The martial processional, Taech’wit’a, is preserved in South Korea through the maintenance of a limited and formulaic repertoire as Intangible Cultural Property 46. The revival of recent decades masks a break in performance at the beginning of the 20th century and a troubled initial redevelopment under Japanese colonial control. To do so, the identity enshrined in the Property designation, and the musical soundworld, has been reliant on iconography. But, the earliest iconographic representation Koreans have identified is in a 1600-year-old tomb on territory then home to a Chinese commandery, while some of the most elaborate depictions of martial music come down to us from Japanese sources. How are these sources interpreted to create something iconically Korean? This paper explores, for the first time, the procession of instruments in a previously unknown Japanese 12m-long hand scroll that has been attributed to Kanō Tōun Masunobu (1625-1694), the Chōsen shisetsu gyōretsu zukan, and the disguised musical activity in one of Hokusai’s (1760-1849) ‘100 Views of Mount Fuji’ woodblock prints. Neither depiction has to date been referenced by Korean musicologists. Both celebrate the extraordinary rather than the everyday: they date from a period when Korea’s relations with Japan were tightly controlled—over a 200-year period, Korea dispatched just 10 envoys to Japan, each following a regular, seasonal path. The hand scroll juxtaposes Japanese samurai and Korean musicians, while the second, where, a decidedly secular party replaces any martial overtones, dispenses with formality. To the Japanese artists, difference was tempered by their knowledge of Japanese musical practice, while Korean scholars examining the existing iconography (including tomb paintings), bring difference into alignment with a Korea-centered history. Using these significant new resources, the author explores how a specific martial music has travelled and transmigrated, and how it has been presented, re-presented, preserved and re-preserved.

Lecture co-sponsored by the Confucius Institute and the Nam Center for Korean Studies.

Processional Performance in celebration of the University's Bicentennial. Beginning at the Earl V. Moore Building Pond, the parade leads to the Duderstadt Tree Planting Ceremony.

12:00 p.m. pre-show begins; 12:45 p.m. tree planting.

Presented by Professors Christianne Myers and Michael Gurevich. The Huron River is a beautiful and defining feature of our city and the University. We try to control it as it meanders, tumbles, carves, and flows. It sustains, as it flows through us all. With the Huron River as a source of inspiration, fibers students in the Stamps School of Art & Design created fabrics and students of composition, electronic chamber music and puppetry have used those fabrics to create large processional puppets—some as kinetic instruments, some to take flight, and some to be underscored by sounds and music inspired by our environment. Presented with support from MCubed & The U-M Bicentennial.

In approaching the ten Beethoven sonatas as a whole, pianist Mimi Solomon and violinist Nicholas DiEugenio have commissioned the composers Allen Anderson, David Garner, Robert Honstein, Jesse Jones, and Tonia Ko to respond to specific pairings of sonatas in the context of various musical fabrics. Musical fabrics are comprised of the sonic threads that are woven together by a composer to produce a musical work’s aural tapestry. The commissioned composers will pull on a “loose thread” of Beethoven’s and reweave it.

Contemporary concerns in the performing arts include the complex issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and nurturing musician-citizens. Despite decades of rhetoric, funder investments, and endless well-intended initiatives, the goal of richly “colorful” artists and audiences in Western classical music remains elusive. Similarly, classical music institutions struggle to engage in authentic ways with diverse communities. As the music field at-large seeks to assure its relevance and value to humanistic and social well-being, initiatives must move beyond the superficiality of recruiting musicians of color into Western European practice and short-term pandering to audiences. This presentation will explore the ecological complex of curricular, performing, learning, and operational issues essential to access and equity, including active music-making and valuing across cultures and traditions. It will also consider how higher education can incubate collaborative models and strategies that lead, rather than follow, transformative change in professional practice.

Organized By: Multidisciplinary Design Program

The College of Engineering Design Expo is held twice a year to provide a public forum for engineering students to demonstrate applications of their studies to real-life needs. Students gain valuable experience by presenting their work.

Through this venue, the greater University community and general public has the opportunity to learn how Michigan's students are contributing in significant ways to solving major technology challenges across various disciplines.

Student groups that would like to present projects must register by November 6th, 2017 at 11:59 pm. If you have any questions, please contact Lindsey Dowswell in the Multidisciplinary Design Program office at lindsd@umich.edu or (734) 763-0818.

These student projects consist of internal University of Michigan projects, non-profit community projects and industry-sponsored projects. Most of these projects are part of Senior Design Project Courses, but other project groups are welcome and encouraged to participate.

The goal of the Undergraduate Engineering Office is to have participation from all departments within the College of Engineering (and eventually across university schools and colleges) to promote cross-disciplinary cooperation as well as high school outreach.

This event is held in multiple North Campus locations including the Duderstadt Center, Bob & Betty Beyster Building, Pierpont Commons, EECS Building, and Chrysler Center.

Location: BBB
Organized By: Multidisciplinary Design Program

See how Michigan Engineering students are designing solutions to our world's challenges.

Industry sponsors have been a large part of promoting this within the college through sponsorship of projects and financial support of the event itself.

The Fall 2017 Design Expo is sponsored by Toyota.

This event is held in multiple North Campus locations including the Duderstadt Center, Bob & Betty Beyster Building, Pierpont Commons, EECS Building, and Chrysler Center.

For more information, contact Lindsey Dowswell in the Multidisciplinary Design Program office at lindsd@umich.edu or (734) 763-0818.

Joseph Gramley, director
Featuring the Bowling Green State University Percussion Ensemble directed by SMTD alumnus Dan Piccolo.

In these concerts, the works performed by the U-M Percussion Ensemble have a special excitement, having been created by composers who searched for a compositional identity both within their native countries and outside of them. In doing so, they forged a “hybridity of identity.” Most notable of these is Lou Harrison, a true “American Musical Maverick,” who would have turned 100 this year. Featuring a large cross-section of Harrison's works, the Percussion Ensemble will also focus on both “canonic” and “newer” composers, almost all of whom have looked beyond their own homelands toward rhythms and techniques from foreign lands, including the other Americas, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, which they then married to their own ‘new’ traditions. There is a strong element of ‘tradition and innovation’ throughout the works.

Steven and Misa Mead began playing duets virtually as soon as they met, and their first concert as a duo  occurred just a few months after Misa arrived in the UK in 2013. Almost immediately they began to receive works from composers in the UK, in Europe and around the world, and some of these works are featured on their duet CD released in 2017, Love’s Joy.

Misa Mead was born in the city of Kumamoto, in the south west of Japan. She graduated from Tokyo College of Music in 2008. At both high school and university she was a scholarship student. Mead won the unanimous Gold Medal at the European Solo Competition for Young Soloists in Luxembourg 2011, as well winning the first prize at the 4th All-Japan Junior High and Senior High School Students Wind Instruments Solo Contest, 2000, and the 25th All Kyushu Music Competition Gold Award 2001. At the highly prestigious Jeju International Wind and Percussion Solo Competition 2012 and 2014, South Korea, she won third prize. Mead graduated with Honors at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris in 2012. She appeared as a guest artist in March 2013 at Tubamania Festivals in Thailand and May 2013 at the South West Region Tuba Euphonium Conference in California, USA, performing her own compositions. In 2013 she was appointed High School performance assistant at the Tokyo College of Music. She also worked closely with the Tokyo-based Spiel Kammerensemble.

Steven Mead is an English virtuoso euphonium soloist and teacher who has played an important role in achieving worldwide recognition of the instrument. He has played solo concerti with symphony orchestras, including: the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Helsinki Philharmonic, Capella Cracoviensis, the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra and the Japan Chamber Orchestra.

Creating Original Theatre is a Special Topics course for students from any discipline (including non-performance) who wish to explore ways of performing that are not restricted by traditional writing, producing or performing techniques. The studio class serves as a playground in which the performers find their own voices and create portmanteau pieces at the end of the semester. The styles might usually be referred to as Performance Art or Live Art. In the first half of the semester the students are led through weekly exercises or mini projects, creating small pieces driven by prompts from Professor Tulip. In the second half the students form small companies each of which are responsible for a 15 minute (and 22 seconds) performance window. There are no restrictions beyond no damage to the building, its fixtures and fittings or to other performers and the audience. Two of this year's pieces are in performance studios, the other two are in non-performance spaces.

This talk examines how Britten’s first and most famous opera, Peter Grimes (1945), undermined oppositions between modernist realism and difficulty on the one hand, and “cheap” and “easy” sentimentality on the other. After detailing attempts of early critics to stylize Grimes as an uncompromising modernist opera, which shocked and offended early audiences, the speaker uncovers the sentimental charms that they struggled to erase: its idealized vision of love, its melodramatization of good and evil, its compelling musical lyricism.

The creative explosion of the German Lied in the late 18th and early 19th centuries was ignited by the popularity of the fortepiano, along with Goethe and the great composers who set his poetry to music. Please join us for an evening of poetry and music, in which a number of settings of Goethe’s poetry will be performed, placing familiar Lieder by Schubert, Beethoven, and Mozart alongside their lesser-known contemporaries, Carl Friedrich Zelter and Johann Friedrich Reichardt. In the tradition of the Hauskonzert in the time of Schubert, the program will feature instrumental as well as vocal music, with SMTD Professor Berofsky performing Mozart’s Piano and Violin Sonata in B-flat, K.454.

NOMAS DESIGN REALITIES LECTURE AND PANEL: MICHAEL FORD, "HIP HOP ARCHITECTURE" (January 22, 2018 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/48713 48713-11294870@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, January 22, 2018 6:00pm
Location: Art and Architecture Building
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

The National Organization of Minority Architecture Students bring Michael Ford for their Design Realities lecture and panel. The event is co-hosted by the National Association of Minority Architects Detroit chapter.

Michael Ford is a designer, born and raised in the city of Detroit. Ford received his Masters of Architecture degree from the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM), where he completed his graduate thesis titled “Hip Hop Inspired Architecture and Design.” He has worked as a designer at Hamilton Anderson Associates located in Detroit and as an adjunct professor at his alma matter. Ford has also worked as a designer at Flad Architects located in Madison, Wisc.

Ford has spent the past decade working to blur the lines between professional practice and academia. He is dedicated to stimulating cross disciplinary discourse between practitioners and residents on the sociological and cultural implications of architecture and urban planning on its inhabitants. More specifically, Ford has unveiled the subconscious roles of historical architectural figures such as LeCorbusier in envisioning the built environments which necessitated the birth of hip hop culture.

Following Michael Fords lecture, there will be a panel discussion, Designed Realities: The Real World Impact of Design Intentions. Panelists include Taubman College faculty members Kimberly Dowdell, Emmanuel Pratt, June Manning Thomas, and moderator Marc Norman.

Ford’s Hip Hop Architecture research has been published in a variety of places including FastCo Design, Blavity, The Fader, CityLab and Vibe Magazine. In addition to this, Ford is the co-founder of the Urban Arts Collective, which houses the Hip Hop Architecture Camp, which has taken place in various cities across the United States. He has spoken as a keynote speaker for the 2017 AIA National Convention, for SXSW 2016 and 2017, TEDx Madison TED Talk, and has lectured at several universities including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Detroit-Mercy, UPenn, and Carnegie Mellon University.
