Two of the Saturday afternoon workshops will be led by U-M EEB professors Alison Davis Rabosky with grad student Pascal Title (Automated Species Range Map Construction through Aggregated Global Museum Records) and Dan Rabosky with postdoctoral fellow Jonathan Mitchell (Computational Macroevolution: Analysis and Visualization of Complex Evolutionary Dynamics on Phylogenies).

The rapid mobilization of digitized biodiversity data, led largely in the United States by the National Science Foundation’s Advancing Digitization of Biodiversity Collections program, has resulted in a substantial increase in available data for research and related activities. This conference will encompass the uses of digitized data across all biodiversity disciplines, with special emphasis on digitized specimen data and the potential for “big data” analytics in organismal biology. This conference will provide an important opportunity to explore digital data tools, techniques, discoveries, and outcomes across the biodiversity sciences.

Oral presentations and posters will emphasize the use of digital data for biodiversity research, inclusive of the neontological and paleontological domains. Emphases might include:

* published or publishable biodiversity research that depends on digital datasets

* systematics and the use of digital data

* ongoing research projects that derive from and use digital datasets

* gaps and deficiencies in currently available digital data that hinder effective use,

* user critiques of digital data aggregators and providers

* integrated digitization/data use/research pipelines

* standards and practices for depositing and documenting open access digital datasets

* the role and relevance of “Big Data” in biodiversity research

* use of digitized biodiversity data within the ecological sciences

* the relative importance of digital data derived from specimens vs. observations

* managing digital biodiversity data in support of research pipelines

* analyzing and visualizing biodiversity digital data

The planning team for the conference includes: Chris Dick, Dan Fisher, Rich Rabeler, Alison Davis Rabosky, Dan Rabosky, Adam Rountrey, Cody Thompson, and Priscilla Tucker from the University of Michigan, and Gil Nelson, Larry Page, Pam Soltis, and Alex Thompson from iDigBio.

To build our photo collection, we are holding a photo contest this summer, and you are invited to participate.

Any UM student in any school, college, or degree program can submit photos and win prizes—this includes anyone who graduated during the 2016-17 academic year.

In addition to the prizes you can win for your submissions, winning photos will be displayed in the main SPH lobby this summer and fall. And your submissions might also become part of Michigan Public Health's new branding.

Learn more and submit photos online at sph.umich.edu/photocontest

Mediating the Modern: Sound/Image/Text
2017 Graduate Student Conference
Germanic Languages & Literatures at the University of Michigan
September 29-30
Keynote Speaker: Sean Franzel (University of Missouri)
Presented in Conjunction with the Annual Grilk Lecture: Celia Applegate (Vanderbilt)

During the 1980s German media theorist Friedrich Kittler published a series of highly influential books and essays outlining a materialist approach to literary and cultural history, one freed from hermeneutic fantasies of immediacy and focused instead on the medial conditions that made thought possible in the first place, the hardware that enabled it to be recorded, processed, and transmitted. Over the last few decades, scholars in German, Film, Music, and Literary Studies, and beyond, have continued to expand on Kittler’s initial insights into the material nature of sound, image, and text, and the medial operations they entail. Both borrowing from and looking beyond Kittler, this conference seeks to explore productive points of contact between contemporary media theory, on the one hand, and the literary and cultural histories of mediation, remediation, and intermediation, on the other.

From Herder’s origins of language and Kant’s public sphere to Nazi propaganda and Siegert’s Kulturtechniken , media and mediation have remained central concepts for understanding German modernities. Social and political transformations, in conjunction with technological innovations around 1800/1900/2000 exerted pressure on existing notions of sound, image, and text and vice versa: this feedback loop serves as the springboard for our conference, “Mediating the Modern: Sound/Image/Text.”

Sean Franzel of the University of Missouri will give the conference keynote address on Friday afternoon, September 29. Preceding the conference, participants will also have the opportunity to attend the annual Werner Grilk Lecture in German Studies, given by Celia Applegate, on Thursday evening, September 28. Professor Applegate will conduct a workshop for University of Michigan graduate students and conference participants on Friday morning.

We invite graduate students working in all fields of German studies and related disciplines in the humanities and social sciences to submit proposals for papers. Possible topics include:
- The technicity and/or historicity of listening, seeing, and reading - The times and spaces of sound/image/text
- Medial inscription and identity (race, religion, gender, sexuality) - Aesthetic boundaries and boundary-crossings of music and sound - Mediumship and the occult
- Literature as media technology
- Romantic techniques of reading and writing
- The Gesamtkunstwerk
- War, violence, and media
- Intermediality and remediation of literature in the age of electronic technology - Technology and mass culture
- Economies of media labor, production, and consumption
- Sound/image/text and screen cultures
- Medial Eigensinn and aesthetic form
- Avant-garde conceptualizations of sound/image/text
- Media as practice, process, and event
- Digital and computer-based media

Please send abstracts (300 words max.) to mediatingthemodern@gmail.com by July 1. Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes.

Do not hesitate to contact us at mediatingthemodern@gmail.com for further information.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: BioArtography

BioArtography will be in Booth #102 on East University (near intersection of E. University/Willard) at Ann Arbor’s South University Art Fair!

Every day at the University of Michigan, scientists from many fields work together to study organism development, function and disease. While the goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world around us, many are also taking the time to share the beauty of their work with others through a program called BioArtography. In the course of research, scientists use special stains to add color to the otherwise transparent tissues. Microscopes then allow detailed observation of the tiny, colorful biological structures from inside our bodies revealed in these images. This results in a fascinating combination of art and science that U-M researchers are capturing in pictures taken through microscopes and turning into artworks that would look beautiful on any wall.

Founded in 2005 by Deborah Gumucio, Ph.D., and Sue O’Shea, Ph.D., professors in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, BioArtography has developed into a thriving program. Gumucio, who leads the project, says the effort to turn science into art helps bring the microscopic world to life for the general public — and shows that researchers aren’t just about data and facts.

Past BioArtography sales have raised enough money to send more than 80 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to scientific conferences, where they can present their work to other scientists and make connections that can help them launch their careers in research and industry.

Throughout the year BioArtography images (a collection of over 200) and note cards can be viewed and ordered online at www.bioartography.com. Proceeds from the sale of this work help support the training of our next generation of researchers.

Join us for a morning of presentations and conversations on current research projects happening throughout the University Library. As those invested in the production and preservation of knowledge, we work with a variety of research methods, including investigation, evaluation, experimentation, and careful study. Often, these projects take us beyond the day-to-day aspects of our jobs, encouraging us to solve unique problems and discover new possibilities.

Emergent Research events are aimed at better understanding the various types of research undertaken across campus, particularly as they relate to library services and support, opportunities for collaboration, data management and preservation, and beyond.

Accountable care organizations (ACOs) are a new form of health care organization in which a network of health care providers is given a financial incentive to reduce total costs of care while meeting certain quality benchmarks for a defined patient group. What are the moral responsibilities of such organizations, if any? How might ACOs and those who work in them care for patients in an accountable, trustworthy way?

Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: William L. Clements Library

Join Mary Pedley, Clements Adjunct Map Curator, as she discusses the current exhibit, Mapping in the Enlightenment. After the lecture there will be time to view the exhibit at the Clements. Guests will have an opportunity to see one of only seven known copies of Cassini's Planisphere Terrestre (circular world map).

This exhibit aims to show the connections between the Enlightenment's search for answers to scientific questions, innovative mapping practices, and the interest and participation of the general public in the discussion and debate that these topics and maps elicited.
