The Hummingbird Global Writers' Circle presents Writing Gender (August 21, 2017 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/42105 42105-9550249@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, August 21, 2017 3:00pm
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: CEW+

The Hummingbird Global Writers’ Circle is an international reading series started by Dr. Debotri Dhar, CEW Visiting Scholar (2015-17) and Lecturer in Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan. The aim of this literary initiative is to bring writers and communities together in different parts of the world to foster a love of books, to discuss the craft of writing, and to promote creative dialogue and global understanding in small ways. The name was inspired by the tiny hummingbird which builds its home with just a few drops of nectar, a root here, a leaf there, and a little bit of sky.

The Circle's themed readings by established and emerging writers are free and open to the community. The theme for the first event of the Circle is feminism/ gender, to be held on Monday August 21 (3-5 pm) at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

The writer-speakers for this session are Linda Gregerson, Laura Hulthen Thomas, Mike Ferro and Debotri Dhar (writer bios below), who will read from their poetry and fiction, followed by conversation /Q&A.

Light refreshments will be served. All members of the community are welcome to attend, however, RSVP is required. If you wish to hear our speakers read from their work, share tips, and engage in conversation, please RSVP to debotri@umich.edu.

If the world runs on teams, why do so few reach their full potential? The reality of life is that all teams struggle to perform at their best.

In our Destination Unstoppable workshop, we’ll focus on three things to help overcome the obstacles to success so that your teams achieve their goals!

1. Define Success: What does success look like in your role? For your teams?
2. Discover Untapped Talent: There is untapped talent on every team! You’ll take the Clifton StrengthsFinder to help us understand how you think, execute tasks, build relationships, and influence others.
3. Alignment: We’ll have exercises designed to align your strengths with success in your role and success of the team.

This fun and energy-filled workshop will help you build the common mindset first for you, and then your team, so that you find your own path to Destination Unstoppable!

You will benefit by:

Gaining a solid understanding of your natural patterns of excellence in how you think, execute, relate and influence
Obtaining an awareness of how to leverage your strengths in their role
Knowing how to help teams harness untapped talent, and align with a common view of success

Audience:

Managers, supervisors, or team leads who would like to increase goal achievement on their teams

Location: Michigan League
Organized By: CEW+

CEW is leading a one-day Spectrum of Advocacy and Activism Symposium: Finding Your Voice focused on advocacy and activism training. This event will demonstrate how a person’s activism can change over time, how advocacy is tied to a person’s context and situational power, and how partnering with diverse perspectives can strengthen advocacy and activism efforts. Health outcomes has been selected as the theme for this year’s symposium because of increasing uncertainty surrounding health care in America, including coverage for women’s health care (mental health, mammograms, birth control, maternity care, etc.).

The goals for this one-day symposium are:
-to engage students, practitioners, and researchers who are interested in advocacy and activism
-to equip symposium participants with advocacy training that can be applied to their area(s) of interest
-to develop a network among attendees for potential partnerships beyond the symposium
-to highlight the value of diverse perspectives in advocacy work.

The symposium includes presentations by local and national advocacy experts who have taken varied approaches to advocacy in ways that best leverage their current context (power, privilege, and identity). Training sessions will feature capacity-building workshops on a range of topics from community organizing to bystander intervention to running for political office. Afternoon panel discussions will offer practical strategies that attendees can apply to their own work as advocates and activists. At the end of the day, participants will be presented with a common challenge that they will address in small groups comprised of individuals from campus and community.

The day will close out with a surprise special keynote speaker to be announced soon!

This free event will take place on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at the Michigan League. Space for the symposium is limited to 350 people, however, the free keynote lecture will be open to the public.

Registration available on our website now!

The MIW program offers an opportunity each year for 45-50 undergraduates from ANY MAJOR to spend a semester (Fall or Winter) in Washington D.C. Students combine coursework with an internship that reflects their particular area of interest (such as American politics, international studies, history, the arts, public health, economics, the media, the environment, science and technology).

Students are free to pursue internships of their own choosing. They are coached in internship searching strategies as part of a prep class that is taken the semester before going to D.C. Students have interned at the White House, the Smithsonian, CNN, CBS, Public Defender’s Service, Washington Institute for Near East Policy, NAACP, The Brookings Institution, American Enterprise Institute, National Defense University, Partnership for Public Service, Center for American Progress, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and many others.
Funding is available.

Organized By: Organizational Learning

The 2018 U-M Management Conference provides a forum for the university’s managers, at all levels, to learn best practices, hone managerial skills and increase self-knowledge. It includes a keynote, breakouts and a panel session.

Keynote Speaker:
Jacob Morgan

Keynote:
The Future of Work is all About Employee Experience

We invest a great deal of time and money to improve employee engagement, yet our efforts often seem to miss the mark. How can that be? Jacob Morgan, one of the world’s foremost authorities on the future of work and employee engagement, uses his ongoing research of 252 organizations to show how short term “adrenaline shot” programs such as job sharing or working from home, aren’t necessarily the answer. He will demonstrate how the world’s top organizations are redesigning work around their people by focusing on three environments: culture, technology, and the physical workspace. He will share why employee experience is the next big area of investment, what the top organizations are doing, and how you can go about creating an Experiential Organization.

Trotter Lecture, with a particular focus on the intersecting identities of gender and race. We are beyond thrilled to welcome to the University of Michigan, speakers Janet Mock, author of Redefining Realness, Surpassing Certainty, and King Amiyah Scott of Fox Network’s STAR. Current and former students and staff from the University of Michigan will also contribute to this phenomenal event!
