Marlous van Waijenburg is a comparative economic historian working on the long-term development of African economies, with a specific focus on the nature and legacies of colonialism.

PEW provides a unique forum for doctoral students and faculty members to share and develop interdisciplinary research in political economy. Political science and economics are intimately linked in both substance and methodology, and the field of political economy is among the most fertile and enduring areas for cross-disciplinary research in the social sciences. Currently, PEW is the sole interdisciplinary workshop at the University of Michigan wholly dedicated to the exploration of current research in political economy, and thus plays a valuable role in fostering connections among the university’s various departments and schools.

Abstract: Do refugees reshape long-term political behavior in receiving areas? To investigate this question, I examine the expulsion of ethnic Germans from Eastern Europe into West Germany at the end of WWII. Expellees were strangers to the cultural practices in their new surroundings. Tensions with natives forced expellees to rely on each other and helped foster a strong group identity. I argue that this shared identity, coupled with political circumstances specific to Germany, engendered support for the radical right among expellees. Using district-level data from 32 elections spanning 100 years, I find that communities which received greater shares of expellees remain more supportive of the radical right in the short, medium, and long term. This legacy of forced migration responds to changes in the political context within Germany, and is driven primarily by districts that received greater shares of expellees who were not citizens of the Reich during the interwar period.

Hyeon-Young Ro's research focuses on domestic firms' preferences and regulations on inbound foreign direct investment (FDI). Her dissertation project examines how industrial features such as economies of scale internal and external to a firm shape attitude towards restrictions on inbound FDI by domestic producers. She also analyzes FDI regulations by disaggregating the types of FDI into two different entry modes: greenfield investment and cross-border mergers and acquisitions. More generally, she studies how domestic special interest groups influence trade and FDI policy making.

Tom O'Mealia studies the relationship between violence, security provision, and the evolution of the post-colonial state. In particular, He asks why civilians in contexts of acute insecurity choose to invest their trust in some security providers and not others, and how those decisions impact state building and political development. His research also explains how and why political elites use the state security apparatus to consolidate control at the local level.

O'Mealia answers these questions using field work and by analyzing original data collected in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, and South Africa.
