The MIW program offers an opportunity each year for 45-50 undergraduates from any major to spend a semester (Fall or Winter) in Washington D.C. Students combine coursework with an internship that reflects their particular area of interest (such as American politics, international studies, history, the arts, public health, economics, the media, the environment, science and technology). The semester in Washington is action packed. Students work four days a week, attend an elective one evening a week and a research course on Friday mornings. They spend their weekends exploring the city and taking in cultural events. Most leave Washington longing to return.

Students are free to pursue internships of their own choosing. They are coached in internship searching strategies as part of a prep class that is taken the semester before going to D.C. Students have interned at the White House, the Smithsonian, CNN, Greenpeace, CBS, Public Defender’s Service, Washington Institute for Near East Policy, NAACP, The Brookings Institution, American Enterprise Institute, National Defense University, Partnership for Public Service, Center for American Progress, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and many others.
FUNDING is available for this living and learning program.

Location: Jeffries Hall
Organized By: Michigan Law Environmental and Energy Law Program

The Trump administration has drastically changed how federal environmental policy is shaped and implemented. Beyond this obvious headline, there are much bigger trends that will influence the environment and economy in the years ahead. Mr. Parker will discuss where the real action and opportunity will be in this space in the coming years.

This lecture is free and open to the public.

Doug Parker is a recognized leader in environmental risk and compliance who advises clients on environmental policy, public sector strategies, enforcement actions and crisis management.

At E&W Strategies, he serves clients by providing strategic direction in the areas of corporate and individual risk, crisis mitigation and environmental compliance. He brings a unique perspective to his role as the former Director of EPA's Criminal Investigation Division where he oversaw matters ranging from the investigation into the Deepwater Horizon disaster to the Volkswagen emissions cheating scandal.

Mr. Parker counsels clients on navigating environmental, health and safety compliance challenges across multiple industries, including the automotive, energy, chemical, utility and manufacturing sectors. He also provides guidance to law firms, consulting firms, and financial entities that are managing compliance matters or are engaged in due diligence with environmental risk implications. Additionally, Mr. Parker serves as a subject matter expert for those seeking to understand and navigate the environmental and natural resource policy space or who may be advocating at the federal level on critical policy and enforcement issues.

Mr. Parker speaks regularly to industry groups on strategies for navigating environmental risk and has shared his insights on CNN, National Public Radio, as well as in The New York Times and numerous other media outlets.

Please join us for the latest installment of the ELPP Lecture Series, featuring Sean Donahue of the law firm Donahue, Goldberg & Weaver, LLP.

This event is free and open to the public.

Sean Donahue, of Donahue, Goldberg & Weaver, LLP, a small DC-based firm whose practice focuses on representing environmental organizations in Clean Air Act and federal climate litigation, as well as cases involving state climate and clean energy initiatives. Donahue will discuss some of the major Trump Administration deregulatory actions in which he and his colleagues are involved: proposed repeal of Clean Power Plan and revision of carbon dioxide standards for new power plants; rollbacks of greenhouse gas emissions standards and fuel economy standards for motor vehicles and withdrawal of California’s authority to adopt and enforce separate greenhouse gas standards, and EPA’s proposed finding that Clean Air Act that regulation of mercury and other hazardous air pollutants from power plants is not appropriate or necessary. Donahue will address recurring legal issues and practical challenges involved in litigating such cases, some cross-cutting features of the Trump Administration’s deregulatory efforts in the environmental area, and what to look for as the Administration’s major initiatives move from agency rulemaking to the courts. While dealing with complex administrative law questions and daunting health and environmental hazards, the talk may be punctuated by moments of uplifting humor and cautious optimism.

Registration is open!

Please join us on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 from 3:00-4:00 PM to hear from Douglas J. Wiebe, PhD, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded Penn Injury Science Center, and Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at Perelman School of Medicine.

In this seminar, Dr. Wiebe will focus on how he and his colleagues used GIS-assisted activity path interviews and mapped data of the urban landscape to investigate how situations young people encounter and the places they go over their daily activities relate to the likelihood of violence.

Study subjects were 10-24 year-olds in Philadelphia: 143 assault patients who had been shot with a firearm and 206 assault patients injured with other types of weapons from hospital emergency departments, and 283 controls from the community. This detailed set of data on activity paths and the context of each situation and environment that each subject encountered provided novel opportunities to learn about young peoples’ activities and triggers of violence in the urban landscape.

Please note, attendees may join the seminar in person or via the live webcast. To join via the webcast, please register for the event using the link below and select the ticket type labeled, “live-webcast.” You will receive log-in information prior to the event.

Light refreshments will be served. The event will take place in the Community Lounge (Room 1680) in the U-M School of Public Health, SPH-I.

Two days after the 2016 elections, 27-year-old Katie Fahey, a political novice, posted on Facebook, “I’d like to take on gerrymandering in Michigan. If you’re interested in doing this as well please let me know. {smiley face emoji}.” What began as a Facebook group, turned into an army of volunteers in a matter of weeks. The massive nonpartisan citizen campaign, now named Voters Not Politicians, gathered over 400,000 signatures to put redistricting reform on the Michigan ballot. The ballot initiative sought to create an independent commission to determine voting districts in Michigan. Michigan voters overwhelmingly approved the ballot measure in November 2018. The success of Fahey’s campaign has made it a model for anti-gerrymandering campaigns—and citizen organizing—across the nation. As Tina Rosenberg wrote in the New York Times, “If you doubt that a private citizen can make a difference, meet Fahey.”

Each new genetic test or medical app generates or collects more and more detailed health data, but may also raise serious issues for medicine, public health. Under what circumstances should a test be used, and how should it be implemented? Should people be allowed to choose or refuse a test, or should it be mandatory, as newborn screening is in some states? How should the data from these tests be used, and should individuals control access to the results of their tests? If test results are released to third parties, such as employers or insurers, what protections should be in place to protect individuals from unfair treatment based on test results, data collected, or genotype?

This Dissonance series event will take a multi-disciplinary look at these issues from a variety of theoretical and applied perspectives.

Panelists will include:
- Lori Andrews, Professor of Law and Director of the Institute for Science, Law and, Technology at Chicago Kent Law School

- Jodyn Platt, Assistant Professor, U-M Medical School

- Kayte Spector-Bagdady, Assistant Professor, U-M Medical School, Chief of the Research Ethics Service in the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM)

Young Americans for Freedom at the University of Michigan is proud to host Ben Shapiro on March 12th in collaboration with the Young America's Foundation (YAF). Through this event, students and the general public will be able to hear from and participate in a Q/A with one of the nation's top conservative minds. More info on the event can be found at yaf.org, Twitter (@yafumich), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/YAFUMich/), and Instagram (@yafumich).

Ben Shapiro is editor-in-chief of The Daily Wire and host of "The Ben Shapiro Show," the top conservative podcast in the nation and now nationally-syndicated radio show. Shapiro is the author of seven nonfiction books; his newest work "The Right Side of History: How Reason and Moral Purpose Made the West Great" will be released on March 19th. He earned a BA in Political Science from UCLA in 2004 and graduated from Harvard Law School in 2007.
Shapiro has appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows around the nation, including "Fox and Friends" (Fox News), "In the Money" (CNN Financial), "The Dennis Prager Show," among others.

Young America's Foundation and the YAF at the University of Michigan chapter seek to educate students on conservative values that are otherwise absent on most college campuses. Shapiro has frequently addressed the issue of the Left's ideological stranglehold on academia and has worked to push back against that trend through fact and logic-based speeches and debates. "Facts don't care about your feelings" has become one of Ben Shapiro's trademark lines. He has appeared as the featured speaker at many conservative events on campuses nationwide, several of those appearances targeted by progressive and "Antifa" activists. Shapiro, an Orthodox Jew, has also worked to expose the anti-Israel and anti-Semitic motivations behind the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

Please join us for the latest installment of the ELPP Lecture Series, presented by Professor David Hunter from the American University Washington College of Law. Professor Hunter will discuss the global campaign to hold international financial Institutions like the World Bank accountable for the environmental damage and human rights violations caused by their projects. This will include the implications of Jam v. International Finance Corporation (IFC), a case pending before the US Supreme Court that challenges the World Bank’s claim of immunity. The case was brought by local fishermen in coastal India harmed by a coal-fired power plant. The case reflects one of several strategies for applying minimum environmental and human rights standards to the activities of international organizations.

This event is free and open to the public.

David Hunter is Professor of international and comparative environmental law at American University's Washington College of Law. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Accountability Counsel, the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide-US, and the Project on Government Oversight. He is a Member Scholar of the Center for Progressive Reform and a member of the Organization of American States’ Expert Group on Environmental Law, the InterAmerican Network for Environmental Law’s Advisory Board, and the Strategic Advisors Group for the International Finance Corporation’s Compliance Advisor/Ombudsman. Healthier Together: Collaborative Networks of Patients, Clinicians and Researchers Working Together to Transform Care (March 19, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/59181 59181-14694667@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2019 12:00pm

Organized By: Department of Learning Health Sciences

Today’s health system fails to deliver the best possible outcomes. Research takes too long and costs too much, and opportunities to engage the participation and contribution by patients and families are not yet common. What if we could create a better care system by harnessing inherent motivation and collective intelligence of patients, clinicians and researchers? In every part of our lives, networks are having a profound effect. How could networked organizations accelerate progress towards Learning Health Systems? This talk will describe how several large-scale learning health system networks are eliminating the artificial barriers between clinical care, improvement and research while engaging all stakeholders as part of a single health system. The result is faster learning and better outcomes for large populations of patients.

The LHS Collaboratory is co-sponsored by the Department of Learning Health Sciences, the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation and the Office of Research at the University of Michigan.

The U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps and the University of Michigan Law School Present "The United States vs. Jackie Robinson"

In August 1944, Second Lieutenant Jack R. Robinson faced a court-martial at Camp Hood, Texas, related to two charges of insubordination of a superior officer following an incident on a bus in which he refused to obey Jim Crow-era laws.

Recently, Army historians have discovered the identity of an unheralded defense attorney who was instrumental in Jackie Robinson's acquittal. This attorney, Captain Robert H. Johnson, was a graduate of the University of Michigan and Michigan Law. The presentation will detail the African-American experience in WWII, analyze the court-martial, and discuss its effects on this American icon.

Please join us for the latest installment of the Environmental Law & Policy Program Lecture Series, featuring Professor Richard Revesz from NYU Law.

This event is free and open to the public.

Richard Revesz is one of the nation’s leading voices in the fields of environmental and regulatory law and policy. His work focuses on the use of cost-benefit analysis in administrative regulation, federalism and environmental regulation, design of liability regimes for environmental protection, and positive political economy analysis of environmental regulation. His book Retaking Rationality: How Cost-Benefit Analysis Can Better Protect the Environment and Our Health (with Michael Livermore ’06, 2008) contends that the economic analysis of law can be used to support a more protective approach to environmental and health policy. In 2008, Revesz co-founded the Institute for Policy Integrity at NYU School of Law to advocate for regulatory reform before courts, legislatures, and agencies, and to contribute original scholarly research in the environmental and health-and-safety areas. Revesz received a BS summa cum laude from Princeton University, an MS in civil engineering from MIT, and a JD from Yale Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Yale Law Journal. After judicial clerkships with Chief Judge Wilfred Feinberg of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Justice Thurgood Marshall of the US Supreme Court, Revesz joined the NYU School of Law faculty in 1985 and served as dean from 2002 to 2013. Revesz is the director of the American Law Institute, the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a senior fellow of the Administrative Conference of the United States.

We will discuss the Green New Deal by learning about the policy itself while examining various perspectives on its content. We'll also consider the economic impact of the proposed policy, and discuss changes to the environment in the state of Michigan, and how the Green New Deal would potentially impact Michiganders.

Our aim is to bring liberals, conservatives, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic
- Practice discussing difficult topics with others,
- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives,
- Learn to productively challenge an idea, and
- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.

Location: University Hospitals
Organized By: Eisenberg Family Depression Center

The community is invited to join the Michigan Medicine Department of Psychiatry for the 24th Annual Waggoner Lecture on Ethics & Values in Medicine. The title of this year’s talk is “Medical Ethics on the Border: A Look at Immigration Detention.” The talk will be presented by Pamela K. McPherson, M.D., FAPAon Wednesday, November 13 from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. in Ford Auditorium at University Hospital.

Pamela K. McPherson, M.D., FAPA is a medical doctor triple-boarded in general, child and adolescent, and forensic psychiatry. She is a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Shreveport Behavioral Health Clinic, a gratis assistant professor at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport, and a mental health subject matter expert for the Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at the Department of Homeland Security. Dr. McPherson focuses her research on the mental health of justice-involved youth as well as conditions of juvenile confinement, and consults for the U.S. government and non-profits on mental health services for justice-involved youth.

In 2018, she and colleague Dr. Scott A. Allen exposed the serious health risks to children who are separated from their parents and detained as part of the U.S. administration’s zero tolerance policy at the southern border. Learn more about their work from this CNN article published in May: These doctors risked their careers to expose the dangers children face in immigrant family detention.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. McPherson to our campus in November for this esteemed lectureship,” said Debra A. Pinals, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry and director of the Program in Psychiatry, Law and Ethics at U-M and chair of the Waggoner Lectureship Committee. “Dr. McPherson has incredible insight into the conditions of immigrants entering the United States. She could not be better suited to address our campus for this lecture devoted to medical ethics and values in medicine.”

The University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry established the Raymond W. Waggoner Lectureship on Ethics and Values in Medicine in 1996. This lectureship was created in honor of the late Dr. Waggoner, emeritus professor and past chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, who throughout his career and to all who knew him, exemplified the highest standards of integrity and ethics.

The lectureship is an annual event to recognize Dr. Waggoner’s enormous contributions to the Michigan Medicine medical center and to the profession, and to promulgate his interest in medical ethics.

Why President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel prejudiced its character and status (November 19, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/69261 69261-17275358@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 19, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Jeffries Hall
Organized By: University of Michigan Law School

President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move the U.S. embassy to the city has been universally condemned, as it is contrary to a well-established rule of international law stipulating that states must not recognize the fruits of conquest. While the United States chose to exercise its right of veto in the UN Security Council to block a resolution criticizing the presidential decision, the remaining members of the council, including close U.S. allies, criticized it. Similarly, the UN General Assembly, the European Union, the Arab League, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation have all passed strongly worded resolutions saying that they would not recognize any changes to the pre-1967 borders, including in and around Jerusalem. This talk examines the legal standing of the U.S. decision in light of previous positions that the United States has historically adopted or endorsed.

Location: Jeffries Hall
Organized By: Michigan Law Environmental and Energy Law Program

Please join us for the latest installment in the ELPP Lecture Series. Professor Alexandra Klass from the University of Minnesota Law School will discuss recent developments in U.S. energy law, policy, economics, and technology. Although President Trump and his cabinet Secretaries, particularly at the Interior Department, Energy Department, and Environmental Protection Agency, have announced dramatic policy shifts away from those pursued during the Obama Administration, the new administration’s ability to accomplish its goals is in some instances helped and in other instances hindered by existing federal and state laws as well as private sector technology and economic trends. Topics will include the shift away from the use of coal and toward natural gas and renewable energy in the electricity sector; the use of federal public lands to develop oil, natural gas, coal, wind, and solar energy; developments in technology and law associated with hydraulic facturing ("fracking"); and controversies over new oil and gas pipelines such as the Dakota Access and Keystone XL Pipelines.

This event is free and open to the public.

Professor Alexandra B. Klass teaches and writes in the areas of energy law, environmental law, natural resources law, tort law, and property law. Her recent scholarly work, published in many of the nation’s leading law journals, addresses regulatory challenges to integrating more renewable energy into the nation’s electric grid, transportation electrification, oil and gas transportation infrastructure, and the use of eminent domain for electric transmission lines and pipelines. She is a co-author of Energy Law: Concepts and Insights Series (Foundation Press 2017), Energy Law and Policy (West Academic Publishing 2d ed. 2018), Natural Resources Law: A Place-Based Book of Problems and Cases (Wolters Kluwer, 4th ed., 2018), and The Practice and Policy of Environmental Law (Foundation Press, 4th ed. 2017). Professor Klass was named the Stanley V. Kinyon Teacher of the Year for 2009-2010, and she served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2010-2012. She was a Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard Law School in 2015. She is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor and in prior years was the Julius E. Davis Professor of Law and the Solly Robins Distinguished Research Fellow.

Prior to her teaching career, Professor Klass was a partner at Dorsey & Whitney LLP in Minneapolis, where she specialized in environmental law, natural resources, and land use matters. During her years in private practice from 1993-2004, she handled cases in federal and state trial and appellate courts involving contaminated property, wetlands, environmental review, mining, environmental rights, zoning, eminent domain, and environmental torts. She clerked for the Honorable Barbara B. Crabb, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin from 1992-1993.
