Understanding Performance Anxiety (March 4, 2021 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79954 79954-20519516@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 4, 2021 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Performance anxiety is a formidable challenge for many people who speak in public, play an instrument, take a test or job interview, play a sort, and engage in social discourse with others. Psychological and physical symptoms often threaten one’s excellent preparation, self-confidence, and self- esteem. Performance anxiety can inhibit both professional and personal goals.

Instructor Julie Jaffee Nagel will lead the study group’s exploration of some underlying causes of performance anxiety that typically have roots in childhood and cast a long shadow in life. We also will discuss, try out, and evaluate various coping strategies to better understand what triggers performance anxiety and how to think about managing it more effectively.

The study group will meet Thursdays from March 4 through March 25. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

3:50 pm - 4:40 pm Frontiers Presentation
4:40 pm - 5:05 pm Q & A

Title:
Universalization: philosophical origins and cognitive applications

Abstract:
Some people think it is immoral not to vote, but why? Current theories of moral psychology — based largely on outcomes, rules, or affect — have trouble explaining this intuition. After all, one vote typically makes no difference in the overall outcome of an election. Moreover, there is not necessarily a rule or norm that mandates voting. And the thought of not voting isn’t particularly emotionally charged. Rather, I propose that moral judgments in cases like this arise out of the logic of universalization — essentially the process of asking “what if everyone did that?”

The logic of universalization is well-known to moral philosophers, appearing in the theories of Kant, RM Hare, George Singer, TM Scanlon and others. In the Foundations section of this talk, I will introduce the concept of universalization and explore how and why it has been used so effectively in moral philosophy. In the Frontiers section of the talk, I will demonstrate how I have used this philosophical concept as a starting place for a model of moral cognition. I will define a computational model of universalization and show how it predicts subject judgments with quantitative precision. In addition, developmental work suggests that universalization may even be used by children as young as 4. Finally, I will end by showing how universalization may be the key to a unified theory of moral cognition.

About the Series
The Foundations & Frontiers Speaker Series brings leading cognitive scientists to U-M (virtually) to present a special pair of presentations on the same day. The first presentation serves as an introduction to an important theoretical idea or method in the field -- the Foundations. The second presentation concerns the application of that idea or method to an innovative topic, thus exploring the Frontiers of the field in a way that highlights the significance of the theoretical idea.

Abstract: The Group Iterative Multiple Model Estimation (GIMME) framework has emerged as a promising method for characterizing connections between brain regions in functional neuroimaging data. Two of the most appealing features of this framework are its ability to estimate the directionality of connections between network nodes and its ability to determine whether those connections apply to everyone in a sample (group-level) or just to one person (individual-level). However, there are outstanding questions about the validity and stability of these estimates, including: 1) how recovery of connection directionality is affected by features of data sets such as scan length and autoregressive effects, which may be strong in some imaging modalities (resting state fMRI, fNIRS) but weaker in others (task fMRI); and 2) whether inferences about directionality at the group and individual levels are stable across time. This talk will provide an overview of the GIMME framework and describe relevant results from a largescale simulation study that assesses directionality recovery under various conditions and a separate project that investigates the temporal stability of GIMME’s inferences in the Human Connectome Project data set. Analyses from these projects demonstrate that estimates of directionality are most precise when autoregressive and cross-lagged relations in the data are relatively strong, and that inferences about the directionality of group-level connections, specifically, appear to be stable across time. Implications of these findings for the interpretation of directional connectivity estimates in different types of neuroimaging data will be discussed.

Abstract: Over the past decade, many new methods for preprocessing neuroimaging data have been developed. With so many options to choose from, researchers can be bewildered by the different combinations of parameters for steps such as slice-timing correction, coregistration, and normalization. In response to this, standardized preprocessing pipelines such as fMRIPrep have been developed to give researchers an optimized preprocessing pipeline drawing from many different software packages such as AFNI, FSL, and ANTs. The output can then be used with any neuroimaging software for further analysis. In this talk we will review how BIDS, a standardized format for organizing neuroimaging data, enables the use of software such as fMRIPrep, and allows for easier sharing on sites such as OpenNeuro. We will have a practical demonstration of how to organize data into BIDS format, and how to interpret the output from the fMRIPrep pipeline.

The format of this workshop will be a lecture followed by a hands-on tutorial of looking at a typical BIDS subject and the output from fMRIPrep. Those who wish to follow along with the practical part of the seminar should have access to a command line (e.g., the Terminal that comes with a typical Macintosh operating system, or Cygwin on Windows), and an image viewer, such as FSL's fsleyes or AFNI's image viewer.

Stress and Health in Context: The Role of Negative Relationships
Wednesday, April 28, 1pm EDT: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98477632981

A burgeoning literature shows social ties are integral for health and survival. Kira Birditt‘s program of research focuses on negative aspects of relationships including the extent to which they are irritating, critical, or demanding. In this talk she will discuss the findings from her program of research showing that: 1) There is a great deal of variability in negative aspects of relationships within and between individuals, 2) Negative aspects of relationships have important implications for health that often vary by the context of stress, and 3) The implications of relationships and stress vary race/ethnicity. She will also discuss the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations program that she leads and directions for future research.

Kira Birditt earned a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University and B.A. and M.S. degrees in Psychology from Western Washington University. She serves as a Research Associate Professor at the Survey Research Center and the Director of the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations Program. She is currently PI on three R01 projects funded by NIA examining: 1) racial health disparities in stress, social ties and health, 2) racial inequities in health among Alzheimer’s caregivers, and 3) alcohol use and cardiovascular health among aging couples.

This webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.

Beyond the Pandemic: Challenges and Opportunities for Changes in Education
Wednesday, May 12 at 1pm EDT
https://umich.zoom.us/j/96351558688

At the end of the school year in 2020 parents, educators, and researchers, wondered how to deal with the “COVID slide” related to achievement and gains in learning due to schools shifting to virtual learning across the country. What we did not know at the time is that many schools would struggle to open at all in the Fall of 2020 and online and remote learning would continue to be one of the primary ways that children were educated for the rest of the 2020-21 school year. Today, the question remains: What will parents, educators, and researchers need to consider regarding achievement and learning gains as children are likely to return to in-person schooling in Fall 2021? Dr. Pamela Davis-Kean will discuss her research on how homeschooling was discussed on social media, the issues related to “holding back” or repeating a grade in primary school, and how new proposed policies for free community college may be important for helping those in secondary education get extra time to develop skills for entry into a four-year college.

Unearthing Tulsa: 100 Years Later, a conversation with Brent Staples, Fred Conrad, and Scott Ellsworth (May 17, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83757 83757-21493279@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, May 17, 2021 4:00pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

ouTube.

Maybe you’ve heard of the Tulsa Race Massacre. It was one of the most horrific examples of white supremacist terrorism in the history of the United States and knowledge of the event was actively suppressed for over fifty years. From May 31 to June 1, 1921, the Massacre saw the murder of hundreds of Black residents of the Greenwood neighborhood—a bustling and vibrant community known then as Black Wall Street—and more than one-thousand homes and businesses burned to the ground.

As we approach the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, we invite you to revisit a moment in 1999 when the New York Times Magazine published Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Brent Staples' article "Unearthing a Riot," which was the most significant national media coverage of the event at the time. Portraits of survivors made by renowned photojournalist and U-M alumnus Fred Conrad accompanied this important essay. In this program, Staples and Conrad will be joined by U-M professor, best-selling author, and historian Scott Ellsworth, author of newly published book The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice, who will facilitate a conversation that will expand our understanding of what has been involved in making the history of Tulsa more visible and, by extension, illuminating the ever-present reality of racial terror and the resiliency of Black communities in our country.

Also featuring an introduction by Matthew Countryman, chair of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, and a Q&A facilitated by Jennifer Friess, UMMA associate curator of photography.

This program will be livestreamed on YouTube at 4 p.m. on May 17. No registration required.   Brent Staples, an editorial writer for The New York Times, was awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing. He is the author of the memoir Parallel Time and holds a Phd in Psychology from The University of Chicago.

Fred Conrad is a photographer specializing in photojournalism and portraiture. He holds his BFA in Photography from the University of Michigan and has made photographs for prestigious and far reaching news organizations such as Sygma, Time Magazine, Newsweek, New York Magazine, Rolling Stone, Ms. Magazine and The New York Times.

Born and raised in Tulsa, Scott Ellsworth has been writing about the Tulsa race massacre for forty-five years. His forthcoming book, The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice, will be published on May 18, 2021. Ellsworth teaches in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan.

The Ground Breaking: an American City and its Search for Justice will be available for sale through the UMMA Shop (please call 734-647-0521), Literati Bookstore in Ann Arbor, and Blackstone Bookstore in Ypsilanti. It will also be available through the Ann Arbor District Library.

For more information, visit umma.umich.edu/unearthing-tulsa.

This program is presented by UMMA as part of our ongoing commitment to anti-racist action, and organized in collaboration with the Museum’s longtime partner professor Scott Ellsworth and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies with support from Wallace House, the Penny Stamps School of Art & Design, the Ann Arbor District Library, Blackstone Bookstore, and Literati Bookstore.

Visit Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism for a current exhibition that also takes up untold stories of the historical erasure of Black Americans and explores photography’s role in making visible people and histories that have been actively suppressed.

Prechter-Tam Bipolar Seminar Series: Pluripotent Stem Cell Models to Study Bipolar Disorder (May 20, 2021 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/83971 83971-21619270@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 20, 2021 11:30am

"Characterization of stem cell-derived exosomes in bipolar disorder and their impact on recipient cells."

Bipolar disorder is a condition that involves the human brain. There is no easy access to brain tissue from living people.  Using induced pluripotent stem cells offers the first opportunity to model the activity of brain and nerve cells from individuals with bipolar disorder. Samples from skin are ‘induced’ to form pluripotent stem cells that can subsequently be prompted to grow into nerve cells.  Shortly after this technology was developed, the Prechter Bipolar Research Program expanded to include Sue O’Shea, PhD, Professor, in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology who works on pluripotent stem cells.  Individuals with a history of bipolar disorder and non-bipolar controls provided skin samples that were grown into stem cells and then nerve cells.  Over the past decade this work has expanded to include a multisite collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania, the Salk Institute, Sanford Burnham Institute, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals.  Several significant findings have included the consistent characteristic of premature excitability of nerve cells derived from individuals with bipolar disorder, the abnormal behaviors of astrocytes, and the apparent dysfunction of exosomes.  These patterns are leading towards the identification of target pathways that may be suitable for pharmaceutical intervention.

This presentation examines how cultural invalidations and racial code-switching are associated with ethnic-racial identity development, mental health, and occupational outcomes among people of color. Cultural invalidations are identity threats that challenge the authenticity of a person’s membership within their racial group, and racial code-switching is the process of modifying one's behavior to adhere to the norms of specific racial groups in different contexts. Implications regarding the psychological costs and benefits of cultural invalidations and racial code-switching will be discussed.

There are, I shall argue, three important areas of philosophical exploration about work.

The first is a question in social ontology: What is work? This question is both historical and conceptual, as questions in social ontology usually are. And the contemporary idea of work and of a job—and the related idea of a good job--are the results of conceptual and institutional developments over the last few centuries.

The second is an ethical issue, in Aristotle’s broad sense of ethics as concerned with eudaimonia: How does work fit into the good life? This problem is especially challenging because the idea of a good job involves many dimensions of assessment: Does it produce something useful? Does it make a positive contribution? Does it give the worker a decent income? Was that income fairly decided? Are the conditions of work satisfactory? Are they just? Does the job have the rewards of sociability? Is the work a source of significance for the worker?

Looked at more generally, the good job does four things: (a) it provides goods and services worth having, while also (b) providing people with income, (c) sociability, and (d) significance. And one of the things that makes the ethical questions especially challenging at the moment, is that new technologies are reconfiguring employment in ways that appear to threaten the creation of jobs that do all four of these things well and do them through one job.

Human flourishing requires all of these things: products, services, incomes, sociability, significance. For many people over the twentieth-century providing a good job played a huge role in delivering all of them. But AI and robotics may produce a world in which products and services could increasingly be produced without providing employment for most people: and that means either that we must find a way of providing everyone with the resources for a dignified human life without sharing the social product through the labor market, or we must invent income-generating activities that we don’t need for the products or services they provide. We might want to do the latter because many of us would not know how to fill our lives with significance or find social groups outside the family with which to engage unless we were involved in some organized productive activity.

These are issues on which many popular writers on the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” and on globalization have, of course, written for some time. But we need more serious organized reflection on the normative issues raised by these challenges.

And that leads to the third cluster of concerns: How should law and other sources of normative authority be configured to allow work to contribute to the flourishing of workers, and how should the opportunities and rewards of work be shared? Like Aristotle, I think we need to get the ethics right to do the politics, but I also think that, precisely because we are, as he insisted social animals, it is hard to pry them apart.

In this lecture I shall focus on the central set of ethical questions but say some things in passing about the social ontology of work at the start and the politics of employment at the end.

In this presentation, I will focus on racial identity-context congruence, that is, the extent that racially minoritized students' constructions around the importance and meaning of their race can be aligned or misaligned with their experienced academic environments. I will share studies linking students' identity-based experiences (interpersonal and climate experiences in academic and social contexts) that are stigmatizing or affirming to outcomes related to their academic identities, achievement, and persistence. This work also highlights how many racially minoritized and underrepresented students draw on their racial and cultural identities in ways that promote their motivation and persistence, especially in settings where they are underrepresented and experience marginalization based on their multiple social identities (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, among other identities). I will discuss implications for scholarly approaches to studying positive development among racially minoritized students; as well as the need to shift away from institutional approaches focused only on supporting minoritized students in navigating non-congruous environments (individual student resilience) toward approaches focused on creating/recreating settings that affirm and align with minoritized students' identities and that leverage students' identity strengths to support them as whole persons (institutional resilience).

Just as being a graduate student is very different from being an undergraduate so are the ways in which you figure out which programs are the best fit for you, and successfully apply for them. This session will be especially relevant to juniors and seniors in the process of researching and applying to graduate school: How to find the right programs, how to structure your personal statement and get strong recommendation letters, do you have to take the GRE – and what if you don’t score as well as you’d like? However, we’ll also talk about what you should be doing to prepare as early as your sophomore or even freshman year. We’ll have both a short presentation and a panel of graduate students, including those who have recently served on admissions committees.

Researchers have used social dominance, system justification, authoritarianism, and social identity theories, to understand intergroup phenomena ranging from racial categorization to political movements. The result has been a growing understanding of how particular sociopolitical motives and contexts impact intergroup relations, without a unifying perspective to integrate these insights. Using research on multiracial categorization as a case study, I review evidence supporting each theory’s predictions concerning how monoracial perceivers categorize multiracial people that combine their ingroup with an outgroup, with attention to the moderating role of perceiver group status. I find most studies in the multiracial categorization literature cannot arbitrate between theories of intergroup relations and reveal additional gaps in the literature. To advance this research area, I introduce the Sociopolitical Motive x Intergroup Threat (SMIT) Model of Intergroup Relations that 1) clarifies which sociopolitical motives interact with which intergroup threats to predict categorization and 2) highlights the role of perceiver group status. Moreover, I consider how the SMIT model can help understand phenomena beyond multiracial categorization.

“Flourish” by Martin E.P. Seligman - A must read for those wanting to understand how we thrive.

"The book is full of nuggets about why positive approaches work."
"An interesting and hope-inducing read with real-world application."

Seligman's approach is to take psychology from its traditional role in alleviating misery and broaden it into a solid research-based guidebook to wellbeing -- teaching us how to be wiser, stronger, more generous to others, more self-disciplined, and more capable of dealing with difficulty and rejection. Seligman asks, what is it that enables you to cultivate your talents, to build deep, lasting relationships with others, to feel pleasure, and to contribute meaningfully to the world? In a word, what is it that allows you to flourish?

This study group will meet on Wednesdays for six weeks beginning on September 29. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

Germine Awad's scholarship is characterized by three interrelated areas of inquiry: prejudice and discrimination, identity and acculturation, and more recently, body image among women of color. She has also written in the area of multicultural research methodology. The majority of her research is guided by the questions “What factors lead to discrimination against ethnic minorities?” and “What impacts perceptions of experienced discrimination?” The two populations that she has primarily focused on are Arab/Middle Eastern Americans and African Americans. Although overt discrimination towards ethnic minorities has decreased over the years, the practice of more covert, subtle forms of prejudice remains. The events of September 11, 2001, however, reintroduced more explicit forms of prejudice towards Arab/Middle Eastern Americans, and those perceived to be Muslim, complicating the dialogue on discrimination in the United States. Awad is concerned with how prejudicial attitudes and ideology impact attitudes towards ethnic minorities generally and within specific domains such as the workplace and higher education. In addition, she examines how racial/ethnic identity and acculturation impact ethnic minorities’ perception of discrimination. Most recently, she has expanded her identity and acculturation research to the study of body image concerns among women of color.

Poverty exposes children to multiple environmental inequities that increase the risk of impaired physical health, lower educational attainment, mental health problems, delinquency, and worse outcomes as adults. Adverse outcomes are stronger when poverty occurs in early childhood or persists throughout a large portion of childhood. Experiments that test the effects of policies and programs that increase cash income and “near cash” benefits (e.g.,nutrition assistance) suggest that income poverty itself causes negative child outcomes, and that differences between the outcomes of poor and nonpoor children do not stem exclusively from the cluster of other disadvantages associated with poverty that may be harmful to children (e.g., low levels of parental education). There are numerous pathways through which poverty can influence children's development. In this lecture, I will emphasize research that adopts a “family stress” perspective, which posits that poverty can adversely affect children’s socioemotional development partly by increasing psychological distress and depressive symptoms in parents and in turn, undermining the quality of parenting. Neighborhood characteristics and interpersonal factors can contribute to, amplify, and mitigate links in this pathway. Extensive research suggests that alleviation of poverty can foster children’s development by increasing the goods and services that parents can buy for their children and by promoting a more responsive, less stressful environment in which more positive parent-child interactions can occur.

Are students still engaged? How Georgetown University approached student survey design and analysis during the initial phase of the pandemic.

Most colleges and universities administer multiple surveys to students, faculty, and staff throughout the academic year. Institutions have dedicated survey plans that call for the collection of information about the student experience, faculty satisfaction, cultural climate, and alumni outcomes/perceptions (among other topics).

The shift to remote instruction in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic meant that institutions had to act swiftly to rethink survey plans and other data collection methods. New types of data were also needed by leadership to quickly understand the impact of the shift and how students, faculty, and staff were faring in this unprecedented time.

This presentation will explore the variety of approaches that Georgetown University took in surveying students and faculty during the pandemic. First, the development of “pulse” surveys to measure academic engagement will be discussed, followed by a step-by-step account of how the survey data were communicated and used. Challenges in terms of sampling, questionnaire construction, survey nonresponse, and ethical use of data will be highlighted. Finally, we will discuss how these new approaches and lessons learned are helping to drive innovation in future survey efforts at the University.

Jonathan Morrow, M.D., Ph.D. received his B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of Southern California, and his M.D. and Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Michigan. Dr. Morrow stayed on at Michigan to complete his residency training in Adult Psychiatry, and subsequently became certified in Addiction Medicine. He is currently an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, and he provides medication management and other clinical care to patients through the University of Michigan Addiction Treatment Services. Dr. Morrow's primary research interest is in delineating the basic neurobiology that underlies motivated behavior, and determining how variation in that neurobiology can lead to psychopathology.

The aim of this talk will be to provide an overview of the neurobiology of addiction, with an emphasis on the interplay between conscious decision-making and subconscious or “automatic” desires. Individual variation in this neurobiology will also be discussed, especially with regard to its influence on susceptibility to addiction. Finally, the scientific findings outlined in this talk will be used to raise questions about morality, personal responsibility, and societal responses to addiction and other behavioral disorders.

Our relational ethnography of a resource-constrained entrepreneurial ecosystem with changing racial demographics expands the study of systemic racism that emerges in and through organizations. Drawing on Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality (CRT/I) frameworks, we critically interrogate the relational configuration between entrepreneurial support organizations (ESOs) and Black women entrepreneurs in Detroit, MI to understand how practices, or everyday activities that constitute organizational life, reinforce racial, gender, and class hierarchies. We implemented a site-based, relational ontology to analyze our qualitative interviews (n = 65) and field observations, which deepened the meaning and enactment of systemic racism in this particular ‘site’. Our data revealed ESOs use of discursive, embodied, and material practices to inform the types and extent of support offered to entrepreneurs in Detroit. Assemblages of these practices maintained or disrupted systemic racism through three key mechanisms: control over resources, relational patterns between residents, and the entrenched power dynamics in the city. Accordingly, we build theoretical knowledge of practices that may inadvertently reproduce racial inequality through adopting critical perspectives of organizations. We provide recommendations for organizations and other social institutions seeking to dismantle systemic racism based on the insights that emerged in our data. ABSTRACT: The recent US political landscape brings many puzzling questions. For example, the two major parties have become increasingly polarized since the 1960s, while most voters maintained moderate policy positions. What can lead to the disconnect between the parties and the voters? Also, a sizable proportion, often the majority, of the voting population is uninformed about facts relevant to their voting decisions, such as policies proposed by the candidates. Can such a voting body deliver good collective decisions? In this talk, I give an overview of research projects that address these complex issues, which leverage dynamical-system models, empirical findings in psychology, and data analysis. This approach takes into account the impact of multiple, complex, and often non-linear factors, and aims to give a coherent understanding of complex social phenomena.

Abstract:

My research is dedicated to neuro-performance: how to increase motor and cognitive capabilities and new strategies to restore them after injury. In my lab we ask if there are ways to capitalize on non-invasive brain stimulation technologies and genetically-based neuromodulation to achieve motor and cognitive functions faster, or perhaps even get to a level that exceeds traditional training approaches. We are working with rodents and large animal models of peripheral nerve injury and traumatic brain injury. We are using multidimensional measurements including behavioral tests, gait and motion testing, electrophysiology, wearable sensors, and neuroimaging to gain a holistic understanding on neuro-performance. We are also studying neural circuits associated with octopus arm movement with the goal of developing new octopus-inspired prosthetics.

Compositionality---the principle that the meaning of a complex expression is built from the meanings of its constituent parts---is considered a central property of human language. The key benefit of compositionality is compositional generalization, which enables the production and comprehension of novel expressions analyzed as new compositions of familiar parts. In this presentation, I discuss my work on developing a test for compositional generalization for artificial neural networks based on human generalization patterns discussed in existing linguistic and developmental studies, and applying this test to several instantiations of Transformer (Vaswani et al. 2017) and Long Short-Term Memory (Hochreiter & Schmidhuber 1997)) models to better characterize their learning biases.

Getting involved in research is a great way to build your skills and get the “behind the scenes” look into the science that you later learn about in your textbooks and classes. If you’re thinking of going to graduate or medical school, ideally you want to be starting in a lab by your sophomore year and in most cases no later than your junior year. But how do you find and apply for a position? And what do you do if there’s a pandemic and no positions are available? We’ll go over tips for both these situations.

In recent years, many organizations have adopted the notion that employees should “bring their whole selves to work,” or be authentic in the workplace. Research supports the benefits of authenticity at work (Cha et al., 2019). The conversation often assumes that everyone has equal opportunity to express themselves authentically. Yet, given the discrimination experienced by some employees, such Black women, authentic behavior may not be attainable, even for those in leadership positions. Drawing from research on power and intersectionality, we examined the factors that influence authenticity for Black women leaders in organizations. Findings from qualitative interviews reveal factors that inhibit and facilitate the willingness to be authentic at work, as well as the different manifestations and consequences of authentic behavior for Black women leaders at work. I discuss the theoretical and practical insights that emerge from this work.

He has over 250 publications, notably on methods for the analysis of data with missing values and model-based survey inference, and the application of statistics to diverse scientific areas, including medicine, demography, economics, psychiatry, aging and the environment. Little is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine. In 2005, Little was awarded the American Statistical Association’s Wilks Medal for research contributions, and he gave the President’s Invited Address at the Joint Statistical Meetings. He was the COPSS Fisher Lecturer at the 2012 Joint Statistics Meetings.

On the Definition of Response Propensity

Nonresponse propensities play a central role in unit nonresponse adjustments from both design and model-based perspectives, but are often not clearly defined because of lack of clarity about the variables on which the propensities are conditioned. I propose a definition of response propensity for the purpose of nonresponse adjustments, where the conditioning is restricted to include the variables measured in the survey as well as design and auxiliary variables measured for respondents and nonrespondents. The proposed definition is justified from both design-based and model-based perspectives. The role of the missing at random assumption is discussed for both perspectives, for cross-sectional surveys and longitudinal surveys with attrition.

Detecting white supremacist speech on social media
Wednesday, November 3, 1pm ET

Social media have been repeatedly shown to harbor white supremacist networks, enabling far-right extremists to find one another, recruit and radicalize new members, and normalize their hate. In order to address the problem of white supremacist speech on social media, platforms must first be able to identify it.

In this talk, Libby Hemphill will present research to understand what white supremacist speech looks like, especially how it’s different from general or commonplace speech, and to determine whether white supremacists try to adapt to avoid detection from social media platforms’ current content moderation systems.

ISR Insights Speaker Series is a series focusing on the research happening at ISR.

The first round of attempts to diversify the academy, what we call Diversity 1.0, largely entailed attempting to remediate underrepresented students, through program support and other efforts, so that they could thrive within the academy. By and large, these efforts did not consider the biases embedded within institutions of higher education and the institutional changes that need to happen in order for minoritized students to feel they belong and can thrive within these institutional spaces. That deeper, institutional work is what we call Diversity 2.0 -- the process of evaluating and addressing the structural factors that make departments and campuses feel unwelcoming and unsupportive to minoritized students. To address this challenge, we suggest a holistic approach, one that includes a focus on admissions, belonging, climate, and data equity, as the best approach for creating the institutional transformations needed to make departments and campuses truly inclusive.

Are you the same person you think you are? Are you the same "person" everyone else thinks you are? Like to try a few, very short personality "quizzes". (Ok, this is really just for FUN! It's absolutely no real attempt to analyze you. And, you don't have to divulge the outcomes!)

Over an hour or so, we'll do 4 or 5 exercises such as the Sherwin Williams Color Preference, the short-form Enneagram and even an old Meyers-Briggs initial quiz. I’ll come up with a couple of others ... just for fun! We’ll poll the class to see the range of personas indicated. Who knows?

Abstract:

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H MRS) is a well-established technique for quantifying the brain biochemistry in vivo. In most studies, however, the ¹H MRS is acquired during rest with little to no constraint on behavior. Measured metabolite levels, therefore, reflect steady-state concentrations whose associations with behavior and cognition are unclear and limited. With recent advances in MR technology, ¹H MRS is now experiencing a resurgence with growing and compelling evidence of task-related changes in brain glutamate at temporal resolution similar to fMRI. More importantly, these changes are consistent with altered metabolic steady-states that reflect the neural output driven by shifts in the local excitatory and inhibitory (E/I) balance on local circuits. Unlike blood oxygen level differences-base fMRI, this form of in vivo MRS, also known as functional MRS (¹H fMRS), yields a more direct measure of behaviorally relevant neural activity and is considerably less sensitive to vascular changes. ¹H fMRS enables noninvasive investigations of task-related glutamate changes that are relevant to normal and impaired cognitive performance, and psychiatric disorders.

This presentation will: 1) introduce ¹H fMRS and its conceptual framework in assessing the neural output driven by shifts in the E/I balance on local circuits; 2) provide evidence that ¹H fMRS is a sensitive tool for detecting task-related changes in the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate in functionally relevant brain areas; and 3) provide evidence on how ¹H fMRS can advance the understanding of neural dysfunctions related to the inability to shift the E/I equilibrium through mechanisms of impaired synaptic plasticity in aging and psychiatric disorders.

I want to discuss what it is like to live with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder if you suffering from it or how you can help someone going through it. I hope that others can be given a glimmer of hope and the ability to understand why someone living with this does the things that they do. I will discuss the things that have help me the most and the struggles I have had. I am willing to open up the darkest part of my life so that hopefully someone can avoid some of what I have lived with.

Organizations are continuing to direct efforts to recruit women and underrepresented minority members (URM; Black/African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, or Hispanic/Latinx) to increase workforce diversity. Yet, the underrepresentation of women and URM members persists across many industries and organizations, rendering the need to strengthen the body of research that looks to find ways organizations can increase recruitment and selection of minority employees. My colleagues and I address this need by focusing on diversity recruitment within an academic setting, a context where hiring and promoting women and URM members continues to be a challenge. In the first two studies, we utilized and extend homophily theory to explain how and why the demographic composition of the recruitment team can contribute to attracting more women and URM candidates. In the third study, we examined how and why diversity recruitment strategies can have negative effects for URM applicants

The overall time commitment is ~3 hours/week, and it is super rewarding. All students interested are encouraged to apply regardless of whether or not they have attended a WSN group. Applications are open to both undergraduate students and graduate students who will be enrolled at U-M in the winter.

The application can be found at bit.ly/W22-Leader-Application or on our website at umichwsn.org/leader-application. If you have any questions regarding the application process or the position itself, please contact the Director of Leader Development, Courtney Jones (courtj@umich.edu).

The University of Michigan offers a unique opportunity for undergraduates to help local “at risk” grade school students by acting as mentors. This program has been very successful. Young students experience personal gains in self-confidence, persistence, self-knowledge, support and friendship. The University of Michigan students gain valuable experiences that help them better understand theories of motivation, child development, and learning. In many cases the relationship goes beyond teaching to shaping an individual’s perspective or outlook on life.

Students interested in enrolling in Michigan Mentorship (Psych 304) must attend an info session. For more information please visit the website (https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/michigan-mentorship-program/)

The University College London (UCL) Centre for Engineering Education is a joint venture between Faculty of Engineering Sciences and the Institute of Education (IoE). Through research and active engagement, it aims to encourage the study of engineering and allied subjects and drive curriculum innovations to help create the next generation of engineering graduates needed to address complex global challenges. The Centre for Engineering Education is heavily involved in the running and dissemination of UCL Engineering's Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP) – one of the four case studies described in the MIT report “Reimagining and rethinking engineering education” – a pedagogical framework by which undergraduate students study using innovative and interdisciplinary approaches. In this session, I will focus on CEE’s research with IEP students and recent graduates to understand their experiences in the programme. Findings suggest gender differences in the awareness of the societal impact of engineering, and that communication skills are essential to engineering practice. Finally, I will highlight contributions for future longitudinal research on engineering student learning and career pathways in the UK.

The past year has been by marked the convergence of public health, racial justice, economic and democratic crises. To meet the moment, leaders have sought to heighten aspirations toward racial representation, equity and inclusion across industries. Bold proclamations in support of Black lives, and ambitious platforms to invest in Black livelihoods, have been backed by billions of dollars and coalitions of hundreds of leaders across sectors. As institutions begin to implement these diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, what will they establish as standards for success and indicators of progress? How will organizational leaders and their stakeholders assess whether the racial climate has transformed to reflect greater diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice? During this seminar, I will introduce a framework for pursuing Freedom at Work, grounded in the juxtaposition between the democratic ideals of liberty and justice, and the sociohistorical oppression of enslaved, African-descended Americans and other minoritized racial groups. I invite scholars and practitioners to analyze relative access to various freedoms at work (i.e., expression, actualization, deviation, transformation, reformation), consider how inequity undermines these freedoms, and examine how freedom fighters from racially diverse and occupationally diverse backgrounds can help leaders to embody the aspirations and ideals they hold for diversity, inclusion, equity and justice. This discussion will also explore means for placing guardrails on practices that undermine rather than uphold the liberties of communities that were long-denied access to educational opportunity, career mobility and economic advancement. In this vein, I take up the question of how personal leadership commitments and accountability practices might catalyze change, sustain momentum and advance the equal exercise of freedom at work for members of minoritized racial/ethnic identity groups.

Abstract:

Optical and magnetic resonance based imaging methods are uncovering information about brain function and dysfunction with an unprecedented level of detail. Transgenic rodent models have enabled the dissection of neuronal cell-type contributions to vascular responses and hemodynamic imaging in the mammalian brain. These studies motivate the use of high-resolution fMRI for estimating excitatory and inhibitory activity from hemodynamic responses as well as monitoring brain dysfunction in an array of brain diseases. Altogether, these findings continue to support a bright future for fMRI and hemodynamic imaging methods for basic and clinical research studies.

Black Women in Sports Leadership: Navigating Workplace Blackness (December 10, 2021 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/89570 89570-21664219@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, December 10, 2021 1:30pm

Identity is a critical attribute of effective leadership. Moreover, interactions in the workplace (be they formal or informal) shape employees’ identities, as they reveal the extent to which identities are accepted or contested (Sanchez-Hucles & Davis, 2010). Sport organizational cultures, aptly characterized as inequality regimes (Acker, 2006) established at the axes of race and gender (and other ascriptions), create habitus (Bourdieu, 1984) of inclusion and exclusion that uniquely impact the identity and the leadership opportunities and experiences of Black women employed therein. The climate of many sport organizational cultures often discourages Black women from ‘bringing’ their authentic Blackness into the workplace, requiring them to engage in a number social-psychological strategies to insulate and protect the essence of their ‘self’ at work. This presentation is an excerpt of a larger project on Black women in sport leadership (Simpkins & Armstrong, In Progress). It will discuss race as aesthetic labor (Williams & Connell, 2010), and it will illustrate the manner in which Black women sport leaders navigate their Blackness in the workplace as: (a) personal agency, and (b) embodied racial identity. It will conclude by discussing the need for inclusive organizational cultures and workplaces free of anti-Black racism where Black women may thrive in the fullness of their Blackness as leaders.

When do Multinational Corporations Concede to Nationalistic Activism: A Natural Experiment (January 14, 2022 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/90174 90174-21668508@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 14, 2022 1:30pm

We extend the corporate political-mediation model, which is developed in a domestic context and attributes corporate concessions to social movement activists to contextual pressures, to the international market in order to explain concessions made by multinational corporations (MNC) to nationalist activists in their host countries. We argue that in the international market, the pressures that firms face include not only declines in performance but also those that arise from a more complex set of stakeholders. Whereas in a domestic context, all of a corporation’s stakeholders are embedded within the same cultural, political, and social environment and are therefore more likely to have a shared understanding of what is good, right, and desirable in society, in the international context of MNCs, stakeholders are located in countries with different national values and sometimes even opposing beliefs. Nationalism can be perceived as undermining the right of a nation’s individual members and minority groups. Thus, a firm is less likely to concede to a host country’s nationalism if it faces pressure from stakeholders located in countries that value equality, individualism, democracy, and diversity. We find support for our theory in a natural experiment on Fortune Global 500 firms that were targeted by Chinese nationalists for violating the “One China” protocol in regional indications.

Abstract:

The selection of information from our cluttered sensory environments is one of the most fundamental cognitive operations performed by the primate brain. In the visual domain, the selection process is thought to be mediated by a static spatial mechanism – a ‘spotlight’ that can be flexibly shifted around the visual scene. This spatial search mechanism has been associated with a large-scale network that consists of multiple nodes distributed across all major cortical lobes and also includes subcortical regions. To identify the specific functions of each network node and their functional interactions is a major goal for the field of cognitive neuroscience. In my lecture, I will give an overview on the neural basis of this fundamental cognitive function and discuss recently discovered rhythmic properties that set up alternating attention states.

Research on topics of organizational science in health care settings for a variety of reasons has proliferated in recent years across both organization- and health-focused disciplines. Yet, questions abound about what we as organizational scholars know, what we have learned, and whether the research we are conducting is relevant. The first goal of this session is to take stock of this important domain by drawing together findings from two recent works: a critical history and analysis of the patient safety movement and an analysis of almost 700 articles published over the past decade in leading organizational science (OS) and health care (HC) journals. A second goal is to provide insight into promising avenues that could ultimately advance organizational science and health care with future research that is both rigorous and relevant.

Over the years, the tech industry has made many promises to organizational customers -- for example, that its products would improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase scale. More recently, the promises have extended to such things as improving teamwork and decision-making. While these promises have been realized in some contexts, they remain largely unmet in others. Is there a way to distinguish between realism and hype in computing? Technology's "Law of Amplification" is a simple idea that captures digital technology's impact. This talk will reveal how it explains a broad range of past and existing organizational phenomena, and how it suggests predictions for the future.

Brian M. Wells and Hani Zainulbhai - Using a Web Diary Survey to Measure Out-of-Home Media Consumption and Engagement (February 9, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/90980 90980-21675125@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 9, 2022 12:00pm

Organized By: Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science

Brian M. Wells is a Senior Data Scientist at Nielsen where he works on a variety of quantitative projects to evaluate, improve, and expand Nielsen panels. Previously he served as the Data Quality and Survey Methodology Manager for the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) where he evaluated the need for and implemented a new data collection methodology. Brian received his PhD in Survey Methodology from the University of Michigan.

Hani Zainulbhai is a Senior Data Scientist at Nielsen and a 2018 MPSM graduate. At Nielsen, she has been involved in developing alternative recruitment methods for the TV audience measurement panel.

Using a Web Diary Survey to Measure Out-of-Home Media Consumption and Engagement

Dimensions of out-of-home (OOH) media measurement rely on human input and cannot be fully captured through passive data collection via smart devices or portable meters. To better understand OOH TV consumption, we designed a web-based diary survey to capture the various components of OOH TV consumption while trying to minimize recall bias, especially for brief, unanticipated viewings. The study consisted of two parts: a Recruitment phase and a Diary phase. During the Recruitment phase, selected panelists from a nationally representative sample completed a short survey and were asked to participate in the 7-day diary. Those who agreed were enrolled in the Diary and were asked to complete a once-daily diary, logging all their OOH activity and TV consumption. The surveys were conducted over four weeks from mid-October to mid-November 2021, with each week having an independent and representative sample covering a different 7-day period. This presentation will provide an overview of the methodology and process used to administer the Recruitment and Diary surveys, including sample design, recruitment procedures, web-based diary survey design, and participation and response rates for each survey. In addition, we will discuss the results of a questionnaire experiment exploring differences between the concepts of attention to and engagement with media. A random half-sample was assigned questions about either “attention” or “engagement” to each program viewed. Within each half-sample, we also randomly assigned each respondent to an ascending or a descending response order condition to observe if there is any primacy effect due to collection in a self-administered mode. Preliminary results show differences in the distributions for attention and engagement implying some differentiation in how respondents perceive these two measures. In addition, the direction of the response order seems to alter the response distribution for attention but not for engagement.

Exposure to Violence and Subsequent Weapons Use in Two Urban High-Risk Communities
Thursday, Feb. 10, noon ET via Zoom

Speakers: Eric F. Dubow (Adjunct Research Scientist, Research Center for Group Dynamics; Professor of Psychology, Bowling Green State University) and L. R. Huesmann (Amos N Tversky Collegiate Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies and Psychology, Professor Emeritus of Communication and Media, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, College of LSA and Research Professor Emeritus, Research Center for Group Dynamics, Institute for Social Research)

Researchers Dubow and Huesmann report preliminary results of data that they have collected over the last 13 years from youth and young adults in two diverse, urban, high-crime communities (Flint, MI, and Jersey City, NJ). Their findings have shown that early exposure to weapons violence (whether in the family, neighborhood, or through engaging with violent media) significantly correlates at modest levels with weapon carrying, weapon use or threats-to-use, arrests for weapons use, and criminally violent acts 10 years later. Violence exposure was significantly linked to beliefs about the acceptability of behaving aggressively. They argue that youth who observe more violence with weapons, whether in the family, among peers, in the neighborhood, or through the media or video games become infected from the exposure with a social-cognitive-emotional disease (evidenced particularly by normative beliefs approving of gun violence) that increases their own risk of behaving violently with weapons later in life.

Sensing Water in Mexico City
Branko Kerkez and Elizabeth F.S. Roberts, University of Michigan

Monday, Feb. 14, The Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm.
Zoom only

Abstract:
A growing number of the world’s urban households only receive water intermittently. In this paper we describe our multi-disciplinary project, bringing together engineers and ethnographers, that seeks to sense the effects of intermittency in working class neighborhoods in Mexico City. We installed newly engineered water sensors in participant households, allowing us to apprehend previously unseen dynamics, for example that weekly versus daily intermittency has substantial effects on water quality. Through ethnographic data from these same households we found that in regards to the constant labor of managing water, daily versus weekly intermittency also has complex and counterintuitive effects on domestic life. Our ethnographic/engineering collaboration allows us to document complex water phenomena, that we could not have seen on our own, and by sensing how these complex water dynamics produce different household water ways we have more of a sense of what the future might hold.

This is a part of the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD) Winter 2022 Series - "Water Ways: New Social Science, Science Studies, and Environmental Approaches to Water"

This is also a part of the class Anthrcul 558 section 002

Networking is an essential 'soft skill' both in and out of academia. However, many people find it mysterious, intimidating and maybe even a little icky. Come talk with current and former undergraduate and graduate students (most but not all from UM), all of whom got their start in psychology and/or neuroscience, who have been successful in networking in academia, outside of it, or a little bit of both. Some have leveraged their networks to help build their scientific careers, some to help make institutional changes in their departments and/or companies, to get positions in or out of academia, or in one case, to start a $150k business in swing dancing while also doing a cog neuro postdoc. Get their insights on how they got started, strategies that did and didn't work for them, and more! Everyone is welcome, regardless of your career stage and type. We'd love to get some of your questions ahead of time to give them a chance to think about helpful resources - please complete the form here! https://forms.gle/jicgTemtCSNa8fNx5

People are increasingly using data and evidence from scientific studies to inform decisions, both in industry and in their personal lives. However, evidence-based reasoning presents many challenges, such as misinterpreting data, focusing on irrelevant data, and accepting evidence that conflicts with prior beliefs. In this talk, I will discuss how using theories from cognitive science can inform learning interventions to improve scientific and statistical literacy so that people can evaluate evidence more critically and objectively.

Things Are Not What They Seem: The Origins & Evolution of Intragroup Conflict (February 18, 2022 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/91806 91806-21690201@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 18, 2022 1:30pm

Teams scholars have historically conceptualized and measured intragroup conflict at the team level. But emerging evidence suggests that perceptions of intragroup conflict are often not uniform, shared, or static. These findings suggest important questions about the microfoundations of intragroup conflict: Where does conflict within teams originate? And how does it evolve over time? We address these and other questions in three abductive studies. We consider four origination points—an individual, dyad, subgroup, or team—and three evolutionary trajectories—conflict continuity, contagion, and concentration. Study 1, a qualitative study of narrative accounts, and Study 2, a longitudinal social networks study of student teams, reveal that fewer than 30 percent of teams experience team-level conflict. Instead, conflict more commonly originates and persists at individual, dyadic, or subgroup levels. Study 2 further demonstrates that traditional psychometric intragroup conflict scales mask the existence of these various origins and trajectories of conflict. Study 3, a field study of manufacturing teams, reveals that individual and dyadic task conflict origins positively predict team performance, whereas traditional intragroup task conflict measures negatively predict team performance. The results raise serious concerns about current methods and theory in the team conflict literature and suggest that researchers must go beyond team-level conceptualizations of conflict.

TEDxUofM is a university-wide initiative to galvanize the community for an event like no other; filled with inspiration, discovery, and excitement. Borrowing the template from the world-renowned TED conference, TEDxUofM aims to bring a TED-like experience to the University of Michigan. Our vision is to showcase the most fascinating thinkers and doers, the “leaders and best” in Michigan terms, for a stimulating day of presentations, discussions, entertainment, and art that will spark new ideas and opportunities across all disciplines. Our conference will feature 8 speakers, 3 performing groups, and interactive labs/activities for attendees!

Our theme for this year’s conference is SHATTERPROOF. Through a time of fragmentation and dissonance, individuals and communities have showcased an incredible ability to withstand adversity. Resilience is found in all of us despite the size of the challenge. We use our voices to empower each other. We use ideas to drive us forward. We refuse to crack under pressure. We are shatterproof. As we set the stage with this spirit, our goal is for attendees to discover what being shatterproof means to them.

Abstract:

Network neuroscience is built atop a network model in which cells, populations, and regions are linked to one another via anatomical or functional connections. Historically, this model has been approached from a node-centric perspective, emphasizing features of neural elements: the number of connections they make, their centrality, module affiliation, etc. However, brain networks can also be examined from an edge-centric perspective that explicitly focuses on properties of connections: their material and metabolic costs, the generative processes that govern connection formation and their dynamics across time. In this talk, I will present results from several recent papers and highlight findings and advantages of edge-centric network perspectives compared with traditional node-centric network representations.

ISR Insights Speaker Series
The Trouble with Passion: How Searching for Fulfillment at Work Fosters Inequality
Thursday, February 24 at 12pm ET via Zoom

Speaker: Erin Cech, Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Michigan; Faculty Associate, Population Studies Center

“Follow your passion” is a popular mantra for career decision-making in the United States. In this talk, Cech will discuss her research on this ubiquitous cultural narrative that she call the “passion principle.” The passion principle is rooted in tensions between postindustrial capitalism and cultural norms of self-expression and is compelling to college-educated career aspirants and workers because passion is presumed to motivate the hard work required for success while providing opportunities for meaning and self-expression. Although passion-seeking seems like a promising option for individuals hoping to avoid drudgery in their labor force participation, she argues that the passion principle has a dark side: it reinforces socio-economic disadvantages and occupational segregation among career aspirants and workers in the aggregate and helps reproduce an exploited, overworked white-collar labor force. These findings have implications for cultural notions of “good work” popular in higher education and the US workforce and raises broader questions about what it means when becoming a dedicated labor force participant feels like an act of self-fulfillment.
