Wednesday, July 15, 1pm
https://umich.zoom.us/j/92804413123

COVID-19 has both immediate and long-term consequences for the health and well-being of Americans. Older adults are not only at higher risk for severe illness from the disease, but may also be especially vulnerable to social and emotional harms associated with the pandemic. In this ISR Insights talk, Jessica Finlay (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Social Environment and Health, ISR) and Lindsay Kobayashi (Assistant Professor, Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health, School of Public Health) will discuss insights from the COVID-19 Coping Study of nearly 7,000 adults aged 55+ from across the country. The talk will share participants’ perspectives and diverse experiences during the first upswing of the pandemic, including major sources of stress and ways of coping.

ISR Insights Speaker Series - School Mental Health in the Detroit Public Schools Community District

August 25, 11am EST: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98456054707
Robin Jacob, PhD, Co-Director Youth Policy Lab
Elizabeth Koschmann, PhD, TRAILS Program Director

In recent years, rates of child and adolescent mental illness have skyrocketed. Nearly half of adolescents in the United States will experience symptoms of a mental illness before age 18, and one in five will be severely impaired by their symptoms. Among youth ages 10-24, suicide has become the second leading cause of death, killing almost 8,000 young people annually. These problems may be acerbated in urban, high poverty schools. There is evidence of higher rates of both mental illness and self-injury and suicidal behavior in communities of color which is hypothesized to reflect the impact of systemic racism, as well as significant racial disparities in access to high quality health and mental health care. Schools are uniquely positioned to identify and respond to students’ mental health care needs, and to reduce widespread inequities in access to effective prevention and early intervention services. However, only limited data is available on the prevalence and pattern of mental health challenges in urban schools or about the school or district resources available to address those challenges.

This study presents data collected as part of a partnership between TRAILS (Transforming Research into Action to Improve the Lives of Students), the Youth Policy Lab, and the Detroit Public Schools Community District. In 2019, our study team collected survey data from nearly 3,500 DPSCD teachers, administrators, school staff, almost 11,000 students, and 800 families. In this talk, Drs. Robin Jacob and Elizabeth Koschmann will share findings on (1) the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and exposure to traumatic events among students, (2) the degree to which these are associated with school engagement, absences, and other behaviors, and (3) the challenges staff and district administrators face in providing mental health services for their students.

This webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.

Just as being a graduate student is very different from being an undergraduate so are the ways in which you figure out which programs are the best fit for you, and successfully apply for them. This session will be especially relevant to juniors and seniors in the process of researching and applying to graduate school: How to find the right programs, how to structure your personal statement and get strong recommendation letters, do you have to take the GRE – and what if you don’t score as well as you’d like? However, we’ll also talk about what you should be doing to prepare as early as your sophomore or even freshman year. We’ll have both a short presentation and a panel of graduate students, including those who have recently served on admissions committees.

Why do we do the things we do? Computational models in Cognitive Science such as Reinforcement Learning often focus on extrinsic motivation. However, motivational researchers have made a distinction between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation depending on whether motivation comes from outside (extrinsic) or inside (intrinsic) an individual. Research has shown that there is an interesting relationship between extrinsic rewards and intrinsic motivation. Based on this relationship, we will discuss how to effectively use external rewards to motivate behaviors.

Study abroad is not just for juniors. It's not just for language and international studies majors. It's not just for students from certain communities or socioeconomic backgrounds. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you’re studying, a study abroad experience is available to you during your time at Michigan.

Whether you want to develop the skills you’ll need to compete in a global economy, cultivate your language competencies, or build meaningful connections with people from around the world, this is the best time in your life for a global experience.

Studying abroad often proves to be a pivotal experience, but deciding which program is the best fit can be daunting as you consider questions such as: How will this enhance my course of study? When should I go? For how long? Where? Can I afford it? How do I prepare? Will my credits transfer? The CGIS Study Abroad Virtual Fair is the best time to get all of your questions answered!

During the day of the virtual fair, you'll have instant access to academic advisors, education abroad advisors, Office of Financial Aid & LSA Scholarship Office representatives, and program representatives as well as scheduled events throughout the fair!

The Psychology of Pathogen Avoidance: How Does It Work and How Relevant Is It for Understanding Pandemic Behavior? (October 15, 2020 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78467 78467-20050321@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 15, 2020 5:00pm

Infectious diseases have been some of humanity's biggest killers. Fortunately, we possess an evolved psychology of pathogen avoidance - a system of mental mechanisms that help us identify, track, and respond to such dangers, thereby reducing risks of infection. Unfortunately, this system is imperfect - we mistake which information is diagnostic, leading to faulty assumptions, pernicious attitudes, and bad decisions. I will review recent work in our lab focusing on how we conceptualize pathogen threats and consequences of this process. Additionally, I will discuss when our understanding of pathogen avoidance psychology can inform explanations of pandemic behavior, and more importantly, why it might not.

Is reading code more like reading prose or more like doing math? Is balancing a tree data structure like balancing a pencil on your finger? Is learning a programming language like learning a natural language? How can we make novices more like experts faster? To answer these questions, this talk presents a high-level summary of work at the intersection of computer science and psychology, in which techniques like functional magnetic resonance imaging are used to study patterns of neural activity associated with coding tasks. We will cover some background information on psychology as well as some recent results in computer science. In addition, we will highlight efforts involving U-M undergraduate researchers and elaborate on career paths for those interested in pursuing similar topics.

Getting involved in research is a great way to build your skills and get the “behind the scenes” look into the science that you later learn about in your textbooks and classes. If you’re thinking of going to graduate or medical school, ideally you want to be starting in a lab by your sophomore year and in most cases no later than your junior year. But how do you find and apply for a position? And what do you do if there’s a pandemic and no positions are available? We’ll go over tips for both these situations.

Reinforcement Learning for Sparse-Reward Object-Interaction Tasks in a First-person Simulated 3D Environment (November 5, 2020 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79137 79137-20215738@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 5, 2020 5:00pm

First-person object-interaction tasks in high-fidelity, 3D, simulated environments such as the AI2Thor virtual home-environment pose significant sample-efficiency challenges for reinforcement learning (RL) agents learning from sparse task rewards. To alleviate these challenges, prior work has provided extensive supervision via a combination of reward-shaping, ground-truth object-information, and expert demonstrations. In this work, we show that one can learn object-interaction tasks from scratch without supervision by learning an attentive object-model as an auxiliary task during task learning with an object-centric relational RL agent. Our key insight is that learning an object-model that incorporates object-relationships into forward prediction provides a dense learning signal for unsupervised representation learning of both objects and their relationships. This, in turn, enables faster policy learning for an object-centric relational RL agent. We demonstrate our agent by introducing a set of challenging object-interaction tasks in the AI2Thor environment where learning with our attentive object-model is key to strong performance. Specifically, by comparing our agent and relational RL agents with alternative auxiliary tasks with a relational RL agent equipped with ground-truth object-information, we find that learning with our object-model best closes the performance gap in terms of both learning speed and maximum success rate. Additionally, we find that incorporating object-relationships into an object-model's forward predictions is key to learning representations that capture object-category and object-state.

Abstract: Demanding cognitive functions like working memory (WM) depend on functional brain networks being able to communicate efficiently while also maintaining some degree of modularity. Evidence suggests that aging can disrupt this balance between integration and modularity. In this study, we examined how cognitive training affects the integration and modularity of functional networks in older and younger adults. 23 younger and 23 older adults participated in 10 days of verbal WM training, leading to performance gains in both age groups. Older adults exhibited lower modularity overall and a greater decrement when switching from rest to task, compared to younger adults. Interestingly, younger but not older adults showed increased task-related modularity with training. Furthermore, whereas training increased efficiency within, and decreased participation of, the default-mode network for younger adults, it enhanced efficiency within a task-specific salience/sensorimotor network for older adults. Finally, training increased segregation of the default-mode from fronto-parietal/salience and visual networks in younger adults, while it diffusely increased between-network connectivity in older adults. Thus, while younger adults increase network segregation with training, suggesting more automated processing, older adults persist in, and potentially amplify, a more integrated and costly global workspace, suggesting different age-related trajectories in functional network reorganization with WM training.

“The Weight of Honor” is the first comprehensive documentary to chronicle the lives of families caring for their
catastrophically wounded returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Over the course of five years, the film follows the arc of what
happens when some of America's best and strongest volunteer to protect our nation, but return home physically and emotionally
broken and disillusioned. What happens when they return is not only a personal journey but also that of their family caregivers who
have no training other than the love for their wounded. Our military does not prepare families for the return of a wounded warrior.
“The Weight of Honor” tells their stories of strength, exhaustion, conflict, and even humor as they chart a course through the

On October 8, 2013 Malala Yousafzai appeared on the Daily Show to talk about her harrowing experience surviving the Taliban’s attempt to assassinate her. At one point during the interview she described how she reacted when she discovered that the Taliban were planning to kill her. “I used to think that the Tali[ban] would come and he would just kill me,” she told to Stewart. “But then I said, if he comes, what would you do Malala? Then I would reply to myself, Malala just take a shoe and hit him…”

Malala’s interview provides a window into the at times curious ways that we reflect on our lives. Although we all have an inner monologue that we engage in from time to time, an inner voice that guides our moment-to-moment reflections, people often report referring to themselves in strikingly different ways when they introspect. Whereas people typically use 1st person singular pronouns (e.g., I, me, my) to refer to themselves during introspection, they at times also use their own name and other non-1st-person pronouns to refer to themselves as well.

In this talk, Professor Ethan Kross will review findings from a growing body of psychological and neuroscience research, which suggests that far from representing a simple quirk of speech, engaging in such distanced self-talk enhances people’s ability to control their thoughts, feelings and behavior under stress.

Abstract: The neural basis of consciousness is one of the most challenging and fundamental questions in science. Evidence from noninvasive functional neuroimaging studies has pointed to two distinct cortical systems that may mediate the ongoing stream of human consciousness, an internally directed system – default mode network (DMN) and an externally directed system – dorsal attention network (DAT). During Dr. Huang’s talk, he will present one of his recently published studies (Huang et al., 2020, Science Advances) entitled “Temporal Circuit of Macroscale Dynamic Brain Activity Supports Human Consciousness”. In this work, he and his colleagues examined how the two systems are regulated in the conscious brain, and how they are disrupted when consciousness is diminished. They developed a concept, the “temporal circuit”, characterized by a set of trajectories along which the dynamic brain activity occurs. The transitions between the DMN and DAT are embedded in the temporal circuit, where a balanced reciprocal accessibility of brain states is characteristic of consciousness. In contrast, an isolation of the DMN and DAT from the temporal circuit underlies unconsciousness of diverse etiologies. These findings provide new mechanistic understanding on the functional role of anti-correlated systems and consciousness. Next, Dr. Huang will discuss some ongoing and extended work on determining which brain region plays a key role in controlling the DMN-DAT transitions and in gating conscious access (i.e., the availability of consciously perceived information to cognitive processors).

ISR Insights Speaker Series is a series focusing on the research happening at ISR.

America's most research intensive universities represent about 3% of higher education institutions, but they conduct 90% of the nation's academic research. Drawing on his recent book, Research Universities and the Public Good: Discovery for an Uncertain Future and the work of ISR's Institute for Research on Innovation & Science (IRIS), which he directs, Jason Owen-Smith will explain how these unique and essential organizations serve as an important form of "social insurance" in the face of an uncertain future. Universities like U of M are uniquely able to address "unknown unknowns," problems and opportunities we do not know we have yet. No other sector or type of organization accomplishes is equipped to serve this purpose in our society. COVID-19 puts special pressures on the academic research mission that come after more than a decade of declining public support. The pandemic and its effects jeopardize the US Academic Research Enterprise (US-ARE) and with it the future health, wealth, and well-being of our nation and the world. Drawing on unique data science resources developed at IRIS, and 20 years of work on the economic and social value of research and innovation, Owen-Smith highlights the challenges and explains how they might be addressed by federal and state policy-makers, the leaders and faculty of institutions like ours.

The University Psychological Clinic is offering a Saturday session of the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) group.

Join the Psych Clinic for an eight-week MBCT group starting on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021. The MBCT group serves as treatment for people with depression as well as other mental health conditions. While the chemical and physical aspects of depression and other mental health disorders are far more complex than just feeling down, current research supports a cognitive approach as a way to change patterns of brain functioning and build resilience in people struggling with chronic depression.

This program uses a combination of cognitive therapy and mindfulness to help participants form new, healthier modes of thought. MBCT initiates a cognitive change that helps clients move past events that have the potential to trigger relapse. Participants learn how to view their thoughts without judgment.

If you are interested in attending or referring a potential group participant, please contact the Psychological Clinic to begin the process. Call (734) 764-3471 to schedule a screening. Alternately, you can contact the clinic through the website form, found here: https://mari.umich.edu/psych-clinic/contact-us.

If you missed the start of this session or are interested in a group at a different time or on a different day, please contact us! We have ongoing groups and can organize new sessions based on demand.

Some people seem to understand the gifts of positivity better than the rest of us. We call those people resilient. They are the ones who smile in the face of adversity, reframe bad events as opportunities, and adopt a wait-and-see attitude about future threats.

This doesn't mean they never feel bad. Yet, because they also find ways to cultivate good feelings - even in the midst of crises - their bad feelings don't last as long. They rebound.

We can all become resilient. Positivity is your birthright. Resilience is not just for the chosen few. It's for the masses. It's ordinary magic. Our Book is "POSITIVITY," by Barbara Fredrickson.

This study group led by Mike Murray will meet Fridays for six weeks beginning February 3. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

Toxic Equilibrium: Structural Racism and Population Health Inequities (February 24, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/81748 81748-20949404@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 24, 2021 10:00am

February 24, 2021
10:00am – 6:30pm
Eastern Time

The American social structure is composed of a resilient, symbiotic network of the formal and informal institutions that operate to maintain an equilibrium toward White privilege. Across time and place, changes in one institution can reverberate through other institutions, and importantly, when we attempt to intervene toward equity in one institution, other institutions can move to restore this toxic equilibrium. Cultural racism, which encompasses the socially accepted ideologies, values, and behavioral norms determined by the dominant power group, sets this equilibrium. Particularly insidious as it operates on the level of our shared social subconscious, the processes that comprise cultural racism are invisible to many because they are our “givens”, our assumptions, our defaults – but the result shapes our answers to the question: Whose life counts?

For our 6th annual University of Michigan RacismLab Symposium on the Study of Racism, we pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. James Jackson, whose mentorship guided our 1st annual symposium in 2015 and resulted in our guest edited Social Science and Medicine special issue on cultural and structural racism. In the introduction to this special issue, we called for all scholarship on race and health to be grounded in interdisciplinary frameworks of cultural and structural racism and critical race theory.

Our annual symposium continues to be sponsored by the University of Michigan Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research. For our virtual meeting in 2021, we partner with the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science (IAPHS) to move our discussions to a national stage. As we move to a national, interdisciplinary discussion, we are honored that a pioneer in the study of structural racism, Dr. Eduardo Bonilla Silva will serve as the keynote speaker this year.

Performance anxiety is a formidable challenge for many people who speak in public, play an instrument, take a test or job interview, play a sort, and engage in social discourse with others. Psychological and physical symptoms often threaten one’s excellent preparation, self-confidence, and self- esteem. Performance anxiety can inhibit both professional and personal goals.

Instructor Julie Jaffee Nagel will lead the study group’s exploration of some underlying causes of performance anxiety that typically have roots in childhood and cast a long shadow in life. We also will discuss, try out, and evaluate various coping strategies to better understand what triggers performance anxiety and how to think about managing it more effectively.

The study group will meet Thursdays from March 4 through March 25. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Title:
Universalization: philosophical origins and cognitive applications

Abstract:
Some people think it is immoral not to vote, but why? Current theories of moral psychology — based largely on outcomes, rules, or affect — have trouble explaining this intuition. After all, one vote typically makes no difference in the overall outcome of an election. Moreover, there is not necessarily a rule or norm that mandates voting. And the thought of not voting isn’t particularly emotionally charged. Rather, I propose that moral judgments in cases like this arise out of the logic of universalization — essentially the process of asking “what if everyone did that?”

The logic of universalization is well-known to moral philosophers, appearing in the theories of Kant, RM Hare, George Singer, TM Scanlon and others. In the Foundations section of this talk, I will introduce the concept of universalization and explore how and why it has been used so effectively in moral philosophy. In the Frontiers section of the talk, I will demonstrate how I have used this philosophical concept as a starting place for a model of moral cognition. I will define a computational model of universalization and show how it predicts subject judgments with quantitative precision. In addition, developmental work suggests that universalization may even be used by children as young as 4. Finally, I will end by showing how universalization may be the key to a unified theory of moral cognition.

About the Series
The Foundations & Frontiers Speaker Series brings leading cognitive scientists to U-M (virtually) to present a special pair of presentations on the same day. The first presentation serves as an introduction to an important theoretical idea or method in the field -- the Foundations. The second presentation concerns the application of that idea or method to an innovative topic, thus exploring the Frontiers of the field in a way that highlights the significance of the theoretical idea.

Abstract: The Group Iterative Multiple Model Estimation (GIMME) framework has emerged as a promising method for characterizing connections between brain regions in functional neuroimaging data. Two of the most appealing features of this framework are its ability to estimate the directionality of connections between network nodes and its ability to determine whether those connections apply to everyone in a sample (group-level) or just to one person (individual-level). However, there are outstanding questions about the validity and stability of these estimates, including: 1) how recovery of connection directionality is affected by features of data sets such as scan length and autoregressive effects, which may be strong in some imaging modalities (resting state fMRI, fNIRS) but weaker in others (task fMRI); and 2) whether inferences about directionality at the group and individual levels are stable across time. This talk will provide an overview of the GIMME framework and describe relevant results from a largescale simulation study that assesses directionality recovery under various conditions and a separate project that investigates the temporal stability of GIMME’s inferences in the Human Connectome Project data set. Analyses from these projects demonstrate that estimates of directionality are most precise when autoregressive and cross-lagged relations in the data are relatively strong, and that inferences about the directionality of group-level connections, specifically, appear to be stable across time. Implications of these findings for the interpretation of directional connectivity estimates in different types of neuroimaging data will be discussed.

Abstract: Over the past decade, many new methods for preprocessing neuroimaging data have been developed. With so many options to choose from, researchers can be bewildered by the different combinations of parameters for steps such as slice-timing correction, coregistration, and normalization. In response to this, standardized preprocessing pipelines such as fMRIPrep have been developed to give researchers an optimized preprocessing pipeline drawing from many different software packages such as AFNI, FSL, and ANTs. The output can then be used with any neuroimaging software for further analysis. In this talk we will review how BIDS, a standardized format for organizing neuroimaging data, enables the use of software such as fMRIPrep, and allows for easier sharing on sites such as OpenNeuro. We will have a practical demonstration of how to organize data into BIDS format, and how to interpret the output from the fMRIPrep pipeline.

The format of this workshop will be a lecture followed by a hands-on tutorial of looking at a typical BIDS subject and the output from fMRIPrep. Those who wish to follow along with the practical part of the seminar should have access to a command line (e.g., the Terminal that comes with a typical Macintosh operating system, or Cygwin on Windows), and an image viewer, such as FSL's fsleyes or AFNI's image viewer.

Stress and Health in Context: The Role of Negative Relationships
Wednesday, April 28, 1pm EDT: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98477632981

A burgeoning literature shows social ties are integral for health and survival. Kira Birditt‘s program of research focuses on negative aspects of relationships including the extent to which they are irritating, critical, or demanding. In this talk she will discuss the findings from her program of research showing that: 1) There is a great deal of variability in negative aspects of relationships within and between individuals, 2) Negative aspects of relationships have important implications for health that often vary by the context of stress, and 3) The implications of relationships and stress vary race/ethnicity. She will also discuss the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations program that she leads and directions for future research.

Kira Birditt earned a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University and B.A. and M.S. degrees in Psychology from Western Washington University. She serves as a Research Associate Professor at the Survey Research Center and the Director of the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations Program. She is currently PI on three R01 projects funded by NIA examining: 1) racial health disparities in stress, social ties and health, 2) racial inequities in health among Alzheimer’s caregivers, and 3) alcohol use and cardiovascular health among aging couples.

This webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.

Beyond the Pandemic: Challenges and Opportunities for Changes in Education
Wednesday, May 12 at 1pm EDT
https://umich.zoom.us/j/96351558688

At the end of the school year in 2020 parents, educators, and researchers, wondered how to deal with the “COVID slide” related to achievement and gains in learning due to schools shifting to virtual learning across the country. What we did not know at the time is that many schools would struggle to open at all in the Fall of 2020 and online and remote learning would continue to be one of the primary ways that children were educated for the rest of the 2020-21 school year. Today, the question remains: What will parents, educators, and researchers need to consider regarding achievement and learning gains as children are likely to return to in-person schooling in Fall 2021? Dr. Pamela Davis-Kean will discuss her research on how homeschooling was discussed on social media, the issues related to “holding back” or repeating a grade in primary school, and how new proposed policies for free community college may be important for helping those in secondary education get extra time to develop skills for entry into a four-year college.

Unearthing Tulsa: 100 Years Later, a conversation with Brent Staples, Fred Conrad, and Scott Ellsworth (May 17, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83757 83757-21493279@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, May 17, 2021 4:00pm
Location: Museum of Art

Maybe you’ve heard of the Tulsa Race Massacre. It was one of the most horrific examples of white supremacist terrorism in the history of the United States and knowledge of the event was actively suppressed for over fifty years. From May 31 to June 1, 1921, the Massacre saw the murder of hundreds of Black residents of the Greenwood neighborhood—a bustling and vibrant community known then as Black Wall Street—and more than one-thousand homes and businesses burned to the ground.

As we approach the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, we invite you to revisit a moment in 1999 when the New York Times Magazine published Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Brent Staples' article "Unearthing a Riot," which was the most significant national media coverage of the event at the time. Portraits of survivors made by renowned photojournalist and U-M alumnus Fred Conrad accompanied this important essay. In this program, Staples and Conrad will be joined by U-M professor, best-selling author, and historian Scott Ellsworth, author of newly published book The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice, who will facilitate a conversation that will expand our understanding of what has been involved in making the history of Tulsa more visible and, by extension, illuminating the ever-present reality of racial terror and the resiliency of Black communities in our country.

Also featuring an introduction by Matthew Countryman, chair of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, and a Q&A facilitated by Jennifer Friess, UMMA associate curator of photography.

This program will be livestreamed on YouTube at 4 p.m. on May 17. No registration required.   Brent Staples, an editorial writer for The New York Times, was awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing. He is the author of the memoir Parallel Time and holds a Phd in Psychology from The University of Chicago.

Fred Conrad is a photographer specializing in photojournalism and portraiture. He holds his BFA in Photography from the University of Michigan and has made photographs for prestigious and far reaching news organizations such as Sygma, Time Magazine, Newsweek, New York Magazine, Rolling Stone, Ms. Magazine and The New York Times.

Born and raised in Tulsa, Scott Ellsworth has been writing about the Tulsa race massacre for forty-five years. His forthcoming book, The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice, will be published on May 18, 2021. Ellsworth teaches in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan.

The Ground Breaking: an American City and its Search for Justice will be available for sale through the UMMA Shop (please call 734-647-0521), Literati Bookstore in Ann Arbor, and Blackstone Bookstore in Ypsilanti. It will also be available through the Ann Arbor District Library.

For more information, visit umma.umich.edu/unearthing-tulsa.

This program is presented by UMMA as part of our ongoing commitment to anti-racist action, and organized in collaboration with the Museum’s longtime partner professor Scott Ellsworth and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies with support from Wallace House, the Penny Stamps School of Art & Design, the Ann Arbor District Library, Blackstone Bookstore, and Literati Bookstore.

Visit Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism for a current exhibition that also takes up untold stories of the historical erasure of Black Americans and explores photography’s role in making visible people and histories that have been actively suppressed.

Prechter-Tam Bipolar Seminar Series: Pluripotent Stem Cell Models to Study Bipolar Disorder (May 20, 2021 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/83971 83971-21619270@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 20, 2021 11:30am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program

"Characterization of stem cell-derived exosomes in bipolar disorder and their impact on recipient cells."

Bipolar disorder is a condition that involves the human brain. There is no easy access to brain tissue from living people.  Using induced pluripotent stem cells offers the first opportunity to model the activity of brain and nerve cells from individuals with bipolar disorder. Samples from skin are ‘induced’ to form pluripotent stem cells that can subsequently be prompted to grow into nerve cells.  Shortly after this technology was developed, the Prechter Bipolar Research Program expanded to include Sue O’Shea, PhD, Professor, in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology who works on pluripotent stem cells.  Individuals with a history of bipolar disorder and non-bipolar controls provided skin samples that were grown into stem cells and then nerve cells.  Over the past decade this work has expanded to include a multisite collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania, the Salk Institute, Sanford Burnham Institute, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals.  Several significant findings have included the consistent characteristic of premature excitability of nerve cells derived from individuals with bipolar disorder, the abnormal behaviors of astrocytes, and the apparent dysfunction of exosomes.  These patterns are leading towards the identification of target pathways that may be suitable for pharmaceutical intervention.
