Happening @ Michigan https://events.umich.edu/list/rss RSS Feed for Happening @ Michigan Events at the University of Michigan. Special Exhibit | Staging Theater: Chinese Operatic Practice and Performance (April 19, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/63084 63084-15553756@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 19, 2019 8:00am
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies

This exhibition will be open every day, April 12-June 30, during Hatcher Library open hours.

Featuring the vibrant paintings of Peking opera face patterns, performance props, and rare books, this exhibition is a tribute to the University of Michigan's commitment to the presentation of Chinese operatic arts and culture. In the Winter Semester of 2019, a Peking opera performer specializing in the jing 淨 role engaged in a Chinese New Year artist-residency; the renown Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theater of Jiangsu Province, China, stages a production of The Lute (Pipa ji 琵琶記); and an international conference examines the critical role of media in the making and remaking of Ming-Qing literature and performance.

All of these endeavors offer the U-M faculty, staff, and students and Michiganers a chance to experience and embrace Chinese operatic arts and literary culture at the highest level and to introduce to the audience traditional Chinese aesthetic and moral values and their challenges and meanings in traditional and contemporary contexts.

Please visit https://ii.umich.edu/lrccs/news-events/events/videos-of-past-events.html to access the online recording of Peking opera performer, Li Yang, in vocal recitation and in the practice of hand painting his own operatic face pattern. Introductions are provided by Professor David Rolston and LRCCS Postdoctoral Fellow Anne Rebull with Professor Joseph Lam being painted at the end of the program as the character Cao Cao

This exhibition is co-organized by Carol Stepanchuk and Liangyu Fu, and is sponsored by the U-M Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. Special thanks to Professor Joseph Lam, Professor David Rolston, and the Confucius Institute.

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Lewis & Spence deliver a wide variety of old time classics with solid vocal harmonies, region-specific fiddle tunes, and driving banjo stylings to chase the blues away! Swapping instruments throughout their set, this duo dons an amusing repertoire, punctuated by the occasional flatfoot number, during which Lewis clicks-and-clacks along with the rhythmic phrases as Spence hammers them out on the banjo. Eager to invite audience members to wrestle with the difficult themes that shroud old time music and its history, this duo shares their analysis, questions, and ponderings casually throughout their set. Traveling with an impressive display of cheap art, it’s clear their inspiration ranges from a reverence for traditional music to the looming collapse of our civilization.

Can we improve musicians’ opportunities to earn money from music?

The amount of revenue generated by the music and recording industries
is massive, and by most accounts, increasing. Musicians and composers
receive only a tiny fraction of that money, and many of them complain
that that share has been getting smaller.

Students will discuss how working musicians and composers can earn more money from their music.

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Meet Me at UMMA invites people with mild memory loss to enjoy a guided gallery experience along with family members or care partners. This program is designed for people who live at home and their companions.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing mild memory loss, research has shown that the visual and expressive arts can be good for your mind. In addition, great enjoyment is to be found in seeking out the sights, sounds, textures, and good feelings that come with looking at, learning, and sharing feelings about paintings, music, and other creative arts.

UMMA's trained docents will accompany small groups for a guided tour and provide the opportunity for everyone to experience different kinds of art and share their responses.

Meet Me at UMMA is generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Monroe-Brown Foundation Discretionary Fund for Outreach to the State of Michigan, and individual donors.

Part of the Cinetopia Film Festival

In snowbound Tokamachi, Japan, teenaged Akio Sakurai took refuge in his room, escaping to another world with a pair of headphones and a pile of Led Zeppelin records. Moving to Tokyo, Akio worked as a kimono salesman by day, but by night became "Mr. Jimmy," adopting the guitar chops and persona of Jimmy Page. For 35 years, Akio recreated vintage Zeppelin concerts note-for-note in small Tokyo clubs, until the “real” Jimmy Page stopped by one night, and Akio’s life changed forever. Inspired by Mr. Page’s ovation, Akio quits his “salary man” job, leaving behind his family to move to Los Angeles and join “Led Zepagain.” Soon cultures clash, and Akio’s idyllic vision of America meets with reality.

With special guest appearance by director Peter Dowd at both screenings.

More details about the film can be found on the IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9617752/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Special Exhibit | Staging Theater: Chinese Operatic Practice and Performance (May 24, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/63084 63084-15553761@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, May 24, 2019 8:00am

The purpose of this town hall will be to discuss the findings and recommendations from the consensus report, The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education: Branches from the Same Tree, released Spring 2018 by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). The even will also facilitate discussions about strategies for the creation, evaluation, and sustainability of courses and programs that integrate across disciplines. The report represents a culmination of a two-year study conducted by a committee of National Academies members including scientists, engineers, health professionals, humanists, artists, and industry leaders. The report argues that integrating the humanities and arts with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine results in positive learning outcomes that will help students successfully enter the workforce, enrich their lives, and help them become active and informed citizens. Importantly, a range of positive educational outcomes resulted from these methods, including improved written and oral communication skills, teamwork skills, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in real-world settings.

Andrew Brown's Djangophonique is a musical project that performs Jazz Manouche and Hot Swing inspired by the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and his Quintette du Hot Club de France. Born in a sandstone Victorian farmhouse that has been in his family since it was built four generations ago, Andrew Brown is the son of a Motown session musician and grew up listening to the sounds of his dad’s piano as he steeped in musical influences from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder. As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in swing, he co-founded the eclectic Americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates a year. Traveling all over the continental United States, playing esteemed venues and festivals such as The Ark, Sisters Folk Festival, Wheatland, Cervantes Ballroom, Summercamp Music Festival, Schuba’s, and The Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium, he cut his teeth as a guitarist, songwriter, and band leader. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017, he began tirelessly studying and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy-hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts.

Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends' projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz and Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically in the style of Django.

Pete Siers, leader of Los Gatos, is an intensely physical and dynamic player on timbales, coro and percussion. Other world class performers in the group include: Cary Kocher, on vibes and coro; Kurt Krahnke, bass; Brian Di Blassio, piano and coro; and Al Di Blassio, congas, vocals and percussion. The rhythm section is remarkable, but many also love the vibraphone, which can send a cool flow down your back on a hot summer day. This concert is part of the Michigan Medicine Gifts of Art Summer Courtyard Concert Series. Rain/heat location: University Hospital Main Lobby, Floor 1.

Warren & Flick explore the nuanced textures of a two-person band. Using both original material and standards from many genres they have arranged in a personal style, the group finds new depth in the simplicity of the duo. Jacob Warren plays double bass, while Grant Flick plays violin, tenor guitar and mandolin. Currently based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, the two met at the 2015 Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS), a program accepting only sixteen young string players from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation, composition, and performance training. A part of the Savannah Music Festival in Georgia, AMS is led by multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall with the help of guitarist Julian Lage.

After discovering their shared musical interests, Jacob and Grant began collaborating as a duo as well as in larger projects including The Leafless and Westbound Situation, both comprised of former AMS participants. Jacob and Grant attend University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, & Dance, where they spend much of their time arranging, composing and performing together. With Jacob’s classical foundation and Grant’s experience in bluegrass and jazz, their contrasting backgrounds give them a unique and compelling musical narrative. Find them on Facebook.

Traveling all over the continental United States, playing esteemed venues and festivals such as The Ark, Sisters Folk Festival, Wheatland, Cervantes Ballroom, Summercamp Music Festival, Schuba’s, and The Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium, he cut his teeth as a guitarist, songwriter and band leader. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017, he began studying and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy-hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts. Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends' projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz, and Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically, in the style of Django.

Meet Me at UMMA is generously supported by the Monroe-Brown Foundation Discretionary Fund for Outreach to the State of Michigan and individual donors.

As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in swing he co-founded the eclectic americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates a year. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017 he began tirelessly studying and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts. Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz, Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically in the style of Django.

The University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society (UMGASS) is holding auditions for The Yeomen of the Guard, or the Merryman and His Maid on Monday, September 9th, Tuesday, September 10th, and Wednesday, September 11th at the Student Theater Arts Complex (STAC), 1201 Kipke Drive in Ann Arbor (directly east of the U-M football stadium) from 7:00 – 10:00 pm. All roles are available for SATB principals and chorus; cast will be selected from the audition pool with no pre-casting. All are welcome to audition, including students, faculty / staff, and general community members of Ann Arbor / Southeast Michigan area. To sign up for an audition time you may either attend the UMGASS Mass Meeting at 7:00 pm on Sunday, September 8th at the Michigan League, or e-mail umgassexec@umich.edu to have a member of the board sign you up by proxy. Walk-ins are also welcome; please arrive before 9:00 pm if you plan to walk-in. Callbacks (if necessary) will be held on the evening of Thursday, September 12th.

Please prepare ~32-64 bars of a selection from musical theater, comic opera, or opera (in English), and provide a legible copy for the accompanist. Be prepared to read selections from the libretto if you are interested in a speaking role. There will be no dance audition for this production. Rehearsals will average two days per week between Sunday afternoon and Thursday evening for both chorus and principals. Production dates are December 5 – 8, 2019, at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater in the Michigan League, with full staging and full orchestra.

The University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society (UMGASS) was founded in 1947 and is the oldest student-run society nationwide dedicated to performing the operettas of Sir William Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. Each year we bring together students and community members for two fully staged productions of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, which are performed with orchestra at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre in downtown Ann Arbor. The quality of our productions sets a high standard for community G&S companies, and our performances, particularly of the lesser-known works of the canon, are benchmarks for similar organizations around the country and the world.

We’re proud to be a great place for future performing arts professionals as well as a creative outlet for students, professors, and community members of all ages looking to blow off steam and have a good time participating in a great show!

The Yeomen of the Guard was the 11th collaboration between librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan. The story takes place at the Tower of London, where the heroic Colonel Fairfax is scheduled to be executed the following morning on questionable grounds. The Colonel’s heirs will be disinherited if he dies unmarried, and so he finds a short-term bride in the strolling player, Elsie Maynard – much to the chagrin of her infatuated traveling partner, the jester Jack Point. Meanwhile, the Colonel’s friends and admirers work for his release – or for his escape, if necessary. Will the Colonel, his impetuous marriage, and the broken-hearted jester all survive until the final curtain? This time there will be no last-minute topsy-turvy revelation to prevent the story’s dramatic conclusion.

Yeomen of the Guard will be directed by David Andrews, who most recently directed UMGASS’s 2018 production of The Grand Duke, and who will be directing with UMGASS for the eighth time, among his 22 semesters with the group. Music Director for this production will be Ezra Donner, a U-M alumnus with a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University, who conducted previous UMGASS productions of The Mikado, Patience, HMS Pinafore, and The Pirates of Penzance between 2015 and 2017. The Choreographer will be UMGASS veteran Beth Ballbach, who choreographed recent UMGASS productions of Princess Ida, Iolanthe, The Grand Duke, and The Gondoliers, among many others.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society

For additional information on Yeomen, including audio files of the music, check out the Gilbert & Sullivan Archive at https://gsarchive.net/yeomen/html/index.html. For additional information about UMGASS, check out the UMGASS web site at https://www.umgass.org/.

Italian filmic neorealism was more an ethic than an esthetic; it was not an organized movement but a constellation of directors and films who made a virtue of necessity. Nonetheless, in hindsight it has come to be defined by its stylistic innovations (for example, the use of location rather than studio, and of non-professional actors). As a result, the critical bibliography on the topic deals extensively with individual films, the auteurs, and with matters of form and content (the introduction of the perspective of the subaltern classes), the contribution of the musical score to the emotional and intellectual impact of the films has been given much less attention.
The purpose of this paper is that of beginning to address that lacuna.

Joseph Francese is University Distinguished Faculty at Michigan State University, Series Editor of “Studi di italianistica moderna e contemporanea nel mondo anglofono/Studies in Modern and Contemporary Italianistica in the Anglophone World” (a monograph series published by Firenze University Press) and Senior Editor emeritus of ITALIAN CULTURE (2003-2018). He is the author of numerous articles and chapters on topics in Renaissance and contemporary literature and film (including an essay on the influence of Cesare Zavattini on Latin American cinema), and has written monographs on Sciascia, Pasolini, postmodern narrative, Italian cultural politics in the 1950s, and the fictions of Eco, Consolo, and Tabucchi.

Serene, pastoral, and deceptively simple–no piece has come to define Aaron Copland’s reputation as the “American voice” of classical music more than the great American ballet, Appalachian Spring. We travel to the fields of Galánta with the composer, Zoltán Koldáy to continue our dance-inspired evening in Hill Auditorium. His Dances of Galánta holds a deeply personal meaning discovered by weaving through the Hungarian folk melodies from his childhood spent in Galánta surrounded by stunning orchestral colors. The distinct and fiery rhythms of Hungarian dances return and close the program with a performance of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2, op. 83 in B-flat major featuring celebrated pianist Emanuel Ax.

Join us for a 45-minute interdisciplinary musical performance that highlights the turning points in the history of physics.

The show combines fragments (excerpts from writings by some of the most prominent physicists in history) read and interpreted by a narrator (a role played by Lynnae Lehfeldt in the premiere), with original songs, based on each fragment, composed by Alberto Rojo, and performed by Alberto Rojo (guitar and voice), Michael Gould (percussion), and Dave Haughey (cello). The project explores the intersection between the arts and the sciences, and postulates that art and science are not antagonistic alternatives in the search for truth; rather, there is a broad territory of coexistence.

The movements are as follows Galileo (The Book of the Universe); Isaac Newton (From the Principia); Pierre Maupertuis (Least Action); Rudolf Clausius (The Limiting Condition); Ludwig Boltzmann (Atomic movements); James Clerk Maxwell (From letters to Faraday); Marie Curie (Radioactivity); Albert Einstein (From the 1905 paper); Max Planck (The quantum of action); Werner Heisenberg (Analogies); J. S. Bell (Remote Instruments); Richard Feynman (Trees are made of air); Vera Rubin (Dark Matter)

Performed by the Mark Lomax Quartet.

The program is both a performance of the suite from the 400, a 12-album cycle that was released in January 2019, and a discussion among the audience and the performers. The music and discussion explore Black America in pre-colonial Afrika, the Ma’afa (the 400 years between 1619 and 2019), and Afro-futurism, a vision of community strength and unity in the next 400 years. The purpose is to engage students, faculty, staff, and artists in an experience that educates, entertains, and informs, and also inspires and uplifts the human spirit through the power of music. The work was presented to a sold-out audience at the Lincoln Theatre in January 26, 2019.

Luke Dahl is assistant professor of Composition and Computer Technologies in the Music Department at University of Virginia where he teaches classes on music technology, audio signal processing, and music interaction design. His research is primarily situated in the interdisciplinary field of New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) which investigates and explores the intersection of technology and musical practice through the activities of design, musical performance, and empirical research. He is especially interested in systems for digitally-mediated real-time music collaboration, and in the role of movement and gesture in music.

Dahl has recently released alpha versions of two software libraries: Modosc is a Max library for processing motion-capture data in real-time to enable movement-based interactions, and was created in collaboration with Dr. Federico Visi. Bf-Pd is a library written in PureData which facilitates real-time data-sharing and collaboration between musicians in spontaneously formed ensembles. Bf-Pd was developed in collaboration with Dr Florent Berthaut at Université de Lille.

This conference on “The Cultural History of France and the World” will bring together current and former students of Dena Goodman’s in her honor. These interdisciplinary scholars build on the foundations of cultural history while also defining and embracing new historical
questions in ways that keep gender, race, sexuality, and cultural practice at the core of their research. This conference will feature papers that centralize the margins of the French empire; foreground interpersonal relationships in the process of artistic, intellectual, and cultural production; and position science as an integral part of politics, culture, and society, including historical practice.

The conference will feature the research of current University of Michigan students working in these areas as well as former students engaging in interdisciplinary historical scholarship on French cultural history. Michigan faculty will chair each session. Dena Goodman, one of the most innovative historians in this field, will provide closing remarks for the conference.
