Zakopane is an extraordinary town. Located amidst the stunning beauty of the Tatra Mountains, it is Poland’s best-known holiday resort. Tourism has been growing there since the 1870s, when wealthy outsiders began building holiday homes to enjoy the town’s picturesque location.

With the outbreak of the First World War, many Zakopane residents rushed off to fight, but many others sought refuge in Zakopane to wait out the global conflict. The writer Stefan Żeromski became the informal leader of those who remained. As the war came to an end, the Austro-Hungarian and German Empires collapsed, joining the Russian Empire that had fallen a year earlier, creating a confusing vacuum of authority. On October 31, 1918, a group of politicians, intellectuals, and local activists in Zakopane took the initiative to disarm the local Austrian military police, and on November 1st they proclaimed the formation of a “National Council,” under Żeromski’s leadership. Thus was born the “Republic of Zakopane.”

Although Poles celebrate November 11, 1918, as the anniversary of independence, in fact there were many such proclamations in various towns and cities during those tumultuous weeks, each capturing a different vision of what this new country might become. The “Republic of Zakopane” may seem like an idiosyncratic curiosity, but it exemplifies the rich diversity of attitudes, dreams, and hopes that blossomed in 1918.

Maciej Krupa is a journalist and mountain guide who lives and works in Zakopane, Poland. An anthropologist and historian by training, he is the co-founder of the local weekly newspaper, "Tygodnik Podhalanski," and a former BBC World Service producer. Krupa has authored and co-authored several books and numerous publications on topics related to Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains. His most recent works in English include: "The Tatras," "Zakopane," "Podhale" (2018); "The Outstanding Residents of the Zakopane Trail" (2017); and "Zakopane, Past and Present" (2004).

This lecture marks the opening “100 Years of Polish Independence: Zakopane 1918,” an exhibition of photographs from the archives of the Tatra Museum in Zakopane, Poland. The Copernicus Program in Polish Studies has curated the exhibit and organized public lectures in collaboration with the Tatra Museum, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw, and Culture.pl as part of POLSKA 100, an international cultural program commemorating the centenary of Poland regaining Independence. The Zakopane of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period referred to as “The Young Poland,” is of particular importance in Polish culture. It was the freest place in Poland at the time, partitioned by three neighboring empires – a place where artists, scientists, social, and political activists met. They went there to rest and rejuvenate; they roamed the Tatra Mountains, discussed, created, and conspired. Visitors at this time included the statesmen Józef Piłsudski and Roman Dmowski; writers Henryk Sienkiewicz and Stefan Żeromski; doctor Kazimierz Dłuski; and aristocrat Władysław Zamoyski. Anyone who meant anything in the spiritual life of the Poles frequented Zakopane, adding to the aura of this extraordinary place. Among the visitors were also people who became well-known in America: Helena Modjeska, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Artur Rubinstein, Bronisław Malinowski, and Joseph Conrad. Thanks to all of them, this small highlander village became known as the "Polish Athens” at a time when Zakopane achieved its spiritual peak.

Maciej Krupa, a journalist and mountain guide who lives and works in Zakopane, will discuss the importance of this time and place in Polish culture and history. Krupa has authored numerous publications related to Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains and is the co-founder of the local weekly newspaper "Tygodnik Podhalanski."

From Cannes and Telluride nominee Ewa Banaszkiewicz and Mateusz Dymek comes a fiction film that takes the form of a first-time filmmaker’s documentary. MY FRIEND THE POLISH GIRL (87 min., 2018) borrows from cinema verite and video bloggers to create a rare naturalism in style and performance. The fiction film watches as an experimental documentary told through the eyes (and lens) of amateur filmmaker Katie: an American rich kid following Alicja, an erratic unemployed Polish actress. Set in a post-Brexit-vote London, Katie’s colonising, disruptive presence in Alicja’s life mirrors the treatment of migrants in the UK: welcomed, used, then discarded. A raw, sexual, and visually brash film exploring the abusive power and control over someone’s intimacy. Directed by Ewa Banaszkiewicz.

Founded in 1963, the Ann Arbor Film Festival is internationally recognized as a premier forum showcasing the most creative and unique films of today’s preeminent moving image artists who cross boundaries, defy expectations, and experiment with concepts and techniques. The six-day festival presents 40 programs with more than 200 films from over 20 countries of all lengths and genres.

Marcin Wodzinski has produced the first cartographic reference book on Hasidism, one of the modern era's most vibrant and important mystical movements. In this lecture, he will discuss Hasidism's emergence and expansion in Eastern Europe; its spread to the New World; and its remarkable postwar rebirth. Wodzinski’s innovative mapping allows him to show to what extent Hasidism dominated the Eastern European Jewry, which Hasidic dynasties were strongest and why, and how the Hasidim resurrected in the Post-Holocaust era.

Marcin Wodziński (b. 1966) was born and raised in Silesia, Poland. He currently works at the Department of Jewish Studies, University of Wrocław, Poland, where he is professor of Jewish history and literature. His research focuses on the history and culture of East European Jews in modern times, especially the Haskalah and Hasidism. Of his recent publications, he is most proud of "Historical Atlas of Hasidism" (2018) and "Hasidism: Key Questions" (2018).

2019-20 Postdoctoral Fellow Alena Aniskiewicz gives a 30-minute talk followed by Q & A.

In 2012, the Polish rapper Doniu told *The New York Times*, “If Mickiewicz was alive today; he’d be a good rhymer.” Identifying Adam Mickiewicz—a nineteenth-century Romantic poet—as a precursor to the “rhymers” of contemporary hip-hop, Doniu’s assertion speaks to Polish hip-hop communities’ efforts to locate the international genre within national cultural traditions. This talk will examine the Romantic legacies of “freestyling” and politically engaged lyrics as they are referenced and performed in the work of Polish hip-hop artist Peja and his group Slums Attack. Capitalizing on the resonance between national and genre ideals of authenticity and speaking to and for marginalized communities, Peja positions himself as heir to the Romantic poets whose work has shaped ideas of Polishness for two hundred years. In so doing, he performs a vision a Poland that remains defined by its national past, even as it embraces a modern global music.

Agnieszka Holland and Kasia Adamik, directors. In Polish with English subtitles (128 min., 2017).

Duszejko, an eccentric retired construction engineer, an astrologist and a vegetarian, lives in a small mountain village on the Czech-Polish border. One day her beloved dogs disappear. A few months later she discovers a dead body of her neighbour, a poacher. The only traces leading to the mysterious death are those of roe deer hooves around the house…

As time goes by, more grisly killings are discovered. The victims, all hunters, belonged to the local elite. The police investigation proves ineffective. Duszejko has her own theory: all murders were committed by wild animals…

POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews opened its core exhibition less than five years ago, but it has already attracted millions of visitors and massive and favorable media attention both in Poland and internationally, and earned the major European museum awards. However, since it opposed the so-called Holocaust complicity law in early 2018 and organized a large public program for the 50th anniversary of the 1968 “anti-Zionist campaign” in communist Poland, it has become an object of media attacks and criticism by the government. This lecture will present the processes that had led to the establishment of the museum and its remarkable success. It will examine how these processes have changed under a culture war dividing the country; a tendency for expansive government control; and a memory policy, which rejects critical coming to terms with difficult pasts as a “pedagogy of shame” and calls for a glorious vision of national history, focusing on heroism and victimhood.

Dariusz Stola is a historian and professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences. He has published ten books and more than 100 articles on the history of Polish-Jewish relations, the Holocaust, international migrations and communist regime, as well as on Polish debates about these pasts. In 2014-2019, he was the Polin Museum director.

Annual Copernicus Lecture. Working Around, Against, and Without: An Artist’s Excursion on Shifting Political Ground (November 11, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65641 65641-16627844@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 11, 2019 5:30pm
Location: Museum of Art

After the fall of communism, Eastern Europeans enjoyed a deep sense of freedom and engagement, convinced that profound social and political change was underway. In 1990s Poland, boundary-pushing artists like Artur Żmijewski played an active role in shaping the new reality. As time progressed, however, the promise of transformative change was revealed to be illusory, and the communists' dominant style of politics persisted. Art became a target for political attacks because of its critical stance toward the Catholic Church and “wild” capitalism.

How should artists react in this increasingly authoritarian situation? Resist? Adapt? Or perhaps create a sort of hybrid position? In this lecture, Żmijewski will discuss the relationship between his art and political engagement in the context of the past thirty years.

Artur Żmijewski was born in Warsaw in 1966. He graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts under the supervision of Professor Grzegorz Kowalski. A multimedia artist, he uses primarily photography and film to explore the line between fiction and documentary. Żmijewski is also an accomplished curator and art critic. He is one of the founding members of the art journal "Czereja," serves as the artistic editor of "Krytyka Polityczna," and directed the 7th Berlin Biennale. In 1995, Żmijewski was a fellow at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam; he received the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Per L'Arte Prize for his work "An Eye for an Eye." In 2005, his “Repetition” was shown in the Polish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and two years later his film *Them* was screened at Documenta in Kassel. Żmijewski also participated in the 14th edition of Documenta, presenting his films *Glimpse* and *Realism*.
