She performs as part of a national tour to celebrate the release of her recording project "My Time Is Now," likewise performed on the Britton Recital Hall stage with pianist Alex Brown playing George Gershwin's own Steinway piano. Donated to the University and lovingly restored by SMTD's director of piano technology Robert Grijalva, this recording is the first by a U-M student to feature the instrument upon which the composer created such iconic works as Porgy and Bess. Lee and Brown will perform some of Jascha Heifetz's arrangements from the opera as well as works by contemporary composers that draw upon the Gershwin spirit, including works by Michigan composers such as William Bolcom, Michael Daugherty, and Patrick Harlin.

Mindfulness is the process of bringing a present-centered, intentional, and non-judgmental state of awareness to everyday experience. Emerging research suggests that practicing mindfulness may result in a number of beneficial outcomes for musicians, including improved focus, psychological resilience, and pro-social feelings and behaviors. But what do we truly know about mindfulness and its potential to transform our life and work? How can we separate the hype from the reality, and how might mindfulness fit into our already busy lives? In this talk, Diaz will discuss the promises and perils of mindfulness from his perspective as teacher, scholar, and practitioner of this ancient practice.

Diaz is associate professor of Music Education at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and an active scholar and teacher in the field of contemplative science. He is also affiliate faculty for IU’s Cognitive Science program and co-director of the Music and Mind Lab at Indiana. Diaz is the founder and director of the Institute for Mindfulness-Based Wellness and Pedagogy, where he collaborates with an international group of artists, educators, and scholars on disseminating research and best practices on the art of mindful living, teaching, and performance. Along with his work on mindfulness, Diaz maintains an active schedule as a performer, conductor, adjudicator, and clinician. His work on mindfulness has been published in top-tier music education and music psychology journals, and has been featured on NPR, The Huffington Post, and other local and national media outlets.

ABSTRACT

“'Cinematography' at the nanoscale, from colloidal crystallization to protein transformation"

I will discuss my group’s recent progress on applying low-dose liquid-phase TEM to synthetic and biological colloidal systems. In the first system, we directly image the otherwise elusive crystallization pathways of nanosized colloids into superlattices, where the discreteness and multi-scale coupling effects complicate the free energy landscape and the application forms of the final superlattices. We find that there exist similarities to the prevalent model system of micron-sized colloids, such as a non-classical two-step crystallization pathway, and an agreement with the capillary wave theory. But there are also differences, in particular, a universal layer-by-layer growth mode that we observe consistently for diverse nanoparticle shapes. Single particle tracking, trajectory analysis, and simulations combined unravel the energetic and kinetic features rendering this crystal growth mode possible and universal at the unexplored nanoscale, enabling advanced crystal engineering. In the second system, we sandwich and capture moving membrane proteins in their native lipid and liquid environment at nm resolution. The proteins exhibit real-time “fingering” fluctuations, which we attribute to dynamic rearrangement of lipid molecules wrapping the proteins. The conformational coordinates of protein transformation obtained from the real-space movies are used as inputs in our molecular dynamics simulations, to verify the driving force underpinning the function-relevant fluctuation dynamics. This platform invites an emergent theme of structural biophysics as we foresee.

Ripple Effect is an interactive art exhibition that visualizes local water quality data through sound, light, and water. Through software technology, water contamination data is translated into sound waves.

The installation consists of speakers that play the ‘data sound tracks’, which vibrate the water held in attached trays. The sonic vibrations create unique patterns to emerge in the water, known as water cymatics. Participants hear and see the water vibrate based on the chemical concentrations in their water samples.

Ripple Effect travels to communities that neighbor resource extraction activity and aims to transform the way people understand their data in relation to their environment.

ABSTRACT

Host–guest supramolecular recognition offers useful tools to create new materials with dynamic and controllable properties. Our lab has accessed an especially powerful synthetic macrocycle motif offering the broadest range of affinity in binding guests for any such known host. Through precise molecular engineering of these interactions, we can specifically probe the impact of host–guest affinity and concomitant dynamics on bulk properties of hydrogels. Tuning molecular-scale affinity affords an approach to controlling the bulk dynamics of the material, which translates to tunable release of encapsulated payloads, dictates the rate of cell infiltration, and controls the timeframe of material clearance in vivo. Certain of these host–guest interactions are furthermore able to achieve affinities approaching those of biotin-avidin, enabling recognition in complex or contaminated environments, and offering a new non-biological axis for drug homing and retention at desired sites in the body. This synthetic chemistry can also be integrated to enable communication, and perhaps even dynamic reciprocity, with the living world. The ability to recognize certain analytes affords logical application of these macrocycles in the context of detecting compounds of interest in complicated specimens. As such, the ability to leverage host–guest recognition over a broad spectrum of possible affinities affords a powerful means to control the properties of materials across length scales while also maximizing functionality in these materials.

This talk tells the story of a 2016 U.S. State Department–funded hip hop workshop in Bandung, Indonesia that brought together two communities of dancers, unintentionally generating conflict between the two. Working together for the first time, the two groups–b-boys (or breakdancers) and voguers–brought different views on choreography, fashion, gender, and sexuality into the workshop, differences that nearly led to the cancellation of a planned public performance. The U.S. facilitators were initially unaware of the conflict and were only able to avert disaster with the help of a local dancer who was serving as an interpreter. This case study opens up space to discuss a range of broader issues and subjects, including cross-cultural artistic collaboration, conflict transformation, diplomacy, gender constructions, queerness in dance, and the history of U.S. intervention abroad. The presentation draws on the author’s participation in and observation of the program, as well as interviews with U.S. and Indonesian participants. Photos and video of the workshop and performance will accompany the presentation.

Susan Walton, director

A distinguished musician from Java, Indonesia, Pak Widodo, will be leading the University of Michigan Gamelan Ensemble and two guest dancers in a performance of Javanese traditional music and dance. The elegant and refined dance movements depicting ancient epic stories will be accompanied by the traditional musical sounds of a full gamelan ensemble.

Often lauded as the pinnacle of aesthetic achievement in Indonesia, Javanese dance is one of the world’s great classical dance forms. Gamelan music has been indispensable to the important Javanese rituals and cultural forms throughout history. The glittering cast bronze instruments of the gamelan ensemble match every detail of the dancing with elaborate musical responses embedding ritualistic power.

This performance is sponsored by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, the Indonesian Government, the Residential College, and SMTD.

Gaelynn Lea won NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2016, and she’s been on the road ever since playing her unique mix of haunting original songs and traditional fiddle tunes. So far the singer-songwriter and violinist has appeared in 43 states and 7 countries – she’s graced the stage of renowned venues like Nashville’s Music City Roots, The Kennedy Center and House of Blues Chicago. Lea performs from her electric wheelchair. She began playing the violin 25 years ago after a creative music teacher helped her to adapt a playing style that suits her frame. Lea holds her instrument like a tiny cello and loops her classically trained rhythms and melodies with her Memory Man pedal to create a “symphonic cacophony that is both glorious in its reach and profoundly introspective,” Her original songs explore the contrasting nature of existence – dark and light, birth and death, anger and forgiveness, sorrow and joy. In addition to performing and recording, Lea also does speaking engagements about disability rights, finding inner freedom, and accessibility in the arts. In recent years, she has used her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change.

Abstract

Reading the human mind by electronic means used to be the domain of science fiction – and is still largely so. At the same time, technologies collectively labelled as brain-computer interfaces have moved forward, motivated by needs for assistive tools for neurologically impaired people and to advance our fundamental understanding of the brain. An applied example would be the use of electronic means to read out directly from the brain the intention to move an arm or a hand, and to decipher such signals to actuate an external robotic device. Another example is the
reading out brain signals produced when listening to or formulating speech. To access brain’s microcircuits at high space-time resolution requires implantation of electronic listening posts, call them nodes, at a number of nearby locations in a given functional area of the cortex. Which brings up the question of the day for neuroengineers: how many nodes might be required or are possible to implant, and how does one physically implement arrays of microscale electronic probes? What are the data rates involved in extracting brain signals and how to design a communication link to send the data onward for decoding by external computing platforms? What about reversing the direction of the process to use implanted probes to deliver signals directly into the brain (‘write-in’)? Through contemporary examples, this presentation will review recent accomplishments in the field from an electrical engineer’s viewpoint and discuss both the challenges and opportunities ahead to build next generations of brain-computer interfaces while explicitly exploiting many of the early 21st century advances in microelectronics, telecommunication, and high end computing.

David Barrett is the founder and CEO of Expensify, a fintech pioneer and industry giant with millions of users worldwide. A software engineer by trade, David takes a unique approach to hiring that focuses on life beyond code.

David started coding at age 6, spent middle school through college writing 3D graphics engines, and (several startups later) launched Expensify onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt in 2008. Unsatisfied with the Silicon Valley “pump and dump” playbook, David and the Expensify team instead built a profitable company that now
processes billions of dollars a month.

Recent technological advances have ushered artificial intelligence into everyday musical life, from Spotify predicting what songs you like to Google generating customized music with the click of a mouse to Amazon streaming AI-produced music through its virtual assistant Alexa. As AI moves from the research lab into the mass marketplace, debates have shifted from the philosophical to the pragmatic. Expansive questions probing consciousness and creativity have taken a backseat to corporate concerns about efficiency, price points, and scale. Whether AI will surpass the ability of human creativity has become less pressing than whether AI-generated music can be copyright protected. Most notably, to assuage anxieties sounded across the music world, industry leaders have come to embrace collaboration as a model for how AI can enhance, rather than replace, human creativity.

This presentation explores the mechanics and theorizes the challenges of computer-human interactivity through the lens of singer/songwriter Taryn Southern’s I AM AI (2018), billed as the first AI pop album. Co-produced with cutting-edge software developed by AIVA, Amper, Google, and IBM, the album reveals how AI helps to extend, automate, and supplement Southern’s musical abilities while enabling her to maintain claims of artistic agency. Recent writings on virtuality and interactivity, complemented by interviews with AI industry professionals and musicians who use AI, reveal similarly productive tensions involving collaboration, control, credit, and creative independence. Coming to terms with new forms of intelligence challenges us to explore how we characterize, distinguish, and understand musical relationships between human and virtual beings.

New York City-based new music chamber group loadbang is building a new kind of music for mixed ensemble of trumpet, trombone, bass clarinet, and baritone voice. Since their founding in 2008, they have been praised as ‘cultivated’ by The New Yorker, ‘an extra-cool new music group’ and ‘exhilarating’ by The Baltimore Sun, ‘inventive’ by The New York Times and called a 'formidable new-music force' by TimeOutNY. Creating 'a sonic world unlike any other' (The Boston Musical Intelligencer), their unique lung-powered instrumentation has provoked diverse responses from composers, resulting in a repertoire comprising an inclusive picture of composition today.
