Metacognition: The Key to Equity and Excellence for All Students!

21st Century students come to college with widely varying academic skills and motivation levels. Most students expend very little energy attempting to learn and rely on memorizing information just before examinations. This interactive workshop will help attendees understand why many students expend very little energy on learning and have difficulty achieving student learning outcomes. Cognitive science research based methods that can be used to facilitate conceptual, transferable learning will be discussed. The session will present specific learning strategies that have resulted in significant increases in student effort and improvement in student learning in undergraduate, graduate, and professional school environments.

About the Keynote Speaker:
Dr. Saundra McGuire is the Director Emerita of the Center for Academic Success and Retired Professor of Chemistry at Louisiana State University. She is an internationally renowned expert in the area of learning support and is the author of Teach Students How to Learn and Teach Yourself How to Learn.

**Fall 2019 KICK-OFF WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 23RD**

Sandwiches and Science: Training (for) Better Presentations marks the third run of the professional development event hosted by Tau Beta Pi aimed at providing Michigan Engineering graduate students the opportunity to enhance their scientific communication skills. The series will be co-hosted/sponsored by TBP and the graduate societies of MSE, ECE, ChE, and MACRO and also sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs! As "learning-by-practice" event, it aims to help students learn how to effectively convey the "big picture" value of their research to a diverse audience, while also engaging a dialog of science and engineering research among graduate students across the entire College of Engineering. The event is aimed primarily at graduate students planning to take their candidacy exam, but anyone is welcome to participate! We will host 7-10 events each term, and event dates/times will be announced on a rolling basis.

Each session is structured to have student speakers (2-3 per session) make a timed (15-20 min) presentation on their graduate research to a broad engineering audience and a communications expert panel (3-4 panelists). Our expert panelists will provide constructive feedback to the speakers (and the audience), highlighting the positive aspects of each presentation and also indicating opportunities for improvement. This structure will allow for the speakers to receive specific feedback on their communication skills, while also providing the audience with generalized guidelines for good scientific communication.

If you would like to participate as a speaker/audience, please fill out the links below. We will follow-up with you with scheduling details. NOTE: The event is open to ALL CoE students, regardless of TBP membership status.

The Polarization of Partisanship: A WeListen Staff Discussion (July 26, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/64331 64331-16316439@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, July 26, 2019 11:00am
Location: School of Social Work Building
Organized By: WeListen Staff

This WeListen session is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome and lunch will be provided!

RSVP here: http://bit.ly/WLJuly19

Polarization has become a buzzword used to describe the current state of U.S. politics, and a perceived lack of dialogue across the political spectrum. People who gravitate toward political extremes tend to dominate news coverage, while the 'exhausted majority' who are more flexible in their views are often forgotten in public discourse.

Are we truly polarized with regard to our political views? Do the media play a role in this divide, whether perceived or real? And how does the two-party system contribute to polarization? Join us for a lively discussion on where we stand and where we're headed.

Our aim is to bring liberals, conservatives, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic
- Practice discussing difficult topics with others,
- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives,
- Learn to productively challenge an idea, and
- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.

Questions? Email us at welistenstaff@umich.edu.

This event is co-sponsored by the UM Office of DEI and the LSA DEI Implementation Leads. The planning committee includes staff members from the Ginsberg Center, the International Institute, LSA Psychology, UM Poverty Solutions, and the UM Shared Services Center.

Stephanie Zimbler, a 2011 graduate with a bachelor of arts in communications and Spanish, is a senior account manager at Google’s Dublin office, where she works with international clients to meet the tech giant’s sales goals.

Before joining Google, Zimbler worked on the marketing and communications side of fashion, most recently as a media and digital communications manager at Cartier’s New York office and a digital marketing analyst at Michael Kors.

Before her foray into fashion, she developed recommendations for search engine optimization (SEO) for clients of marketing firms at iProspect and Convergence Point Media.

Around two years ago, Zimbler became determined to have an international career experience, and hunted for positions abroad until she found the right fit at Google. “I love Dublin,” she said. “The Google office here is super international. It’s a really cool hub to work in.”

Zimbler is excited to discuss her experience finding a position abroad, share tips for breaking into Google, discuss marketing, communications and sales careers, and answer questions about work culture in Europe. This event is intended for undergraduate LSA Students.
