TBP Grad Student Speaker Series: Training (for) Better Presentations (June 16, 2018 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/49925 49925-11577492@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, June 16, 2018 9:00am
Location: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building
Organized By: Tau Beta Pi

**Note change of location**
We are excited to announce the launch of TBP Graduate Student Speaker Series: Training (for) Better Presentations organized by Tau Beta Pi for the College of Engineering, a pilot professional development event funded by the College of Engineering and the Office of Student Affairs.

Training (for) Better Presentations is aimed at providing Michigan Engineering graduate students the opportunity to enhance their scientific communication skills, so they can learn to effectively convey the "big picture" value of their research to a diverse audience. It also aims to engage a dialog of science and engineering research among graduate students across the entire College of Engineering.

Intended as "teaching through practice" event, each session is structured to have student speakers (2-3 per session) make a timed (15-20 min) presentation on their graduate research to a broad engineering audience and a communications expert panel (3-4 panelists). Our expert panelists will provide constructive feedback to the speakers (and the audience), highlighting the positive aspects of each presentation and also indicating opportunities for improvement. This structure will allow for the speakers to receive specific feedback on their communication skills, while also providing the audience with generalized guidelines for good scientific communication.

Starting mid-February and leading up to June, we will be organizing multiple sessions for this event, and we invite you to participate. The sessions will be held on Saturday mornings (9am - 11am), and will be scheduled to occur once every 2-3 weeks. Breakfast and coffee will be provided!

If you are interested in participating as a speaker, please indicate your availability on the "Speaker sign up" form and the planning committee will follow up with you for scheduling. If you are interested in participating as an audience member, please sign up through our TBP website on the "Audience sign up" link. Note: you be prompted to create a guest profile in order to sign-up as an audience member.

We look forward to your participation!

We all have triggers that set us off. Maybe it’s too much traffic or that certain someone who gets under your skin. To be human means sometimes getting caught by life’s irritations and disappointments.

But when that occasional reaction becomes a routine inner state of irritability, anger, anxiety, stress or sadness, you’re in trouble.

You either manage your triggers or your triggers manage you. Unfortunately, just understanding this doesn’t tell you how to change it. This workshop will delve into the reasons we get triggered and how to change our thinking and responses so that we can take back our power.

Through presentation, discussion, and exercises, we will work together to help you find strategies and solutions to help make the shift from your triggered self to your bigger self for a more effective and enjoyable life.

"Understanding Stage Fright" (September 26, 2018 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53398 53398-13358066@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 26, 2018 3:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

This program will explore stage fright (aka performance anxiety). We will discuss why you may doubt yourself, despite doing all you could do to prepare.
You will learn about the complexities of stage fright and some practical strategies to optimize your outcome and enjoyment when speaking or performing. Anyone performing or speaking in front of groups (or wishing they could) will want to attend.
Julie Jaffee Nagel has many years of experience dealing with her own stage fright as a pianist, then later treating performance anxious individuals as a psychologist, and writing about the topic. Julie earned a Ph.D. in Psychology and Social Work from the U.of M., a graduate of Juilliard and the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.
Her book publications include “Managing Stage Fright; A Guide for Musicians and Music Teachers” (2017), and “Melodies of the Mind” (2013). She is in private practice in Ann Arbor.
This Study Group for those 50 and over will meet Wednesday September 26 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.

This session of WeListen is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome and lunch will be provided!

RSVP here: http://myumi.ch/6QKOZ

Join us at this WeListen Staff Session to learn about the debate surrounding marijuana legalization and to participate in small group discussions about this complex topic. Our aim is to bring liberals, conservatives, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic
- Practice discussing difficult topics with others,
- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives,
- Learn to productively challenge an idea, and
- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.

Questions? Email us at welistenstaff@umich.edu.

This event is co-sponsored by the UM Office of DEI and the LSA DEI Implementation Leads. We are excited to announce the EGS & TBP Student Speaker Series organized by Tau Beta Pi and Engineering Graduate Symposium for the College of Engineering, a professional development event for EGS presenters to practice their presentation skills.

Intended as "teaching through practice" event, each session is structured to have EGS student speakers make a timed presentation on their graduate research to a broad engineering audience and a communications expert panel. Expert panelists will provide constructive feedback to the speakers (and the audience), highlighting the positive aspects of each presentation and also indicating opportunities for improvement. This structure will allow for the speakers to receive specific feedback on their communication skills, while also providing the audience with generalized guidelines for good scientific communication.

We will host two events, both 6-8 pm, at 1303 EECS (10/15) and 1005 DOW (10/18) respectively. Food will be provided!

If you are interested in participating as an audience, please sign up through our TBP website here:

Note: you will be prompted to create a guest profile in order to sign-up for the event.

**Fall 2019 KICK-OFF WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 23RD**

Sandwiches and Science: Training (for) Better Presentations marks the third run of the professional development event hosted by Tau Beta Pi aimed at providing Michigan Engineering graduate students the opportunity to enhance their scientific communication skills. The series will be co-hosted/sponsored by TBP and the graduate societies of MSE, ECE, ChE, and MACRO and also sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs! As "learning-by-practice" event, it aims to help students learn how to effectively convey the "big picture" value of their research to a diverse audience, while also engaging a dialog of science and engineering research among graduate students across the entire College of Engineering. The event is aimed primarily at graduate students planning to take their candidacy exam, but anyone is welcome to participate! We will host 7-10 events each term, and event dates/times will be announced on a rolling basis.

Each session is structured to have student speakers (2-3 per session) make a timed (15-20 min) presentation on their graduate research to a broad engineering audience and a communications expert panel (3-4 panelists).

If you would like to participate as a speaker/audience, please fill out the links below. We will follow-up with you with scheduling details. NOTE: The event is open to ALL CoE students, regardless of TBP membership status.

The Council of Global Student Organizations is a new international council at the University of Michigan which is focused on connecting all student organizations that travel internationally in order to network, learn best practices, and access resources.

CGSO was created because we recognized that many SSO's lack formal training and support from the University of Michigan so we wanted to create a space where all participating organizations can learn the skills to ensure that their initiatives abroad are collaborative and as impactful as possible.

Our first council meeting will be on Wednesday, February 6th at 6pm in room B1580 in Blau Hall. Please register to attend using this link: tinyurl.com/joincgso.

At our first meeting you will learn how your org can be apart of a collaborative council on how to responsibly engage with international communities. Enhance your cultural humility and awareness so your project can have a positive impact. Network with others who share your passion for international community engagement and leadership, and learn how these skills can directly translate to your career.

For more information please check out our website (tinyurl.com/cgsoumich), Facebook page (tinyurl.com/cgsoumichfb) or send us an email (contact-cgso@umich.com).

Do you have experience in working alongside community partners in data analysis or program evaluation? Do you want to connect with others who are using their skills for public good? National efforts from organizations such as DataKind, Data Science for Social Good, and Statistics without Borders have been expanding in recent years as more individuals recognize their potential to impact social change. Great things can happen when individuals are empowered to dedicate time, resources, and knowledge to the pursuit of public good. Whether we work in the foreground or the background, we can all contribute to improving the lives of those around us.

Statistics in the Community (STATCOM), in collaboration with the Center for Education Design, Evaluation, and Research (CEDER) and the Community Technical Assistance Collaborative (CTAC), invite you to attend the 2nd Annual Data for Public Good Symposium hosted by the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS). The symposium showcase the many research efforts and community-based partnerships at U-M that focus on improving humanity by using data for public good. At the workshop, participants will learn from faculty experts about best practices for respectful international engagement, have the opportunity to share what they have learned from their previous experiences abroad, and receive resources to help them during their time overseas.

In addition, we will also be addressing how one can navigate their social identities abroad and how to anticipate varying social systems in order to best prepare you for your time abroad.

This workshop will also ensure that you and your organization gain the tools to establish that your initiative is successful in creating mutually-equitable partnerships with the international communities that you are interacting with.

Free dinner will be provided to all participants!

If you would like to participate as a speaker/audience, please fill out the links below. We will follow-up with you with scheduling details. NOTE: The event is open to ALL CoE students, regardless of TBP membership status.

How does the internationalization of higher education affect it? What does it mean to those who hail from abroad? Does academic freedom globalize? How do scholars and students who move across the world attend to its intricacies, obligations, and limitations? These are some of the questions that we will attempt to answer as part of our conversation. Please join us!

The public is welcome!
Lunch will be served.
Please RSVP. This is optional but does help us ensure that we provide enough food for everyone.

#MeToo: A WeListen Staff Discussion

This session of WeListen is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome and lunch will be provided!

RSVP here: http://myumi.ch/LzEYO

The #MeToo movement has highlighted issues of sexual misconduct across the globe since going viral in October 2017. Initially centered around sexual misconduct in the workplace, the movement has since allowed survivors of sexual harassment and assault to speak about their experiences in broader contexts. The hashtag has reached the entertainment industry, higher education, politics, and more as people like Aziz Ansari, Matt Lauer, Kevin Spacey, Bill Cosby, Larry Nassar, and Brett Kavanaugh have their reputations called into question. Some remain unscathed after public scrutiny while others lose their jobs or are sentenced to prison time.

Have we seen true change in sexual misconduct policy since the hashtag began? Does the #MeToo movement violate the American value of "innocent until proven guilty?" Can allegations of sexual misconduct be managed by the court of public opinion or should all consequences be withheld until a trial has taken place?

Join us at this WeListen Staff Discussion to learn about the #MeToo movement and to participate in small group discussions about this complex topic.

The planning committee includes staff members from the Ginsberg Center, the International Institute, LSA Psychology, the Opportunity Hub, UM Poverty Solutions, and the UM Shared Services Center.

If you would like to participate as a speaker/audience, please fill out the links below. We will follow-up with you with scheduling details. NOTE: The event is open to ALL CoE students, regardless of TBP membership status.

Is life just too complicated? Sometimes our modern life is so impersonal that it is almost impossible to get resolution when things go wrong. When you try to get assistance you go through a complex phone menu, end up on hold for a long time, and then don’t even get to speak to a real person. It could be an incorrect charge on your credit card, problems with medical insurance, appliances that break, warranties that don’t protect you, etc. Does this sound familiar? While we all have these issues, Joan

Instructor Joan Cohen Jones has found some very effective strategies for dealing with these issues. Though she can’t promise perfect results every time, she can provide approaches to help you succeed so that you, too, can take on Goliath!

This session for those 50 and above will meet on Wednesday, April 17, from 3-5 pm.
