ABSTRACT

In this talk, I will introduce a new website for learning how to analyze fMRI data (https://andysbrainbook.readthedocs.io). The site is intended for the training of new graduate students and RA's in different aspects of imaging analysis, while also making it convenient to cross-reference related topics such as scripting and Unix. Animations and videos are provided in order to visualize abstract concepts, and exercises help the reader consolidate what they have just learned. I will discuss how the website is organized, how readers can make edits, and which topics will be added in the future - for example, tutorials for SPM and AFNI, and more advanced techniques such as diffusion and MVPA.

The talk will be recorded and uploaded to Andy’s YouTube channel http://tinyurl.com/y2zbzseu

Why Ignorance Fails to Recognize Itself (September 13, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65368 65368-16573565@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 13, 2019 1:30pm

I discuss the flawed evaluator problem, which asks how well can people assess their own intellectual and social skills, as well as those of others, when their expertise inevitably contains gaps and defects? I discuss how these imperfections lead people to misjudge themselves, often causing them to miss their own incompetence and gullability (the so-called Dunning-Kruger effect), and misjudge others, often prompting failures to recognize top-level competence and virtuosity among their peers (the Cassandra Quandary). I discuss the implications of the flawed evaluator problem for personal issues as well as society at large.

Workplace Discrimination at the Intersection of Race and Gender (September 20, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65291 65291-16565510@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 20, 2019 1:30pm

Issues related to discrimination, belonging, and harassment in the workplace are intersectional (Cole 2009; Crenshaw 1989). That is, people are harassed, excluded, and discriminated against for a variety of social identities (e.g., class, sexuality, gender, age, race, size) which intersect and interrelate. In social and organizational psychology, efforts to understand and end workplace discrimination thus far have tended to focus on single dimensions of marginalization or privilege (e.g., gender), giving us an incomplete picture of how discrimination is enacted and experienced. In this talk, I will discuss research from the PWR (Power, Women, and Relationships) Lab that has used intersectionality theory and the stereotype content model to understand how discrimination manifests for employees based on their combined racial and gender identities. First, I will discuss published quantitative research with students Jessica Saunders and Ryan Jacobson on how STEM professors evaluate post-doc candidates based on the candidates’ race and gender, together. Next, I will discuss published and unpublished qualitative research with student Anna Kallschmidt on identity management and belonging among White men employees from working class and impoverished backgrounds. Finally, I will discuss work student Sarah Robinson and I are pursuing on how the use of certain dialectical styles (White American, urban African American, and Southern American) effects ratings of men employees in individual-structured telephone interviews. Implications of intersectional approaches for fair and just hiring practices and for diversity trainings and interventions will be discussed.

UM Psychology Community Talk: Understanding Memory: How it Works and How to Improve it (September 23, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64329 64329-16316438@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 23, 2019 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Exploring the Mind

Abstract: Human beings store away huge quantities of information in memory. We remember countless facts about the world (e.g., birds have wings, 2+2=4, there are 26 letters in the alphabet) as well specific information about our own lives (e.g., what we had for lunch, where we went for our last vacation, our first kiss). How does that work? How do we store information away into memory and then retrieve exactly the information we need minutes, days, or even years later? Conversely, why do we so often forget someone’s name or where we put our keys? And perhaps most importantly, is there anything we can do to improve our memory and keep it sharp? In this talk, we’ll dive into the psychological and neural mechanisms that underlie our amazing ability to remember. And we’ll also discuss ways to maximize our memory by applying techniques that have been scientifically demonstrated to improve retention.

Bio: Professor Thad A. Polk is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. His research combines functional imaging of the human brain with computational modeling and behavioral methods to investigate the neural architecture underlying cognition. Some of his major projects have investigated changes in neural representations as we age, contributions of nature versus nurture to neural organization and differences in the brains of smokers who quit compared with those who do not. Dr. Polk has taught well over 6,000 UM students over the past 20 years and has developed three neuroscience courses aimed at the general public for The Great Courses (The Addictive Brain, The Aging Brain, The Learning Brain). In 2012 Princeton Review included him on its list of the Best 300 Professors in the U.S.

Improving Data Quality for Web Surveys in Real Time through Predictive Modeling Using Paradata

Paradata are a rich source of data that are collected through little additional effort by researchers. However, paradata are often underutilized. This study suggests a novel approach to use paradata to alter the survey itself in real time in order to improve data quality.

Through a predictive model, paradata about the responses will be utilized to alter the presentation of the survey questions themselves. First, if respondents straight-line through a grid section of the survey, following grids could be changed to single item questions in order to discourage straight-lining. Second, if respondents display multiple indicators of poor data quality, key questions could be moved forward in the survey to present earlier. This second option reduces survey length, lowers cognitive burden for respondents that are taking short cuts, and prevents drop-offs. Both of these techniques could help to improve data quality.

Though programming a survey to adapt in real time may involve a large effort in the beginning, once employed it could be used across projects for little additional cost. Improving data quality should be a goal of everyone in the survey research community. As web surveys continue to increase in frequency of implementation, the focus on data quality of this mode should be a priority.

There are many recent, nuanced, and challenging questions about psychological research methods and practices. How do we “fix” statistics? How do we handle mistakes in published research? Should journals have specialized statistical reviews? In this discussion-oriented session, Dr. Beltz will introduce these tough questions and facilitate conversation about how they relate to our day-to-day research practices, the extent to which they impact the validity and reliability of the work produced in our laboratories, and what they mean for the future of our science.

Switching away from web surveys: what can we learn from JavaScript "OnBlur" functions about response behavior?

The increase in web surveys allows researchers to collect a variety of paradata alongside traditional survey responses. Some paradata, such as response times, enjoy a long tradition in survey research, but others, such as window/tab switching, are only rarely used in survey research. In this talk, I focus on the usefulness and usability of JavaScript "OnBlur" functions informing about how often and for how long respondents switch away from web surveys. For this purpose, I present the results of two empirical studies: the first study explores the impact of on-device multitasking, such as switching away to check social media notifications, on response behavior. The second study, in contrast, focuses on the consequences of looking up answers online for measuring political knowledge. The talk ends with a discussion of further fields of application for JavaScript "OnBlur" functions in survey research.

Lisa Smith, Health Coach, founder of Black Health Academy

After graduating from Michigan with a bachelors in psychology Lisa went on to work as a social worker for The State of Michigan for over four years, however after getting her MBA and discovering a passion for health and wellness she set her sights on entrepreneurship. Once Lisa aggressively conquered her physical health and regained her confidence she set herself on a purpose driven course which led her to launch Professionally Fit in July of 2015 and The Black Health Academy in October of 2017. Lisa also serves as the new Executive Director of the Plant Based Nutrition Support Group, a 6500 member nonprofit organization. Serial entrepreneur, health and wellness subject matter expert, plant based nutritionist, author, and professional speaker are all but a few titles to describe Lisa A. Smith. She now finds she is constantly applying her degree in psychology to her work in coaching, speaking and teaching life long behavior change in the health and wellness field. She has helped many to bridge the gap between their health and career, fight chronic disease and become Professionally Fit!

Stephanie (Colbert) Gaumer, Clinical Therapist at Counseling Centers of Michigan

Stephanie’s career path started at Michigan’s Psychology Department where she took a variety of classes surrounding the brain and child development. These interests led her to volunteering at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital where she learned that many employees had backgrounds in social work. She went on to pursue a Master in Social Work at Loyola University Chicago with a focus in health and a specialty in working with older adults. After graduate school, she worked at a neurofeedback provider for 3 years where she expanded her knowledge on the connection between the brain and mental health. In her desire to broaden her social work career, she moved to the more clinical approach at her current position as a Clinical Therapist at Counseling Centers of Michigan in Clarkston, MI. She has received training in a variety of therapeutic techniques and she works with clients of all ages surrounding mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, anger management and emotional regulation, as well as peak performance in sport and life. This position has been very rewarding to her as she develops relationships with clients and walks alongside them as they achieve their goals. While in Ann Arbor, she also competed for the Women’s Gymnastics team. Her experience within the athletic department showed her that athletes are a unique population that also experience a lot of the same mental health concerns as the general population with the added pressures of balancing sport and athletics. The sport and social work connection has become another passion of hers as she looks to help stress the importance of social workers being present within high schools, colleges and professional sports. She does this with the members of the Alliance of Social Workers in Sport where social workers around the country and Canada come together to discuss the latest advances in the field and how they can all work to expand the possibilities of social workers in a variety of settings.

From incivility and undermining, to harassment and aggression, researchers have documented the many ways in which people mistreat one another while on the job. Research shows that interpersonal workplace mistreatment is associated with harm to individual targets, bystanders, and organizations. However, less scholarship is focused on understanding the antecedents to workplace mistreatment and ways to intervene - why it happens and what to do about it. This talk will review research my colleagues and I have done to help understand ways to counter workplace mistreatment and build respectful workplaces, as well as research opportunities in this area of organizational studies.

Registration is open for the University Psychological Clinic’s fall CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) group for adults with social or performance anxiety. People with social anxiety often worry about seeming incompetent, unintelligent, or awkward in social situations. Symptoms like heart pounding, shaking, sweating, dry mouth, or “blanking out” are common symptoms. People with social anxiety may continue to worry about how they came across to others long after the event is over. This group can help you build skills to counter the effects.

If you think social anxiety is negatively affecting your relationships, your work, or your overall mental health, this group might be the next step for you. Epistemic Exclusion of Faculty of Color: Academic Gatekeeping through Scholarly Devaluation (October 18, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65289 65289-16565508@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 18, 2019 1:30pm

Underrepresented minority faculty (URM; i.e., Black, Hispanic, and American Indian) remain underrepresented within academia, with each of these groups holding fewer than 4% of full-time faculty positions according to 2013 data (U.S. Department of Education, 2013). Further, their representation declines as rank increases. Epistemic exclusion may act as a barrier to the number, retention, and advancement of URM faculty in the academy. Epistemic exclusion (Dotson, 2012, 2014) is the devaluation of URM scholars and the research they do (often on marginalized groups) as illegitimate, lacking value, and outside of disciplinary norms. These disciplinary norms are established and maintained by those who hold power and prestige due to their success working within the dominant discourse. These individuals are often resistant to changing norms either because of narrow views of the field, self-interest, or personal biases towards URMs. In this talk, I use data from 118 faculty interviews, 3 faculty focus groups, and a large faculty survey to illustrate formal and informal ways in which epistemic exclusion operates, and the consequences it has for the psychological well-being, job outcomes, and career trajectories of faculty of color.

Personality traits emerge early in life and appear to reflect liability for various forms of psychopathology. At the same time, the nature and specificity of these associations remains unclear. I will present data establishing rapprochement between contemporary models of personality and psychopathology, integrating empirically based, hierarchically organized structural representations of both at phenotypic and etiologic levels. This work emphasizes the utility of broad higher-order factors (or spectra) of psychopathology (i.e., internalizing, externalizing), but not necessarily the p-factor or individual diagnostic entities, as valuable foci for targeting transdiagnostic mechanisms undergirding psychopathology.

On Listening to Holocaust Survivors (October 23, 2019 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/64582 64582-16388951@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 23, 2019 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

This seminar for those 50 and over is based on the instructor’s forty years of interviewing, teaching about, and writing about Holocaust survivors. In contrast with conventional “testimony” models--2 or 3 hours in front of a video camera--the instructor spoke with the same survivors over months, years, and - with a few people - even decades. The course also emphasizes listening attentively and in depth. That approach often yields surprising insights not otherwise attainable.

Core topics include: (1) The psychological impacts of sustained hate; in this case, antisemitism; (2) What does “trauma” mean and how is it related to other agonies survivors suffer (loss, abandonment, humiliation, stigma, etc.)? (3) How does the experience of survivors challenge conventional psychological assumptions about both injury and resilience? (4) How do listener expectations and capacities - actual and perceived - impact whether, when, and how survivors retell their memories? (5) What does it mean to be able to “listen” to someone who has gone through such experiences - and what is and isn’t the potential impact on listeners? (6) In what ways can it be informing to juxtapose Holocaust survivors’ experiences, in the aftermath, with the experiences of others who’ve gone through hells - especially other genocide survivors, survivors of rape and assault, and survivors of life-threatening illness (especially cancer)? (7) What will actually change when there are no living Holocaust survivors (not as obvious as it may seem)?

Sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 10am-12pm from October 23 through December 11 (no class on November 27). Instructor Hank Greenspan is a psychologist, oral historian, and playwright who has been interviewing, writing about, and teaching about Holocaust survivors since the 1970s, now almost fifty years.

Dimensional models of psychopathology, that transcend diagnostic boundary, have gained traction within the clinical science literature as a means of overcoming the drawbacks of traditional psychiatric diagnostic systems. In this talk, I illustrate the ways in which my research program—aimed at understanding core dimensional factors of psychopathology—can transform clinical science research and practice. I additionally discuss how transdiagnostic dimensional models of psychopathology can inform understanding of health disparities among populations defined by marginalization and stigma.

Masculinity Contest Culture (October 25, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65151 65151-16541459@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 25, 2019 1:30pm

Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

Cultural norms prescribe “real men” to prove their masculinity by dominating others, fostering a Masculinity Contest (MC), a perceived zero-sum competition to prove masculinity. The newly developed and validated Masculinity Contest Culture (MCC) scale assesses four norms: (1) Show No Weakness (e.g., showing “soft” emotions, seeking advice, or admitting doubt are seen as weak), (2) Physical Strength (e.g., preferring “jocks” even in white collar jobs, valorizing work stamina), (3) Put Work First (e.g., working extreme hours, not letting family “interfere” with work), and (4) Dog Eat Dog (a hypercompetitive environment where coworkers cannot be trusted). Factor analyses show the four norms as distinct, though correlated subfactors that represent facets of an overarching latent construct (MCC). Items on the MCC scale do not specifically reference masculinity or male gender, with the notion that MC norms are legitimized simply as “the way we do business,” their origins in masculinity obscured. As a result, both female and male employees may be judged by how well they fit MCC prescriptions, creating obstacles to women’s leadership. The more strongly respondents (both male and female) viewed their work environment as fitting MCC norms, the more dysfunction they reported, from the organization to individual level. Specifically, MCC scores correlated with (a) poor organizational climate and leadership (e.g., toxic leaders, sexist climate, low psychological team safety), (b) negative behaviors (e.g., bullying, gender and ethnic harassment), and (c) poorer individual outcomes (burnout, job dissatisfaction, turnover intentions, lower organizational dedication, poorer psychological health). Although the evidence is correlational, the MCC seems a likely culprit as a cause of organizational dysfunction, breeding toxic leadership and misconduct that, in turn, leads to poor individual outcomes for employees. I suggest that mission-based interventions can mitigate MC norms by focusing instead on more productive ways to work.

Abstract: Synesthesia is an automatic and involuntary phenomenon in which one sensory modality evokes additional experiences in an unrelated modality (e.g., sounds evoking colors or tastes). Synesthesia is also associated with other psychological/neurological differences that can lead to savant-like traits. What is special about the brains' of synesthetes that leads to these experiences in only 4% of the population? And, if synesthetes’ brains are different, why can non-synesthetes acquire these sensations following drug-use or sensory deprivation? Dr. Brang will review wide-ranging evidence for synesthesia as a continuum of experiences that are present in the general population, neurobiological models underlying synesthesia-like phenomena, as well as the consequences of having synesthesia.

Bio: David Brang is an Assistant Professor in the Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience area in the Department of Psychology, where he directs the Multisensory Perception Lab. He received his BA in Cognitive Science and PhD in Psychology from the University of California, San Diego, and completed Post-Doctoral Fellowships at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. His research examines how the sensory systems (such as vision and hearing) influence one another in order to enable sensory signal recovery after brain damage or disease.

Title: Clinical Neuropsychologist and Professor of Psychiatry
Department of Psychiatry University of Utah

Abstract: Rumination is a feature of major depressive disorder, that is considered a passive, negative, and recurrent thought patterns and habits. Like negative cognitive biases, rumination reflects the thought content (negative, potentially distorted) typical of depression. Unlike negative cognitive biases, rumination also includes habitual tendencies in responding to stressors (avoidance, passivity) which are not clearly or necessarily ascribed to negative thought patterns. As depressive rumination includes both content and habit it has been difficult to measure well. The fact that it may reflect a disengaged state from active cognitive processing means that it is often ascertained through the absence of certain mental states and behaviors, which also makes measurement challenging. The talk will focus on fMRI paradigms that are thought to capture the ruminative state and habit, behavioral correlates of increased rumination, and the relations of rumination to depression risk, poor treatment response, and frequent recurrence of depression. Moreover, it will cover strategies to intervene to change rumination, and resulting changes in resting state connectivity and task-based brain activation.

Location: University Hospitals
Organized By: Michigan Neuroscience Institute

This annual lectureship features a pre-eminent neuroscientist and honors Bernard W. Agranoff, a leader in biochemistry and an internationally recognized expert in the neurosciences. Dr. Agranoff is a graduate of the University of Michigan who returned as a faculty member in 1960. He served as the Director of Mental Health Research Institute (now known as the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute) from 1985 to 1995 and was the Neuroscience Laboratory Building Director from 1983-2002. His scientific career helped establish that long-term memory formation requires de novo protein synthesis and also enhanced our understanding of the processes involved in nerve regeneration. The Lectureship builds upon a career dedicated to promoting excellence in research, education, and mental health care and is an enduring legacy to those seeking to improve our understanding of the brain and apply that knowledge to help those with brain disorders.

Dr. Richard Huganir is the 2019 Agranoff Lecturer. Dr. Huganir is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Neuroscience and Psychological and Brain Sciences and Director of the Solomon H. Snyder Department of Neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. His career has focused on synapses in the brain. His research has shown that the regulation of receptor function is a major mechanism for the regulation of neuronal excitability and connectivity in the brain and is critical for many higher brain processes, including learning and memory, and is a major determinant of behavior. Moreover, dysregulation of these mechanisms underlies many neurological and psychiatric diseases including Alzheimer’s, ALS, schizophrenia, autism, intellectual disability, PTSD as well as in chronic pain and drug addiction. Dr. Huganir is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences.

Join us Friday, November 8, 2019 from 9:30-11:00 am in Chrysler Center, Room 151 (2121 Bonisteel Blvd, Ann Arbor) for our Design Science Seminar Series with speaker Malcolm McCullough, Ph.D. Dr. McCullough is a Professor of Architecture, Taubman Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan. He is the author of the books Downtime on the Microgrid (forthcoming 2020), Ambient Commons (2013), Digital Ground (2005), and Abstracting Craft (1997) all with the MIT Press.

Whereas “the smart city” has most often been understood as a totality, top-down and always-on, in today’s climate-altered reality more agendas instead need to advance a more locally clustered, adaptive resilience. Otherwise, the most salient aspect of any future smart city is its fragility. While not a report on complexity simulations, this talk reexamines some perhaps-familiar principles of adaptive clustering from three less conventional perspectives.

Logics in Conflict: Campus Sexual Assault in a Time of Legal Uncertainty (November 8, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68560 68560-17096959@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 8, 2019 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

In 2011, the Office for Civil Rights, the Department of Education unit responsible for compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, circulated a “Dear Colleague Letter” (DCL) clarifying that peer sexual assault was sexual harassment and thus negligent responses could place schools in violation of Title IX. The 2011 DCL had major implications for the adjudication of peer sexual violence. Compliance with the DCL required American universities receiving federal funds to change their policies. Most did, a few did not. Among those that did, responses were more heterogenous than might have been expected given that federal funding is at stake. This heterogeneity is also puzzling theoretically, as socio-legal theorists expect organizations to display at least symbolic compliance with legal mandates. We argue that one reason for this puzzling response was that prior to 2011, most universities had policies to address what they referred to as “student sexual misconduct.” Peer-to-peer sexual violence was understood as a form of student misconduct, to be handled by student conduct professionals. While civil rights lawyers had come to understand peer sexual assault as a Title IX issue, this was not obvious to student conduct professionals. Nor were student conduct professionals prepared to cede their turf to civil rights experts. The ensuing collision between civil rights and student conduct logics generated a range of heterogeneous outcomes. Theoretically, we will discuss how organizational change is produced out of processes of organizational bricolage, or hybridization.

Through works of art spanning ancient to contemporary times, UMMA's exhibition Copies and Invention in East Asia challenges our understanding of originality, and presents copying as an act of imaginative interpretation. But what is the connection between copying and invention? How does the practice of copying an artist’s work increase a drawing student’s own creativity? How do computers look at works of art to learn how to emulate a particular artist’s style? Consider these questions along with Raj Rao Nadakuditi, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computers and expert in machine learning and signal processing; Jeff Evans, Clinical Associate Professor Emeritus of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Medical School, Lecturer in the Residential College, and scholar of the psychology of creativity; and Natsu Oyobe, UMMA Curator of Asian Art.

Serious scientists from a range of fields have been uncovering evidence that our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs can ease pain, heal wounds, fend off infection and heart disease, and even slow the progression of AIDS and some cancers. Author of the title book, Jo Marchant, explores the vast potential of the mind’s ability to heal, lays out its limitations, and explains how we can make use of these findings in our own lives.
Amazon Review: “With clarity and compassion, Marchant points the way towards a system of medicine that treats us not simply as bodies but as human beings.” So, let’s bring our open minds and our healthy skepticism to examine this fascinating look into the possible future of medicine. Mike Murray, instructor, is a Clinical Psychologist. This Study Group is for those 50 and over and meets Mondays, 10:00 am-12:00 pm on November 11 - December 16.

Location: Center for the Education of Women
Organized By: CEW+

The workshop is from 2-3:30, followed by a networking reception until 4:00.

There are several psychological and professional considerations that solo persons can use to survive in organizations and create change. The objectives of this workshop are (a) to focus on one professional consideration, namely, coalition building across social identity lines, and (b) to reflect on how three psychological considerations based on the social psychologist Serge Moscovici’s work can be utilized to create change. Part 1 will be to create a better understanding of the differences, but also the similarities we have with others and how our own social identity and cultural background could potentially limit us in building successful coalitions. Part 2 will introduce Moscovici’s work concerning how solo persons need to be persistent and consistent and have the self-confidence to bring about change. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss how these principles can be applied to their own situation and share strategies that might result in increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in their own organizational environment

ABSTRACT

Meaning and Metaphor

Words typically convey a rich and varied array of related meanings. A common way that word meaning is extended is via conceptual metaphors. For instance, we can talk about experiences as if they were food (a bitter pill; a treat). Such metaphorically extended words and phrases are regularly used even when literal paraphrases exist, which raises the question as to why metaphorical language is so common. fMRI work has found that literal meanings remain active even when words are used metaphorically, which may imply that metaphorical uses of words have richer semantic representations. Moreover, recent work has found that metaphorical statements and short stories activate the amygdala more than carefully matched literal paraphrases, indicating that conceptual metaphors are more engaging than their literal counterparts.

*The work to be presented was done in collaboration with Francesca Citron of Lancaster University.

UM Psychology Community Talk: The Science of Choking Under Pressure: Why we fail and how to succeed when it matters (November 25, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67441 67441-16855672@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 25, 2019 7:00pm

Abstract: Just in that moment when we want to do our best and the pressure is on, we often fail to live up to our potential. From sports to public-speaking to test-taking, many of us have experienced and witnessed "choking under pressure". What is happening in your brain and body when you choke in stressful situations? Is there anything we can do about it? In this talk, UM Psychology Professor Taraz Lee shares insights from the fields of Psychology and Neuroscience that shed light on the phenomenon of "choking under pressure" including some of the psychological tools you can use to perform at your best when it matters most.

Bio: Taraz Lee is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Michigan in the Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience Area and the head of the Cognition, Control, and Action (CoCoA) Lab. Using a variety of techniques such as functional neuroimaging, non-invasive brain stimulation, behavioral studies, and computational modeling, Prof. Lee and his lab study how motivation and executive control processes both help and hurt performance in a variety of domains. Many people have the intuition that exerting too much control over well-learned actions can be harmful, especially when under pressure to perform. At the same time, most day-to-day activities clearly benefit from goal-directed control and enhanced motivation. The CoCoA Lab is interested in understanding this apparent paradox. How do the mechanisms of executive control and motivation both support and potentially hamper the activity of neural systems needed for successful performance?

Title: A Dynamic Processing Model of Working Memory: Evidence from Behavior, Neuroimaging, and Neurostimulation

Abstract: Recent shifts in the understanding of how the mind and brain retain information in working memory (WM) call for revision to canonical theory. Evidence for the existence of dynamic, “activity-silent” short-term retention processes in the brain diverge from traditional models that have argued that items in WM are retained by sustained representation in buffers or activated states. Such evidence comes from the use of machine-learning analytic approaches to decode patterns of brain activity and the simultaneous administration of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to causally manipulate brain activity in specific areas and time-points. TMS has been used to 'ping' brain areas and reactivate latent representations retained in WM and affect memory performance, but only when the information is still relevant for the current trial. These findings argue for a supplement to the sustained retention mechanisms associated with attending to information in WM. Brain decoding methods reveal dynamic, hierarchical levels of representation in WM that vary according to task context, from perceptual/sensory codes in posterior areas to more conceptual/abstract codes distributed across frontal-parietal regions. A Dynamic Processing Model of WM is advanced to account for the overall pattern of results.

This lecture will explore the role of Yiddish in Freud's writings and in their translational afterlife. It will address the question not only about how much Yiddish Freud knew, but also about why this question persists, and what impulses and assumptions underlie it. In this regard, it will lay out the parallels between the psychoanalytic archeology of the stratified psyche and the linguistic structure of the modern Jewish self, recognizing this double structure in the hysteria and Yiddish translation work of Anna O./Bertha Pappenheim.

There is both an accessible elevator and gender-neutral restroom on the first and second floor. If you have a disability that requires an accommodation, contact judaicstudies@umich.edu or 734-763-9047.

CBT Group for Social and Performance Anxiety (December 3, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67160 67160-16909310@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, December 3, 2019 5:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Mary A. Rackham Institute

Clinicians at the Psychological Clinic use evidence-based group therapy to help participants learn to identify and shift unhealthy thinking patterns. You will build coping skills and increase confidence in a supportive environment and at your own pace. The group will meet on Tuesdays, beginning October 15, 2019, for eight weeks, with an additional follow-up booster session a month after the program’s conclusion.

If you think this group is the right fit for you, call the Psych Clinic at (734) 764-3471 to schedule an individual, preliminary screening. This screening will take 30-60 minutes. Some insurance is accepted to cover the cost. Without insurance the screening cost is $20. This screening allows you to work with a clinician to determine if the group is right for you.

Please send referrals by faxing a brief treatment summary or evaluation report to the Psychological Clinic, attention Michelle Van Etten Lee, Ph.D. The fax number is (734) 764-8128.

Abstract: Did you know that by the time a child is two or three years old they can tell a simple story? These early storytelling skills can help children develop a strong foundation for building later reading and writing skills. Research suggests that opportunities to practice telling stories helps children develop stronger language skills and a better understanding of how stories are structured. This presentation will review seven ways that young children's storytelling skills can impact their literacy development. The presentation will also share tips on how best to support young children to become better storytellers.

Bio: Nicole Gardner-Neblett, Ph.D., is a developmental psychologist whose work focuses on the individual and contextual factors that promote children’s language and literacy development. She adopts a strengths-based approach to understanding children’s development and identifying effective practices to transform the early learning experiences of young children. In particular, Dr. Gardner-Neblett’s work examines the oral narrative, or storytelling, skills of African American children and the implications for literacy development and educational practice.

This group will engage true stories that force us to think in new and unexpected ways about basic categories of human experience. To say it differently, these stories blow our minds. The stories include: Rubinstein, the “mad jester” of the Warsaw Ghetto; Chang and Eng: the original “Siamese twins’’; and American philosopher William James’s mysterious (to him) mystical experience in the Adirondack forest. Participants are invited to bring in stories that they believe have the same “mind-blowing” potential. Hank Greenspan is a psychologist, oral historian, essayist, and playwright recently retired from a teaching career at UM. He believes that to live is to schmooze. And to schmooze is to teach and to learn, together. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Tuesdays January 21 through February 25 (no class Feb. 18).

Title: High-dimensional Multivariate Mediation with Application to Neuroimaging Data

Abstract: Mediation analysis is an important tool in the behavioral sciences for investigating the role of intermediate variables that lie in the path between a randomized treatment/exposure and an outcome variable. The influence of the intermediate variable on the outcome is often explored using structural equation models (SEMs), with model coefficients interpreted as possible effects. While there has been significant research on the topic in recent years, little work has been done on mediation analysis when the intermediate variable (mediator) is a high-dimensional vector. In this work we introduce a novel method for mediation analysis in this setting called the directions of mediation (DMs). The DMs represent an orthogonal transformation of the space spanned by the set of mediators, chosen so that the transformed mediators are ranked based upon the proportion of the likelihood of the full SEM that they explain. We provide an estimation algorithm and establish the asymptotic properties of the obtained estimators. We demonstrate the method using a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study of thermal pain where we are interested in determining which brain locations mediate the relationship between the application of a thermal stimulus and self-reported pain.

Abstract: The words "urban" and "inner city" typically conjure up images of densely populated neighborhoods, crime, mean streets, isolation, and human struggle. Popular media plays on these representations. Missing from this familiar story are the everyday stories of goodness that occur in cities. This presentation draws on interviews with people who live in urban areas, including highly under-resourced urban areas, to explore how the human capacity for love, forgiveness and compassion emerges in everyday life in urban America. I use these stories to explore how we are all transformed by everyday encounters with love and human goodness.

Bio: Jacqueline S. Mattis, Ph.D. is Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on the role of religion and spirituality in the lives of African American and Afri-Caribbean youth and adults, and on the factors that are associated with positive psychological development of urban residing African Americans and Afri-Caribbeans. In particular, she explores the factors that contribute to altruism, compassion, empathy, forgiveness and optimism among urban-residing African American people.

Virtual colloquium (via BlueJeans) featuring Shravan Vasishth. Shravan Vasishth is professor of linguistics at the University of Potsdam, Germany, and holds the chair Psycholinguistics and Neurolinguistics (Language Processing). His research focuses on computational cognitive modeling, in particular, computational modeling of sentence processing in unimpaired and impaired populations, and the application of mathematical, computational, experimental, and statistical methods (particularly Bayesian methods) in linguistics and psychology.

ABSTRACT
Computational models of retrieval processes: An evaluation using benchmark data

The talk will begin by revisiting the key predictions of the ACT-R based model of sentence processing (Lewis and Vasishth, 2005, henceforth LV05). As discussed in Engelmann, Jäger, and Vasishth, 2020, the LV05 model predicts two classes of similarity-based interference effects: inhibitory and facilitatory interference. Jäger, Engelmann, and Vasishth, 2017, carried out a meta-analysis of some 100 existing effect estimates (self-paced reading and eyetracking during reading). This work showed that the LV05 model's predictions are only partly consistent with the current evidence available. A closer look at the published data suggests that the published studies are likely to be severely underpowered. As Gelman and Carlin, 2014, have pointed out, when power is low, statistically significant effect estimates will be highly misleading: either the effects will be overestimated, or the sign of the effect will be incorrect (for a real-life demonstration, see Vasishth, Mertzen, Jäger, and Gelman, 2018). Coupled with the problem of publication bias (in so-called high-impact journals, "big news" claims are published more often than "failed" studies or more tempered claims), these underpowered studies make theory evaluation difficult to impossible. What can we do as researchers? How to proceed?

In the second part of the talk, I show one way that we can resolve these problems. In their classic paper, Roberts and Pashler (2000) laid out two important criteria for model evaluation: the model needs to make quantitatively constrained predictions, and the effect estimates have to be measured with high precision. Modeling researchers usually have one more criterion: model evaluation should always be carried out in the context of a competing baseline model to be meaningful. As a case study of model evaluation, we compare the predictive performance (using k-fold cross-validation) of the LV05 model with a competing model of retrieval processes, the McElree 2003 direct-access model (Nicenboim and Vasishth, 2018). The evaluation data-set is a relatively high-precision study on inhibitory interference effects in German number agreement (Nicenboim, Vasishth, Engelmann, and Suckow, 2018).

While accommodation procedures for students are by now generally recognized and recognizable (although there is certainly still tremendous work to do on this front), the question of faculty accommodations is uncharted terrain on many college and university campuses. Beginning by articulating the concept of “signs of disability”—a means of making disability available for perception using a variety of embodied, environmental, and discursive practices—this talk moves through some of the experiences and encounters that disabled faculty have shared in research interviews, published accounts, and surveys. What such accounts reveal is that the emergence of disability and concomitant development of access and accommodation practices is part of a dynamic interrelationship between institutional cultures, environments for disability, and various ways that disability is available for noticing (or not-noticing) within faculty bodies and practices. The talk will conclude with some next-steps and questions for those interested and invested in creating more broadly inclusive academic environments for all members of the campus community, including faculty.

Abstract: What is it about twentysomethings today? Popular media portray young adults as selfish slackers who never want to grow up. Although the concept of delayed adulthood has some basis in reality, it can be argued that an extended period of exploration might be adaptive in the 21st century. In this talk, we will explore the impact of this slower transition to adulthood on the health and well-being of youth today as well as the diversity of their experiences as they seek to define themselves. Dr. Jodl will also offer some practical advice to parents on how to best support their young adults as they navigate the transition to adulthood.

Bio: Kathleen M. Jodl is the Jacquelynne S. Eccles Collegiate Lecturer of Psychology at the University of Michigan. She joined the Michigan community in 1997 after earning her doctorate in developmental psychology from the University of Virginia. Her research interests focus on family influences on adolescent development and the transition to adulthood. Over the last 10+ years, Dr. Jodl has taught thousands of undergraduates in a wide range of courses at UM including a gateway course in developmental psychology, social development, and a popular seminar on emerging adulthood. She brings a wealth of hands-on experience “living the dream” as the mother of four young adults ranging in age from 15 to 21 years.

Mindful Self-compassion (March 2, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70459 70459-17600672@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 2, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

This course will introduce participants to the principles of Mindful Self-compassion (MSC). Self-compassion can be defined as learning to treat yourself the way you would treat a good friend when they suffer, fall short, or fail in some way. MSC combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience. Mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing. It’s being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. The Study Group for those 50 and over led by Bernadette Beach is held Mondays March 2 through April 6.

The Massey TBI Grand Challenge supports high-impact proposals by funding milestone-driven research over a 12-month timeframe.

This event is made possible thanks to a generous gift from the Joyce and Don Massey Family Foundation. Up to $650,000 is available in 2020 to fund the development of diagnostic, device, therapeutic, or health IT solutions that address the initial ‘golden hours’ of care after severe traumatic brain injury (generally the first 48 hours). Additionally, this year ALL current/past awardees and new awardees will be eligible for the Schwabauer Accelerator Award of $40,000. This will be a separate application.

Note: To be considered for funding, you must attend the Grand Challenge event.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B, and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

Could you describe a person you saw briefly so that a police artist could draw a recognizable sketch? Could you pick that person out of a set of photos?  In this interactive session, Michigan Innocence Clinic Director Dave Moran, psychology student Aryn Margulis, and Ken Wyniemko, who was wrongfully convicted because of his resemblance to a police sketch, will engage the audience with identification experiments and present research about eyewitness identifications and how they lead to wrongful convictions.

Designed as a courtroom installation and a performance series by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan, Witness Lab frames witnessing as a social and artistic act. The gallery collapses courtroom, theater, classroom, laboratory, and artist studio in order to study the relationship between performance and law. Public programs, classes, and mock trial performances investigate who plays the role of the witness in our society, and help us to understand truth within our legal system.

In her investigation of America’s courts, McClellan’s practice engages K-12 and university classes across a spectrum of disciplines including law, drama, and anthropology, among others.

Due to the nature of the project, the schedule for all Witness Lab events and simulations are subject to change without notice and changes may not always be reflected in online listings.

Witness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED: We are working on a reschedule date.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MSBR) is a technique that can help individuals experiencing stress resulting from chronic physical and psychological conditions. Research has demonstrated MSBR has contributed to improved behavioral outcomes including better sleep, lower blood pressure, and fewer worries! This workshop is for clinicians who are interested in learning more about teaching MBSR or in seeking MBSR teacher certification.

This intense, interactive teacher training includes both experiencing sessions of MBSR and working in small groups to begin practicing teaching the MBSR program. Participants will strengthen their skills to embody a non-judgmental, present-moment focus with an understanding of how this supports and strengthens such mind states as kindness, compassion and equanimity. Daily meditation practice, yoga/mindful movement, and periods of silence are also part of the curriculum.

This training workshop is led by skilled mindfulness teacher trainers who are also experienced clinicians, mindfulness teachers, and retreat leaders. Join the Psych Clinic and Susan Woods, LCSW, a leader in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction therapy, for this MBSR training workshop!

Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science

Students and faculty are invited to attend the 10th anniversary Marshall M. Weinberg Symposium on Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11, 2020, at the U-M Michigan League.

Hosted by the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science, the Weinberg Symposium features presentations, posters, and discussion centered on the theme: “The Cognitive Science of Concepts: Contrasting Perspectives Across the Disciplines.” Concepts--mental representations that underpin thought and reasoning--are understood and investigated in different ways across cognitive science's sub-disciplines, for example in developmental psychology, the study of animal cognition, and the study of artificial minds / artificial intelligence (AI).

A keynote lecture, “Do Apes Believe? The Concept of 'Belief' in Great Apes and Human Children,” by Michael Tomasello (Duke University) kicks off the two-day symposium on Friday, April 10. The lecture will be followed by a poster session and reception.

The second day of the symposium, Saturday, April 11, will feature a range of contrasting and potentially complementary perspectives on concepts by leading scholars in several disciplines. Guest speakers include Marjorie Rhodes (New York University), Sandra Waxman (Northwestern University), Surya Ganguli (Stanford University), and Michael Strevens (New York University).

Saturday’s activities will also feature a panel discussion with U-M faculty, and ample time for participant and student interaction.

Please visit the 2020 Weinberg Symposium webpage to see the full agenda including speakers, presentation titles, and registration details.

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students: $500 and to Tauber students: $150. Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 15 (noon - 4:30 pm, Ross R-0420)
Sunday, March 29 (noon - 4:30 pm, Ross R-0420)
Sunday, April 5 (noon - 4:30 pm, Ross R-0420)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for April 26, 2020 (11:00 am) at the Ross School of Business, R-0320. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Over the last two years, all students who have taken the exam have passed!

Project Management is a powerful skillset to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:

NOTE: The $500 (for non-Tauber students) or $150 fee (for Tauber students) is non-refundable.

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

CANCELLED: UM Psychology Community Talk: Sex and the Brain: What Difference does it Make? (April 27, 2020 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71224 71224-17791924@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 27, 2020 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Department of Psychology

Note: This event has been cancelled.

Abstract: Have you ever wondered how males and females come to be different? Is it all cultural? Are the brains of females and males hardwired to be different? In this talk we will explore sex differences in brain and behavior and how the brain becomes individualized in female and males. We will see that during development, genetics, hormones, and the environment all act on the brain to influence neuronal growth and connections. This can result in sex dependent development of the brain, as an individual interacts with the environment during maturation. We will discuss what this means for the brain and for behavior of males and females during childhood, adolescence and adulthood and the implications for cognitive function. Then, we will consider sex differences in the motivation to take drugs of abuse and drug taking behavior. Sex differences in addiction are seen for all classes of abused drugs in humans and animal models. These sex differences in the neural mechanisms of addiction have implications for interventions and treatment that will be discussed.

Bio: Dr. Becker received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is the Patricia Y. Gurin Collegiate Professor of Psychology, Research Professor in the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute, and Senior Neuroscience Scholar, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Becker is the author of over 150 articles or chapters and has had numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Becker’s research of the last 30 years has been investigating how gender/sex and ovarian hormones influence brain and behavior. These findings are important for our understanding of the underlying neural processes involved in sex differences in drug abuse and other neurological disorders.

Meaning and Power of Dreams (April 28, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70503 70503-17602785@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 28, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Dreams are typically important, unconscious messages, bringing issues from the past to the present. They often contain direct or disguised wishes and/or fears. In this class we will discuss typical dreams: the recurring dream, the remembered dream of the past, the “I’m not prepared” dream (e.g. taking the final exam without having read the text). The instructor will bring examples from some of his patients, and will invite class members (including himself) to bring their own. The goal of this class is for participants to make better sense of these nightly messages, helping some of the playful and significant insights to emerge. Mort Chethik is an emeritus professor of Psychiatry at UM. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Tuesdays April 28 through June 2.
