Professor Mika LaVaque-Manty will describe recent trends and some of the exciting developments in higher education in general and at public research universities in particular.

U-M is among the leaders of academic innovations that combine the university’s 200-year commitment on accessible, public, and democratic education with new pedagogical and technological approaches. Instead of four intense years for late teens and young adults, the “college experience” of the future may begin as early as middle school and involve periods of residential activity in classrooms and labs and continue throughout the rest of one's life.

Originally from Finland, our keynote speaker for this Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (age 50+) Kickoff Event, Dr. LaVaque-Manty received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern California and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Michigan. He is currently the Director of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the University of Michigan as well as a Professor of Political Science since 2001.

This event is free and open to the public of all ages.

A Knight Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan, Ms. Hosea was a BBC
correspondent for twelve years, one of the most trusted news organizations in the world with a worldwide audience of forty million people. Ms. Hosea spent almost three years based in the Middle East. She covered the Arab Spring from day one in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and the uprisings in Libya and Yemen. Ms. Hosea also covered the war in Gaza and the massacre of Muslim Brotherhood supporters. She mentions she respects her colleagues and the work they do, but even the BBC is not immune to political pressures. In the U.S., Ms. Hosea is making a film on access to clean water and environmental justice. As part of her film, she was at the Standing Rock Camp, where media workers faced felony charges for covering events. Ms. Hosea is also working in Flint and the Navajo Nation, where people’s water was contaminated.

This presentation will provide insights based on her experience as a BBC correspondent on how certain subjects were covered, or not covered, and why.

This is the first in OLLI’S distinguished lecture series for 2017-18. A variety of topics will be covered. There is one lecture each month, for a total of ten. The next lecture will be on October 10, 2017. The subject is Redistricting in Michigan and Other States: Should Politics Choose the Voters?

Dr. Kaplowitz received a BA in English and Latin American Studies from the
University of Michigan and an MA and Ph.D. in Latin American Studies from Johns
Hopkins University. Her research interests have focused on U.S. policy towards Cuba, the U.S. embargo of Cuba, and the Cuban foreign policy. She has published widely and her book credits include: The Cuba Reader: The Making of a Revolution, The Anatomy of a Failed Embargo: U.S. Sanctions Against Cuba, and Cuba’s Ties to a Changing World.

Dr. Kaplowitz will share her personal experiences visiting Cuba over the past 33 years. From the vantage point of a young university graduate spending a summer with ordinary Cubans in the height of the Cold War to meeting Fidel Castro, she has had extraordinary access and insight into Cuban life, policy, and change. She will combine history, memoir, and commentary from her most recent trip to the island to share her thoughts on what’s next for our closest neighbor.

This is the first in a six-lecture series. The subject is Cuba: Our Neighbor in Transition. The next lecture series starts November 2, 2017. The subject is Populism: The Common People in Modern Politics.

This group meets weekly from September to June. There are no specific assignments. Each writer finds his/her own subject and voice. We read our work aloud and discuss it, making constructive suggestions for improvement. The important thing is to write well enough to interest others and convey our ideas clearly. Some people work on extended manuscripts, while others write shorter pieces. Participants may plan to publish their work, just share it with family and friends, or keep it strictly private.

Instructor Eleanor Linn, a published author, will lead this study group for those 50 and above for two hours on Thursdays from September 14, 2017 through June 14, 2018 (except Thanksgiving and December 28, 2017).

Serious scientists from a range of fields have been uncovering evidence that our thoughts, emotions and beliefs can ease pain, heal wounds, fend off infection and heart disease, and even slow the progression of AIDS and some cancers. Drawing on the very latest research, Jo Marchant explores the vast potential of the mind’s ability to heal, lays out its limitations and explains how we can make use of the findings in our own lives.

“...Cure points the way towards a system of medicine that treats us not simply as bodies but as human beings.” Amazon Review.
Let’s bring our open minds and our healthy skepticism to this book discussion for those 50 and above on the possible future of medicine.

The central core of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ novel, The General in his Labyrinth (1989, translated by Edith Grossman) focuses on Simon Bolivar’s last and final trip. Masterly weaving history and fiction, the author focuses his attention on the final months of life of a sick and defeated man, one who has been rejected by the nations he has liberated. Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s writing in this novel is inextricably tied to a geographic and historic reality. He not only describes the Colombian and Venezuelan battles for independence, he provides a prolific description of the navigation through the Rio Magdalena and the small fluvial towns where the General stops on his way.

Current mass media provides us with the picture of political adversaries living in alternate universes with different views of reality. From social media to cable TV, we find ourselves in information silos of our own construction, getting news and views from like-minded sources. This can make it hard for us to grapple with the complexities of the political world we live in today.

This study group is for those 50 and over and will meet for 90 minutes on Tuesdays from September 26 through November 7 (except for October 10). Participants will bring their values and beliefs to facilitate their understanding of alternative political realities and share each other’s critical insights, to help them become more informed citizen.

We will also explore the historic evolution of Hinduism, its spread through Southeast Asia, its place in the contemporary political-social-economic environment in India and the global environment and its interaction with other faiths and belief systems.

We’ve mastered the world, but two cognitive psychologists (S. Sloman and P. Fernbach) in this new book say we are increasingly ignorant as individuals and depend heavily
on collective information plus each other to solve problems. They argue that human inventions come less from individual ingenuity and much more from language-related abilities to learn from and work with others.

The book combines scientific evidence with dozens of intriguing examples of shared human creations, such as money, but has no complete solution for how to avoid manipulation and cope with today’s information explosion.

One of the major themes of American history is race. The tensions of recent years, the presence in government of believers in white supremacy, and the general
ignorance of past conditions of slavery and vicious prejudice against black people make clear there is much to be learned if we are to live in an equitable and just

This study group will read and discuss Yuval Noah Harari’s New York Times bestseller, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind. Sapiens describes human history starting from the Big Bang to the present. The history is divided into the Cognitive Revolution, the Agricultural Revolution, the Unification of Humankind, and the Scientific Revolution.

Harari boldly relates the total scientific evidence, including alternative possibilities. Sapiens integrates history and science to challenge everything we thought we knew about being human: our thoughts, our actions, our heritage . . . and our future.

Please read Part One for the first class.

Instructor Marlin Ristenbatt, a retired engineer and science enthusiast, will lead this study group for those 50 and above for two hours each Tuesday from October 4 through November 5.

Dr. Behar was born in Havana, Cuba and grew up in New York City. She is the Victor Haim Perera Collegiate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan and the recipient of a MacArthur Fellows “Genius” Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship. A storyteller, poet, educator, and public speaker, Ruth frequently visits and writes about her native Cuba and is the author of An Island Called Home: Returning to Jewish Cuba andTraveling Heavy: A Memoir in between Journeys. Her debut novel for young readers, Lucky Broken Girl, is the story of a Cuban-Jewish immigrant girl.

In recent years, the Jews of Cuba have become a source of fascination to numerous travelers who have gone to the island. Why is this community at once so exotic and so endearing to outsiders? As a member of the Jewish Cuban diaspora herself and a longtime scholar of and writer about the community, Dr. Behar will speak about the history and current situation of the Jews of Cuba. She will discuss the role played by the various Jewish diasporas to the island, the perspective held by Jewish Cubans toward the Cuban Revolution in 1959, and the role of the Jewish community in Cuba today. She will end with a reflection on the process of writing a novel for young readers from the perspective of a Jewish-Cuban girl.

This is the third in a six-lecture series. The subject is Cuba: Our Neighbor in Transition. The next lecture in this series will be October 12, 2017. The title is The Folkloric Music of Cuba-Clave is the Key!

Dr. Jansen is a comparative-historical sociologist of politics and culture. He is the
author of Revolutionizing Repertoires: The Rise of Populist Mobilization in Peru (University of Chicago Press) and has published various articles on Latin American politics in academic journals. After receiving his Ph.D. in sociology from UCLA, he spent three years as a junior fellow in the Michigan Society of Fellows. He is currently an assistant professor at the University of Michigan.

Recent political events in the U.S. and Europe have brought renewed
attention to the problem of populism. But what exactly are we talking about when we talk about populism? And what do we know about its social and political causes and consequences? This lecture provides some provisional answers to these difficult questions by considering various moments in the political history of Latin America—a region that has long been susceptible to populist mobilization and claims-making.

This is the fourth in a six-lecture series. The subject is Populism: The Common People in Modern Politics. The next lecture series will start January 11, 2018. The title is Architecture: Shaping Buildings; Shaping Us.

So much controversy has been in the news about voter fraud, election rigging, and ballot tampering that it makes us wonder why we should bother to vote. For almost twenty years Howard Scheps hired and trained thousands of frontline election workers for the City’s polling places, absent-voter count boards, receiving boards and other election positions.

He tells us firsthand the practices, policies, laws, checks, and balances that are in
place at the local and state level to ensure and protect your right to vote.

A trained economist, Mr. Scheps worked on Wall Street, in the Federal Government and General Motors Corporation headquarters before serving as an Election Specialist for the City of Ann Arbor.

He is a graduate of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, interned at Brentwood/Cleveland Clinic Hospital, graduated from the Emergency Medicine residency program at Akron General Medical Center, and has a Master’s degree in Health Administrations.

Speaker’s Synopsis: Ninety miles separate the U.S. from Cuba, but since the Cuban
revolution, the two countries have been worlds apart. The United States embargo, the fall of the U.S.S.R., and the death of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez have all had major economic impact on the Caribbean island and its ability to progress its standard of living. Although a low income country, the socialist policies of Cuba have made great strides in the delivery of health care to their inhabitants, as well as assisting other countries in need. How does a socialist country with a marginal economy provide the same longevity and infant mortality as the United States health system with all of its technology and resources?

This study group uses essays, poems and memoir excerpts about aging written by women as prompts for reflective writing.

Following a discussion, members write during class and voluntarily share their writing with the group. Sample prompts might include: write about a fear you have about growing older; describe a strength or positive attribute that has emerged in you as you’ve grown older. This is not a creative writing class, but an opportunity to reflect more deeply about what aging means to us as women.

One of detective fiction’s most iconic characters, Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, has been portrayed by many actresses.

In this study group for those 50 and above we’ll see how six different actresses have portrayed this singular character as we watch a different Miss Marple film/television adaptation each week. The study group will consider how it’s been done differently, the same, and how this has evolved over time.

Instructor George Ferrell is a Christie and detective mystery fiction fan and instructor, who has been researching the history of Christie on film. He will lead this study group for three hours sessions on Mondays from October 23 thorough December 4.

We’ll explore how Jesus interacted with and treated women during his ministry and how they responded. Looking into questions like: What were the cultural norms for women during Jesus’ life? Was Jesus a feminist? What do Paul’s letter to the Romans and John’s Gospel tell us about early women disciples?

Then we will discuss women’s roles in the very early Christian communities up to about 300 A.D. The New Testament will be used as well as several other references. There will be time for questions and discussion and some possibly surprising revelations. An outline and list of references will be provided. Over the past 50 years there has been a wealth of academic and research interest in these topics and well over 100 books have been written.

Instructor Peggy Clough will lead this study group for those 50 and above for two hours on Tuesdays October 24 and 31.

U. S. federal income tax policies include a large number of provisions widely known as tax breaks or tax loopholes. More specifically they come in the form of deductions, credits, exclusions and preferential rates. They have the effect of significantly reducing the income taxes paid (i.e., the effective tax rate) by individuals and corporations. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates in 2017 all tax breaks combined will amount to $1.6 trillion.

This study group for those 50 and over will focus on the political psychology of these tax breaks: the attitudes and behaviors of individuals, interest groups, political parties and policymakers in the public policymaking process. Discussion of a large number of specific tax breaks will be included. Information on tax breaks will be distributed by the instructor to provide a foundation for the sessions.

Dr. Pedraza, is a Professor of Sociology and American Culture at UM, where she received a B.A. and M.A.; her Ph.D. in Sociology is from the University of Chicago. She was born and raised in Cuba, from where she immigrated with her family. Her work seeks to understand the causes and consequences of immigration as a historical process that forms and transforms persons and nations. She is the author of three books and numerous articles.

In this talk Professor Pedraza traces the changing relationship of the church and state during the Cuban revolution. Over the course of nearly 60 years, the Cuban revolution has had several distinct relationships to the Church, ranging from open confrontation and silencing to incorporation. Changing its definition from an atheist society in the early years of the revolution to a secular society now, today it is more possible to be religious and to practice one’s faith in Cuba than it was earlier in this half century.

This is the last in a six-lecture series. The subject is Cuba: Our Neighbor in Transition. The next lecture series will start November 2, 2017. The title is The Common People in Modern Politics.

The discovery of DNA has not only made it possible to convict the guilty, it has also resulted in discovering the awful errors of our criminal justice system. Almost 1,800 people serving time in prison have been exonerated – they are in fact innocent of the crime.

Who are they and how did this happen? Last year alone five people were exonerated while waiting on death row to be executed.

This 90 minute lecture for those 50 and above by the Hon. Donald E. Shelton, who directs the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program at UM-Dearborn, explores how these innocent people ended up in prison and what changes need to be made to prevent such miscarriages of justice in the future.

Dr. Frantz is an Assistant Professor in the Political Science Department at Michigan State University. She studies authoritarian politics, with a focus on democratization,
conflict, and development. She has written four books on dictatorships and development, and her work has appeared in multiple academic and policy-oriented journals.

Populism is spreading across the globe. Various causes lie behind the populist upsurge, ranging from increased economic hardship to frustrations with
globalization. The consequences are worrisome. Today’s populist wave is paving the way for competitively elected leaders to subtly dismantle their countries’ democratic institutions. This form of transition to dictatorship in which incumbents slowly chip away at constraints on their leadership is also associated with the initiation of personalist rule, the most pernicious form of autocracy.

This is the first in a six-lecture series. The subject is Populism: The Common People in Modern Politics. The next lecture series will start January 11, 2018. The title is Architecture: Shaping Buildings; Shaping Us.

political philosophy, especially on democratic theory, egalitarianism and its history, and the roles of experts and citizens in democratic policy making.

This talk will explain what populism is and trace its origins to tensions in democracy going back to Rousseau. The speaker will show how populism can be either left-wing or right-wing, highlight the characteristic messages of populist leaders, and argue that populism, although cast as a fulfillment of democracy, is a threat to it as well as to sound public policy formation.

Dr. Ball is the William H. Payne Collegiate Professor of Education and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan. She is the director of TeachingWorks and a former elementary teacher. Ball’s research focuses on teaching mathematics in ways that disrupt the reproduction of inequity and make it possible for children to enjoy and engage in mathematics in and out of school. Dr. Ball is an expert on teacher education, and her current work centers on how to improve the quality of beginning teaching.

Despite powerful notions, skillful teaching does not come naturally. Teaching depends on specialized knowledge of content and the ability to understand others. It requires good judgment and the capacity to build relationships with and among people, create respectful learning environments, and understand the role of cultures, contexts and communities. The presentation will focus on what is required to prepare beginning teachers and why everyone needs to stand up for the power of skillful teaching.

This is the third in OLLI’S distinguished lecture series for 2017-18. A variety of topics will be covered. There is one lecture each month, for a total of ten. The next lecture will be on December 12, 2017. The subject is An Update on Health Care Reform: Where Does it Stand?

This study group will focus on the 90-minute film, “Poverty Inc.” which provides a look into the poverty fighting efforts of the last decades, primarily outside the U.S. It includes a look at the metrics to measure progress, with observations on what works and what does not work. It does not question the good intentions of those involved, but does take a serious look at progress and trends.

As time permits, other materials will also be consulted. This will be a discussion oriented class.

Instructor Leo Shedden will serve as discussion leader for this study group for those 50 and over which will meet for two hours on Tuesdays, November 14 and 28 and December 12.

Dr. Deegan-Krause, Professor of Political Science, Wayne State University, received his B. A. in Economics and History from Georgetown University and his Ph.D. in Government and International Relations from the University of Notre Dame. His research focus is on political and governmental systems in Central and Eastern Europe. He has authored or co-edited books and journal articles on a variety of political topics. His current research focuses on political party system transformation, populism, and the sources of electoral support for authoritarian leaders.

We have come to associate the word populism with the right in Western Europe and with the left in Latin America, but in Eastern Europe new political movements advance not from the left or the right but from the outside, as dissatisfied citizens rally around non-political celebrities to challenge what they see as a corrupt status quo. As the trend-setter in this new political style, Eastern Europe offers insights into an increasingly widespread variation on populism.

Our prisons are overflowing and the costs in human and monetary terms are enormous. How and why have we sentenced the over 2.2 million adults currently in our prison systems?

This class discusses how judges decide criminal sentences and how politicians control those sentencing decisions. After 8 years of attempting to reduce our prison populations, has the new attorney general signaled a return to the mass incarceration resulting from the “War on Drugs”?

We discuss the fact that more than half of all federal prisoners are serving sentences for drug offenses, and the huge proportion of drug-related offenders in our state prisons. Alternative approaches to drug abuse are discussed.

Instructor the Hon. Donald E. Shelton, who directs the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program at UM-Dearborn, will lead this 90 minute session for those 50 and above.

During the last part of the twentieth century, the University of Michigan’s Central Campus underwent a remarkable transformation. Many new buildings were added but the amount of open space was preserved. Circulation systems were reorganized and nationalized, parking moved from surface lots to structures, and the order and visual appeal of the campus was significantly improved.

In this lecture, the various techniques employed by the campus planners, architects, and landscape designers to achieve these outcomes will be explained and the interrelationship between the overall planning strategies and the individual implementation projects will be described.

This lecture for those 50 and above by Fred Mayer who was the University Planner for The University of Michigan from 1968 to 2003 will meet for two hours.

Dr. Markovits is the Karl W. Deutsch Collegiate Professor of Comparative Politics and German Studies and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan. His many books, articles, and reviews on topics as varied as sports, dog rescue, and many aspects of European and comparative politics have been published in fifteen languages. Markovits has received many prestigious prizes and fellowships. He has also won multiple teaching awards, most notably the Golden Apple Award at the University of Michigan in 2007. In the same year, the University of Lueneburg in Germany awarded Markovits an honorary doctorate. In 2012, the Federal Republic of Germany bestowed on Markovits its Cross of the Order of Merit, First Class, one of the highest honors given by that country to its citizens or foreigners.

In Germany, France, Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, and a number of other European countries, populist movements have
appeared in many guises altering these countries’ politics and policies. While sui generis, these constructs have displayed characteristics that are reminiscent of thought decidedly not identical with developments of the 1920s and 1930s. The lecture will highlight the current situation, analyze its causes and manifestations, and look at similarities and differences to events that contributed to a very turbulent history on that continent.

Dr. Polk is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. He received an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Computer Science and Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University and postdoctoral training in cognitive neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Polk’s research uses functional imaging of the human brain to investigate the neural architecture underlying cognition and how that architecture is influenced by age, by experience, and by genetics. He was also named to the Princeton Review list of the best 300 professors in the U.S.

Aging is associated with subtle declines in some cognitive function, but not others. As we age, we become a little more forgetful, we get distracted more easily, and we can’t process information quite as quickly. At the same time, world knowledge, emotional processing and what’s sometimes called wisdom tend to remain stable and may even improve with age. Why is that? This talk will answer that question by explaining what happens to our brains as we age, as well as discussing some scientifically verified approaches that can help our brains age more gracefully.

Dr. Allen Gyure is Professor of Architecture at Lawrence Technological University. His research focuses on American architecture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His books include Frank Lloyd Wright’s Florida Southern College, The Chicago Schoolhouse,1856-2006: High School Architecture and Educational Reform, and the recently published Minoru Yamasaki: Humanist Architecture for a Modernist World. Dr. Gyure serves on the Board of Directors of Docomomo Michigan and is a member of the Michigan Historic Preservation Review Board.

This presentation will provide an overview of architect Minoru Yamasaki’s most celebrated buildings and his significance to modern architecture. Yamasaki’s popularity arose from a unique form of humanist architecture which melded his interest in invoking feelings of “serenity” and “delight” with insights gained from studying historical architecture around the world. His work offered a gentler, more decorated style of modernism distanced from the obsession with function or structure that
characterized much of contemporary architecture.

This is the second in a six-lecture series. The subject is Architecture: Shaping Buildings; Shaping Us. The next lecture series will start March 8, 2018. The title is Behavioral and Social Sciences: Real World Applications.

We will read and discuss “Blind Spots” by Madeleine L. Van Hecke, which explains why smart people do dumb things. Luckily, our minds work for us (mostly) 80 to 90 percent of the time. But what about the rest of the time when we jump to conclusions, don’t allow ourselves the time to think things through or can’t see the forest from the trees.

This book contains anecdotes and tactics to avoid forehead-slapping duh moments. It is derived from research on cognitive myths, problems and critical thinking. Please read the Preface and Chapter 1 for the first session.

Instructor Gerry Lapidus will lead this study group for those 50 and over for two hours on Mondays from January 22 through February 26.

Christianity spread by the spoken and written word, and by pictures. Jesus’ followers went out into the Roman Empire to tell stories of his life. For two hundred years scribes recorded their tales. Literate Apostles like Paul wrote letters that belong among the world’s great literature. Unknown artists painted portraits, stories, symbols, and signs.

This course for those 50 and over traces the evolution of Christian art focusing on Eastern Christian churches. We will include a field trip to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church to view newly installed icons.

Instructor Mike Kapetan has created art for churches of all denominations, synagogues and Buddhist temples.

Anya Sirota is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on contemporary
cultural production and its relationship to architecture and urbanism. Sirota is principal of the award-winning design studio Akoaki and director of the Detroit-based Michigan Architecture Prep program. She holds a Master in Architecture from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and a B.A. in Modern Culture and Media from Brown University.

In the aftermath of Modernism’s perceived urban failures, a cadre of architects is becoming increasingly aware that a building might not always be the best solution to a spatial problem. The lecture will explore how certain practices are reinventing the architectural profession, replacing the model of the heroic visionary with a more collaborative, experimental, and interdisciplinary approach to work in the built environment.

Prosecutors claim that jurors who watch shows like “CSI” on television are “wrongfully” acquitting guilty criminals when they don’t see the kind of forensic science evidence that they see on TV. The media has labeled this the “CSI Effect”. But is it true?

This class for those 50 and over discusses empirical research into real juror expectations and demands for scientific evidence, whether it might better be called the “tech effect”, and how the criminal justice system needs to adjust to these modern jurors.

This study group will meet for 90 minutes and will be led by Donald Shelton, who directs the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program at UM-Dearborn.

How do these writers perceive “resolving” Palestine/Israel conflict? What do these writers dream of for their generation and beyond? Do we, concerned Americans, see that part of the world in ways similar or different from the ways those writers see it? Why do we agree or disagree with these writers? Participants in this course will understand Palestine/Israel conflict through the eyes of novelists from Palestine/Israel.

Dr. Soroka is the Michael W. Traugott Collegiate Professor of Communication
Studies and Political Science, and Faculty Associate in the Center for Political Studies at the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan. His research focuses on political communication, the sources and/or structure of public preferences for policy, and the relationships between public policy, public opinion, and mass media.

News about politics is predominantly negative, during and outside of election campaigns. This has been especially evident in the recent past. What accounts for the prevalence of negativity in politics? Is this negativity problematic for political
knowledge and engagement? This lecture explores the prevalence of negativity in
modern politics, and offers some explanations – based on survey data and psychophysiological experiments – for the power of negative over positive information in politics.

We will start with an overview of taxonomy--the art and science of naming living things--and a discussion of just what it means for something to be alive. We will then proceed on a journey through the tree of life, briefly glimpsing each of the major groups: animals, fungi, plants, protists, bacteria, and viruses.

Along the way we will discuss research into the purpose and function of organisms, using a combination of lecture and discussion with outside readings. Mystery lovers, this is the group for you. Instead of reading familiar authors, we will be searching for new talent. So, bring a list of your favorite authors and share them with us.

Each month the group will select an author and you can read a book of your choice from that author’s repertoire. The following month we will discuss the author’s ideas and writing techniques to learn how they are applied across his/her books. We will also talk about what we liked or disliked about the books we read. Please read any book by Alafair Burke for the first session.

This study group for those 50 and over will be led by instructor Sydney Kaufman. In order to allow time for the readings between classes, the group will be held on March 14, April 11, May 9, June 13, and July 11.

Dr. Croson received her Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University, and has spent
the past 23 years doing research in experimental and behavioral economics. Some of her areas of focus include how individuals make financial decisions, what influences charitable and philanthropic giving, and bargaining and negotiation. She currently serves as the Dean of the College of Social Science at Michigan State University, and an MSU Foundation Professor of Economics.

Behavioral economics uses psychology to help explain and predict economic decisions. The impact of this area has been recognized in a series of recent Nobel prizes (Thaler 2017, Roth 2012, Ostrom 2009, Kahneman 2002, Smith 2002).
This lecture will describe the foundations of behavioral economics, and will illustrate
the principles involved using examples of research on charitable giving and
environmentally-conscious behaviors.

This is the second in a six-lecture series. The subject is Behavioral and Social Sciences: Real World Applications. The next lecture will be March 22, 2018. The title is Looking Into The Minds of Managers and Consumers.

A central theme of American life – that all children should have a reasonable chance to live better than their parents – is no longer so true. Children have not fared well in an age of fragile families, educational challenges, drugs, crumbling communities, and disappearing jobs.

We will read and discuss the title book by Robert Putnam, who examines why and how opportunities for upward mobility are diminishing and what can be done to restore them. Please read chapter 1 of "Our Kids" for the first session.

This study group for those 50 and over will be led by instructor Gerry Lapidus on Mondays from March 19 to April 23.

In 2012, physicists at the world’s largest particle accelerator at CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland, announced to great fanfare the discovery of a fundamental particle in physics called the Higgs boson, culminating a decades long search and putting to rest what was called “the central problem in particle physics.” What exactly is the Higgs boson and why was its discovery so important? In this course we will view and discuss a Teaching Company series of lectures of the same title by Cal Tech physics professor and author Sean Carroll, who describes for a lay audience what particle physics is all about and how the Higgs gives mass to everything in the universe,
making life possible. There will be two lectures per session with 20 minutes of discussion following each. Craig Stephan is a physicist who worked for 30+ years at Ford Research and Argonne National Laboratories. He has led several OLLI discussion groups, including ones on cosmology and climate change.
This Study Group is for those over 50, and will meet Mondays March 19-April 23.

The U.S. Congress passed a ‘tax reform’ package as 2017 ended. Sixty percent of Americans believe that the GOP tax package will mostly help the wealthiest among us. But will this widespread disapproval translate into political costs or electoral losses for Republicans?

The answer may surprise you! Social science research indicates the average citizen may tolerate this situation. Upcoming elections will test the findings of the research. You will want to hear this fascinating presentation by Stephanie Leiser, PhD. and Lecturer in Public Policy at the UM Ford School of Public Policy.

Dr. Bagozzi is the Dwight F. Benton Professor of Behavioral Science in
Management at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. He specializes in basic research into human emotions, decision-making, social identity, ethics, and action. This work has been applied to the study of consumers, patients, doctors, salespersons, managers, military officers, and organizations. Recently he has investigated biological bases of manager and consumer behavior by use of fMRI and genetic analyses to study mental behavior.

We will explore what goes on in our brains (as consumers and managers) when we make decisions. Three universal, fundamental mental phenomena will be examined: theory of mind processes (based on research into autism), human empathy (as related to mirror neurons in the brain), and the underpinnings of the Machiavellian (i.e., psychopathic) mind in business and politics. Time permitting, we will consider how our genes operate, in conjunction with environmental and psychological triggers, to influence our behavior.

This is the third in a six-lecture series. The subject is Behavioral and Social Sciences: Real World Applications. The next lecture will be March 29, 2018. The title is The Why and How of Behavioral Economic Strategies to Promote Healthy Decisions.

Dr. Raimi is Assistant Professor of Public Policy at University of Michigan’s Ford School of Public Policy. A social and environmental psychologist, she studies how social goals
influence climate change mitigation. Professor Raimi is particularly interested in how people compare themselves to others, how message framing shapes attitudes toward climate policy, and how adopting one sustainable behavior affects subsequent decisions. She completed her Ph.D. in Social Psychology at Duke University and a Postdoc at the Vanderbilt University Institute for Energy and Environment.

Despite the growing scientific consensus about human-caused climate change, climate beliefs in the U.S. are sharply divided along political lines. One explanation for this polarization is motivated reasoning: People seeking out information with the goal to maintain their existing beliefs. This talk explores how people use motivated reasoning to reject evidence that challenges their worldviews, their social goals, or their belief in their own superiority, and discusses ways to discuss climate change that better account for these biases.

Dr. Arts is Medical Director of the UM Cochlear Implant Program, Director of the UM Neurotology Fellowship Training Program, and Director of the Children’s Ear and Hearing Center of Michigan. Initially a mechanical engineer, he learned in medical school about the newly-developed cochlear implant, an electronic device placed in the inner ear to enhance the hearing of the severely hearing-impaired. He knew
immediately that he wanted to work on combining engineering and medicine to restore people’s hearing. .He is now a neurotologist

Dr. Art's research has focused on cochlear implants and other applications of engineering for the treatment of ear diseases. The cochlear implant is an engineering marvel that has changed the lives of nearly 500,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing adults and children worldwide. The device and patient outcomes have steadily improved over the last 30 years. There have been some dramatic advances in technology that can profoundly affect the world of hearing impairment.

Over the past 50 years, there has been a wealth of academic and research interest in these topics and well over 100 books have been written.

This study group for those 50 and over will be led by instructor Peggy Clough on April 11 and April 18.

In this hands-on workshop, the instructions are simple: Keep your hand moving, dig deep, give yourself permission to write drech, tell the truth. I’ll give prompts and we’ll work in 15-minute bursts; then we’ll share what we wrote. For experienced writers and novices alike, this practice is a powerful tool for cutting through to your authentic voice. Bring pen and paper and be prepared to use them. This talk assesses the factors charitable givers consider when deciding which charities receive their monetary donations. For example, do donors consider the
efficiency of organizations they contribute to? Recent research suggests that the average donor is “wasting” over 15% of their contribution by opting for poorly run organizations as opposed to higher-rated charities supporting the same cause(s). The talk explores ways to use the internet to improve giving decisions. More generally, it explores the reasons people care about the causes that they support.

Dreams are typically important unconscious messages, bringing issues from the past and the present. They often contain direct or disguised wishes and/or fears. In this class we will discuss typical dreams: the recurring dream; the remembered dream of the past; the “I’m not prepared” dream (e.g. taking the final exam, but haven’t read the text).

The instructor will discuss dreams of some patients and invite class members (including himself) to bring their own. The goal is to help make better sense of these nightly messages, pointing out some of the playful and significant insights brought to light. As a group, we’ll discuss how and why writers portray the natural world and their own landscapes for broad audiences. We’ll also discuss books which may not, at first glance, follow the conventions of what we might think of as nature writing as a way to craft our own creative nonfiction. Readings will include selections from Susan Fenimore Cooper, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman among others. This study group is coordinated by Emelia Abbe, a Ph.D. candidate in UM’s Department of English.
This Study Group is for those over 50, and will meet on Tuesdays from May 8 - June 26.

Hon. Donald E. Shelton was a Circuit Judge in Ann Arbor, MI for 25 years, presiding over felony criminal cases, as well as civil and juvenile matters. He is currently the Director of the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program at the University of Michigan (UM), Dearborn. Dr. Shelton received his law degree from UM, his master’s degree from EMU, and his Ph.D. from the University of Nevada, Reno. He has authored several texts and professional articles and is a regular presenter at national conferences on criminal justice and forensic science evidence.

Speaker’s Synopsis: Our prisons are overflowing and the costs in human and monetary terms are enormous. How and why have we sentenced the over 2.2 million adults currently in our prison systems? We discuss how judges decide criminal sentences and how politicians control those sentencing decisions. We discuss the impact of the “War on Drugs”, the fact that more than ½ of all federal prisoners are serving sentences for drug offenses, and the huge proportion of drug-related offenders in our state prisons. Alternative approaches to drug abuse are discussed.

What are the personal qualities needed to live a good life? Philosophers since Aristotle have discussed this question. The term “moral virtues” refers to the character traits that are helpful or even necessary for a well-lived life; moral vices are those character traits that are obstacles to living well. We will explore moral virtues such as compassion and forgiveness.
We will read what some philosophers have written, but we will especially discuss the virtues and vices that people in the group propose and wish to explore. Elias Baumgarten, Ph.D., has taught philosophy at UM-Dearborn for 46 years and has served on ethics committees at UM Hospital for 30 years.
This Study Group is for those over 50, and will meet on Wednesday May 23-June 13.

Mr. Dale Yagiela recently retired as Executive Director of Growth Works Inc., an outstanding substance use treatment agency for adolescents and young adults in southeastern Michigan. Growth Works staff members provide treatment services for about 200 individuals, ranging in age from 13-60 years of age, whose drugs of choice among others include alcohol, cannabis, heroin, and prescription drugs. Dale holds a Master’s degree in Community Development and Education from UM. He is a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) and a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in the State of Michigan. Dale is well known as a dedicated therapist, an expert in the field of substance abuse, and as a tough, straight talking, advocate for children and adolescents.

Mr. Yagiela will briefly outline the history of treatment, discuss what traditionally was addressed and the various models, the notion of "recovery systems of care", and how we aid and support continued recovery, instead of focusing on pathology. He will address medically assisted treatment, the use of peer recovery support, the new intervention and detox model they are developing with St. Mary, the public safety departments in western Wayne County, the role of trauma in SUD, the need to treat it, and the need to sustain recovery engagement for five years following intervention.

The city of Flint, Michigan has had more than its fair share of challenges and negative publicity — especially in recent years. But that was not always the case. Flint used to be known as Vehicle City, a vibrant urban center where vehicles - initially, carriages and later, automobiles - were invented and produced. Discover this rich heritage on this unique and varied excursion.
We’ll begin with a bus tour of the city followed by a guided tour of the former Durant-Dort Carriage Company Factory One, which is considered to be the birthplace of General Motors and the epicenter of the global auto industry. From there, we will head east to the Flint Institute of Arts, where you will enjoy a private luncheon and ample time to explore on your own.
Last but not least, we’ll visit the Applewood Estate, the former home of the Mott family, who not only played a significant role in the development of the auto industry, they left an indelible mark on both Flint and Ann Arbor through their philanthropy. Guided tours will involve light walking with stair climbing (some of which will be steep). Please notify us of physical limitations in advance so that we can work with each location to accommodate any special needs or requests. Boarding begins at 8:00 a.m. to ensure prompt departure at 8:30 a.m.
