We invite community members of all ages and languages to participate in the annual Translate-a-Thon at the University of Michigan on October 1-2, 2021.

A Translate-a-Thon is a short, intense, community-driven translation marathon, where volunteers interested in translation come together to translate materials for the benefit of our local, national, and international community.

Coordinated by the Language Resource Center and co-sponsored by the Department of Comparative Literature, our Translate-a-thon also promotes a sense of community among translators. We welcome current students and alums, faculty and staff, teachers and students from local high schools, prospective transfer students, professional translators and other interested parties.

This year we are celebrating ten years of the Translate-a-Thon, with a special theme on translation and migration. We kick off the weekend at 3pm on October 1 with a Virtual Conversation with Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, author of The Undocumented Americans. We will highlight translation projects for Freedom House Detroit, to support their mission of outreach to asylum seekers.

A range of other community translation projects will also be available to work on over the weekend, remotely or in person. Check out our Translation Gallery with more information for volunteers to translate work on projects in many languages!

We also welcome colleagues from other colleges and universities who would like to observe our activities in order to learn about organizing similar events at their own institutions. To follow up, we will host a workshop on “How to Run a Translate-a-Thon” (for further details contact complit.info@umich.edu).

Paula Cucurella, "Contando ausencias, buscando cuerpos" (November 3, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88758 88758-21657348@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 3, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies

This talk will be in Spanish.

Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Comparative Literature

Join Comparative Literature as we welcome Nancy Roberts, free-lance Arabic-to-English translator and editor on November 11th, 2021 @ 4:30pm in room 4310 of the Modern Languages Building.

Translators of literary works perform numerous functions simultaneously in relation to both a written work and its author. These functions include the linguistic, the cultural, the socio-political and the personal. Varied though they are, these functions might be summed up in the words “partner” and “mouthpiece.” After a brief detour into how her life trajectory led her to the field of Arabic-English translation, Nancy Roberts will relate her attempts to serve as “partner” and “mouthpiece” in the process of translating works originating in Palestine (Ibrahim Nasrallah’s Time of White Horses [زمن الخيول البيضاء], Lanterns of the King of Galilee [قناديل ملك الجليل] and Gaza Weddings [أعراس آمنة], and Ahlam Bsharat’s Codename: Butterfly [اسمي الحركي فراشة]) and Libya (Najwa Bin Shatwan’s, The Slave Yards [زرايب العبيد], and Ibrahim al-Koni’s The Night Will Have Its Say [كلمة الليل في حق النهار]).

Nancy Roberts is a free-lance Arabic-to-English translator and editor with experience in the areas of modern Arabic literature, politics and education; international development; Arab women’s economic and political empowerment; Islamic jurisprudence and theology; Islamist thought and movements; and interreligious dialogue. Literary translations include works by Ghada Samman, Ahlem Mostaghanemi, Naguib Mahjouz, Ibrahim Nasrallah, Ibrahim al-Koni, Salman al-Farsi, Laila Al Johani, and Haji Jabir, among others. Her translation of Ghada Samman’s Beirut ’75 won the 1994 Arkansas Arabic Translation Award; her rendition of Salwa Bakr's The Man From Bashmour (Cairo: AUC Press, 2007) was awarded a commendation in the 2008 Saif Ghobash-Banipal Prize for Translation, while her English translations of Ibrahim Nasrallah’s Gaza Weddings (Cairo: Hoopoe Press, 2017), Lanterns of the King of Galilee (AUC Press, 2015) and Time of White Horses (Cairo: Hoopoe Reprint, 2016) won her the 2018 Sheikh Hamad Prize for Translation and International Understanding. She is based in Wheaton, Illinois.

This event will be held IN PERSON.

The theme for this year's Black History Month is: BLACK JOY! For the students of the Black History Month planning committee, Black Joy means "focusing on the successes and accomplishments of Black people of all backgrounds. Despite the hardships we’ve faced and still are facing we continue to rise. We are leaders, scientists, doctors, innovators, entertainers, and so much more. Black Joy is capturing the wins of our people and celebrating them despite us living in a world where it is not expected of us to do amazing things. Black Joy is beating the odds continuously in a world that was in theory not made for us. We celebrate Black Joy because nobody has us like we have each other therefore we must rise and show the world what we can do. Black Joy shows that as Black people, despite the trauma our people have experienced, we are proud to be who we are. No matter where we come from or what we identify as we are one and we are happy to be Black."

Details on Call to Art:
We want to give students the opportunity to participate in this celebration of Black Joy in the form of artistic expression. Send in your stuff!! We are ACCEPTING ALL: vocal, instrumental, and dance performances, visual/studio art, digital art, photography, any form of poetry; you basically have free rein!! show us what you got! We will collaborate with the student artists as much or as little as they want in order to make the engagement with the art meaningful and relevant to the artists’ work.

-Submission DEADLINE is February 14th at 11:59pm!
-Gallery Exhibit and Performance date is Friday, February 18th, time TBA.

Winter 2022 MEMS Lecture. Arcadia Brasiliensis: Landscape and Colonial Dislocation in the Poetry of Cláudio Manuel da Costa (March 18, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/92049 92049-21686409@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 18, 2022 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS)

The publication of the Orbas of the Brazilian Cláudio Manuel da Costa in 1769 is recognized as the beginning of a period in Brazilian colonial literature termed ‘Arcadianism.’ The literature of this period displays the initial formulations of Brazilian national identity, anticipating its independence in 1822 and negotiated by means of a neoclassical armature.

My lecture will consider formulations of space and landscape in the work of Cláudio Manuel da Costa, whose poetry, centered around the Greco-Roman bucolic Arcadia, reconciles the experience of inhabiting a landscape altered by colonialist intervention with the idyllic projection of the European literature which serves as his literary antecedent. Such a formulation encapsulates the tension between real and imagined spaces that characterizes European geographical thinking after the so-called ‘discovery’ of the Americas, which fundamentally altered the European world view.

The literature that emerged from the era of Iberian discovery and exploration would shape its colonial spaces in its own imagination through reliance on literary formulations of space coined in the literatures of Greco-Roman antiquity. This Eurocentric narrative is disrupted by literatures produced by the inhabitants of this New World, shaping the world that was their center in contradistinction to its image in European literatures.

Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: William L. Clements Library

Poet, essayist, and novelist Honorée Fanonne Jeffers will discuss the research and practice that led to her award-winning book of poetry The Age of Phillis (2020). This collection is based upon fifteen years of research on the life and times of Phillis Wheatley Peters (1753-1784), a formerly enslaved person who was the first African American woman to publish a book. Professor Jeffers will discuss the connections between archival research and creative practice, and on the ways that early Americanist scholarship can benefit from engagement with contemporary poetry. The Age of Phillis won the 2021 NAACP Image Award for Literary Work: Poetry, was long-listed for the 2020 National Book Award in Poetry, and was a finalist for both the 2021 PEN/Volcker Award and the 2021 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Poetry. The Age of Phillis was also chosen as the “common read” for the Society of Early Americanists’ conference for the academic year of 2020-2021.

A Randolph G. Adams Lecture presented by the William L. Clements Library in partnership with the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, Residential College, Department of English Language and Literature, and Department of History.

Award-winning artist and publisher Carta Monir (small press link) presents a workshop on making work that scares you. From work about family to sex, to one's own body, there are many subjects that can feel off-limits for artists. Carta will walk you through exercises designed to start you thinking about your own approach to 'loaded' work, and work with the entire group to figure out if there is such a thing as 'going too far' where personal narratives are concerned. While not pornographic, this is an 18+ event and some sensitive topics will be addressed.

April is National Poetry Month, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year we're joining the tens of millions of readers, students, teachers, librarians, booksellers, publishers, families, and, of course, poets, in marking poetry's important place in our lives. Our goal is for everyone in our community to read a poem, write a poem, or listen to a poem in April. Why? As editor and teacher Alice Osborn said, "Poetry is like the Windex on a grubby car window—it bares open the vulnerabilities of human beings so we can all relate to each other a little better."

How to Get Involved

April is National Poetry Month, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year we're joining the tens of millions of readers, students, teachers, librarians, booksellers, publishers, families, and, of course, poets, in marking poetry's important place in our lives. Our goal is for everyone in our community to read a poem, write a poem, or listen to a poem in April. Why? As editor and teacher Alice Osborn said, "Poetry is like the Windex on a grubby car window—it bares open the vulnerabilities of human beings so we can all relate to each other a little better."

How to Get Involved

Timothy Yu is the Martha Meier Renk-Bascom Professor of Poetry at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He has written about Asian identity in modern and contemporary English-language poetry, especially of the avant-garde. His most recent book, Diasporic Poetics: Asian Writing in the United States, Canada, and Australia (2021) shows how English-language poets in Asian diasporas use “strategies of adaptation” that break free from our models of race, diaspora, and poetics. He has also published a book of poems, 1000 Chinese Silences (Les Figues Press, 2016), which unsettles the orientalism of white modernist U.S. poetry.

Edgar Garcia is an Associate Professor of English and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Creative Writing at the University of Chicago. His work focuses on literary production in the twentieth and twenty first century Americas. Focusing on indigenous, Chicanx, and latinx studies, Garcia studies how race and national identity is configured through aesthetics and semiotics. His 2020 monograph, Signs of the Americas: A Poetics of Pictography, Hieroglyphs, and Khipu (University of Chicago Press, 2020) explores the ongoing vitality of such sign systems considered “dead.” An article portion of this book (“Pictography, Law, and Earth: Gerald Vizenor, John Borrows, and Louise Erdrich” in PMLA) was honored for the William Riley Parker Prize from the Modern Language Association. His upcoming book project, “Migrant Lots,” explores the relationship of divination and migration as modes of risk analysis.

Noon Poems
Take a few minutes to listen to a poem. Every weekday at noon in April, our Youtube channel will feature a U-M faculty member reading one of their poems. Videos will also be archived for those who wish to listen later. If you'd like to receive a daily reminder in your inbox, sign up here: http://eepurl.com/hrZTGv.

Long time Ann Arbor writer and American Culture's Lecturer Frances Kai-Hwa Wang reads from her new book, You Cannot Resist Me When My Hair Is in Braids.
With many stories set on the streets and in the cafes of Ann Arbor, this is a mischievous and fierce collection of lyric essays and prose poems deftly navigating the space between cultures, punctuated by wise children, bossy aunties, unreliable suitors, and an uncertain political landscape that is Asian America. With artwork and stories behind the stories, we will discuss the challenges of writing in these political and pandemic times.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

This is an initial collaboration between the Archaeological Legacy Institute and OLLI Out of Town. Modern Native Storytelling through Performance Poetry explores the fascinating world of a dynamic team of indigenous youth writers from the Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) in New Mexico. Led by teacher and poet Timothy P. McLaughlin, the SFIS Spoken Word Program empowers its student members to create and perform original poems centered in Native philosophies.

Over an eight-year history, the exquisite artistry of this ever-evolving team has been highly recognized through numerous awards, a bevy of media appearances including in The New York Times and on The PBS News Hour, and performance tours throughout the United States and to the Baltic nations in Eastern Europe. This documentary film journeys with the SFIS Spoken Word Team as the core group (including several graduating twelfth graders) prepares and presents a theater production of their finest poems woven with traditional and contemporary song and dance. The young SFIS poets will enchant your heart and enliven your spirit as they continue the ancient tradition of Native storytelling through the powerful new medium of performance poetry.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.
