Susan Eisenberg, 2016 Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist, returns to Ann Arbor to share her virtual exhibit titled On Equal Terms: Gender and Solidarity.

Her multimedia work chronicles the experiences of women working in trade and union positions and how they navigate sexism and discrimination in male-dominated workplaces. Featured in her virtual exhibit will include a 6 minute video of Stella, a life-sized composite figure of women working on a ladder. Her (Stella) work uniform is decorated by actual statements from women's harassment while on the job site. Susan's virtual exhibit will fully launch April 8, 2018 during the 40th anniversary of the federal affirmative action guidelines that opened construction jobs to women.

In addition to her work On Equal Terms, Susan has published poetry including Stanley's Girl and the 20th anniversary edition of We'll Call You If We Need You: Experiences of Women Working Construction (published through Cornell University Press).

The Complete Poetry of Aimé Césaire gathers all of Cesaire’s celebrated verse into one bilingual edition. The French portion is comprised of newly established first editions of Césaire’s poetic œuvre made available in French in 2014 under the title Poésie, Théâtre, Essais et Discours, edited by A. J. Arnold and an international team of specialists. To prepare the English translations, the translators started afresh from this French edition. Included here are translations of first editions of the poet’s early work, prior to political interventions in the texts after 1955, revealing a new understanding of Cesaire’s aesthetic and political trajectory. A truly comprehensive picture of Cesaire’s poetry and poetics is made possible thanks to a thorough set of notes covering variants, historical and cultural references, and recurring figures and structures, a scholarly introduction and a glossary. This book provides a new cornerstone for readers and scholars in 20th century poetry, African diasporic literature, and postcolonial studies.

Clayton Eshleman is the author of over one hundred books, and the major American translator of Césaire

Keith Taylor teaches at the University of Michigan. He has published many books over the years: collections of poetry, a collection of very short stories, co-edited volumes of essays and fiction, and a volume of poetry translated from Modern Greek.

Paul Dimond on “The Belle of Two Arbors": Researching the Historical Novel in Three Ann Arbor Libraries (September 13, 2017 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/42552 42552-9611965@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 13, 2017 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: University Library

A sweeping saga told in the voice of an unforgettable heroine, "The Belle of Two Arbors" brings two places vividly to life: a growing “downstate” town driven by a public university striving for greatness, and a small “up north” community seeking prosperity while preserving its natural heritage. Spanning the first half of the twentieth century, Belle’s remarkable story is interweaved with accounts of historical events as well as memorable appearances by some of our favorite poets, including Emily Dickinson, W. H. Auden, and Robert Frost.

Paul Dimond will talk about his experience conducting research for his first novel at the Ann Arbor District Library, the Bentley Historical Library, and the Special Collections Library in the University of Michigan’s University Library. He will be accompanied by Martha (Marty) Buhr Grimes, who wrote the poems that are Belle’s in the novel.

Paul and Marty are lifelong Ann Arbor residents who share a passion for poetry, their hometown, and Lake Michigan.

ASP Lecture | Armenian Riddles: Learning How to Read with Medieval Poetry (September 20, 2017 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/42035 42035-9527919@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 20, 2017 4:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall

The 12th century catholicos Nerses Shnorhali faced a crisis: how would he address his flock, seemingly scattered to the ends of the earth, in an accessible and enticing language? And how would he combat popular forms of entertainment, such as the "useless" songs and poetry that circulated in medieval Cilicia, that had no didactic value at a time when he felt Christianity under siege from within and without?

This talk will examine the large body of riddles that Shnorhali composed in Middle Armenian, which had only recently developed as a literary or poetic language. Although Shnorhali's poetic compositions in Classical Armenian depict an absolute opposition to the Islamicate world, his riddles, themselves riddled with Arabic and Persian loan words, tell a more nuanced story. This story would have unfolded at wedding feasts and in wine taverns: boisterous affairs where riddle-reciters playfully teased, corrected, offered hints, and guided their audience to seize upon a correct reading of ambiguous, versified language. Such performances served as popular exercises in hermeneutics, teaching an audience to extract hidden correspondences in the Book of the World. These riddles stand at the threshold of a broader sea-change in Armenian letters: a new poetics, and a covert hermeneutics, that would spread everywhere Armenians lived.

Michael Pifer’s research and writing focus on the connective tissues that run through Armenian, Persian, and Turkish literary cultures, particularly in medieval Anatolia, but also beyond. He received his PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan in 2014, which awarded him the ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award. His current book project, tentatively titled "Kindred Voices: A Literary History of Medieval Anatolia, 1250-1350," seeks to uncover shared cultures of poetic adaptation across Christian and Muslim communities in the pre-modern Mediterranean, as well as to reexamine the manner in which we approach literary history today. This project was supported by a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2016-17.

OUR STORY
FOKUS increases the awareness of and access to art disciplines by providing unique ways for people of all ages to access the arts. Our primary goal is not to create the next famous artists but simply to allow individuals to understand what their creative talents are and apply this knowledge to their educational, professional and personal life. We create and expose communities to the arts through arts education, community art events, and an online magazine. This helps people understand their innate creativity and develop their talents so that they can maximize their potential for future success. The arts teach you how to create something from nothing and this innovative trait is what leads to success.

The Film
From Executive Producer Russell Simmons and Director Jason Zeldes, comes an award-winning documentary following Donté Clark, a young poet transcending the violence in his hometown by writing about his experiences. Growing up in Richmond, CA, a city haunted by a fatal turf war, Donté and the like-minded youth of the city mount an urban adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with the hope of starting a dialogue about violence in the city. Will Richmond crush Donté’s idealism? Or will Donté end Richmond’s cycle of trauma?

The cities of Berlin and Detroit are full of amazing artists. Very much in the same way in which Berlin was regarded as the subcultural capital of the world some 15 or 20 years ago, when artists were flocking to it because of affordable space, bringing with them an incredible energy and of course many talents and abilities, you can feel a certain kind of energy when you travel to Detroit these days. It is rough and at the same time interesting and beautiful. Grimy and at the same time elegant and free. It is a place where devastation is still visible alongside new opportunities. Opportunities for artists, activists and resistance movements to help turn the city into the magnificent place it could be in order to make things better for all of its residents.

From September 11th to September 20th, 2016 artists from Berlin and Detroit, poets, emcees, singer/songwriters, beat producers, came together in Detroit in order to get to know one another and to create. During that period, they also visited the University of Michigan and ran workshops and Q&A sessions with our students. In June of 2017, they got back together, this time in Berlin in order to present what had been created in Detroit, including an album, music videos, and a documentary about the visit. For more information, please visit the project website at http://be-troit.com/, and the Be-Troit blog at http://gangway.de/en/betroit-blog-jugendaustausch-berlin-detroit-vom-11-24-9-2016/; a trailer for the documentary is at https://vimeo.com/215179507.

Now a delegation returns to present the amazing work that came out of this unique collaboration between Berlin- and Detroit-based artists. Please join us for a screening of Philip Halver’s inspiring documentary, artist performances, and a Q&A with BeTroit participants.

This event is free and open to the public.

The World and Work of Emily Dickinson (October 2, 2017 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/42398 42398-9601894@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 2, 2017 10:00am

Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Through lecture, discussion, and close analysis, we will explore the work of Emily Dickinson, arguably the greatest American poet. When Henry David Thoreau was asked why he never traveled, he replied “I have traveled much in Concord.” Emily Dickinson also traveled much in her own home of Amherst, MA. Her narrow, private world was actually immensely wide and universal. Her small, focused poems expand our view of the world and of ourselves.

This study group for those 50 and above will meet for two hours on Mondays October 2 and October 9 led by instructor Joel Nydahl.

University and community members join forces to deliver a message about climate change through the arts. Featuring cello major Kayla Mathes, who will perform a piece she has written on climate change; poet Sandra Steingraber; and Sara Adlerstein-Gonzalez, who will formally open an art exhibit she’s curated on climate change.

Sara Adlerstein-Gonzalez, PhD, has been a research faculty member at the School for Environment and Sustainability the University of Michigan for fourteen years. Her research program is centered on Great Lakes applied aquatic ecology, with emphasis on population assessments and ecosystem dynamics. She has authored over 50 peer review publications in scientific journals. Dr. Adlerstein is also a visual artist and she is involved with numerous projects bridging the arts and environmental sciences with particular focus on the role of art in conservation. One of her contributions to art and conservation is the creation of the Art & Environment Gallery in SEAS, where she is director and curator. Dr. Adlerstein is an artist member of the WSG gallery in Ann Arbor and her work is part of public and private collections in countries around the world. Her artwork is featured in Poemas de las Madres (Eastern Washington University Press, 1996).

Kayla Mathes is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan pursuing a double degree in cello performance and environmental science. She was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and came to Michigan specifically for the music program in pursuit of becoming a professional musician. Half way through her college career, she discovered a new passion for ecology and environmental sciences which has since taken her down a very different path. She now hopes to pursue a career as a forest ecology researcher and teacher.

Biologist, author, and cancer survivor, Sandra Steingraber, PhD, writes about climate change, ecology, and the links between human health and the environment. Steingraber’s highly acclaimed book, Living Downstream: An Ecologist’s Personal Investigation of Cancer and the Environment, was the first to bring together data on toxic releases with data from US cancer registries and was adapted for the screen in 2010. This panel will focus on the university’s historical role in climate change science and the current political and social impacts of climate change. Featuring panelists:

Benjamin Iuliano (Undergraduate Student, Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity, University of Michigan)
Stephen Mulkey (President Emeritus, Unity College)
Theresa Ong (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, National Science Foundation)
Sandra Steingraber (Distinguished Scholar in Residence, Ithaca College)

Ben Iuliano is a senior at the University of Michigan studying ecology, evolution, and biodiversity, with a minor in food and the environment. In his time at Michigan, Ben has been a student activist affiliated with a variety of groups including Science for the People, the Michigan Student Power Network, and the U-M fossil fuel divestment campaign (Divest and Invest). During the 2015-2016 school year, he served as a student leader for Divest and Invest, overseeing campaign successes including the approval of a Faculty Senate Assembly Resolution and campaign endorsement by the Michigan Daily. Ben has published research on pollinator ecology in urban agroecosystems, and serves as the sustainable food, healthy communities program assistant at the Ecology Center in Ann Arbor.

As a scholar of the interdisciplinary literature in environmental science, Stephen Mulkey is an active public interpreter of climate change and sustainability. His recent research focuses on the role of landscape carbon stocks in climate mitigation and on the academic structure of interdisciplinary programs in the environmental and sustainability sciences. From 2011 to 2015, he served as president of Unity College in Maine, a four-year liberal arts institution dedicated to sustainability science.

Theresa Wei Ying Ong, PhD, is a recent University of Michigan Ecology and Evolutionary Biology alum, where she worked with John Vandermeer. Currently, she is a NSF postdoctoral research fellow. She is broadly interested in theoretical agroecology, especially in the setting of urban gardens. Her work focuses on how biocomplexity influences the resilience of these agricultural systems to both ecological and political perturbations. Her scientific work has been published in Nature Communications, and in news outlets including Science Daily. Theresa has helped to organize many political and scientific events at U of M including the Climate Teach-In +50: End the War Against the Planet, the Early Career Scientists Symposium on Humans as a Force of Ecological and Evolutionary Change and the symposium in honor of John Vandermeer: Science with Passion and a Moral Compass. She is a graduate of the Frontiers Masters Program, an initiative to diversify the field of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and a proud member of Science for the People.

As both book and documentary film, Living Downstream has won praise from international media. A contributing essayist and editor for Orion magazine, Sandra Steingraber is currently a distinguished scholar in residence at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York.

Presence as Profanation: German Naturalism's Anti-Apotheoses (October 11, 2017 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/44777 44777-9977683@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 11, 2017 2:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

This talk will examine the short life of German naturalism through a look at the early work of Arno Holz. More even than his literary heroes Émile Zola and Henrik Ibsen, Holz draws on a particular aesthetics of presence with roots in the theater’s placing of real bodies on a real stage in real time. However, Holz’s writings also actively work to destroy any sense of the auratic quality of such presence — not to mention, of art as “Verklärung,” as proposed by the practitioners of German realism and pugnaciously argued against by Holz in his own theoretical works. This talk will examine both the weirdness and the prescience of Holz’s attempts at an anti-apotheotic art in the context of the era’s debates around naturalism vis-à-vis realism, looking also at the fraught legacy of the theater in Germany and the residues of the Baroque stage on the cusp of literary modernism.

Weitzman's book Irony’s Antics: Walser, Kafka, Roth and the German Comic Tradition (Northwestern University Press, 2015) explores the crucial but largely neglected role of the comic and its relation to irony in German-language literature from the Romantic era to the early twentieth century, through an examination of the works of Robert Walser, Franz Kafka, and Joseph Roth, and theories of comedy in Freud, Hegel, and others.

She is also co-editor and contributing author of the volume Suspensionen. Über das Untote (Fink, forthcoming), which considers “the undead” as a figure that challenges not only the life/death binary but also the regimes of knowledge that this structures.

Her current project, tentatively titled “At the Limit of the Obscene: Realism, Profanation, Aesthetics,” deals with how the concept of obscenity relates to questions of representation, perception, and knowledge in nineteenth-century German and European realism and beyond.

About Unlikely Designs
A collection intent on worrying the boundaries between natural and unnatural, human and not, Unlikely Designs draws far-ranging source material from the back channels of knowledge-making: the talk pages of Wikipedia, the personal writings of Charles Darwin, the love advice doled out by chatbots, and the eclectic inclusions on the Golden Record time capsule. It is here we discover the allure of the index, what pleasure there is in bending it to our own devices. At the same time, these poems also remind us that logic is often reckless, held together by nothing more than syntactical short circuits—well, I mean, sorry, yes—prone to cracking under closer scrutiny. Returning us again and again to these gaps, Katie Willingham reveals how any act of preservation is inevitably an act of curation, an outcry against the arbitrary, by attempting to make what is precious also what survives.

One MFA student of fiction and one of poetry, each introduced by a peer, will read their work. The Mark Webster Reading Series presents emerging writers in a warm and relaxed setting. We encourage you to bring your friends - a Webster reading makes for an enjoyable and enlightening Friday evening.

This week's reading features Kristin Nelson, Jeffrey Henebury, and Jonathan Holland.

Kristin Nelson is a fellow of the strangest mind in the world. She delights in masques and revels sometimes altogether.

Jeff Henebury is a fiction writer. A Massachusetts native and Minnesotan transplant currently studying at the University of Michigan, he hopes to visit every M-state at least once.

Jon Holland has split his life between the Midwest and South. Recently graduated from Indiana University, he has facilitated art and writing groups in community centers, transitional houses, and a jail. He is currently grateful for his partner, his two three-legged cats (Wallace and Wallace Jr.), his garden, and for all of this.

Penny Arcade: Longing Lasts Longer (October 21, 2017 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/42267 42267-9593301@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, October 21, 2017 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Special Event: Saturday, October 21, 7 pm at Wasserman Projects: http://wassermanprojects.com/

Penny Arcade is an internationally respected performance artist, actress, poet, and theater maker. Her work is a cultural critique on class, race, and identity that has always focused on the other and the outsider. She is an original member of New York’s seminal rock and roll, political theater The Playhouse of the Ridiculous and was a teenage superstar in Andy Warhol’s Factory. She grew up to make her own work, sustaining a career of almost 50 years. With her longtime collaborator of 25 years, Steve Zehentner, she also co-helms the Lower East Side Biography Project Stemming The Tide Of Cultural Amnesia, a video documentary project that has broadcast and cybercast weekly for 18 years. For her Penny Stamps event, Arcade will perform her show Longing Lasts Longer (a double award-winner at the Edinburgh Festival), which turns contemporary stand-up on its head to create a crack in the post-gentrified landscape. Driven by her magnetic rock and roll energy, Arcade’s razor-sharp satire is mixed live to euphoric soundscapes inspired by four decades of pop culture.

In partnership with Wasserman Projects.

All Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series presentations are free and open to the public; visit http://stamps.umich.edu/stamps to view upcoming events.

Monica Youn is the author of three books of poetry: Blackacre (Graywolf Press, 2016); Barter(Graywolf Press, 2003); and Ignatz (Four Way Books, 2010), which was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including the New Yorker, the Paris Review, and the New York Times Magazine, and she has been awarded fellowships from the Library of Congress and Stanford University, among other awards. A former attorney, she now teaches poetry at Princeton University and at the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers. She previously taught at Bennington College, Columbia University, and at the Sarah Lawrence College MFA Program. Youn’s poetry has been described as “interested in the intersection between the beauty we want in life, and the darkness that often serves as an invisible barrier for it,” with her background in law allowing her to “probe and navigate these gray areas gently, using an economy of language that both cuts to the heart of the matter and reveals nuanced layers of caution, lust, and desperation.”

One of the most prolific American writers of the 20th century, Joyce Carol Oates counts historical biographies, depictions of working class families, and magical realist Gothic fiction among her oeuvre. She often depicts hardships and violence in American towns, and has received both critical and popular acclaim in her 50-year career. Oates is the author of over 70 books, including the novels them (1969), winner of the National Book Award; Bellefleur (1980); You Must Remember This (1987); Because It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart (1990); We Were the Mulvaneys (1996); Blonde (2000), winner of the National Book Award; The Gravedigger’s Daughter (2007); and The Accursed (2013). Her short stories and essays have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Atlantic, and Harper’s, and have been widely anthologized. In an interview for the Paris Review, she says: “I try to write books that can be read in one way by a literal-minded reader, and in quite another way by a reader alert to symbolic abbreviation and parodistic elements. And yet, it's the same book—or nearly. A trompe l'oeil, a work of ‘as if.’”

Since the publication of his first volume of verse, Turtle, Swan, in 1987, MARK DOTY has been recognized as one of the most accomplished poets in America. Hailed for his elegant, intelligent verse, Doty has often been compared to James Merrill, Walt Whitman and C.P. Cavafy. His syntactically complex and aesthetically profound free verse poems, odes to urban gay life, and quietly brutal elegies to his lover, Wally Roberts, have been hailed as some of the most original and arresting poetry written today. The recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, Doty has also won a number of prestigious literary awards, including the Whiting Writer’s Award, the T. S. Eliot Prize, the National Poetry Series, the Los Angeles Times Book Award, the National Book Critics’ Circle Award, the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for first nonfiction, and the National Book Award for Fire to Fire: New and Selected Poems (2008). A long-time resident of Provincetown, Massachusetts, Doty teaches at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Described by John Updike as an “ambitious, resourceful novelist,” FERNANDA EBERSTADT is the author of Low Tide, Isaac and His devils, When the Sons of Heaven Meet the Daughters of the Earth, The Furies, and Rat. The New York Times Book Review praised Rat as “shrewd and sensuous,” hailing “Eberstadt's preoccupation with "the footloose life of the wilfully dispossessed" and writes that "in her novels, idealists and fast trackers wrestle with thorny problems of love and social identity." In 1998, Eberstadt went to live on a vineyard in the French Pyrenees, outside the city of Perpignan. She became friends with a family of French gypsy musicians. Her first work of non-fiction, Little Money Street—In Search of Gypsies and Their Music in the South of France, which portrays that friendship, was released by Knopf in March 2006. Eberstadt also writes extensively for The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Vogue, and Vanity Fair.

This panel of U-M faculty members will discuss Petra Kuppers’ recent poetry collection, PearlStitch (Spuyten Duyvil Press, 2016) as part of IRWG's Gender: New Works, New Questions series.

Participants:
Petra Kuppers (Author), Professor of English, Women's Studies, Art and Design, and Theatre
Naomi Andre, Associate Professor of Women's Studies, Afroamerican and African Studies, and Associate Director for Faculty at the Residential College
Melanie Yergeau, Associate Professor of English Language and Literature

“A pearl stitch is a chain stitch, also known as the basque knot. In this garlandy chain of poems, Petra Kuppers interknits a mythology of heroines, natural wonders, marvelously slippery identities, personal struggles and exultations, but also acknowledges the violence by which text-making and life-making takes place in our world, whereby the “endless piston that drives the needle into the skin,” looping and connecting, is also the mechanism of our most elaborate cultural efflorescence. A beautiful meditation on the labor of making at all levels, PearlStitch stabs out a love letter to the love that fuels our creative surges in spite of all urges toward its perversion by capital” - Maria Damon“A pearl stitch is a chain stitch, also known as the basque knot. The Russian Revolution of 1917 was an earthshaking event, the first time in history the working class and oppressed took power. It opened up a new era in human history. The Revolution inevitably had the most profound implications for art and culture, not only in Russia but worldwide. It shattered old ideas and relationships, and opened up enormous new possibilities. Soviet art and film of the early 1920s began to reflect these possibilities, before the rise of Stalinism violently cut them off.

Art today has reached an impasse, bound up with the general crisis of capitalist society. Dominated to a large extent by skepticism and postmodernist cynicism, along with gender and racial politics, very far removed from the conditions of life of wide layers of the population, art needs a new perspective. The lessons and experience of the Russian Revolution are critical in this regard.

David Walsh, arts editor of the World Socialist Web Site, will discuss the impact and influence of the Russian Revolution on art and culture, and their meaning today.

Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

As part of the university's honoring of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Audre Lorde - The Berlin Years 1984 - 1992
MONDAY JANUARY 15, 2018
6:00 pm Hatcher Library Gallery

Audre Lorde’s incisive, often-angry, always brilliant writings and speeches defined and inspired the US-American feminist, lesbian, African-American, and Women-of-Color movements of the 1970s and 1980s. Audre Lorde - the Berlin Years 1984 to 1992 documents an untold chapter of Lorde’s life: her influence on the German political and cultural scene during a decade of profound social change. The film explores the importance of Lorde’s legacy, as she encouraged Afro-Germans—who, at that time, had no name or space for themselves—to make themselves visible within a culture that until then had kept them isolated and silent.

The film chronicles Lorde’s empowerment of Afro-German women to write and to publish, as she challenged white women to acknowledge the significance of their white privilege and to deal with difference in constructive ways. Previously unreleased archive material as well as present-day interviews explore the lasting influence of Lorde’s ideas on Germany and the impact of her work and personality. For the first time, Dagmar Schultz’s personal archival video- and audio-recordings reveal a significant part of the private Audre Lorde as well as her agenda—to rouse Afro-Germans to recognize each other.

The speaker will argue that in Shah Ismail’s poetic corpus, we are faced with a peculiar combination of divinization of ‘Ali, monism, and a firm focus on the salvific community united with the love of ‘Ali and allegiance to the Safavid shaykh/pir. Shah Ismail’s bid on sovereignty, therefore, can be interpreted as a clear instance of the strategy of equating royal and sacred authority which became popular in the post-Mongol age: his sacred power, understood as the distillation of ‘Ali’s authority into his person as the Safavid Sufi master, elevates him to the position of royal authority, the sovereign king.

Ahmet T. Karamustafa is professor of history at the University of Maryland, College Park. His expertise is in the social and intellectual history of Sufism in particular and Islamic piety in general in the medieval and early modern periods. His publications include "God’s Unruly Friends" (University of Utah Press, 1994) and "Sufism: The Formative Period" (Edinburgh University Press & University of California Press, 2007). He is currently working on a book project titled "Vernacular Islam: Everyday Muslim Religious Life in Medieval Anatolia" (co-authored with Cemal Kafadar) as well as a monograph on the history of early medieval Sufism titled "The Flowering of Sufism."

Students, nominated by their instructors, have been invited to read their own poems and short stories to a peer audience. For many student writers, Café Shapiro is a first opportunity to read publicly from their creative work. For others, it provides a fresh audience, and the ability to experience the work of students they may not encounter in writing classes.

Through its over 20 years of existence, Café Shapiro has evolved to become several nights of sharing among some of our best undergraduate writers, their friends, families, and the wider community. This year there are a total of 46 students participating over five days. We'll have light refreshments available. Please stop by!

Rumi has been the best-selling poet in North America for twenty years, but most readers do not seem to be aware of his background and the mystical tradition which he belonged to. This talk will shed light on these subjects to facilitate a more nuanced understanding of his message.

Jawid Mojaddedi is professor of religion at Rutgers University. His area of research is early and medieval Sufism. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and raised from the age of five in Great Britain, he completed his studies under the supervision of the late Norman Calder at the University of Manchester, receiving his PhD in 1998. He served for two years as assistant editor for Encyclopaedia Iranica, before taking up his current position at Rutgers, where he teaches courses in the general field of Islamic studies.

This event is simultaneously broadcast from the University of Minnesota and shared virtually with the University of Michigan and Rutgers University. Ann Arbor and New Brunswick audiences will be able to participate live with both the speaker and the two distance audiences.

Alice James Books is a prominent independent poetry press that was founded in 1973 by five women and two men: Patricia Cumming, Marjorie Fletcher, Jean Pedrick, Lee Rudolph, Ron Schreiber, Betsy Sholl and Cornelia Veenendaal. Their objectives were to give women access to publishing and to involve authors in the publishing process.

AJB remains committed to its founders’ original mission while expanding upon the scope to include poets of all genders, backgrounds, and stages of their careers. In keeping with our efforts to foster equity and inclusivity in publishing and the literary arts, AJB seeks out poets whose writing possesses the range, depth, and ability to cultivate empathy in our world and to dynamically push against silence. The press sees the work it publishes as instrumental in cultivating conversations that help us overcome the barriers we face as a nation.

Alice James also stands out for its collaborative partnerships with authors, as well as the level of attention given to the aesthetics of each book we publish. AJB believes in supporting writers throughout their careers, connecting them to their readers, and allowing them to tell their stories.

U-M Germanic Languages & Literatures Winter Colloquium

Friday March 16, 2018

2:00-4:00 PM

Room 3308 Modern Languages Building

Peter McIsaac's essay (available on request in advance) analyses Gottfried Benn’s 1912 Morgue und andere Gedichte (Morgue and other poems) in terms of exhibition. Beyond situating the poems alongside public displays of bodies in morgues and specimens and models used in medical schools and popular anatomy exhibitions of Benn’s day, the essay also uses concepts from Mieke Bal’s Double Exposures to illuminate how the poems themselves operate in exhibitory terms. With this approach, the Morgue poems become comprehensible as configurations of material objects that can be visited in the mind’s eye and that stand in critical relationship to popular exhibits and urban culture around 1900.

Peter McIsaac is Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. His most recent publication, "Medical Collections and Medical Education at the University of Michigan,” appeared in the 2017 volume Object Lessons and the Formation of Knowledge. The University of Michigan Museums, Libraries and Collections, 1817–2017, eds. Kerstin Barndt and Carla Sinopoli. His article "'Es schmeckt nach Kino': Provocative Display and Gestures of Exposure in and around Gottfried Benn’s Morgue und andere Gedichte" is forthcoming in German Studies Review.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC)

The Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center's Survivor Empowerment & Ally Support (SEAS) Volunteer Program is now accepting submissions for the 13th annual rEVOLUTION: Making Art for Change art show!

We welcome all UM affiliated artists to submit their artworks to be displayed in our art show in rEVOLUTION: Making Art for Change. Art of any medium is welcome, including, but not limited to: painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, spoken word, and poetry. The themes of our show are gender, sexism, sexual violence, empowerment, and healing. The topic of sexual violence can include sexual assault, intimate partner violence, sexual and gender-based harassment, and stalking.

Healing is a process that works in different ways for different people. Creating and displaying art can prove very helpful as a way to promote healing. Artistic expression provides a medium to bring up and process emotions and experiences in a way that can be difficult to discuss otherwise.

Our goal with this event is to create and engage in a supportive community space for survivors where UM student allies and survivors will build empathy and an understanding of sexual violence and healing through the unique creative expression of survivor experiences and perspectives.

Please e-mail submissions to artrevolution@umich.edu and fill out this form (https://goo.gl/forms/CeVUxF7iRs9fQbPy1) by Monday March 19th! If your work is accepted, it will be displayed at the opening night of the art show the evening of April 6th. Opening night will be held from 6-9 PM in the East and West Conference Rooms on the fourth floor of Rackham Graduate School.

A reading at Literati Bookstore.

About The Fall of Athens:

The Fall of Athens reflects the bleak state of present-day Athens and reminds the reader that there is nothing new about Greece's suffering. Combining present observations with portraits of the Greek musicians and writers, Holst-Warhaft's book is both a peon of praise for the music and poetry that the author first discovered in the Greece of the 1960's, and a reminder of how much the country has changed since it returned to democracy in 1974. Having played in the orchestras of such legends as Mikis Theodorakis and Dionysis Savvopoulos, the author had a bird's eye view of 20th century Greek music at its apogee. Translating Greek poetry and prose later brought her in close contact with some of the leading writers of the period. With the discovery of Greek music and poetry came the forging of lasting friendships with these giants of Greek culture. This eclectic compilation of poetry, prose, translation, memoir, and songs captures the enigmatic, hybrid nature of Greece, a country that has always had the ability to create extraordinary beauty out of suffering.

Gail Holst-Warhaft was born in Australia. Besides being a poet she has been a journalist, broadcaster, prose-writer, academic, musician, and translator. In the 1970's, while researching a book on Greek music, Holst-Warhaft performed as a keyboard-player with Greece's leading composers, including Mikis Theodorakis. Among her many publications are Road to Rembetika (1975, 5th edition 2013), Theodorakis: Myth and Politics in Modern Greek Music (Hakkert, Amsterdam, 1980), Dangerous Voices: Women's Laments and Greek Literature (Routledge, 1992), The Cue for Passion: Grief and its Political Uses (Harvard, 2000), I Had Three Lives: Selected Poems of Mikis Theodorakis (Livanis, 2005), and Penelope's Confession (poems, Cosmos, 2007), Losing Paradise: The Water Crisis in the Mediterranean (Ashgate, 2010). She has published translations of Aeschylus, and of a number of modern Greek poets and prose-writers. Her poems and translations of Greek poetry have appeared in journals in the US (Literary Imagination, Bookpress, Seneca Review, Antipodes, Per Contra, Literary Matters), the U.K. (Agenda, Stand), Australia (Southerly), and Greece (Poetry Greece). She was appointed Poet Laureate of Tompkins County for 2011 and 2012.

Ruth Padel is a British poet, novelist and non-fiction author, known for her nature writing and connections with music, science, Greece and conservation. Padel has won the UK National Poetry Competition and published six collections of poetry, celebrated for glittering imagery, and for "passion, wit, music, texture and elegance.” Her collection Voodoo Shop (2002) was shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot and Whitbread Prizes. "Visual, sensuous and highly seductive, as if Wallace Stevens had hijacked Sylvia Plath with a dash of punk Sappho thrown in," said the Times Literary Supplement. She is a great great grand-daughter of Charles Darwin and a Fellow of The Zoological Society of London. She currently lives in London, where she teaches poetry at King’s College.
