Location: Center for the Education of Women
Organized By: CEW+

Be sure you’re here by 12:15 to be entered into a drawing to win a CEW+ swag bag!

It’s the end of the semester and CEW+ is providing space (and food!) to help you finish the year off strong. Students are invited to drop in and take advantage of our study spaces, self-care activities, and healthy snacks. There will also be a social hour with lunch from 12:30-1:30 PM (RSVP requested for planning purposes).

We will also be offering two guided opportunities to practice mindfulness meditation at 10:30 and 1:30. Based on research from multiple sources, mindfulness is considered a key skill that can be utilized to reduce stress and induce a state of relaxation. Some of the many benefits of practicing mindfulness during finals are, higher brain functioning, increased attention and focus, increased clarity in thinking and perception, lowered anxiety levels, and better sleep. Mindfulness is a skill that can be learned and most effective when practiced on a regular basis. Come see how 15 minutes can help you make the most of your study time!

Feel free to drop in and socialize with other students or stay all day to get some work done. Either way, CEW+ is here to support you!

Bring friends to study together in our quiet spaces, or just hang out and meet other students from different departments in relaxing and welcoming spaces throughout the Center. Children are welcome with a designated child-friendly study space.

If you would like to attend the lunch, please RSVP. No registration is otherwise needed to drop in.

Breathing regulation is one of the key practices within the Yoga discipline. Often called Pranayama or Yogic breathing this practice is gaining increasing importance in the Western world. The availability of ancient literature and modern scientific evidence is sparse on this subtopic of Yoga. Dr. Sundar Balasubramanian is a pioneer in the area of salivary biomarkers combining Pranayama practice. He has been researching techniques related to Pranayama from the ancient and unique Siddha tradition. He has published scientific research papers and book on Thirumanthiram, written by Saint Thirumoolar. This workshop consisting of both theoretical and practical components is unique in combining ancient wisdom with modern science based on the teacher’s first-hand experience and research. The attendees will be able to,

1. Get acquainted with the ancient literary excerpts on Yogic breathing
2. Get to practice key breathing exercises from an ancient tradition
3. Understand the physiological, emotional and biological mechanisms of Pranayama based on the research work done by the presenter

BLI GLOBAL ACCESS OPPORTUNITY: Mindful Peace Leadership Experience in Japan (November 6, 2019 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/69105 69105-17244695@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 6, 2019 3:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Barger Leadership Institute

Central to peace leadership is a desire for inclusion and cohesion whereby individuals are enabled to live in liberty to their fullest potential, free from the oppression of powers who seek to wield dominance. Peace leadership, therefore, is focused on creating a positive peace, while including essential elements working against forces for violence and aggression, or negative peace (Galtung, 3).

A select group of 6-8 students will join BLI Director and Mindful Leadership Researcher Ram Mahalingam and BLI Academic Program Specialist and Mindful Cohort program manager, Elizabeth Rohr, on a 3-week, immersive peace leadership journey in Japan. Students will observe and learn about peace studies, mindfulness and contemplative practices with a focus on Japanese aesthetics to help build their leadership portfolio and promote peace, dignity, and sustainability in their personal, social and workplace domains.

Michigan Leadership Collaborative (MLC) Speaker Event: In a Distracted World, Solitude is Practice for Tomorrow’s Leaders
with Mike Erwin

Introduction by Saddi Washington, U-M Basketball Assistant Coach

The volume of our communication, and our unfettered access to information and other people, have made it more difficult than ever to focus. Despite this reality, there is another truth: Opportunities to focus are still all around us. But we must recognize them and believe that the benefit of focus, for yourself and the people you lead, is worth making it a priority in your life. In other words, before you can lead others, the first person you must lead is yourself.

MIKE ERWIN was born and raised in Syracuse, NY. He has dedicated his life to serving the nation---and empowering people to build positive relationships.

A 2002 graduate of The U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics, Mike was commissioned as an Intelligence Officer, deploying three times between 2004 and 2009. Following his third deployment, Mike attended the University of Michigan from 2009-2011, where he studied positive psychology and leadership under the tutelage of Drs. Chris Peterson and Nansook Park. He went on to serve as an Assistant Professor in Psychology & Leadership at West Point from 2011-2014.

While in graduate school in 2010, Mike founded a non-profit organization named Team Red, White & Blue (Team RWB). Team RWB’s mission is to enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their communities through physical and social activity.

Mike is the co-author of LEAD YOURSELF FIRST by Bloomsbury Press (2017). The book focuses on how solitude strengthens people’s ability to lead with clarity, balance and conviction. The book profiles leaders including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Winston Churchill and Jane Goodall, and how they used solitude in some of their most pivotal moments.

Currently, Mike is leading another non-profit organization that he co-founded in 2015: The Positivity Project. Its mission is to empower America’s youth to build positive relationships through a deeper understanding of positive psychology’s 24 character strengths. Currently partnered with over 625 schools in 24 different states, The Positivity Project is helping over 400,000 students to see the good in themselves---and in other people---which is giving them the foundation to build stronger relationships.

EVENT NOTE: Please enter the building at State and Hill, 735 S. State Street.

As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative, CEW+ holds regular mindful meditation sits on Wednesdays throughout the academic year. This week, CEW+ is partnering with the BLI as part of their Pause, Reflect, and Create series.

Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns. Come join a drop in, guided mindful meditation sit and practice being aware and fully present in the moment.

What if your ability to succeed in your classes was determined in part before you even stepped into the classroom? What is the one quality you need to overcome adversity academically and in life? This workshop will detail the research of Dr. Carol Dweck and her groundbreaking work on the concept of mindset. Students will learn how to abandon a debilitating fixed mindset in favor of a growth mindset, leading to success in areas they once considered too difficult. The workshop will also introduce students to the research of Dr. Angela Duckworth, and how a growth mindset can lead to the development of grit, an essential characteristic to overcoming our fear of failure.

The study and learning strategies students often bring to college are often insufficient to help them succeed at the university level. Particularly in challenging STEM courses, students can't simply memorize or cram their way to a good grade. This workshop will focus on the popular learning strategies to avoid, as well as the top three strategies you don't know but are shown by research to be the most effective for long-term learning.

Historically, transgender and non-binary identities have been viewed by the medical and mental health community as pathological. Although change has occurred, the cultural narratives around transgender and non-binary remain disparaging, disempowering, and marginalizing. Namely, that people with these identities are born in the wrong bodies. Transgender and non-binary people are not immune to internalizing these narratives which often lead to the development of shame and other mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, to name a few. The goal of this workshop is to utilize countercultural, body positive, and resiliency focused interventions to empower transgender and non binary college students to view their bodies and identities.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy has been clinically proven to be at least as effective as drugs for depression - in other words, it works! And it's not just for depression; it also works for people who are not depressed but who are struggling to keep up with the constant demands of this frantic world.
It promotes the kind of happiness and peace that gets into our bones. Mindfulness reveals a set of simple yet powerful practices that help break the cycle of anxiety, stress, unhappiness, and exhaustion.
We're going to be using the book "Mindfulness: An Eight-Week Plan for Finding Peace in a Frantic World" by Mark Williams and Danny Pennman.
This will be a six-week program. The class will be partly lecture, but you can look forward to lively discussions.
Mike Murray, a Clinical Psychologist, has taught mindfulness classes for OLLI for over ten years. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Wednesdays February 5 through March 11.

Globally, nationally, locally—it is not hard to see that the world needs more compassionate leadership. But how do we do it? We are all leaders, and can learn to be more compassionate! Leading with compassion requires us to be aware of both the unique contributions of each person as well as what we all share as humans. Compassion goes beyond empathy to move us to relieve and prevent the suffering of others. Compassionate leaders inspire and energize others, attract collaboration and creativity, increase trust, make wiser choices. They cultivate the awareness, justice, inclusivity, and kindness we need to guide our actions as a society.

This evening will address the meaning and importance of compassionate leadership in the year 2020 and lead short but effective practices in developing these capacities.

CEW+Inspire Workshop: Who Speaks for Seeds? Respectful Listening – Meaningful Actions (February 27, 2020 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/69928 69928-17483065@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 27, 2020 2:00pm
Location: Center for the Education of Women
Organized By: CEW+

The workshop is from 2-3:30, followed by a networking reception until 4:00.

The concept of Rematriation as Reconciliation is simple. It is the return of living seeds to their Community of Origin. But issues of trust soon emerge. Who is involved in conceptually framing and prioritizing critical thought and action? Who/what Community Members have both standing and agency to be engaged—ethically, spiritually, and legally? Who speaks for Indigenous Nation’s seeds in museum diaspora? What is “listening” when contributing parties’ paradigms of reality are not fully congruent?

This workshop, co-led by Tribal Partner Mede (Elder) Shannon Martin, will address deep listening skills as a key to trust-building. Shannon is the Director of the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The Heritage Seeds Project and how it grew into the Indigenous Collaborative Garden will be one trust-building example. The challenges of deep listening from an academic perspective are real. Participants should become aware that Reconciliation is about fundamental change – in one’s self.

Dr. David C. Michener is the curator at the U-M Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. Best known to the public for his co-authored book Peony, which made the New York Times 2018 Summer Reading List, his research addresses understanding the complex cross-cultural heritages of ornamental peonies and conserving key living specimens. He has an active program in molecular-evidence of peony relationships with colleagues and students here at U-M and in Belarus. His work with Indigenous Seeds in museum collections is an unanticipated intersection of deep engagement with U-M’s Museum Studies Program (Rackham Graduate School) and an ethical concern with the ‘Voice’ of Indigenous Communities in interpreting native plant collections and landscapes stewarded by the Botanical Gardens & Arboretum. Before coming to Michigan, David earned his BA in Botany (UNC-Chapel Hill), and his PhD (Claremont Graduate School) was followed by a NSF-funded postdoc at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum.

Mindful Self-compassion (March 2, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70459 70459-17600672@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 2, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

This course will introduce participants to the principles of Mindful Self-compassion (MSC). Self-compassion can be defined as learning to treat yourself the way you would treat a good friend when they suffer, fall short, or fail in some way. MSC combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience. Mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing. It’s being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. The Study Group for those 50 and over led by Bernadette Beach is held Mondays March 2 through April 6.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED: We are working on a reschedule date.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MSBR) is a technique that can help individuals experiencing stress resulting from chronic physical and psychological conditions. Research has demonstrated MSBR has contributed to improved behavioral outcomes including better sleep, lower blood pressure, and fewer worries! This workshop is for clinicians who are interested in learning more about teaching MBSR or in seeking MBSR teacher certification.

This intense, interactive teacher training includes both experiencing sessions of MBSR and working in small groups to begin practicing teaching the MBSR program. Participants will strengthen their skills to embody a non-judgmental, present-moment focus with an understanding of how this supports and strengthens such mind states as kindness, compassion and equanimity. Daily meditation practice, yoga/mindful movement, and periods of silence are also part of the curriculum.

This training workshop is led by skilled mindfulness teacher trainers who are also experienced clinicians, mindfulness teachers, and retreat leaders. Join the Psych Clinic and Susan Woods, LCSW, a leader in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction therapy, for this MBSR training workshop!

Location: Off Campus Location

As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.

Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis and is especially important during these trying times. Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

Free and open to all levels of practice.
