How do we connect research findings and data to clinical care? This is the first in a series of webinars connecting health research, data, and clinical care.

Please join us to learn about the role of learning health systems (LHS) in health care and precision health (PH). Discover more about the potential role of data science in clinical practice and research within different aspects of the learning cycle. You'll also hear about opportunities and limitations of current data infrastructure (including EHR data) for precision health, and implications of using EHR to support practice change, including clinical decision support. And you'll walk away understanding dimensions of data quality and possible metrics for assessing the quality of data for particular PH questions. Finally, this is an opportunity to understand the role of data governance and (clinically oriented) learning communities in data quality and precision health research.

This webinar, led by Gretchen Piatt, Associate Professor, LHS, and Rachel Richesson, Professor, LHS, is ideal for clinicians, students in all health sciences, researchers, and those in supporting roles.

Presentation 1
The Learning Health (Record) System

Speaker:
Philip R.O. Payne, PhD, FACMI, FAMIA, FAIMBE, FIAHSI
Janet and Bernard Becker Professor and Director, Institute for Informatics (I2), Associate Dean for Health information and Data Science, Chief Data Scientist, at Washington University in St. Louis

This presentation will explore the ways in Biomedical Data Science and Informatics research are helping to realize the potential of EHR technologies in the context of creating an LHS, from the optimization of workflow and human factors, to the generation of reproducible and systematic clinical phenotypes, to the delivery of emergent knowledge to both providers and patients via advance clinical decision support systems.

Presentation 2
Techniques and Challenges for EHR Phenotyping

Speaker:
Lisa Bastarache, MS
Research Associate Professor Department of Biomedical Informatics,
Vanderbilt University

Electronic health records (EHR) contain a wealth of real world data that can be used for research purposes. However, extracting phenotype information from EHRs can be challenging. EHR phenotyping can be divided into two types: (1) Fast phenotyping which seeks to capture a broad swath of the medical phenome, and is often accomplished using coded EHR data (e.g. billing codes) and (2) slow phenotyping that seeks to achieve high precision and recall for a single phenotype, and often uses multiple EHR data types (e.g. medications, text, lab results). This talk will describe specific use-cases for both fast and slow phenotyping, and review challenges that are commonly encountered in creating research-grade EHR phenotypes.

The world loves us when we are good, better, best, but what about when we get sick, lose someone we love, or life hasn't turned out like we thought is should? Duke Professor Kate Bowler offers a richer understanding of hope in the face of uncertainty, despair, and suffering as we being to understand that life is a chronic condition and there is no cure for being human.

Kate Bowler is a New York Times bestselling author, host of a podcast Everything Happens, and Duke University professor. After being unexpectedly diagnosed with Stage IV cancer at age 35, she wrote Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lies I've Loved), which tells the story of her struggle to understand the personal and intellectual dimensions of the American belief that all tragedies are tests of character. Her latest book, No Cure For Being Human (and Other Truths I Need to Hear), grapples with her diagnosis, her ambition, and her faith as she tries to comes to terms with limitations in a culture that says anything is possible.

Unlike structured data, unstructured data are often buried within free text clinical narratives that are difficult to analyze and interpret to derive useful insights. Free text cannot be easily categorized in the same way that a structured, numerical data point can, and unstructured data often have nuances that are not easily captured or represented in structured data.

This session will cover methods and techniques for interpreting and converting unstructured text into useful research data using two related, but distinct approaches: (1) Natural Language Processing (NLP), a specialized branch of AI focused on the interpretation and manipulation of human-generated spoken or written data; and (2) information retrieval, which often underlies many search engine technologies. This session will also highlight EMERSE, an open-source information retrieval tool that has been designed to help everyday users work with the free text documents (i.e., clinical notes) in medical records that is now being adopted by other academic medical centers.

Finally, attendees will hear directly from researchers about how they have used these methods and tools to enhance their research by accessing and harnessing the power of unstructured data.

The goal of the environmental research seminar/webinar is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for sharing and critiquing research proposals and preliminary study results.

Dr. Harris is a Research Assistant Professor of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. Dr. Harris earned his PhD in environmental toxicology from the University of Washington, where he conducted his dissertation research in male reproductive toxicology. As part of his research he helped to develop an in vitro testis cell culture model for studying male reproductive toxicants. He now studies female reproductive toxicology, using a combination of approaches including primary tissue culture models, transcriptomics and metabolomics to investigate molecular mechanisms of toxicant effects on the placenta and fetal membranes. His research aims to advance our understanding of how environmental toxicants contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Bayesian models for mercury effects on multiple outcomes in the Seychelles Child Development Study (November 2, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88561 88561-21655084@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 2, 2021 12:00pm

Sally W. Thurston, PhD is an Associate Professor of Biostatistics and Environmental Medicine, University of Rochester, Dept of Biostatistics and Computational Biology.

ABSTRACT: The Seychelles Child Development Study (SCDS) Main Cohort was recruited to investigate the association between prenatal mercury (Hg) exposure from maternal fish consumption and the children’s subsequent development. Multiple neurodevelopmental outcomes were measured at several discrete ages. These outcomes can be grouped into different classes or "domains", such as cognition, motor, or memory. Associations of Hg and covariates may differ across outcomes and domains. Motivated by the SCDS, I will first discuss a model for multiple outcomes at a single age under the assumption that each outcome belongs to one domain and domain memberships are known. I will then briefly describe two extensions: a model in which outcomes may have partial domain membership in more than one domain, and a longitudinal multiple outcomes model for cognition when the tests of cognition change with the age of the child.

The goal of Environmental Statistics Week is to disseminate knowledge of advanced statistical methods most relevant to environmental health research with expert-led discussions on statistical concepts.

How close and how much? Linking health outcomes to spatial distributions of built environment features (November 3, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88562 88562-21655085@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 3, 2021 12:00pm

Veronica Berrocal, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics, University of California at Irvine.

Built environment features (BEFs) refer to aspects of the human constructed environment, which may in turn support or restrict health related behaviors and thus impact health. In this talk we are interested in understanding whether the spatial distribution and quantity of fast food restaurants (FFRs) influence the risk of obesity in schoolchildren. Our analysis on the influence of patterns of FFR occurrence on obesity among Californian schoolchildren has indicated that, in 2010, among schools that are consistently assigned to a cluster, there is a lower odds of obesity amongst 9th graders who attend schools with most distant FFR occurrences in a 1-mile radius as compared to others.

The goal of Environmental Statistics Week is to disseminate knowledge of advanced statistical methods most relevant to environmental health research with expert-led discussions on statistical concepts.

Have you ever wondered why it is that people who desperately want to adopt physically active lifestyles don’t stick with them once their initial burst of motivation fades? This provocative presentation will showcase the science for a new paradigm to better foster sustainable behavior change. Dr. Michelle Segar will explain why logic-based reasons for behavior change (e.g., better health, disease prevention, etc.) keep people stuck in cycles of starting and stopping but not behavioral sustainability. Using a science-based story, she will describe a novel approach to promoting physical activity and other self-care behaviors that can be used across contexts (organizational, health care, fitness, coaching, etc.). Attendees will leave this session with a more strategic way to think about and promote the sustainable behavior necessary for achieving improved health and well-being.

Interoperability is considered a key capability of a high-performing healthcare system and has been a top policy priority for more than a decade. Implementing interoperability is, however, a complex undertaking – requiring stakeholder coordination that tackles incentives, governance, technology, standards, and more. In this talk, Dr. Adler-Milstein will describe current approaches to interoperability and where we stand with respect to current levels of national adoption. She will then discuss the implications for Learning Health System efforts at different levels of scale.

Sister Helen Prejean is known around the world for her tireless work against the death penalty. She has been instrumental in sparking national dialogue on capital punishment and in shaping the Catholic Church’s vigorous opposition to all executions.

Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the 1930s, Sister Helen grew up in the segregated Jim Crow South. At the age of 18 she joined the Sisters of St. Joseph. She worked as a high school teacher and religious education director in New Orleans before moving into the St. Thomas Housing Project in the early ’80s.

In 1982, Sister Helen began corresponding with Patrick Sonnier, who had been sentenced to death for the murder of two teenagers. Two years later, when Patrick Sonnier was put to death in the electric chair, Sister Helen was there to witness his execution. In the following months, she became spiritual advisor to another death row inmate, Robert Lee Willie, who was to meet the same fate as Sonnier.

After witnessing these executions, Sister Helen realized that this lethal ritual would remain unchallenged unless its secrecy was stripped away, and so she sat down and wrote a book, Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States. That book ignited a national debate on capital punishment and spawned an Academy Award winning movie, a play, and an opera.

Sister Helen’s second book, The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions, was published in 2004; and her third book, River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey, in August, 2019. She is currently collaborating on a graphic retelling of Dead Man Walking, to be published by Random House.

Unstructured clinical data, such as clinical notes and reports, along with the computational infrastructure and tools, have seen an increasing demand from the research community in the last years, mostly fueled by recent advances in statistical and machine-learning approaches to data insight. We are meeting this demand with the Information Commons – a research data platform that hosts and provides direct access to de-identified data, advanced analytics tools, and computational environments for our research community.

While we are realizing access to de-identified electronic health records, images, omics and biobank data, this session highlights the progress made to provide more than 110 million de-identified notes to the research community. We developed and operationalized a fully automatic de-identification algorithm and implemented EMERSE, a user-friendly tool for non-programmatic access and sophisticated textual searches on the de-identified clinical notes.

As of December 2021 Our de-identification algorithm and our clinical notes are certified de-identified and are currently available for the UCSF researchers with IRD. The presentation covers the entire pipeline from data extraction to publication and data access focusing on the secured computational infrastructure. Furthermore, we discuss the rigorous evaluation techniques to ensure the quality of the deidentification process and the resulting data according to HIPAA and UCSF Security and Privacy protection requirements. Lastly, we showcase highlights from our research collaborations enabled by this new resource of machine-redacted, unstructured clinical notes linked with de-identified structured EHR data using EMERSE and their impact on the research community.

The University of Michigan M-LEEaD Center is co-sponsoring a virtual event to discuss the bipartisan legislation called the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. This reform law was designed to modernize the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and U.S. industrial chemical policy to promote health, but has it lived up to its promise?

Toxic chemicals can harm our health as these substances are present in everyday products (e.g., cleaning products, cookware, housing and infrastructure materials, bedding, toys). Unlike pharmaceuticals, industrial and commercial chemicals are rarely tested for safety before they reach the U.S. market. However, amended TSCA gave the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency new authorities to require manufacturers provide the data needed for risk assessments. People expect the outcomes of implementing our environmental laws to be equitable health protection for the public from environmental harms. Yet, key components of risk evaluations seem complex and thus inaccessible to the public. Our goal is to demystify the process of assessing the science to move toward evidence-based safeguards communities want for public health.

Our virtual event will examine key issues from a series of recent scientific workshops. We will present a case study of applying the principles to treating cancer and non-cancer health effects in similar manners in the risk assessment for the chemical perchloroethylene (PCE). We will explore the use of probabilistic assessments in TSCA risk evaluations. The amended TSCA gave the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency new requirements and authorities. The public health impact points to the need for the U.S. EPA to fully use its new powers to evaluate all risks from hazardous chemicals and set policies which protect health and are accountable to high-risk communities. Preventive actions are urgently needed.

Speakers and discussants include:
* Regina Strong (Office of the Environmental Justice Public Advocate for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE));
* Wilma Subra (Technical Director, Louisiana Environmental Action Network);
* Wendy Heiger-Bernays, PhD (Clinical Professor, Department of Environmental Health, Boston University);

Ipek Bilgen and Amelia Burke-Garcia - The Use of Advanced Social Media Targeting Methodology During Recruitment of Hard-to-Reach Audiences (March 9, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/91859 91859-21683564@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 9, 2022 12:00pm

The Use of Advanced Social Media Targeting Methodology During Recruitment of Hard-to-Reach Audiences
Ipek Bilgen and Amelia Burke-Garcia

One of the major benefits of social media ad-based survey recruitment is the use of various types of data to target ads to users of these platforms. To target users of social media, researchers can use the basic demographic and geographic that social media platforms currently provide, or they can use enhanced data that can be embedded within the social media platforms supplied by third party providers based on external data sources, e.g., historical purchase data. We will examine whether and how much this enhanced data can impact ad based social media recruitment capabilities to reach niche and hard-to-reach audiences.

To investigate the targeting efficiency, quality, and cost differences among these two approaches that can be used to target audiences within social media platforms, NORC piloted a strategic initiative research study in 2020. A web survey was constructed using existing items from national surveys on individual’s health and online habits, as well as new items related to life changes during the pandemic. Two main audience groups that are generally hard to recruit through probability-based studies were targeted – young adults, ages 18-24, and people with low education (defined as anyone who has completed high school as the highest level of education or lower). Five sets of tailored ads with unique URLs that linked to a web-based survey were designed and launched via Facebook and Instagram. Two sets used basic targeting to recruit the sample and the other three used the enhanced targeting. This brown bag will present the design of the study, our approach to the ads and targeting, and what we learned through our examination of the differences between the samples obtained from basic and advanced targeting on the dimensions of recruited sample composition, survey estimates, and recruitment costs.

Dr. Ipek Bilgen is a Senior Research Methodologist in the Methodology and Quantitative Social Sciences (MQSS) Department at NORC at the University of Chicago. Bilgen is AmeriSpeak Panel’s lead research methodologist. She also directs web and emerging technologies strategic initiative at NORC. She has over a decade of experience in applied survey methods and received both her Ph.D. and M.S. from the Survey Research and Methodology (SRAM) Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Bilgen has published and co-authored articles in Journal of Official Statistics, Public Opinion Quarterly, Survey Practice, Social Currents, Social Science Computer Review, Field Methods, SAGE Research Methods, and Quality and Quantity on issues related to interviewing methodology, web surveys, internet sampling and recruitment approaches, cognition and communication, and measurement error in surveys. Her current research investigates panel recruitment and retention, total survey error sources in probability-based online panels, the use of web and emerging technologies in surveys, and questionnaire design and survey implementation issues. Her research also examines studies related to the use of auxiliary data for improved efficiency in surveys that use address-based sampling (ABS) and active survey recruitment through social media and search engines.

Bilgen is currently serving as Associate Editor of Public Opinion Quarterly (POQ). In the past, she has served as an elected member of American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR)’s Executive Council as Membership and Chapter Relations Chair. She has also served on Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research (MAPOR)’s Executive Council as President, Vice President, Conference Chair, and Secretary Treasurer.

Dr. Amelia Burke-Garcia is a seasoned health communications professional with nearly 20 years of experience in health communication program planning, implementation and evaluation, with specific expertise in developing and evaluating digital and social media communication and research. At NORC, she leads the organization's Digital Strategy and Outreach Program Area, where she designs, develops, and implements new digital and mobile data collection methodologies and communication solutions. Most recently, she acted as director for the award-winning How Right Now/Que Hacer Ahora campaign, which is aimed at increasing people’s ability to cope and be resilient amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. She currently leads two grants focused on exploring vaccine hesitancy amongst communities of color which build on her earlier work exploring messages and motivations of vaccine hesitant or refusing social media influencers (findings from which were published in Vaccine in 2020). Over the course of her career, Dr. Burke-Garcia has spearheaded some of the most innovative communication programs and studies on a variety of health topics including designing a targeted social media intervention with mommy bloggers to help social media users lower their risk for breast cancer and leveraging MeetUp groups and the Waze mobile application to move people to action around flu vaccination and HIV testing, respectively. She is the author of the book entitled, Influencing Health: A Comprehensive Guide to Working with Online Influencers and has been named to VeryWellHealth.com’s list of 10 Modern Female Innovators Shaking Up Health Care. She holds a PhD in Communication from George Mason University, a Master’s degree in Communication, Culture, and Technology from Georgetown University, and a joint honours Bachelor’s degree in International Development Studies and Humanistic Studies from McGill University.

BioArtography Booth at the Ann Arbor Art Fair (July 21, 2022 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/96071 96071-21791886@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, July 21, 2022 10:00am
Location:
Organized By: BioArtography

BioArtography will be in South University Booth SU1109 (Between E. Univ. and Church) the Ann Arbor Art Fair! 13 spectacular new images for 2022 will be making their debut!

Every day at the University of Michigan, scientists from many fields work together to study organism development, function and disease. While the goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world around us, many are also taking the time to share the beauty of their work with others through a program called BioArtography. In the course of research, scientists use special stains to add color to the otherwise transparent tissues. Microscopes then allow detailed observation of the tiny, colorful biological structures revealed in these images. This results in a fascinating combination of art and science that U-M researchers are capturing in pictures taken through microscopes and turning into artworks that would look beautiful on any wall.

The goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world that surrounds us. Proceeds from the sale of this work help support the training of our next generation of researchers. Past BioArtography sales have raised enough money to send more than 100 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to scientific conferences, where they can present their work to other scientists and make connections that can help them launch their careers in research and industry.

Throughout the year BioArtography images (a collection of over 250) can be viewed and ordered online at www.bioartography.com
