Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis and is especially important during these trying times. Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

Free and open to all levels of practice.

What if your ability to succeed in your classes was determined in part before you even stepped into the classroom? What is the one quality you need to overcome adversity academically and in life? This workshop will detail the research of Dr. Carol Dweck and her groundbreaking work on the concept of mindset. Students will learn how to abandon a debilitating fixed mindset in favor of a growth mindset, leading to success in areas they once considered too difficult. The workshop will also introduce students to the research of Dr. Angela Duckworth, and how a growth mindset can lead to the development of grit, an essential characteristic to overcoming our fear of failure.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Group Therapy - Winter 2021 (January 30, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/78346 78346-20783454@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, January 30, 2021 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: University Psychological Clinic

The University Psychological Clinic is offering a Saturday session of the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) group.

Join the Psych Clinic for an eight-week MBCT group starting on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021. The MBCT group serves as treatment for people with depression as well as other mental health conditions. While the chemical and physical aspects of depression and other mental health disorders are far more complex than just feeling down, current research supports a cognitive approach as a way to change patterns of brain functioning and build resilience in people struggling with chronic depression.

This program uses a combination of cognitive therapy and mindfulness to help participants form new, healthier modes of thought. MBCT initiates a cognitive change that helps clients move past events that have the potential to trigger relapse. Participants learn how to view their thoughts without judgment.

If you are interested in attending or referring a potential group participant, please contact the Psychological Clinic to begin the process. Call (734) 764-3471 to schedule a screening. Alternately, you can contact the clinic through the website form, found here: https://mari.umich.edu/psych-clinic/contact-us.

If you missed the start of this session or are interested in a group at a different time or on a different day, please contact us! We have ongoing groups and can organize new sessions based on demand.

The study and learning strategies students often bring to college are often insufficient to help them succeed at the university level. Particularly in challenging STEM courses, students can't simply memorize or cram their way to a good grade. This workshop will focus on the popular learning strategies to avoid, as well as the top three strategies you don't know but are shown by research to be the most effective for long-term learning.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Group Therapy - Winter 2021 (February 27, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/78346 78346-20783458@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, February 27, 2021 10:00am

As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.

Using a guided mindful meditation practice, led by Interim Associate Director, Doreen Murasky, you will identify thoughts and feelings that arise when you consider your relationship with money, budgeting and setting financial goals, and tools to help work with them. Then, learn from CEW+ Leadership Council member, and U-M alum, Ciara Merriman about how to identify or revisit what you want your money to achieve and set up good habits to create lasting change.

As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.

Have you ever wished you could have a more meaningful connection with art at UMMA? In this virtual experience, we will explore a more contemplative approach to looking at art with a variety of guided mindfulness practices. As we rest our attention on our breath, the body and heart relax while the mind quiets. We can experience what’s before with more spaciousness and also learn to trust our own experience. Led by meditation teacher and UMMA docent Laura Seligman. Beginner and experienced meditators welcome. The May sessions of Mindfulness at the Museum are presented by UMMA, in partnership with MHealth and University Human Resources, in honor of Mental Health Month. This year, it's more important than ever to find ways to nurture and sustain meaningful connections. If you could benefit from talking to someone, support is available year-round for all faculty and staff. Looking for support for students? Check out the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offices for students: CAPS Ann Arbor, CAPS Dearborn, CAPS Flint.

Mindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing, focus, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection, silence, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds, moment to moment, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress, poor mood, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.

On Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.
