This group will engage true stories that force us to think in new and unexpected ways about basic categories of human experience. To say it differently, these stories blow our minds. The stories include: Rubinstein, the “mad jester” of the Warsaw Ghetto; Chang and Eng: the original “Siamese twins’’; and American philosopher William James’s mysterious (to him) mystical experience in the Adirondack forest. Participants are invited to bring in stories that they believe have the same “mind-blowing” potential. Hank Greenspan is a psychologist, oral historian, essayist, and playwright recently retired from a teaching career at UM. He believes that to live is to schmooze. And to schmooze is to teach and to learn, together. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Tuesdays January 21 through February 25 (no class Feb. 18).

Title: High-dimensional Multivariate Mediation with Application to Neuroimaging Data

Abstract: Mediation analysis is an important tool in the behavioral sciences for investigating the role of intermediate variables that lie in the path between a randomized treatment/exposure and an outcome variable. The influence of the intermediate variable on the outcome is often explored using structural equation models (SEMs), with model coefficients interpreted as possible effects. While there has been significant research on the topic in recent years, little work has been done on mediation analysis when the intermediate variable (mediator) is a high-dimensional vector. In this work we introduce a novel method for mediation analysis in this setting called the directions of mediation (DMs). The DMs represent an orthogonal transformation of the space spanned by the set of mediators, chosen so that the transformed mediators are ranked based upon the proportion of the likelihood of the full SEM that they explain. We provide an estimation algorithm and establish the asymptotic properties of the obtained estimators. We demonstrate the method using a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study of thermal pain where we are interested in determining which brain locations mediate the relationship between the application of a thermal stimulus and self-reported pain.

Abstract: The words "urban" and "inner city" typically conjure up images of densely populated neighborhoods, crime, mean streets, isolation, and human struggle. Popular media plays on these representations. Missing from this familiar story are the everyday stories of goodness that occur in cities. This presentation draws on interviews with people who live in urban areas, including highly under-resourced urban areas, to explore how the human capacity for love, forgiveness and compassion emerges in everyday life in urban America. I use these stories to explore how we are all transformed by everyday encounters with love and human goodness.

Bio: Jacqueline S. Mattis, Ph.D. is Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on the role of religion and spirituality in the lives of African American and Afri-Caribbean youth and adults, and on the factors that are associated with positive psychological development of urban residing African Americans and Afri-Caribbeans. In particular, she explores the factors that contribute to altruism, compassion, empathy, forgiveness and optimism among urban-residing African American people.

Virtual colloquium (via BlueJeans) featuring Shravan Vasishth. Shravan Vasishth is professor of linguistics at the University of Potsdam, Germany, and holds the chair Psycholinguistics and Neurolinguistics (Language Processing). His research focuses on computational cognitive modeling, in particular, computational modeling of sentence processing in unimpaired and impaired populations, and the application of mathematical, computational, experimental, and statistical methods (particularly Bayesian methods) in linguistics and psychology.

ABSTRACT
Computational models of retrieval processes: An evaluation using benchmark data

The talk will begin by revisiting the key predictions of the ACT-R based model of sentence processing (Lewis and Vasishth, 2005, henceforth LV05). As discussed in Engelmann, Jäger, and Vasishth, 2020, the LV05 model predicts two classes of similarity-based interference effects: inhibitory and facilitatory interference. Jäger, Engelmann, and Vasishth, 2017, carried out a meta-analysis of some 100 existing effect estimates (self-paced reading and eyetracking during reading). This work showed that the LV05 model's predictions are only partly consistent with the current evidence available. A closer look at the published data suggests that the published studies are likely to be severely underpowered. As Gelman and Carlin, 2014, have pointed out, when power is low, statistically significant effect estimates will be highly misleading: either the effects will be overestimated, or the sign of the effect will be incorrect (for a real-life demonstration, see Vasishth, Mertzen, Jäger, and Gelman, 2018). Coupled with the problem of publication bias (in so-called high-impact journals, "big news" claims are published more often than "failed" studies or more tempered claims), these underpowered studies make theory evaluation difficult to impossible. What can we do as researchers? How to proceed?

In the second part of the talk, I show one way that we can resolve these problems. In their classic paper, Roberts and Pashler (2000) laid out two important criteria for model evaluation: the model needs to make quantitatively constrained predictions, and the effect estimates have to be measured with high precision. Modeling researchers usually have one more criterion: model evaluation should always be carried out in the context of a competing baseline model to be meaningful. As a case study of model evaluation, we compare the predictive performance (using k-fold cross-validation) of the LV05 model with a competing model of retrieval processes, the McElree 2003 direct-access model (Nicenboim and Vasishth, 2018). The evaluation data-set is a relatively high-precision study on inhibitory interference effects in German number agreement (Nicenboim, Vasishth, Engelmann, and Suckow, 2018).

While accommodation procedures for students are by now generally recognized and recognizable (although there is certainly still tremendous work to do on this front), the question of faculty accommodations is uncharted terrain on many college and university campuses. Beginning by articulating the concept of “signs of disability”—a means of making disability available for perception using a variety of embodied, environmental, and discursive practices—this talk moves through some of the experiences and encounters that disabled faculty have shared in research interviews, published accounts, and surveys. What such accounts reveal is that the emergence of disability and concomitant development of access and accommodation practices is part of a dynamic interrelationship between institutional cultures, environments for disability, and various ways that disability is available for noticing (or not-noticing) within faculty bodies and practices. The talk will conclude with some next-steps and questions for those interested and invested in creating more broadly inclusive academic environments for all members of the campus community, including faculty.

Abstract: What is it about twentysomethings today? Popular media portray young adults as selfish slackers who never want to grow up. Although the concept of delayed adulthood has some basis in reality, it can be argued that an extended period of exploration might be adaptive in the 21st century. In this talk, we will explore the impact of this slower transition to adulthood on the health and well-being of youth today as well as the diversity of their experiences as they seek to define themselves. Dr. Jodl will also offer some practical advice to parents on how to best support their young adults as they navigate the transition to adulthood.

Bio: Kathleen M. Jodl is the Jacquelynne S. Eccles Collegiate Lecturer of Psychology at the University of Michigan. She joined the Michigan community in 1997 after earning her doctorate in developmental psychology from the University of Virginia. Her research interests focus on family influences on adolescent development and the transition to adulthood. Over the last 10+ years, Dr. Jodl has taught thousands of undergraduates in a wide range of courses at UM including a gateway course in developmental psychology, social development, and a popular seminar on emerging adulthood. She brings a wealth of hands-on experience “living the dream” as the mother of four young adults ranging in age from 15 to 21 years.

Mindful Self-compassion (March 2, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70459 70459-17600672@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 2, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

This course will introduce participants to the principles of Mindful Self-compassion (MSC). Self-compassion can be defined as learning to treat yourself the way you would treat a good friend when they suffer, fall short, or fail in some way. MSC combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience. Mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing. It’s being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. The Study Group for those 50 and over led by Bernadette Beach is held Mondays March 2 through April 6.

The Massey TBI Grand Challenge supports high-impact proposals by funding milestone-driven research over a 12-month timeframe.

This event is made possible thanks to a generous gift from the Joyce and Don Massey Family Foundation. Up to $650,000 is available in 2020 to fund the development of diagnostic, device, therapeutic, or health IT solutions that address the initial ‘golden hours’ of care after severe traumatic brain injury (generally the first 48 hours). Additionally, this year ALL current/past awardees and new awardees will be eligible for the Schwabauer Accelerator Award of $40,000. This will be a separate application.

Note: To be considered for funding, you must attend the Grand Challenge event.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B, and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

Could you describe a person you saw briefly so that a police artist could draw a recognizable sketch? Could you pick that person out of a set of photos?  In this interactive session, Michigan Innocence Clinic Director Dave Moran, psychology student Aryn Margulis, and Ken Wyniemko, who was wrongfully convicted because of his resemblance to a police sketch, will engage the audience with identification experiments and present research about eyewitness identifications and how they lead to wrongful convictions.

Designed as a courtroom installation and a performance series by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan, Witness Lab frames witnessing as a social and artistic act. The gallery collapses courtroom, theater, classroom, laboratory, and artist studio in order to study the relationship between performance and law. Public programs, classes, and mock trial performances investigate who plays the role of the witness in our society, and help us to understand truth within our legal system.

In her investigation of America’s courts, McClellan’s practice engages K-12 and university classes across a spectrum of disciplines including law, drama, and anthropology, among others.

Due to the nature of the project, the schedule for all Witness Lab events and simulations are subject to change without notice and changes may not always be reflected in online listings.

Witness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED: We are working on a reschedule date.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MSBR) is a technique that can help individuals experiencing stress resulting from chronic physical and psychological conditions. Research has demonstrated MSBR has contributed to improved behavioral outcomes including better sleep, lower blood pressure, and fewer worries! This workshop is for clinicians who are interested in learning more about teaching MBSR or in seeking MBSR teacher certification.

This intense, interactive teacher training includes both experiencing sessions of MBSR and working in small groups to begin practicing teaching the MBSR program. Participants will strengthen their skills to embody a non-judgmental, present-moment focus with an understanding of how this supports and strengthens such mind states as kindness, compassion and equanimity. Daily meditation practice, yoga/mindful movement, and periods of silence are also part of the curriculum.

This training workshop is led by skilled mindfulness teacher trainers who are also experienced clinicians, mindfulness teachers, and retreat leaders. Join the Psych Clinic and Susan Woods, LCSW, a leader in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction therapy, for this MBSR training workshop!

Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science

Students and faculty are invited to attend the 10th anniversary Marshall M. Weinberg Symposium on Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11, 2020, at the U-M Michigan League.

Hosted by the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science, the Weinberg Symposium features presentations, posters, and discussion centered on the theme: “The Cognitive Science of Concepts: Contrasting Perspectives Across the Disciplines.” Concepts--mental representations that underpin thought and reasoning--are understood and investigated in different ways across cognitive science's sub-disciplines, for example in developmental psychology, the study of animal cognition, and the study of artificial minds / artificial intelligence (AI).

A keynote lecture, “Do Apes Believe? The Concept of 'Belief' in Great Apes and Human Children,” by Michael Tomasello (Duke University) kicks off the two-day symposium on Friday, April 10. The lecture will be followed by a poster session and reception.

The second day of the symposium, Saturday, April 11, will feature a range of contrasting and potentially complementary perspectives on concepts by leading scholars in several disciplines. Guest speakers include Marjorie Rhodes (New York University), Sandra Waxman (Northwestern University), Surya Ganguli (Stanford University), and Michael Strevens (New York University).

Saturday’s activities will also feature a panel discussion with U-M faculty, and ample time for participant and student interaction.

Please visit the 2020 Weinberg Symposium webpage to see the full agenda including speakers, presentation titles, and registration details.

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students: $500 and to Tauber students: $150. Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 15 (noon - 4:30 pm, Ross R-0420)
Sunday, March 29 (noon - 4:30 pm, Ross R-0420)
Sunday, April 5 (noon - 4:30 pm, Ross R-0420)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for April 26, 2020 (11:00 am) at the Ross School of Business, R-0320. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Over the last two years, all students who have taken the exam have passed!

Project Management is a powerful skillset to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:
http://myumi.ch/dO5Nl

NOTE: The $500 (for non-Tauber students) or $150 fee (for Tauber students) is non-refundable.

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

CANCELLED: UM Psychology Community Talk: Sex and the Brain: What Difference does it Make? (April 27, 2020 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71224 71224-17791924@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 27, 2020 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Department of Psychology

Note: This event has been cancelled.

Abstract: Have you ever wondered how males and females come to be different? Is it all cultural? Are the brains of females and males hardwired to be different? In this talk we will explore sex differences in brain and behavior and how the brain becomes individualized in female and males. We will see that during development, genetics, hormones, and the environment all act on the brain to influence neuronal growth and connections. This can result in sex dependent development of the brain, as an individual interacts with the environment during maturation. We will discuss what this means for the brain and for behavior of males and females during childhood, adolescence and adulthood and the implications for cognitive function. Then, we will consider sex differences in the motivation to take drugs of abuse and drug taking behavior. Sex differences in addiction are seen for all classes of abused drugs in humans and animal models. These sex differences in the neural mechanisms of addiction have implications for interventions and treatment that will be discussed.

Bio: Dr. Becker received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is the Patricia Y. Gurin Collegiate Professor of Psychology, Research Professor in the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute, and Senior Neuroscience Scholar, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Becker is the author of over 150 articles or chapters and has had numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Becker’s research of the last 30 years has been investigating how gender/sex and ovarian hormones influence brain and behavior. These findings are important for our understanding of the underlying neural processes involved in sex differences in drug abuse and other neurological disorders.

Meaning and Power of Dreams (April 28, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70503 70503-17602785@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 28, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Dreams are typically important, unconscious messages, bringing issues from the past to the present. They often contain direct or disguised wishes and/or fears. In this class we will discuss typical dreams: the recurring dream, the remembered dream of the past, the “I’m not prepared” dream (e.g. taking the final exam without having read the text). The instructor will bring examples from some of his patients, and will invite class members (including himself) to bring their own. The goal of this class is for participants to make better sense of these nightly messages, helping some of the playful and significant insights to emerge. Mort Chethik is an emeritus professor of Psychiatry at UM. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Tuesdays April 28 through June 2.

COVID-19 has both immediate and long-term consequences for the health and well-being of Americans. Older adults are not only at higher risk for severe illness from the disease, but may also be especially vulnerable to social and emotional harms associated with the pandemic. In this ISR Insights talk, Jessica Finlay (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Social Environment and Health, ISR) and Lindsay Kobayashi (Assistant Professor, Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health, School of Public Health) will discuss insights from the COVID-19 Coping Study of nearly 7,000 adults aged 55+ from across the country. The talk will share participants’ perspectives and diverse experiences during the first upswing of the pandemic, including major sources of stress and ways of coping.

If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu.

ISR Insights Speaker Series - School Mental Health in the Detroit Public Schools Community District

August 25, 11am EST: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98456054707
Robin Jacob, PhD, Co-Director Youth Policy Lab
Elizabeth Koschmann, PhD, TRAILS Program Director

In recent years, rates of child and adolescent mental illness have skyrocketed. Nearly half of adolescents in the United States will experience symptoms of a mental illness before age 18, and one in five will be severely impaired by their symptoms. Among youth ages 10-24, suicide has become the second leading cause of death, killing almost 8,000 young people annually. These problems may be acerbated in urban, high poverty schools. There is evidence of higher rates of both mental illness and self-injury and suicidal behavior in communities of color which is hypothesized to reflect the impact of systemic racism, as well as significant racial disparities in access to high quality health and mental health care. Schools are uniquely positioned to identify and respond to students’ mental health care needs, and to reduce widespread inequities in access to effective prevention and early intervention services. However, only limited data is available on the prevalence and pattern of mental health challenges in urban schools or about the school or district resources available to address those challenges.

This study presents data collected as part of a partnership between TRAILS (Transforming Research into Action to Improve the Lives of Students), the Youth Policy Lab, and the Detroit Public Schools Community District. In 2019, our study team collected survey data from nearly 3,500 DPSCD teachers, administrators, school staff, almost 11,000 students, and 800 families. In this talk, Drs. Robin Jacob and Elizabeth Koschmann will share findings on (1) the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and exposure to traumatic events among students, (2) the degree to which these are associated with school engagement, absences, and other behaviors, and (3) the challenges staff and district administrators face in providing mental health services for their students.

This webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.

Just as being a graduate student is very different from being an undergraduate so are the ways in which you figure out which programs are the best fit for you, and successfully apply for them. This session will be especially relevant to juniors and seniors in the process of researching and applying to graduate school: How to find the right programs, how to structure your personal statement and get strong recommendation letters, do you have to take the GRE – and what if you don’t score as well as you’d like? However, we’ll also talk about what you should be doing to prepare as early as your sophomore or even freshman year. We’ll have both a short presentation and a panel of graduate students, including those who have recently served on admissions committees.

Why do we do the things we do? Computational models in Cognitive Science such as Reinforcement Learning often focus on extrinsic motivation. However, motivational researchers have made a distinction between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation depending on whether motivation comes from outside (extrinsic) or inside (intrinsic) an individual. Research has shown that there is an interesting relationship between extrinsic rewards and intrinsic motivation. Based on this relationship, we will discuss how to effectively use external rewards to motivate behaviors.

Study abroad is not just for juniors. It's not just for language and international studies majors. It's not just for students from certain communities or socioeconomic backgrounds. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you’re studying, a study abroad experience is available to you during your time at Michigan.

Whether you want to develop the skills you’ll need to compete in a global economy, cultivate your language competencies, or build meaningful connections with people from around the world, this is the best time in your life for a global experience.

Studying abroad often proves to be a pivotal experience, but deciding which program is the best fit can be daunting as you consider questions such as: How will this enhance my course of study? When should I go? For how long? Where? Can I afford it? How do I prepare? Will my credits transfer? The CGIS Study Abroad Virtual Fair is the best time to get all of your questions answered!

The Psychology of Pathogen Avoidance: How Does It Work and How Relevant Is It for Understanding Pandemic Behavior? (October 15, 2020 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78467 78467-20050321@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 15, 2020 5:00pm

Infectious diseases have been some of humanity's biggest killers. Fortunately, we possess an evolved psychology of pathogen avoidance - a system of mental mechanisms that help us identify, track, and respond to such dangers, thereby reducing risks of infection. Unfortunately, this system is imperfect - we mistake which information is diagnostic, leading to faulty assumptions, pernicious attitudes, and bad decisions. I will review recent work in our lab focusing on how we conceptualize pathogen threats and consequences of this process. Additionally, I will discuss when our understanding of pathogen avoidance psychology can inform explanations of pandemic behavior, and more importantly, why it might not.

Is reading code more like reading prose or more like doing math? Is balancing a tree data structure like balancing a pencil on your finger? Is learning a programming language like learning a natural language? How can we make novices more like experts faster? To answer these questions, this talk presents a high-level summary of work at the intersection of computer science and psychology, in which techniques like functional magnetic resonance imaging are used to study patterns of neural activity associated with coding tasks. We will cover some background information on psychology as well as some recent results in computer science. In addition, we will highlight efforts involving U-M undergraduate researchers and elaborate on career paths for those interested in pursuing similar topics.

Getting involved in research is a great way to build your skills and get the “behind the scenes” look into the science that you later learn about in your textbooks and classes. If you’re thinking of going to graduate or medical school, ideally you want to be starting in a lab by your sophomore year and in most cases no later than your junior year. But how do you find and apply for a position? And what do you do if there’s a pandemic and no positions are available? We’ll go over tips for both these situations.

Reinforcement Learning for Sparse-Reward Object-Interaction Tasks in a First-person Simulated 3D Environment (November 5, 2020 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79137 79137-20215738@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 5, 2020 5:00pm

First-person object-interaction tasks in high-fidelity, 3D, simulated environments such as the AI2Thor virtual home-environment pose significant sample-efficiency challenges for reinforcement learning (RL) agents learning from sparse task rewards. To alleviate these challenges, prior work has provided extensive supervision via a combination of reward-shaping, ground-truth object-information, and expert demonstrations. In this work, we show that one can learn object-interaction tasks from scratch without supervision by learning an attentive object-model as an auxiliary task during task learning with an object-centric relational RL agent. Our key insight is that learning an object-model that incorporates object-relationships into forward prediction provides a dense learning signal for unsupervised representation learning of both objects and their relationships. This, in turn, enables faster policy learning for an object-centric relational RL agent. We demonstrate our agent by introducing a set of challenging object-interaction tasks in the AI2Thor environment where learning with our attentive object-model is key to strong performance. Specifically, by comparing our agent and relational RL agents with alternative auxiliary tasks with a relational RL agent equipped with ground-truth object-information, we find that learning with our object-model best closes the performance gap in terms of both learning speed and maximum success rate. Additionally, we find that incorporating object-relationships into an object-model's forward predictions is key to learning representations that capture object-category and object-state.

Abstract: Demanding cognitive functions like working memory (WM) depend on functional brain networks being able to communicate efficiently while also maintaining some degree of modularity. Evidence suggests that aging can disrupt this balance between integration and modularity. In this study, we examined how cognitive training affects the integration and modularity of functional networks in older and younger adults. 23 younger and 23 older adults participated in 10 days of verbal WM training, leading to performance gains in both age groups. Older adults exhibited lower modularity overall and a greater decrement when switching from rest to task, compared to younger adults. Interestingly, younger but not older adults showed increased task-related modularity with training. Furthermore, whereas training increased efficiency within, and decreased participation of, the default-mode network for younger adults, it enhanced efficiency within a task-specific salience/sensorimotor network for older adults. Finally, training increased segregation of the default-mode from fronto-parietal/salience and visual networks in younger adults, while it diffusely increased between-network connectivity in older adults. Thus, while younger adults increase network segregation with training, suggesting more automated processing, older adults persist in, and potentially amplify, a more integrated and costly global workspace, suggesting different age-related trajectories in functional network reorganization with WM training.

“The Weight of Honor” is the first comprehensive documentary to chronicle the lives of families caring for their
catastrophically wounded returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Over the course of five years, the film follows the arc of what
happens when some of America's best and strongest volunteer to protect our nation, but return home physically and emotionally
broken and disillusioned. What happens when they return is not only a personal journey but also that of their family caregivers who
have no training other than the love for their wounded. Our military does not prepare families for the return of a wounded warrior.
“The Weight of Honor” tells their stories of strength, exhaustion, conflict, and even humor as they chart a course through the

On October 8, 2013 Malala Yousafzai appeared on the Daily Show to talk about her harrowing experience surviving the Taliban’s attempt to assassinate her. At one point during the interview she described how she reacted when she discovered that the Taliban were planning to kill her. “I used to think that the Tali[ban] would come and he would just kill me,” she told to Stewart. “But then I said, if he comes, what would you do Malala? Then I would reply to myself, Malala just take a shoe and hit him…”

Malala’s interview provides a window into the at times curious ways that we reflect on our lives. Although we all have an inner monologue that we engage in from time to time, an inner voice that guides our moment-to-moment reflections, people often report referring to themselves in strikingly different ways when they introspect. Whereas people typically use 1st person singular pronouns (e.g., I, me, my) to refer to themselves during introspection, they at times also use their own name and other non-1st-person pronouns to refer to themselves as well.

In this talk, Professor Ethan Kross will review findings from a growing body of psychological and neuroscience research, which suggests that far from representing a simple quirk of speech, engaging in such distanced self-talk enhances people’s ability to control their thoughts, feelings and behavior under stress.

Abstract: The neural basis of consciousness is one of the most challenging and fundamental questions in science. Evidence from noninvasive functional neuroimaging studies has pointed to two distinct cortical systems that may mediate the ongoing stream of human consciousness, an internally directed system – default mode network (DMN) and an externally directed system – dorsal attention network (DAT). During Dr. Huang’s talk, he will present one of his recently published studies (Huang et al., 2020, Science Advances) entitled “Temporal Circuit of Macroscale Dynamic Brain Activity Supports Human Consciousness”. In this work, he and his colleagues examined how the two systems are regulated in the conscious brain, and how they are disrupted when consciousness is diminished. They developed a concept, the “temporal circuit”, characterized by a set of trajectories along which the dynamic brain activity occurs. The transitions between the DMN and DAT are embedded in the temporal circuit, where a balanced reciprocal accessibility of brain states is characteristic of consciousness. In contrast, an isolation of the DMN and DAT from the temporal circuit underlies unconsciousness of diverse etiologies. These findings provide new mechanistic understanding on the functional role of anti-correlated systems and consciousness. Next, Dr. Huang will discuss some ongoing and extended work on determining which brain region plays a key role in controlling the DMN-DAT transitions and in gating conscious access (i.e., the availability of consciously perceived information to cognitive processors).

ISR Insights Speaker Series is a series focusing on the research happening at ISR.

Jason Owen-Smith (Executive Director, Institute for Research on Innovation & Science (IRIS); Executive Director, Research Analytics; Professor of Sociology, University of Michigan; Research Professor, Institute for Social Research)

Wednesday, December 2 at 2pm EST: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91211224326

America's most research intensive universities represent about 3% of higher education institutions, but they conduct 90% of the nation's academic research. Drawing on his recent book, Research Universities and the Public Good: Discovery for an Uncertain Future and the work of ISR's Institute for Research on Innovation & Science (IRIS), which he directs, Jason Owen-Smith will explain how these unique and essential organizations serve as an important form of "social insurance" in the face of an uncertain future. Universities like U of M are uniquely able to address "unknown unknowns," problems and opportunities we do not know we have yet. No other sector or type of organization accomplishes is equipped to serve this purpose in our society. COVID-19 puts special pressures on the academic research mission that come after more than a decade of declining public support. The pandemic and its effects jeopardize the US Academic Research Enterprise (US-ARE) and with it the future health, wealth, and well-being of our nation and the world. Drawing on unique data science resources developed at IRIS, and 20 years of work on the economic and social value of research and innovation, Owen-Smith highlights the challenges and explains how they might be addressed by federal and state policy-makers, the leaders and faculty of institutions like ours.

You're invited to join our senior Social Theory & Practice (STP) majors as they present their thesis research on topics ranging from sustainable food in MDining to dialectical steps toward non-capitalism, Tuesday December 8 from 4:10 - 5:30pm at https://umich.zoom.us/j/97960464467.

The Residential College STP major supports students in developing the analytical and practical skills necessary for active engagement in the world and for building careers that promote equality and responsible citizenship. Students learn theories, methods, and strategies that enable them to understand and critique social structures and processes, and choose a focus of study that can encompass sociology, political science, history, anthropology, economics, education, environmental justice, sustainable agriculture, geography, and psychology to approach current issues in U.S. society and the global environment. Like our students, no two STP major plans are alike.
