Research shows that when students worry about fulfilling a negative stereotype related to certain social identities, it can hurt their learning (a phenomenon known as stereotype threat). Research also shows that an instructor’s beliefs about their own and their students’ intelligence and ability impact the classroom environment. In this interactive session, participants will reflect on instructor and student social identities and learn about strategies for mitigating stereotype threat and encouraging a growth mindset for students in their classes.

Training (for) Better Presentations is aimed at providing Michigan Engineering graduate students the opportunity to enhance their scientific communication skills, so they can learn to effectively convey the "big picture" value of their research to a diverse audience. It also aims to engage a dialog of science and engineering research among graduate students across the entire College of Engineering.

Intended as "teaching through practice" event, each session is structured to have student speakers (2-3 per session) make a timed (15-20 min) presentation on their graduate research to a broad engineering audience and a communications expert panel (3-4 panelists). Our expert panelists will provide constructive feedback to the speakers (and the audience), highlighting the positive aspects of each presentation and also indicating opportunities for improvement. This structure will allow for the speakers to receive specific feedback on their communication skills, while also providing the audience with generalized guidelines for good scientific communication.

Starting mid-February and leading up to June, we will be organizing multiple sessions for this event, and we invite you to participate. The sessions will be held on Saturday mornings (9am - 11am), and will be scheduled to occur once every 2-3 weeks. Breakfast and coffee will be provided!

If you are interested in participating as a speaker, please indicate your availability on the "Speaker sign up" form and the planning committee will follow up with you for scheduling. If you are interested in participating as an audience member, please sign up through our TBP website on the "Audience sign up" link. Note: you be prompted to create a guest profile in order to sign-up as an audience member.

We look forward to your participation!

Abstract: The current resurgence of artificial intelligence is due to advances in deep learning. Systems based on deep learning now exceed human capability in speech recognition, object classification, and playing games like Go. Deep learning has been enabled by powerful, efficient computing hardware. The algorithms used have been around since the 1980s, but it has only been in the last few years - when powerful GPUs became available to train networks - that the technology has become practical. This talk will review the current state of deep learning and describe recent research on making these systems more efficient.

Interested in recruiting for a consulting position but unfamiliar with the case interview format? This workshop, brought to you by Accenture, will be an opportunity for you to learn more about the case interviews that consulting firms use today. The presentation will cover a range of topics including the different formats of cases, common questions and frameworks, and tips on how to prepare. There is no "right" answer to the case. Firms are interested in how clearly you define the problem, how logically you structure your analysis, and how well you communicate your thoughts.

For most of the workshop, two Engineering seniors who have recruited and/or interned in consulting will demonstrate an actual case interview. There will be ample time for questions.

Food will be provided. Space is limited, please register under the Events section of Engineering Careers if planning to attend. This event is co-hosted by the Engineering Career Resource Center.

Mike O’Connell is the founder and President of The Woodmar Group, a California based winery. The Woodmar Group started in 2004 in Napa, California with the focus of using Napa Valley winemaking skills to produce wines that retail in the $10 – $15 price point. The brands include Grayson Cellars, Block Nine, Five Rows, Freelander, Ghostrunner and Hanging Vine and are sold into 50 states and 25 countries. Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate gave Grayson wines Best Buy ratings for eleven consecutive releases. The company is run by Mike and his wife and is one of the larger family owned wineries in the United States. The company is named in tribute to Woodmar Country Club, a now defunct golf course in Mike’s native Indiana where he spent countless hours learning life’s lessons playing golf. Prior to founding The Woodmar Group, Mike ran legendary Indy car driver Mario Andretti’s winery, Andretti Winery, in Napa California where he grew sales 100% in three years. The turn-around plan included renegotiating contracts, reducing the product line, improving product quality, redesigning packaging and building a national sales force.

Location: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building
Organized By: Tau Beta Pi

**Note change of location**
We are excited to announce the launch of TBP Graduate Student Speaker Series: Training (for) Better Presentations organized by Tau Beta Pi for the College of Engineering, a pilot professional development event funded by the College of Engineering and the Office of Student Affairs.

MIPSE Seminar | Emerging Research Topics in Plasma Science: Plasma-control of Electromagnetic Waves and High Energy Density Plasma Jets and Their Interactions (March 28, 2018 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/47480 47480-10929759@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 28, 2018 3:30pm
Location: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Plasma Science and Engineering (MIPSE)

This presentation will focus on two emerging areas of plasma science research at Stanford. The first part of will provide an overview of recent work at Stanford and of a Stanford-led multi-university effort on the integration of plasmas into metamaterials and photonic crystals for the control of electromagnetic waves in the centimeter – millimeter range of the spectrum. Plasmas, because of their unusual dielectric constant, provide a means of reconfiguring otherwise passive microwave photonic and plasmonic devices that are used to filter, switch, or redirect electromagnetic waves. The second part will focus on recent studies of high energy density plasmas and the formation of hypervelocity plasma jets of extreme density (1018 cm-3) and temperature (50-100 eV). The interactions of these jets with surfaces generate an extreme heat flux (>10 GW/m2) and can serve as simulators of disruptions that occur in magnetic confinement fusion reactors. We will describe efforts at characterizing the jet structure including first videography of unsteady dynamics, and also recent measurements of surface heat deposition rates.

Mark A. Cappelli is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, and co-Director of the Engineering Physics Major. He received his B.Sc. degree in Physics from McGill University, and his M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in Aerospace Sciences. The focus of his Ph.D. dissertation involved the formation of high density plasma channels to facilitate the propagation of ion beams to targets in light-ion beam fusion. He joined the Stanford faculty in 1987. At Stanford, he has studied the applications of plasmas to space propulsion, materials synthesis and processing, combustion, aerodynamics, and most recently, to the control of electromagnetic waves.

Abstract

Molecular-Scale Modeling of Polymer-Nanoparticle Composites
The incorporation of nanoparticles (NPs) into polymers constitutes a powerful strategy for enhancing their thermomechanical properties and for introducing new optical, electrical, and magnetic functionalities into the polymers. This talk reviews our ongoing efforts in modeling the mesoscale morphology, assembly mechanisms, and thermomechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites. I will begin by discussing Monte Carlo simulations of polymer-grafted shaped NPs to elucidate the role played by polymer grafts in dictating the free-energy landscape, assembly pathway, and relative orientation of the NPs in their higher-order aggregates. These results have led to the development of a novel self-assembly strategy for fabricating tunable plasmonic nanojunctions within a polymer thin film. Next, I will describe an approach involving highthroughput quantitative image analysis and lattice models for inferring dynamic parameters of NP assembly from spatially and temporally disjointed images of composites. Application to shaped, metallic NPs reveals a cluster-cluster aggregation mechanism of assembly, where the NPs and their clusters diffuse in a Stokes-Einstein manner and stick with a probability that depends on their size and geometry as well as molecular weight of the surrounding polymer. Finally, I will discuss the application of atomistic and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations in predicting thermomechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites, especially viscoelastic behavior in the context of shock-mitigation materials, and mechanical flexibility and stability in the context of flexible organic semiconductors.

MIPSE Seminar | Plasma Treatment of Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Ion Exchange Brine Solutions: Reactor Design Challenges and Physicochemical Processes at the Plasma-liquid Interface (April 4, 2018 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/47482 47482-10929761@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 4, 2018 3:30pm
Location: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Plasma Science and Engineering (MIPSE)

Plasma-based water treatment (PWT) uses electrical discharges formed in contact with or in the vicinity of water to degrade chemicals in contaminated water. Plasma in these conditions is capable of producing a diverse range of highly reactive species with low energy input without chemical additives, which makes PWT a promising treatment technology. PWT has not yet proven to be viable, largely due to a lack of knowledge for designing effective plasma reactors and targeting appropriate applications. We have developed a bench-scale PWT process to treat perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in groundwater with high enough efficiency to rival leading technologies. A scaled-up continuous-flow prototype demonstrated PFASs degradation rates far exceeding those of the bench system. A more practical solution for PWT of high flowrates of PFAS-containing water is to combine it with an ion exchange (IX) system wherein the plasma treats the IX regeneration brine, a complex chemical mixture of PFASs, methanol, and sodium chloride. In this talk development of PWT systems will be discussed, correlating bulk liquid transport with the plasma-liquid interface dynamics using analytical measurements and fluid dynamics modeling.

Thagard received her BS in chemical engineering from the U. of Zagreb in Croatia and her Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Florida State U. Before coming to Clarkson, Thagard held post-doctoral appointments at Toyohashi U. of Technology in Japan and at Colorado State U. Her expertise is in electrical discharge plasma processes with a focus on theoretical and experimental investigations of fundamental plasma chemistry in single and multiphase plasma environments. Her research group is pursuing national and international interdisciplinary projects, including: (i) Development of chemical reactors for plasma-assisted water treatment, (ii) Plasma sterilization and food decontamination, and (iii) Plasma-assisted conversion of liquid fuels into hydrogen-rich gas. Thagard has coauthored 35 journal articles, three book chapters, and three patents. Her work has been funded by NSF, EPA, NY Pollution Prevention Institute and United States Air Force. Thagard serves on the Editorial Board of Plasma Chem. Plasma Proc.

MIPSE Seminar | Electron Emission from Two-Dimensional Novel Materials and Applications (April 11, 2018 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/48784 48784-11306114@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 11, 2018 3:30pm
Location: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Plasma Science and Engineering (MIPSE)

Electron emission from a material through an interface to vacuum or other materials is a fundamental process in cathodes, diodes, ionization and electrical contact. Depending on the energy used to produce electron emission, it can be broadly characterized into 3 processes: thermionic emission TE (thermal energy), field emission FE (quantum tunneling) and photoemission PE (photon absorption or optical tunneling). Regardless of the emission mechanism, the emission current density may become saturated – space charge limited emission (SCLE). Basic models for these processes (TE, PE, PE, SCLE) have been captured in the Richardson law, Child-Langmuir (CL) law, Fowler-Nordheim (FN) law, and the Keldysh model. With the development of two-dimensional (2D) atomic scale materials, these classical laws may require revision to account for new material properties, as well as novel operating regimes in nanometer dimensions and ultrashort time scales. In this talk, self-consistent electron emission models will be presented, with applications to 2D materials such as graphene. These new models exhibit smooth transitions to the classical models while providing new scaling laws that can be included into numerical codes. These new models provide better agreement with experimental results. A selection of applications of these models to engineering product development in energy harvesting, electronics and photonics will also be presented.

Lay Kee (Ricky) Ang received his BS in 1994 from National Tsing Hua Univ., Taiwan, and his MS & PhD from U. Michigan (1996, 1999). He is currently a professor under the Engineering Product Development pillar, Singapore Univ. of Technology and Design (SUTD), and the Ng Teng Fong chair Professor under the SUTD–ZJU (Zhejiang University) IDEA (Innovation, Design and Entrepreneurship Alliance). Before joining SUTD, he was with the Nanyang Technological Univ., Singapore (2002-11), and with Los Alamos National Laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow (1999-2001). His research interests are in the formulation of basic scaling laws for device physics, focusing on novel materials and nano-structures. In applied mathematics, he is applying fractional calculus to analyze complicated and disordered systems. His research is funded by Singapore (MOE, ASTAR, SUTD) and USA (AFOSR and ONRG).

THE CAPTAIN RALPH R. AND FLORENCE PEACHMAN LECTURE

presented by Jørgen Juncher Jensen, Professor Emeritus, DTU Mechanical Engineering

Intact Stability of Ships
A new Intact Stability Code, the so-called Second Generation of Intact Stability Criteria, is currently under development and validation by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The criteria are separated into five failure modes, each of which is analyzed by two vulnerability levels and, if needed, a direct numerical simulation. Preliminary calculations are carried out by many organizations and significant inconsistencies have been found between the two vulnerability levels especially for dead ship conditions and parametric roll, e.g. Schrøter et al. (2017) where 17 ships are analyzed using the full matrix of operational draughts, trims and GM values.

Jørgen Juncher Jensen received his PhD in solid mechanics from the Technical University (DTU) of Denmark 1975. In 1974 he joined the Department of Ocean Engineering at DTU as assistant professor and later, in 1998, as Professor in Maritime Hydrodynamics. He became also Adjunct Professor at NTNU in 2014. His research interests are mainly wave loads on ships and offshore structures with focus on statistical methods for non-linear systems. He received the Dr. Techn. degree for this work in 1995. His main focus today is on wave-induced responses of ships and much of the research is done within the theory of conditional stochastic processes. He has been involved in several EU sponsored projects as well as national projects and IMO work on probabilistic damage stability of ships.

See how Michigan Engineering students are designing solutions to our world's challenges.

The College of Engineering Design Expo is held twice a year to provide a public forum for engineering students to demonstrate applications of their studies to real-life needs. Students gain valuable experience by presenting their work.

Through this venue, the greater University community and general public has the opportunity to learn how Michigan's students are contributing in significant ways to solving major technology challenges across various disciplines.

These student projects consist of internal University of Michigan projects, non-profit community projects, and industry-sponsored projects. Most of these projects are part of Senior Design Project Courses, but other project groups are welcome and encouraged to participate.

The goal of the Undergraduate Engineering Office is to have participation from all departments within the College of Engineering (and eventually across university schools and colleges) to promote cross-disciplinary cooperation as well as high school outreach.

Industry sponsors have been a large part of promoting this within the college through sponsorship of projects and financial support of the event itself.

The Winter 2018 Design Expo is sponsored by Stryker.

This event is held in multiple North Campus locations including the Duderstadt Center, Bob & Betty Beyster Building, Pierpont Commons, EECS Building, Dow Building, G.G. Brown Building, and Chrysler Center.

For more information, contact Lindsey Dowswell in the Multidisciplinary Design Program office at lindsd@umich.edu or (734) 763-0818.

**Note change of location**
We are excited to announce the launch of TBP Graduate Student Speaker Series: Training (for) Better Presentations organized by Tau Beta Pi for the College of Engineering, a pilot professional development event funded by the College of Engineering and the Office of Student Affairs.

Presented by Emily A. Carter, Princeton University
Lecture Title: "Mechanisms for Sustainable Fuel and Chemical Production from First Principles"

Abstract

Someday the world’s liquid fuels needed for ships and airplanes will come from sustainable sources and low-energy processing. We are far from that day. While that fact is unfortunate, it opens up exciting opportunities for researchers from many different fields to work together to realize that vision. I will report on some of my research group’s contributions toward this goal, as we develop and apply quantum mechanics-based simulation methods to unravel mechanisms associated with (photo) electrochemical water oxidation and carbon dioxide reduction at semiconductor electrodes and plasmon-catalyzed bond breaking over metal nanoparticles. The talk will focus primarily on CO2 photoelectroreduction to fuel precursors but will also outline the potential for plasmonic catalysis to replace, e.g., the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. This latter work illustrates the potential to develop a non-thermal, low-pressure, visible-light-based approach to ammonia synthesis and hence to sustainable fertilizer production.

TBP Grad Student Speaker Series: Training (for) Better Presentations (May 5, 2018 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/49925 49925-11577490@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, May 5, 2018 9:00am

Location: Gerald Ford Library
Organized By: Electrical and Computer Engineering

The annual International Conference for Advanced Neurotechnology (ICAN) brings together engineers and neuroscientists to review recent technological advancements in neurotechnology and neuroscience and to define the direction of the field in the generation and application of next-generation tools to advance neuroscience and enhance translation of technology to the science community.

Significant advances have occurred to address the problem of scaling neuroscience investigative tools to interface with neuronal circuits and in defining the properties of elemental cell types that comprise these circuits. Yet, these advances have not fully met the complexity, or fully addressed the cellular and network features of the CNS required to accelerate our understanding of the brain.

TBP Grad Student Speaker Series: Training (for) Better Presentations (June 16, 2018 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/49925 49925-11577492@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, June 16, 2018 9:00am

Constrained and Spectral-Spatial RF Pulse Design for Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a critical tool for modern medicine, providing a non-invasive glimpse inside the human body with excellent soft tissue contrast and no ionizing radiation. The radio frequency (RF) pulse in an MRI acquisition is integral to producing an image and can be tailored to particular applications. This thesis focuses on the design of RF pulses and explores the MRI physics, convex optimization problems, and experimental methodologies behind doing so.

First, we introduce constrained RF pulse design which enables efficient RF pulse design with meaningful, physical constraints such as peak RF amplitude and integrated RF power. We explore constrained RF pulse design for simultaneous multislice imaging, a powerful tool for accelerating MRI and combatting notoriously long acquisition times. Compared to a conventional simultaneous multislice pulse designed without constraints, our constrained pulses achieved lower magnitude normalized root mean squared error (NRMSE) for an equivalent RF pulse length, or alternatively, the same NRMSE for a shorter pulse length. Constrained RF pulse design forms a basis for the rest of the dissertation.

Secondly, we describe a special class of RF pulses, “prewinding pulses”, that help correct for intravoxel dephasing due to magnetic field inhomogeneity, that can lead to signal loss. We propose a spectral-spatial prewinding pulse that leverages a larger effective recovery bandwidth than equivalent, purely spectral pulses. In an in vivo experiment imaging the brain of a human volunteer, we designed spectral-spatial pulses with a complex NMRSE of 0.18, which is significantly improved from the complex NRMSE of 0.54 in the purely spectral pulse for the same experiment.

Finally, we consider a slab-selective prewinding pulse, that extends spectral and spectral-spatial prewinding pulses to a common 3D imaging method. Here we integrate optimal control optimization to further improve the slab-selective spectral pulse design and see an in vivo improvement of excitation NRMSE from 0.40 to 0.37 and a major reduction in mean residual magnetization magnitude after a tip-up pulse from 0.18 to 0.02 when adding optimal control. This method has the potential to connect prewinding pulse design from the MRI physicist engineering workspace to a clinical application.

In summary, we show that constrained RF pulse design provides an efficient way of improving MRI in terms of acquisition speed (via multislice imaging) and image quality (via signal recovery).

The Effects of Mechanical Forces on Human Embryonic Stem Cell Behavior

The development of an organism from a zygote into a fully functional 3D individual is a process in which a strong coupling of morphogens and mechanical forces is coordinated with embryo shape. During development, cells communicate with each other through cell-cell junctions and with their microenvironment via mechanical cues to regulate cell fate, re-organize the extracellular matrix, and guide developmental process. Most studies on human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) focused on how external soluble factors including growth factors and small inhibitors, gene and protein expression, and signaling pathways to maintain stemness or initiate differentiation of these cells. A various array of environmental factors including the effect of geometry and mechanical properties of extracellular matrix on stem cells contributes to altering stem cell fate. Recently, increasing evidence has revealed the importance of mechanical factors in affecting migration, proliferation and stem cell differentiation in vitro.

In this dissertation, we focus on the development and application of novel bioengineering approaches to understand the effects of mechanical forces on hESC behaviors and the directed differentiation of hESCs. Specifically, by employing a microfluidic device to induce controlled and regulated forces that apply global mechanical forces to adherent hESCs, we find that uniaxial substrate stretching disrupts the pluripotency circuit and initiates the exit of transcription factors, Nanog and Oct4, from the nucleus into the cytoplasm via a nuclear export protein (CRM1) as early as 30 min after stretch application and for 2 hours on a flexible substrate coated with Matrigel, and is not reliant on exogenous soluble factors. In order to pinpoint to the receptors responsible for mechanical sensing, we employ a novel technique, acoustic tweezing cytometery (ATC), that utilizes ultrasound pulses to actuate functionalized microbubbles targeted to integrin in order to apply cyclic strain to hESCs. We find that ATC-mediated cyclic forces applied for 30 min induced immediate global responses in the colony, including increased contractile force, enhanced calcium activity, as well as decreased nuclear expression of pluripotency transcription factors Oct4 and Nanog, leading to rapid differentiation and characteristic epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) events that depend on focal adhesion kinase activation and cytoskeleton tension. These results reveal a unique, rapid mechanoresponsiveness and community behavior of hESCs to integrin-targeted cyclic forces. Furthermore, we demonstrate an integrative mechanotransduction that induced neural rosette formation of hESCs via the application of ATC and induction medium. We observe upregulation of Pax6 and Sox1 in as early as 6 hours, following by neural rosettes formation in 48 hours, which is much faster compared to the typical 10-15 days needed with conventional neural rosettes formation protocols.

Together, this dissertation presents novel findings and insights regarding the effects of external mechanical forces on hESCs. Such information may help elucidate the mechanobiology of hESCs, and thus advance our knowledge of human embryogenesis, regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering.

Humans must frequently adapt their posture to prevent loss of balance. Such balance control requires complex, precisely-timed coordination among sensory input, neural processing, and motor output. Despite its importance, our current understanding of cortical involvement during balance control remains limited by traditional neuroimaging methods, which are stationary and have poor time resolution. High-density electroencephalography (EEG), combined with independent component analysis, has become a promising tool for recording cortical dynamics during balance perturbations due to its portability and high temporal resolution. Additionally, recent improvements in immersive virtual reality headsets may provide new rehabilitative paradigms, but the effects of virtual reality on balance and cortical function remain poorly understood.

In my first study, I recorded high-density EEG from healthy, young adult subjects as they walked along a beam with and without virtual reality high heights exposure. While virtual high heights did induce stress, the use of virtual reality during the task increased performance errors and EEG measures of cognitive loading compared to real-world viewing without a headset. In my second study, I collected high-density EEG from healthy young adults as they walked along a treadmill-mounted balance beam to determine the effect of a transient visual perturbation on training in virtual reality. Subjects in the perturbations group improved comparably to those that trained without virtual reality, indicating that the perturbation helped subjects overcome the negative effects of virtual reality on motor learning. The perturbation primarily elicited a cognitive change. In my third study, healthy, young adult EEG was recorded during physical pull and visual rotation perturbations to tandem walking and tandem standing. I found similar electrocortical patterns for both perturbation types, but different cortical areas were involved for each. In my fourth study, I used a phantom head to validate EEG connectivity methods based on Granger causality in a real-world environment. In general, connectivity measures could determine the underlying connections, but many were susceptible to high-frequency false positives. Using data from my third study, my fifth study analyzed corticomuscular connectivity patterns following sensorimotor balance perturbations. I found strong occipito-parietal connections regardless of perturbation type, along with evidence of direct muscular control from the supplementary motor area during the standing perturbation response.

Taken together, the work presented in this dissertation greatly expands upon the current knowledge of cortical processing during sensorimotor balance perturbations and the effect of such perturbations on short-term motor learning, providing multiple avenues for future exploration.

Mobile brain and body imaging (MoBI) presents new and promising methods for moving traditional research studies out of a controlled laboratory and into the real world. Most current neuroimaging techniques require subjects to be stationary in laboratory settings because of both hardware and software limitations. Recent developments in mobile brain imaging have utilized Electroencephalography (EEG) in conjunction with advanced signal processing techniques such as Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to overcome these obstacles and study humans doing complex tasks in non-traditional environments. In my first study, I used high density EEG to examine the cortical dynamics of subjects walking on a split-belt treadmill with legs moving independently of each other at different speeds to investigate how humans adapt to novel perturbations. I found significantly increased low and high frequency spectral power across all sensorimotor and parietal neural sources during split-belt adaptation compared to normal walking, which provides insight into the brain areas and patterns used to accommodate locomotor adaptation. In my second study I combined multi-modal sensing and biometric devices including EEG, eye tracking, heart rate, accelerometers, and salivary cortisol into a portable setup that subjects wore indoors on a treadmill using virtual reality as well as outdoors in a public arboretum. Subjects walked for 1 hour each indoors and outdoors while completing a free viewing visual search oddball task in virtual reality and in real life. I reported on the methods for how to set this experiment up, synchronize all data, and standardize the data in order to make it usable as an open access dataset that has been made available to the public online. My third study used this data set to examine the P300 event-related potential response during both indoors in virtual reality and outdoors in the arboretum. I found a significantly increased P300 amplitude response across the centro-parietal electrodes that distinguished target flags from distractor flags during visual search for both indoor and outdoor environments. And finally, for my fourth study I used the same data set to look at the behavioral and neural correlates associated with gait dynamics when subjects walked indoors on a treadmill vs outdoors in variable terrain while also doing the visual search task. I found significant EEG power differences across multiple neural sources that showed increased spectral fluctuations throughout the gait cycle when subjects walked outdoors compared to indoors on a treadmill.

The collective studies in this dissertation present new ways of using mobile brain and body imaging devices to expand our knowledge of the neural dynamics involved in humans moving in complex ways and in variable environments outside of traditional laboratories.
