health of Black college students. All are grant recipients of the 2020 National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) Pop-Up Grant program cycle, themed around Mental Health among Marginalized Communities, and co-sponsored in partnership with The Steve Fund. Each scholar will share research findings yielded from their grant projects and outline specific implications and recommendations for research and action.

Moderator/Facilitator:

· Tabbye Chavous, *NCID Director and Professor of Psychology and Education, University of Michigan*

Panelists:

· Seanna Leath, *Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Virginia*

“The Weight of Honor” is the first comprehensive documentary to chronicle the lives of families caring for their
catastrophically wounded returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Over the course of five years, the film follows the arc of what
happens when some of America's best and strongest volunteer to protect our nation, but return home physically and emotionally
broken and disillusioned. What happens when they return is not only a personal journey but also that of their family caregivers who
have no training other than the love for their wounded. Our military does not prepare families for the return of a wounded warrior.
“The Weight of Honor” tells their stories of strength, exhaustion, conflict, and even humor as they chart a course through the
unknown

The University Psychological Clinic is offering a Saturday session of the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) group.

Join the Psych Clinic for an eight-week MBCT group starting on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021. The MBCT group serves as treatment for people with depression as well as other mental health conditions. While the chemical and physical aspects of depression and other mental health disorders are far more complex than just feeling down, current research supports a cognitive approach as a way to change patterns of brain functioning and build resilience in people struggling with chronic depression.

This program uses a combination of cognitive therapy and mindfulness to help participants form new, healthier modes of thought. MBCT initiates a cognitive change that helps clients move past events that have the potential to trigger relapse. Participants learn how to view their thoughts without judgment.

If you are interested in attending or referring a potential group participant, please contact the Psychological Clinic to begin the process. Call (734) 764-3471 to schedule a screening. Alternately, you can contact the clinic through the website form, found here: https://mari.umich.edu/psych-clinic/contact-us.

If you missed the start of this session or are interested in a group at a different time or on a different day, please contact us! We have ongoing groups and can organize new sessions based on demand.

Get ready for this #FunnyAsHAIL wellness break with The Magic of Eric Jones. Take a study and work break and prepare to be amazed as he shares his life-changing pandemic story and takes us on an exciting journey navigating this year's racial political challenges as a showman in today’s climate. This wellness break is free and open to all UM students, staff and faculty. Register: https://myumi.ch/2DbVG

From his start performing simple coin tricks on the streets of Philly, to America’s Got Talent (Semi-Finalist), Penn and Teller (he beat them), and Masters of Illusion, Eric did it all with a few coins and these brilliantly crafted routines. Eric teaches methods, nuances and theory for creating magic that resonates deeply with the people watching it. He gives you coin magic that, for the first time ever, translates as well on stage as it does in person. Whether it’s an audience of 1 person or 1 million, he teaches the skills required to take your coin magic to a level you never thought.

#FunnyAsHAIL is sponsored by the student organizations Here Earning a Destiny (H.E.A.D.S) and Support for Incoming Black Students (S.I.B.S.) along with U-M Library and in partnership with the My Brothers Empowerment Series.

*This event will not be recorded.

For the best experience please be sure to;
1. Have the latest version of Zoom installed on their device.
2. Feel free to turn your cameras on so you can interact with Eric and participate in the show/ conversation.
3. Be sure to watch in speaker view.
4. Eric will teach a magic trick with a regular deck of cards. If you want to follow along, be sure to have a deck near you. It doesn't have to be a full/complete deck.
5. Try to watch from a laptop or desktop. It is preferred over mobile devices for a magic show so you don't miss a THING!

Stress and Health in Context: The Role of Negative Relationships
Wednesday, April 28, 1pm EDT: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98477632981

A burgeoning literature shows social ties are integral for health and survival. Kira Birditt‘s program of research focuses on negative aspects of relationships including the extent to which they are irritating, critical, or demanding. In this talk she will discuss the findings from her program of research showing that: 1) There is a great deal of variability in negative aspects of relationships within and between individuals, 2) Negative aspects of relationships have important implications for health that often vary by the context of stress, and 3) The implications of relationships and stress vary race/ethnicity. She will also discuss the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations program that she leads and directions for future research.

Kira Birditt earned a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University and B.A. and M.S. degrees in Psychology from Western Washington University. She serves as a Research Associate Professor at the Survey Research Center and the Director of the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations Program. She is currently PI on three R01 projects funded by NIA examining: 1) racial health disparities in stress, social ties and health, 2) racial inequities in health among Alzheimer’s caregivers, and 3) alcohol use and cardiovascular health among aging couples.

This webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.
