Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research

This webinar will review the current state of informal or family caregiving in the United States, describe the research on factors that impact caregiver stress, and discuss various policy solutions at the local, state and national level.According to the AARP, over 43 million adults currently provide unpaid care to family members or friends in the United States, with an estimated economic value of approximately $470 billion in 2017. Almost 40% of all caregivers find their caregiving situation to be emotionally stressful. When caregivers feel they had no choice in assuming their caregiving responsibilities, this percentage increases to 53%. Recent trends that shift care from institutional to home-based settings and the isolating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic are creating an even greater sense of urgency to find ways to better support caregivers.

The content of this webinar has been developed under a grant from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR #90RTHF0001). NIDILRR is a Center within the Administration for Community Living (ACL), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The contents of this webinar do not necessarily represent the policy of NIDILRR, ACL, or HHS and you should not assume endorsement by the Federal Government.

Secretary of State Madeleine Albright stated in 1998 that one of her “most important jobs is to call attention to the dangers that still confront us and to the direct connection that exists between the success or failure of our foreign policy and the day-to-day lives of the American people.” In my talk, I will explore the presence and impact of race relations on U.S. foreign policy and U.S. actions at home. I will speak to these issues through the lens of the diplomatic profession, including through the unique challenges and experiences I faced as a Black woman, and first U.S. ambassador to the world’s newest independent nation, the Republic of South Sudan, serving under the first Bi-racial American President of the U.S.

Moderator: Monica Hakimi, Associate Dean for Faculty and Research and James V. Campbell Professor of Law, University of Michigan Law School

What’s in a number? In the case of the U.S. Social Security number, the now-familiar nine digits hold a fascinating story about modern citizenship, governance and data. Starting in 1936, the SSN was affixed to more and more American lives, spurring new uses of punch cards and filing systems as well as novel dilemmas about personal data. This talk gives a brief history of the SSN and what it reveals about the changing state of “our” information.

Speaker: Sarah Igo, acclaimed author and historian

Tools for Futurist Thinking in the Social Sector with Deloitte’s Monitor Institute (February 3, 2021 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81412 81412-20893776@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 3, 2021 3:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Business+Impact at Michigan Ross

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an environment of hyper-uncertainty for social sector organizations, as the economic crisis has weakened funders and nonprofits even as the demand for their assistance is skyrocketing. Many funders and non-profits have completed their initial round of emergency response to the crisis, but they are struggling to contemplate what they should do next.
To help social sector leaders confront this challenge, the Monitor Institute by Deloitte is using the tools of scenario planning—the well-tested methodology for thinking about the future pioneered by Deloitte’s Global Business Network group—to help both funders and operating nonprofits get on their front foot in preparing for the landscape on the other side of the COVID-19 crisis. While it isn’t possible to predict the future, this session will provide funders and operating non-profits with an understanding of the tools that can help them think about the critical uncertainties of the moment, reckon with the new “certainties” emerging from the pandemic, and think about how their strategies might (or might not) fit the different possible futures that may emerge in the coming months and years ahead.

If you've ever wondered why people in poverty can't seem to break out of its grip, sometimes even for generations, then this class is for you.

Together we will explore the dynamics of poverty-looking at what keeps people in it, what's needed to break out of it, and how we can all play a role in building community to end poverty.

Class includes hands-on simulations, thoughtful discussion, and personal stories of struggle and transformation. The final class focuses on solutions and will feature dynamic programs making a real difference right here in Washtenaw County.

Suzanne Van Dam leads this group that meets Wednesday for four weeks beginning on February 10. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

U.S. Representatives Elissa Slotkin and Peter Meijer: Voices across the aisle in a challenging time (February 16, 2021 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/81922 81922-20990902@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 16, 2021 11:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy

Join the Ford School for a Conversations Across Differences event with U.S. Representatives Elissa Slotkin (D-MI 8th District) and Peter Meijer (R-MI 3rd District) moderated by Ford School Dean Michael S. Barr. The 117th congressional session has started with an insurrection, an impeachment trial, a disciplinary action in the House, and a push for major legislation that is passing along mostly partisan lines. Can Democrats and Republicans lower the temperature and find common ground to tackle the urgent problems facing the United States? We look forward to a thoughtful dialogue with two of the most dynamic members of Congress.

Cosponsored by the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation.

Lisa D. Cook on diversity and innovation (February 18, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/80170 80170-20572617@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 18, 2021 4:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy

Join us for a discussion between Lisa D. Cook and Betsey Stevenson on economics, development, diversity, and innovation. Professor Cook's research on innovation and diversity has shown that while both women and underrepresented minorities have earned an increasing share of bachelor’s degrees and advanced degrees in fields most associated with invention, patent activity for these groups has not increased. What does this disparity reveal about our economy and how can we close the gap? What policies might be put in place to help encourage innovation among underrepresented groups?
