Black History Month's Closing Speaker - JANAYA KHAN (March 1, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82365 82365-21070618@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 1, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Multi Ethnic Student Affairs - MESA

MESA is proud to present Black History Month's Closing Speaker - JANAYA KHAN. Join us for a thrilling event where Janaya Khan will discuss “The Future within the Black Lives Matter Movement and The Intersections of being a Black, Queer, and Gender-Nonconforming Activist" This event is sponsored by The Spectrum Center and Central Student Government, and will be co-moderated by students Adrian King (they/them), PhD candidate in American Culture, and Jolyna Chiangong, who will be joined by Vice President Of Student Life Dr. Martino Harmon.

With a timely message about the transformational power of protest, Janaya Khan is a leading activist who engages their community in a profound discussion about social justice and equality. Known as ‘Future’ within the Black Lives Matter movement, Janaya is a black, queer, gender-nonconforming activist (pronouns: they, them, theirs), staunch Afrofuturist and social-justice educator who presents an enlightening point of view on police brutality and systemic racism.

“Throughout the political tumult of 2020, one of the most prominent voices to become a source of healing and hope was Janaya Future Khan, whose rapidly-growing audience across social media now numbers in the hundreds of thousands. But while the activist’s weekly Sunday Sermons on Instagram provided a necessary forum for those looking to reflect and regroup during the pandemic and the instances of police brutality that sparked a renewal of energy behind the Black Lives Matter movement, Khan’s activism extends much further back—all the way to their childhood, spent between Toronto and Florida, and their subsequent years as a competitive boxer.

Galvanized by the 2014 killings of Michael Brown in Ferguson and Jermaine Carby in Toronto at the hands of police officers, Khan has had a longstanding involvement in Black Lives Matter—even launching its first international chapter in Canada—and became a necessary and informed voice for those seeking direction last summer. And like many around the world, Khan found themselves dismayed and angered by the scenes that unfolded on Wednesday at the U.S. Capitol building, where riots led by Trump supporters sieged the building to disrupt the final counting of the Electoral College ballots in favor of Joe Biden’s Presidential win, resulting in five deaths.” BY LIAM HESS January 10, 2021

MESA and the Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event, fill out our Event Accessibility Form, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. Any questions about accessibility at Spectrum Center events can be directed to spectrumcenter@umich.edu.

The Residential College 2020-2021 Robertson Memorial Lecture

Award-Winning Writer, Theodore Roethke Distinguished University Professor and RC Alumna, Laura Kasischke

"The News from Poetry: In an Era of False Facts and True Fallacies, What's to be Found in Art?”

March 3, 2021 via Zoom
4 - 5:30pm, with an online reception to follow
Register at https://myumi.ch/yKA8b

This talk will explore the ways in which art crosses borders and boundaries, both personal and global, erases political divisions to unite generations and cultures, to speak to all genders and races, to erase religious and economic divisions, while traveling eternally and generously (and for free!) from continent to continent, century to century, enduring through crises and chaos, disease and despair, to bring us the truths without which we will die.

Laura Kasischke is a graduate of the Residential College and is now proud to be an instructor of creative writing in it as well as in the English Department, where she is the Theodore Roethke Distinguished University Professor. She has published eleven collections of poetry, nine novels, a novella, and a collection of short stories. Her work has been translated into over a dozen languages, and three of her novels have been made into feature length films. The recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rilke Award for Poetry, and numerous teaching awards, Kasischke’s twelfth collection of poetry, Lightning Falls in Love, will be published in September.

Presented by the Residential College, celebrating 50 years of the Creative Writing & Literature Program

The Robertson Memorial Lecture is an annual Residential College event made possible by a gift honoring Professor James H. Robertson and Jean B. Robertson, the first Dean of the Residential College and his wife.

This event is free and open to the public.

Homer’s Odyssey (April 5, 2021 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79946 79946-20517553@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 5, 2021 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Using Robert Fagles’ translation of the Odyssey (required), we will do a close reading and discussion of the poem. We will get to know Odysseus, “that man of many ways” (as war hero; as master of disguise; as teller of tales; as skilled craftsman; and, finally, as husband and father).

Instructor Marilyn Scott was a lecturer in Classics and Great Books at UM and taught Latin and English at Ann Arbor’s Community High School.

The study group will meet Mondays from April 5 through May 17. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Medieval English Poetry (May 7, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/79947 79947-21251095@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, May 7, 2021 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

This course will explore a sampling of medieval poems about a variety of topics. We will read mostly short lyric poems, but one class will be dedicated to a longer chivalric romance. Our class sessions will be based in discussion about the poems, many of which are anonymously written. We will read the poems in modern English, with the original Middle English on hand.

Readings will be pre-circulated each session. No previous experience with Middle English or poetry is required.

Instructor Margo Kolenda- Mason is a PhD Candidate in English at UM, where she studies medieval and renaissance literature.

The study group will meet Fridays from May 7 through June 11. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

*I am America too.* With these powerful words, Afro-American poet Langston Hughes expressed the right of coloured people to be an equal part of American culture and society. As a member of the »Harlem Renaissance«, a dynamic movement initiated by Afro-American artists in the 1920s, Hughes became a true classic. With his deeply humanistic attitude, his intellect, sense of humour and incorruptible integrity, he produced works that remain timeless and touching to this day. The concert programme *Langston Hughes: Singing Harlem in Europe* features musical settings of his texts by composers like Wilhelm Grosz, Florence Price and Leonard Bernstein, showing that humanity and truthfulness know no bounds – neither then, nor now.

»I know why the caged bird sings« – it sings of freedom in order not to lose hope. It sings in order to feel the life beyond the bars of its cage. To encourage itself and others. And this is how American composers and authors with African roots sing and write to this day: their subject matter is discrimination and injustice, pride and dignity – but love and separation as well, mourning and joy, belief and hope.

In the second part of the Celebration of Black Music, several generations of these artists have their say: from Florence Price and William Grant Still to Tyshawn Sorey and B. E. Boykin. The concert presents a many-voiced panorama of black music in its countless and fascinating facets.

We invite community members of all ages and languages to participate in the annual Translate-a-Thon at the University of Michigan on October 1-2, 2021.

A Translate-a-Thon is a short, intense, community-driven translation marathon, where volunteers interested in translation come together to translate materials for the benefit of our local, national, and international community.

Coordinated by the Language Resource Center and co-sponsored by the Department of Comparative Literature, our Translate-a-thon also promotes a sense of community among translators. We welcome current students and alums, faculty and staff, teachers and students from local high schools, prospective transfer students, professional translators and other interested parties.

This year we are celebrating ten years of the Translate-a-Thon, with a special theme on translation and migration. We kick off the weekend at 3pm on October 1 with a Virtual Conversation with Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, author of The Undocumented Americans. We will highlight translation projects for Freedom House Detroit, to support their mission of outreach to asylum seekers.

A range of other community translation projects will also be available to work on over the weekend, remotely or in person. Check out our Translation Gallery with more information for volunteers to translate work on projects in many languages!

We also welcome colleagues from other colleges and universities who would like to observe our activities in order to learn about organizing similar events at their own institutions. To follow up, we will host a workshop on “How to Run a Translate-a-Thon” (for further details contact complit.info@umich.edu).

This talk will be in Spanish.

Organized By: Comparative Literature

Join Comparative Literature as we welcome Nancy Roberts, free-lance Arabic-to-English translator and editor on November 11th, 2021 @ 4:30pm in room 4310 of the Modern Languages Building.

Translators of literary works perform numerous functions simultaneously in relation to both a written work and its author. These functions include the linguistic, the cultural, the socio-political and the personal. Varied though they are, these functions might be summed up in the words “partner” and “mouthpiece.” After a brief detour into how her life trajectory led her to the field of Arabic-English translation, Nancy Roberts will relate her attempts to serve as “partner” and “mouthpiece” in the process of translating works originating in Palestine (Ibrahim Nasrallah’s Time of White Horses [زمن الخيول البيضاء], Lanterns of the King of Galilee [قناديل ملك الجليل] and Gaza Weddings [أعراس آمنة], and Ahlam Bsharat’s Codename: Butterfly [اسمي الحركي فراشة]) and Libya (Najwa Bin Shatwan’s, The Slave Yards [زرايب العبيد], and Ibrahim al-Koni’s The Night Will Have Its Say [كلمة الليل في حق النهار]).

Nancy Roberts is a free-lance Arabic-to-English translator and editor with experience in the areas of modern Arabic literature, politics and education; international development; Arab women’s economic and political empowerment; Islamic jurisprudence and theology; Islamist thought and movements; and interreligious dialogue. Literary translations include works by Ghada Samman, Ahlem Mostaghanemi, Naguib Mahjouz, Ibrahim Nasrallah, Ibrahim al-Koni, Salman al-Farsi, Laila Al Johani, and Haji Jabir, among others. Her translation of Ghada Samman’s Beirut ’75 won the 1994 Arkansas Arabic Translation Award; her rendition of Salwa Bakr's The Man From Bashmour (Cairo: AUC Press, 2007) was awarded a commendation in the 2008 Saif Ghobash-Banipal Prize for Translation, while her English translations of Ibrahim Nasrallah’s Gaza Weddings (Cairo: Hoopoe Press, 2017), Lanterns of the King of Galilee (AUC Press, 2015) and Time of White Horses (Cairo: Hoopoe Reprint, 2016) won her the 2018 Sheikh Hamad Prize for Translation and International Understanding. She is based in Wheaton, Illinois.

This event will be held IN PERSON.

The theme for this year's Black History Month is: BLACK JOY! For the students of the Black History Month planning committee, Black Joy means "focusing on the successes and accomplishments of Black people of all backgrounds. Despite the hardships we’ve faced and still are facing we continue to rise. We are leaders, scientists, doctors, innovators, entertainers, and so much more. Black Joy is capturing the wins of our people and celebrating them despite us living in a world where it is not expected of us to do amazing things. Black Joy is beating the odds continuously in a world that was in theory not made for us. We celebrate Black Joy because nobody has us like we have each other therefore we must rise and show the world what we can do. Black Joy shows that as Black people, despite the trauma our people have experienced, we are proud to be who we are. No matter where we come from or what we identify as we are one and we are happy to be Black."

Details on Call to Art:
We want to give students the opportunity to participate in this celebration of Black Joy in the form of artistic expression. Send in your stuff!! We are ACCEPTING ALL: vocal, instrumental, and dance performances, visual/studio art, digital art, photography, any form of poetry; you basically have free rein!! show us what you got! We will collaborate with the student artists as much or as little as they want in order to make the engagement with the art meaningful and relevant to the artists’ work.

-Submission DEADLINE is February 14th at 11:59pm!
-Gallery Exhibit and Performance date is Friday, February 18th, time TBA.
