This is a milestone in a journey that brings together music and neurobiology. Through a collaboration among musicians, neurobiologists, sound engineers, composers, scientists, humans, and nematodes, we explore questions inspired by neurobiology experiments with the invertebrate model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). How does memory sound? What constitutes the musical background of a memory? How is a maze represented musically? What is the relationship between stochasticity in spatial navigation and improvisation in musical navigation? How can a human performer converse with a tiny invertebrate animal lost in space? How can we learn to create music guided by an experimental animal? How can an invertebrate creature learn to navigate guided by music? And, ultimately, how do the founding definitions of our certainties shape up when we shift our frame of thought into a new paradigm?

Directed by MiMi Scardulla
Music Direction by Jason DeBord

The setting is the roaring 1920s. Lovers Queenie and Burrs decide to throw the party-to-end-all-parties in their Manhattan apartment. After the arrival of a slew of colorful guests living life on the edge, Queenie's wandering eye lands on a striking man named Mr. Black. As the decadence is reaching a climax, so is Burrs' jealousy, which erupts and sends him into a violent rage. Gun in hand and inhibitions abandoned, Burrs turns on Queenie and Black. The gun gets fired, but who's been shot?

A steamy prohibition tale, steamrolling and roaring its way across the stage, The Wild Party was an Off-Broadway gem that garnered an array of industry accolades, including Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Obie awards. Based on Joseph Moncure March's 1928 narrative poem of the same name, this darkly brilliant show features one of the most exciting, pulse-racing scores ever written, courtesy of SMTD alumnus Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family, Big Fish).

Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

We all are transfixed whenever we hear beautiful music emanating from either of the University’s two carillons on campus. And the simple sight of the towers housing the Baird and Lurie Carillons leave us awestruck. Have you ever wondered how our University was fortunate enough to acquire two carillons? Have you wondered how they were played? How were the bells made? Or who was the person (carillonneur) creating the music, and how do they make the huge bells ring out? How and when were the Baird and Lurie Carillons built on the UofM campus, and who were some of their notable carillonneurs? How do you play a carillon? I’ll bet you can’t guess!
We’ll learn about the origins of carillons in the 16th century to the future of carillon composing and performance in modern times.

Eva Albalghiti is a carillonneur at the University of Michigan. Eva began playing the carillon at Yale University, and was a member of the Yale Guild of Carillonneurs. She was also recognized for her talent through membership in the Guild of Carillonneurs of North America. After pursuing a two-year research opportunity in Beijing, China, she began her PhD in Environmental Engineering at the U of M. Eva plays a weekly carillon recital at Lurie Tower on UM’s North Campus. I’ll bet the view from the top is spectacular!

Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed prior to the event.

Musicology Lecture: “Naming and Counting Whiteness:   Fred Astaire, Stephen Sondheim, and Race in the American Musical” - Dr. Todd Decker (October 22, 2021 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/87752 87752-21645625@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 22, 2021 5:00pm

Todd Decker (Ph.D., University of Michigan, 2007) is the Paul Tietjens Professor of Music, American Culture Studies, and Film and Media Studies at Washington University in St. Louis.

Racial segregation pervades the American stage and screen musical from its origins to the present. And while the black-cast musical is usually named as such, the necessary complement on the other side of the color line—the white-cast musical—is typically granted the unmodified moniker “the musical.” (Eliding race in this way is, of course, a classic expression of whiteness.) This talk names the white-cast musical as such by identifying aesthetic, structural, and industrial forms of whiteness in the output of two major figures: Fred Astaire and Stephen Sondheim. Drawing on forthcoming work on both men, I use a variety of methods to identify and describe Astaire’s and Sondheim’s distinct and particular types of whiteness. Adding precision to this inquiry, I draw on digital humanities methods that quantify the extent to which whiteness dominates the history of the American musical.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for World Performance Studies

Center for World Performance Studies presents the first in a series of virtual roundtable discussion curated by Scholar-in-Residency Ajay Heble, exploring the theme of Improvisation & Encounter. Drawing its inspiration in part from The Fierce Urgency of Now: Improvisation, Rights, and the Ethics of Cocreation, a collaboratively-authored book by Daniel Fischlin, George Lipsitz, and Ajay Heble, this series of online roundtable conversations will explore Improvisation in the arts as a scene of encounter. What happens when artists come together to improvise, and what might this scene of encounter tell us about the staging and negotiation of difference: between artists, between artists and audiences, between the present moment and the varied histories and contexts that gave rise to it?

Moderated by Ajay Heble, and presented in association with Edgefest, the focus of the first panel is FESTIVALS, and brings together three leaders in the curatorial field. Vocalist Deanna Relyea was the founder of Kerrytown Concert House and is the current Artistic Director of Edgefest, Michigan’s long running avant-jazz festival. Dancer, poet and organizer of movement, music and causes Patricia Nicholson Parker has developed her work within the aesthetic of free jazz. Nicholson founded Arts For Art and the Vision Festival to promote and advocate for free jazz. Rainbow Robert is a relentless proponent of strange, beautiful, heavy music. She has been deeply involved with the jazz community in Canada for the past two decades through her work with Coastal Jazz, and as producer of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, where she currently serves in the role of Managing Artistic Director.

Scholar-in-Residence Ajay Heble is Director of the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation and Professor of English in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph. He is the author or editor of several books, and a founding co-editor of the journal Critical Studies in Improvisation/Études critiques en improvisation (www.criticalimprov.com ). He was the Project Director for Improvisation, Community, and Social Practice, a large-scale Major Collaborative Research Initiative, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. As the Founder and Artistic Director of the Guelph Jazz Festival, Heble has jolted the citizens of Guelph into an appreciation of improvised and avant-garde music and delighted aficionados from around the world with his innovative and daring programming.

Steve Swell is one of the finest composers/improvisers on the New York downtown scene and is internationally acclaimed for his trombone playing. He has performed regularly in Europe, often in Poland, where he has established important connections with local musicians. On one of his many trips to Kraków he decided to visit Auschwitz, and wrote, “The first time I tried to visit Auschwitz in 2007, there was no train. They had changed the track of the train that regularly departed for there. They announced the track change in Polish but not in English. There were about two very angry people yelling and screaming at the ticket sellers and railroad staff as to this oversight. Can you imagine, people yelling that they missed the train to Auschwitz and that it had ruined their day?”

Later he wrote, "*If Trains Could Speak* is inspired by that ninety-minute train ride from Kraków to Auschwitz concentration camp. The ride itself is through some very beautiful, peaceful countryside and farmland in southeast Poland. The incongruity of my ride and the ride of those whose trip seventy years before was one of uncertainty and hopelessness prompted a multitude of thoughts and feelings as the train progressed to its destination. The journey and visit to the camp itself sparked a deeper understanding of the horrors that humans are capable of and its juxtaposition to our ability to be brilliant, creative, and tolerant. Delving into the choice we have in either surrendering to our baser instincts or transcending them, feeds my own lifelong curiosity of what it means to be alive, and to know that life is fragile, dangerous, and magnificent all at the same time."

In addition to the composer on trombone, the performance will feature Deanna Relyea, mezzo-soprano; Jason Kao Hwang, violin and viola; Piotr Michalowski, bass clarinet and soprano saxophone; Steve Rush, piano; Ken Filiano, bass; and Michael TA Thompson, percussion.

All attendees must be fully vaccinated and wear a mask.

This historical moment presents us with the urgent challenge to reflect on who we are, how we got to where we are, and what we can do to create collaborative solutions to move onwards in a restorative way. Indigenous Peoples have for millennia developed a sense of awareness of the keen consciousness of the Earth to enhance embodied knowledge and a relational capacity that reverences life based on collaboration and compassion. The cosmologies that come from such insight incite acknowledgment and gratitude to all our relations. Interdependence does not stay as a mere ideal, it manifests as a perceived, shared truth engaged in action. Come together to explore our exceptional capacity of reconnection to the nourishing, relationship, empowering and transformative force of the Earth.

Yuria Celidwin Bio
I am of Indigenous Nahua and Maya descent from the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. My interests are the interdisciplinary approaches to the experience of self-transcendence, its embodiment in contemplative practice, and how it enhances prosocial behavior (ethics, compassion, kindness, reverence, and a sense of awe and sacredness) across Indigenous contemplative traditions. As a scholar, I work on the intersection of Indigenous studies, cultural psychology, and contemplative studies. My thesis on the “Ethics of Belonging” is an earth-based ecological relational experience that engenders an ethos of conscious social responsibility for self, community, and environment. Within this work, I examine how self-identity relates to cultural narratives and how reconstructing them can transform our times’ social and racial injustices. I teach Indigenous epistemologies, spirituality and pioneered the Indigenous contemplative experience within contemplative studies. As an activist, I strive for Indigenous representation and the revitalization of Indigenous wisdom as sophisticated systems of contemplative insight. I emphasize the reclamation, regeneration, and transmission of Indigenous ways of knowing and the advancement of Indigenous rights and the rights of the Earth for social and environmental justice.

Presented by the University of Michigan Program in Creativity and Consciousness Studies in collaboration with the Center for Creative Studies (Detroit)

Stage Direction by Abbigail Coté
Music Direction by Kirk Severtson

The King is throwing a ball in Prince Charming’s honor, and all will be in attendance—except for Lucette, known as “Cinderella” to her stepmother & stepsisters—until Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother steps in. The fairy’s spell lasts only until midnight. That’s long enough for Cinderella and Prince Charming to meet and fall in love.

This witty French opera premiered in Paris at the Opéra-Comique on May 24, 1899. It is based on the classic fairy tale as told by Charles Perrault. This operatic version is closer to Perrault’s story than the version used in Rossini’s La Cenerentola. Its music is full of melodic charm with recognizable arias.

This production will be sung in French with projected English translations.

VENUE CORRECTION - This masterclass will be in the Earl V. Moore Hankinson Rehearsal Hall (2005 Baits Drive)

Praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer as having “a sound as clear and sure as it [is] luxurious,” Carol Jantsch has been principal tuba of The Philadelphia Orchestra since 2006. She won the position during her senior year at the University of Michigan, becoming the first female tuba player in a major symphony orchestra.

In addition to her duties in the Philadelphia Orchestra, Ms. Jantsch is a renowned tuba soloist. She gives solo recitals regularly, and has appeared as a concerto soloist with various ensembles, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Columbus Symphony, the St. Petersburg Symphony in Russia, the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, and the United States Marine Band. She has performed in Carnegie’s Zankel Hall with the Musical Olympus Festival, and has appeared on the radio on NPR’s series From the Top and Interlochen Public Radio’s Live From Studio A. In 2009 she was honored with a “Best of Philly” award from Philadelphia magazine. She has also won prizes in several international solo tuba competitions, and alumni awards from both Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Michigan.

Ms. Jantsch is in increasing demand as a teacher worldwide, having given master classes in Europe, Asia, and North America. She enjoys working with young musicians, and has been a featured artist at various brass festivals in Finland, Germany, Canada, and the United States. She is on the faculty at the Yale University School of Music and Temple University’s Boyer College of Music.

Ms. Jantsch is an advocate for music education in her community. In 2018, she founded Tubas For Good, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides instruments for students in the Philadelphia School District. Ms. Jantsch coaches music students from the district both through Tubas For Good and through the Philadelphia Orchestra’s All-City program. Since 2017, she has hosted an annual Tuba/Euphonium PlayIN, a free community event where players of all ages and skill levels are invited to perform as a mass tuba ensemble on the Verizon Hall stage.

Ms. Jantsch enjoys interacting with audiences in a very different way than her orchestra role as a member of Tubular, a tuba cover band that performs at bars and events. Comprised of tubas, euphoniums, drums, and vocals, Tubular is committed to presenting pop and rock music in a fun and engaging way, while guilefully stretching people’s notions of the capabilities of low brass instruments. As the chief arranger of Tubular, Ms. Jantsch revels in the challenge of adapting music from ABBA to Zeppelin for this unique setting.

Raised in a musical family, Ms. Jantsch began piano lessons at age six and began studying euphonium at Interlochen Arts Camp at age nine. After switching to tuba, she attended the prestigious arts boarding high school Interlochen Arts Academy, graduating as salutatorian of her class. She continued her studies at the University of Michigan under the tutelage of Fritz Kaenzig. After winning her position with The Philadelphia Orchestra in February of 2006, she returned to Michigan to complete her Bachelor of Music degree, graduating with highest honors.

Ms. Jantsch can be heard on numerous Philadelphia Orchestra recordings, including the 2010 release of Ewald Quintets no. 1 and 3 with fellow Philadelphia Orchestra principal brass. She released her first solo recording, Cascades, in 2009. In 2013 she premiered Reflections on the Mississippi, a tuba concerto written for her and the Temple University Symphony Orchestra by Grammy Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty. She performed the concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2015, and recorded it with the Albany Symphony Orchestra and the University of Michigan Symphony Band.

Ms. Jantsch is a Yamaha Performing Artist. She plays a Yamaha YFB-822 F tuba, a YFB-826 “Yamayork” CC tuba, and a PT-6 CC tuba.

Center for World Performance Studies will host groundbreaking vocalist, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and dancer Jen Shyu for an artist residency, including a performance of her new multilingual multimedia show Zero Grasses. In this mythical monodrama, Shyu effortlessly weaves together music, monologue and video projection, tracing the threads of her life to explore the painful terrain of expectation, ambition, longing and love. A performance of the piece will take place at East Quad Keene Theater on Thursday, November 18 at 7:30pm, and is free and open to the public.

Zero Grasses was commissioned by John Zorn’s Stone Commissioning series and premiered in October 2019 at National Sawdust. It is sung in English, Taiwanese, Tetum of East Timor, Korean, Javanese, and Indonesian. The work features Shyu’s original music as well as some traditional music from these countries, with movement and installation art that carry the essence of these specific vocal and dance traditions. Shyu will accompany her voice with Taiwanese moon lute, gayageum, piano, violin, dance, and electronics.

Songs As Unique Artefacts of Cultural Layers: The Legacy of a Misunderstood Troubadour

This talk will focus on songs by Alfonso X (1221-1284), King of Castile and León, as unique artefacts that reveal multiple layers of courtly, urban, and sacred culture. Alfonso devised hundreds of Cantigas de Santa Maria to fuel his larger political aspirations and engage productively with aspects of the surrounding Arab-Andalusian civilization. He was a descendent of two Iberian dynasties, but also related to the Roman-Germanic and Byzantine emperors, as well as the Kings of England and France. Notably, he was a great-great-grandson of the first known troubadour, William, the 9th Duke of Aquitaine.  The language of courtly song in most of the Iberian Peninsula during the thirteenth century was Galician-Portuguese. What is often overlooked is that King Alfonso was perhaps the leading Galician-Portuguese troubadour of his era. He embarked on his most significant, innovative, and enduring personal project when in his forties and residing in or near Seville in Southern Spain. Embracing devotional song, he substituted the Virgin Mary for the idealized earthly ladies typically desired and praised by the troubadours.

The second in a series of virtual roundtable discussion curated by Scholar-in-Residency Ajay Heble, exploring the theme of Improvisation & Encounter. Drawing its inspiration in part from *The Fierce Urgency of Now: Improvisation, Rights, and the Ethics of Cocreation*, a collaboratively-authored book by Daniel Fischlin, George Lipsitz, and Ajay Heble, this series of online roundtable conversations will explore Improvisation in the arts as a scene of encounter. Moderated by Heble, the focus of the second panel is PEDAGOGY, and brings together educators from diverse disciplines. This roundtable will explore how the teaching and learning of improvisational artistic practices might be understood as vital and publicly resonant sites of encounter that generate new forms of knowledge, new understandings of identity and community, and new imaginative possibilities. How, we want to ask, might the kinds of cultural and pedagogical institutions and communities that present and promote improvised arts (both within and outside of traditional classrooms) shape our understanding of public culture, of memory, of history?

Douglas R. Ewart, Professor Emeritus at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, immigrated from Jamaica to Chicago in 1963, where he studied music theory at VanderCook College of Music, electronic music at Governors State University, and composition at the School of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. His life and his wide-ranging work have always been inextricably associated with Jamaican culture, history, politics, and the land itself. His extremely varied and highly interdisciplinary work encompasses music composition (including graphic and conceptual scores as well as conventionally notated works), painting and kinetic sound sculpture, and multi-instrumental performance. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, and others.

Ed Sarath is Professor of music in the Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation at the University of Michigan and also director of the U-M Program in Creativity and Consciousness Studies. He founded and serves as president of the International Society for Improvised Music (www.isimprov.org). His most recent book is Black Music Matters: Jazz and the Transformation of Music Studies (Rowman and Littlefield, 2018), which along with his prior book Improvisation, Creativity, and Consciousness: Jazz as Integral Template for Music, Education, and Society (SUNY/Albany, 2013), are the first to apply to music principles of an emergent, consciousness-based worldview called Integral Theory.

Georgia Simms is an artist, educator and facilitator. Since 2005, she has taught Graham-based modern dance technique as well as movement improvisation in a variety of contexts, for youth and adults. These experiences in dance combined with her academic studies, in geography, governance and arts-based community engagement, inform her creation of learning experiences for students in the First Year Seminar Program at the University of Guelph. She also weaves movement into her group facilitation and program design for the local non-profit organization, Art Not Shame. Simms is currently an artist-in-residence with Guelph Dance for its 2020-2021 season.

Jesse Stewart is an award-winning composer, improviser, percussionist, visual artist, instrument builder, researcher, writer, educator, and community activist dedicated to reimagining the spaces between artistic disciplines. As a musician, he works primarily in the areas of jazz, new music, free improvisation, and electronic music. He has performed and/or recorded with musical luminaries from around the world including George Lewis, Roswell Rudd, Hamid Drake, Evan Parker, Bill Dixon, William Parker, Pauline Oliveros, David Mott, Malcolm Goldstein, Jandek, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee and many others, in addition to leading several groups and performing regularly as a soloist. A past recipient of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award, he is dedicated to building and strengthening communities through arts education and outreach.

Scholar-in-Residence Ajay Heble is Director of the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation and Professor of English in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph. He is the author or editor of several books, and a founding co-editor of the journal Critical Studies in Improvisation/Études critiques en improvisation (www.criticalimprov.com).

Michael Gurevich, director

A concert of original collaborative intermedia performances for acoustic instruments and electronics by students from across SMTD on the theme of PROCESSING.

A bewildering succession and accretion of unusual, complex, traumatic, global phenomena prompt the individual and collective need to process what has happened and is happening. In spite of their recent and concurrent intensification, these phenomena aren’t events with well-defined horizons. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had its ebbs and flows; the struggle for racial justice long preceded the murder of George Floyd; the climate catastrophe has been unfolding for the better part of a century. These and other turmoils are unfolding processes, as are our grief, trauma, and efforts to cope.
