Location: Perry Building
Organized By: Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques

This course reviews a range of survey data collection methods that are both interview-based (face-to-face and telephone) and self-administered (questionnaires that are mailed and online, i.e., web surveys). Mixed mode designs are also covered as well as several hybrid modes for collecting sensitive information e.g., self-administering the sensitive questions in what is otherwise a face-to-face interview. The course also covers newer methods such as mobile web and SMS (text message) interviews, and examines alternative data sources such as social media. It concentrates on the impact these techniques have on the quality of survey data, including error from measurement, nonresponse, and coverage, and assesses the tradeoffs between these error sources when researchers choose a mode or survey design. This is not a how-to-do-it course on survey data collection, but rather focuses on the error properties of key aspects of the data collection process.

Students will view recorded lectures and complete reading assignments in preparation for class discussion sessions which will occur twice per week, one hour per session. Students are expected to attend all discussion sessions either in person or via BlueJeans. Successful discussion sessions will occur through preparation and active participation by all participants enrolled in the course. Students should have questions or discussion topics in mind for the class sessions.

Remote participation option: It is not necessary to be physically in Ann Arbor to take the course. Students who cannot be in Ann Arbor can enroll and join discussion sessions via BlueJeans (https://www.bluejeans.com/).

Once enrollment is confirmed via email, indicate if course attendance will be in person, in Ann Arbor or via BlueJeans.

Prerequisite: An introductory course in survey research methods or equivalent experience. If joining remotely, participant must have computer, camera and headset available to join the class via BlueJeans (https://www.bluejeans.com/)
This class meets June 3-July 24 on Monday and Wednesday from 3:00pm-4:00pm

Mark your calendars for the 2019 Young, Gifted, @Risk, & Resilient (YGARR) national conference at the University of Michigan! This day-long conference will bring together leading researchers, practitioners, administrators, faculty, and students to focus on campus climate and mental health among young adult/college students of color.

The current dialogue on mental health among college students has become a nationwide priority. Students of color in particular are tasked with navigating unique circumstances that can negatively influence their mental health, including racial/ethnic discrimination disparities in service utilization that can be exacerbated by discrimination experiences, treatment related to immigration status, and racialized sexual and gender marginalization. Yet, there is a relative dearth of scholarship specifically focused on the roles and impacts of campus climates characterized by these types of experiences on the mental health and well-being of college students of color. Such gaps in knowledge inhibit our ability to fully provide high quality, responsive, and equitable and inclusive supports and services.

This national conference is a collaboration between The Steve Fund, the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) at the University of Michigan. The conference curriculum is informed by the longstanding work of The Steve Fund and the latest research and insights from scholars and practitioners across the country. Conference participants will explore national and campus socio-political contexts and take away best practices in order to foster spaces and places that promote emotional well-being for students of color. We hope you will join us as we work towards advancing research and informing practice to better support students of color across the country.

We welcome you to visit the conference website to learn more. If you have any questions, please email Laura Sánchez-Parkinson at lasanche@umich.edu.

In the late 1990s cosmologists discovered that the expansion of the universe is speeding up, not slowing down as expected. This discovery, honored with the Physics Nobel Prize in 2011, has generated waves in the field of cosmology and presents us with a grand mystery: what is the origin and nature of dark energy, the stuff that causes the accelerated expansion? Professor Huterer will review the exciting new developments in this field, including hints for new physics lurking in the data, and the upcoming ground and space telescopes dedicated to solve the dark energy mystery.

The last decade marked the development of a new kind of powerful research laser that can deliver a trillion 1-Angstrom x-rays in a femtosecond or even less. This x-ray free-electron laser is revolutionizing the way scientists observe dynamics on the quantum scale in the laboratory. We are beginning to learn how to track the relative motion of atoms inside molecules. Professor Bucksbaum will discuss the current efforts and future opportunities to employ these sources for molecular movies.

As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.

Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis and is especially important during these trying times. Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

Free and open to all levels of practice.
