Exhibition Reception - Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt (May 31, 2018 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/52090 52090-12418629@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 31, 2018 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA, ‘69 and MA, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society, Washtenaw Council for the Arts, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.

For the first time in the last three decades, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including, oil, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper, aluminum foil, and tissue to balsa wood, toothpicks and other found objects. She creates mixed media paintings, cut outs, rubbings and installations that reimagine the agency of mundane objects and invite viewers to look again.

Exhibition Dates: Thursday, May 31 - Sunday, September 9, 2018
Exhibition Reception: Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 6-8 pm
A conversation with Ellen Wilt: June 9, 2018 from 2-3 pm

African-Canadian artist Esmaa Mohamoud will discuss her work and current exhibition "The Draft" with U-M Institute for the Humanities curator Amanda Krugliak, followed by a reception.

Esmaa Mohamoud investigates the intangibility of Blackness through issues surrounding Black representation and Black body politics in contemporary spaces. The Draft explores material and popular Black culture through the realm of athletics. With the use textiles and concrete, The Draft address the ways in which Black bodies navigate spaces as both visible, and at times invisible.

Esmaa Mohamoud (Canadian, b. 1992), is a Toronto-based African-Canadian artist. She holds a BFA from Western University (2014) and an MFA from OCAD University (2016). Recently, Mohamoud has exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts Montreal. She is represented by Georgia Scherman Projects.

Exhibition Reception: Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire (September 21, 2018 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53583 53583-13412200@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 21, 2018 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Celebrate the work of artists and designers featured in Have We Met?. Live DJ, refreshments and performance titled Activating the Prussian Blue (Ping Pong/Parlor) Table, Buster Simpson, 2018.

Have We Met: Dialogues on Memory and Desire draws inspiration from Ann Arbor’s legacy of social movements (Anti-War Movement, Civil Rights Movements) and experimental art practices (The Once Group) from the late-1950s to the 1970s as its point of departure. It brings together archival materials and reproductions from the University of Michigan’s Labadie Collection and the Bentley Library in conjunction with radical artworks by diverse, multi-generational artists and designers whose works are deeply influenced by the ideas of freedom and self-determination; re-writing the canonical accounts of history; and building contemporary culture and solidarity through collective action.

At a time when the idea of citizenship in the United States is being deeply challenged and redefined through horrific occurrences of gun violence and police brutality towards racialized and queer civilians and refugees, this exhibition asks what role art institutions can play in building inclusive and vibrant creative spaces the 21st Century. Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire retraces and learns from models of collectivity and organizing mobilized by artists, designers, and cultural producers in the past and present as a lens to understand the contemporary moment and re-imagine the future.  It explores the complex relationships and at times overlapping and contested concerns between contemporary art, design, and social justice that continually influence and inform one another.

Artists: Rudolf Baranik, Stephanie Dinkins, Emory Douglas, Brendan Fernandes, Chitra Ganesh, Carole Harris, Maren Hassinger, Al Loving, Josh MacPhee, Native Art Department International, Michele Oka Doner, Yoko Ono, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Martha Rosler, Buster Simpson, Gregory Sholette, Leni Sinclair, Stephanie Syjuco, Graem Whyte, and Zafos Xagoraris.

Curated by Srimoyee Mitra.

South African photographer Gideon Mendel will discuss his work and current installation, "Deluge," with U-M Institute for the Humanities curator Amanda Krugliak, followed by a reception.

About the installation:

Five Channel Video Installation
13 Minutes, 27 Seconds.

Deluge is a culmination of Mendel’s ten years of work on the Drowning World project, shooting video and stills in thirteen different countries. It depicts a variety of individual stories, positioned with a synchronous global narrative in a way that is both personally intimate and deeply political. In all his years of responding to floods and making many journeys he has shot a vast archive of video footage, which is fully activated in this presentation for the first time.

About Gideon Mendel and his Drowning World project:
Gideon Mendel came of age as a photographer in South Africa in the 1980’s and identified strongly as a ‘struggle photographer’. This marked him and his subsequent career has been notable for his engagement with three of the crucial political and social issues that have faced his generation. These are the struggle against apartheid, HIV/AIDS in Africa and Climate Change.

A leading contemporary photographer, Gideon Mendel's intimate style of image making and long-term commitment to projects has earned him international recognition and many awards. He was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Prize 2015 and recently has won both the inaugural Jackson Pollock Prize for Creativity and the Greenpeace Photo Award 2016.

His on-going project ‘Drowning World, explores the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries. By highlighting the personal impact of flooding he evokes our vulnerability to global warming questioning our sense of stability in the world.

The work began in 2007, when Mendel photographed floods in the UK and in India within weeks of each other. He was deeply struck by the contrasting impact of these events, and the shared experiences of those affected.

Since then he has endeavoured to travel to flood zones around the world visiting Haiti (2008), Pakistan (2010), Australia (2011), Thailand (2011), Nigeria (2012), Germany (2013), The Philippines (2013), The UK (2014), India (2014), Brazil (2015), Bangladesh (2015), the USA (2015 and 2017) and France (2016 and 2018).

As the work progressed photographing floods became both a literal and allegorical means of documenting the tension between the personal and the global effects of climate change. Each location added has intensified the narrative impact of the endeavour.

Drowning World now consists of four parallel and connected narrative elements: Submerged Portraits, Flood Lines, Watermarks, and Deluge.

John Megahan is the senior scientific illustrator at the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan since 1996. He holds a Master in Biology and eventually discovered the profession of biological illustration. He committed to freelance biological illustration for several years before joining the Museum of Zoology. While John enjoys the challenge of doing illustrations for others, he finds that as he matures, expressing his own artistic vision is becoming important to him. He is now looking forward to creating art that reflects his own interpretations of nature, life and the environment.

This exhibit gives a peek at the kinds of topics he hopes to pursue. He painted species that are threatened, endangered or have disappeared from Michigan and also of the flying squirrel, species that is being carefully watched by biologists as its distribution is changing and they are not sure why. He invites the viewer to see the show and find out about some interesting theories.

Going, Going, Gone runs from November through January.

Please join students from the Interarts Performance program’s LIVE ART SURVEY course for a final experimental evening of live art: Saturday, December 8th, 7pm at Ypsilanti Experimental Space (YES).

Live Art Survey (INTERPERF 150) examines the history of performance art and experimental theater through a series of case studies and hands-on experiments. Students act as scholars, researchers, audience members, collaborators, and generative artists. By the end of the course we refine our ability to critically examine and articulate the work of other artists, while learning to take new risks and make informed decisions with our own work. The course concludes with a final public performance event at the Ypsilanti Experimental Space (YES). Taught by Emilia White, with support from the Stamps Inclusive Teaching Grant.

In the workshop, youth explore African-American, Native, and Appalachian textile traditions, creatively use these “heritage algorithms” to make their virtual designs on the screen, and physically render their creations as quilt blocks using an appliqué technique.

This exhibition is supported by the National Science Foundation.

Opening Reception: Wednesday, March 27, 5:30-7:30 pm, Shapiro Undergraduate Library (First Floor Lobby)A multi-venue exhibition of site-specific installations, performances, interventions, and events by University of Michigan faculty, staff, and students, Bookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library is curated by Guna Nadarajan, dean of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, in partnership with the University of Michigan Library. The exhibition will be located in several locations within Shapiro Undergraduate Library, Hatcher Graduate Library, and the Art, Architecture & Engineering Library.

The continued proliferation of digital formats and systems for the embodiment, distribution, and delivery of knowledge increasingly displace the book as form. As a result, the spacial limitations of libraries are challenged. The value of the book and the function of the library demand cultural attention. In this moment, we ask ourselves: what is the future of the library? What is the future of the book? This exhibition seeks to instigate and showcase creative responses to the challenges to the book and the library in the forms we have inherited as well as to project ways of reimagining futures for/of books and libraries.

Bookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library is supported by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, the University of Michigan Library, the University of Michigan Office for Research (UMOR), and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.
