Enjoy an interesting evening at a hidden treasure of Ypsilanti. Michigan Ladder Company has been in operation since 1901. They have served as a witness to the changes happening all around them -- delivery wagons becoming trucks, B-24 bomber planes overhead before going off to fight in WW II, trains passing and then not, businesses coming and going. Yet, they have made their fine products at the same location for the past 115 years. All of their ladders are made up to a quality -- not down to a price.

We thought it would be fun to learn more about how they have survived the changes in their business and community and see the historical building they still occupy. Tom Harrison, CEO and owner, will talk with us about his company. Afterwards, we will walk to dinner at the ABC (Arbor Brewing Company) Microbrewery, 720 Norris, Ypsilanti.

After 5 events are open to the public, and do not require OLLI membership.

Join OLLI on October 16th for a day filled with rich history and current issues. We’ll begin the morning by having a bus tour of the old Hastings Street neighborhood, Lafayette Park, Black Bottom, and Paradise Valley, emphasizing insights into neighborhood decline, racial challenges, and impact of expressways for urban renewal.

Next, a docent-led tour of the Motown Museum, filled with fun, music, and history. Enjoy a soul-food buffet lunch at Bert’s Market Place with a brief presentation and Q&A about the era of jazz, Motown, and civil rights. We will also have time to view the historical murals located inside Bert’s jazz club.

For the afternoon, you can choose between a visit to either (1) the Charles H. Wright African-American Museum, where there will be a docent-led tour of its main permanent exhibit entitled “And Still We Rise: Our Journey through African-American History and Culture.” Visitors will travel over time and across geographic boundaries, or (2) the Detroit Historical Museum to view the exhibit “Detroit 67: Perspectives. Looking Back to Look Forward,” which covers a period of 150 years. In these sessions, participants will discover how writers from around the world see the world and how they perceive the past, the present, and the future of their societies. Do we, educated Americans, see our world in ways similar or different from the ways those writers see it? On what do we agree or disagree with these writers? Let us fly together with these writers and look at the world through their perceptive eyes.

Our first journey will be in the world of a novel titled Exit West. Our tour guide will be the book’s author Mohsin Hamid. Please come to the first meeting having read the novel and ready to fly… Subsequent readings/discussions will be determined at the first meeting, according to the group’s interests.

We will explore and refute the many reasons used to deny women entry to the ordained ministry of priest through the centuries. This will include the excuse the Vatican currently uses to deny women the right to answer the call of their God to the priesthood. We will briefly discuss the factual evidence that there were female priests in Christianity from 125 AD into the 9th century. There will be time for questions and discussion and some possibly surprising revelations. An outline and list of references will be provided. Over the past 50 years there has been a wealth of academic and archeologic research interest in these topics and well over 100 books have been written.

Instructor Peggy Clough is a retired Physical Therapist from UMMC. She was on faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and has lectured at five other universities. Over the past 10 years she has read and researched women’s roles in Christianity and the evidence that has been discovered supporting the ordination of women in the Roman Catholic Church. The timeline she authored entitled Ordination of Women in the Catholic Church: Facts and Discoveries has been published on the internet.

Andrei S. Markovits is the Karl W. Deutsch Collegiate Professor of Comparative Politics and German Studies and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan. His many books, articles and reviews on topics as varied as sports, dog rescue and many aspects of European and comparative politics have been published in fifteen languages. He has received many prestigious prizes and fellowships. He has also won multiple teaching awards, most notably the Golden Apple Award at the University of Michigan in 2007.

In Germany, France, Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, and a number of other European countries, populist movements have appeared recently in many guises, altering these countries’ politics and policies. The movements have displayed characteristics that are reminiscent of - though not identical to developments of the 1920s and 1930s. The lecture will highlight the current situation, analyze its causes and manifestations, and look at similarities and differences to earlier events that contributed to a very turbulent history in Europe.

This is the first in a series of monthly lectures on various topics. The next lecture will be on October 9th. The title is How Legal “Ethics” Kept an Innocent Man in Prison for 26 Years.

In this hands-on writing workshop, the instructions are simple: keep your hand moving, dig deep, give yourself permission to write badly, tell the truth. I’ll give vivid prompts to get hands moving, and we’ll write in quick bursts.
When we’ve finished we’ll share what we wrote. For experienced writers and novices alike, this practice is a powerful tool for cutting through the noise and discovering or re-discovering your authentic voice.

In March, The New York Times Book Review featured 15 books by women that their critics see as “opening new realms to us, whose books suggest and embody unexplored possibilities in form, feeling and knowledge.” They say these books set the agenda for the 21st century. So the question for this class is: what does that agenda look like?

Before the first meeting I will send the NYT article to participants so they can read the short reviews of each book. At the first meeting we will select 4 of these to begin to answer our “research” question. We’ll read approximately 100 pages a week. We’ll have discussion, small group analysis in class, occasional lectures on style, structure, etc.

The first meeting will describe what makes music “western”, describing the sonic power of chords. They create anticipation and prediction in any type of western music and you will hear examples drawn from classic folk and popular music. The second session will explore Indonesian golden gong sounds, in which time cycles guide the audience through many layers of sound. The third class will cover Japanese noh drama music, which is characterized by the horizontal drive of drum patterns that equal vertical western chords.

Nearly 400 years have passed since the first encounter between Native Americans and the French in the Great Lakes region. Neither culture was ever the same again.
The early “exchange” was mutually beneficial and cordial. The Native people did not feel threatened by the Europeans nor did the Europeans fear the indigenous people. Each had a commodity the other needed: trade goods for the Native Americans, furs and fish for the Europeans.
The two cultures often blended with intermarriage, for the French population was made up primarily of trappers, missionaries and soldiers. It was not until a third ingredient was added, the British, that conflict occurred in the French and Indian War.

This program will explore stage fright (aka performance anxiety). We will discuss why you may doubt yourself, despite doing all you could do to prepare.
You will learn about the complexities of stage fright and some practical strategies to optimize your outcome and enjoyment when speaking or performing. Anyone performing or speaking in front of groups (or wishing they could) will want to attend.
Julie Jaffee Nagel has many years of experience dealing with her own stage fright as a pianist, then later treating performance anxious individuals as a psychologist, and writing about the topic. Julie earned a Ph.D. in Psychology and Social Work from the U.of M., a graduate of Juilliard and the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.
Her book publications include “Managing Stage Fright; A Guide for Musicians and Music Teachers” (2017), and “Melodies of the Mind” (2013). She is in private practice in Ann Arbor.

On this November 5th day-long tour, OLLI members 50 and over will experience some ways in which the infrastructure of the University of Michigan and the Ann Arbor community embrace Korean history and culture.

First stop will be UM’s Wallace House, home of the 45-year-old Knight-Wallace Fellowship program for mid-career journalists. Wallace 2018-19 Fellow, Seungjin Choi, reporter for the Maeil Business Newspaper, Seoul, South Korea, will talk about the history of nuclear confrontation in the Koreas. Discussion, questions and answers will follow.

Participants will also enjoy morning refreshments and a chance to browse areas where the Fellows meet regularly during their year of study at UM. Mr. Choi’s study area while in residence is reshaping strategies for digital news distribution.

A traditional Korean lunch will follow at Miss Kim’s Korean restaurant in Kerrytown with a special selection of favorite menu items. Water is included with lunch with the option for members to purchase a Korean beverage.

After lunch, we will journey to the Jewel Heart Buddhist Learning Center on the outskirts of Ann Arbor. Jewel Heart will be collaborating with Ann Arbor’s Zen Buddhist Temple to explore the early traditions of Korean Buddhism, the hostility, repression and violence they experienced over many centuries and their eventual expansion into the West with other Buddhist traditions. The collaborators will address, particularly, how the principles of Buddhism are being integrated into Western culture. Time will be available to ask questions and visit the spaces of Jewel Heart.

“…all tourists are dear to Hermes, the god of travel, who is patron also of amiable curiosity and freedom of mind.” George Santayana, The Philosophy of Travel. There is an intimate relationship between philosophy and travel: both challenge our everyday assumptions and both raise important ethical questions.

This course will explore those connections. Some of the questions we will discuss include: Is there a moral value to travel? What are the moral virtues or even obligations of the “good traveler”? Should we “do as the Romans do” even if they act immorally (e.g., disrespect women)? Do we have a moral obligation to represent our country when we travel abroad? Can we truly understand another culture and should we try? When does travel become voyeurism? Does our quest for “authentic” travel destroy the very authenticity of the places we visit? If we are concerned about impoverished areas, should we use our money to help them rather than visit them?

Instructor Elias Baumgarten just retired from teaching philosophy for 46 years at UM-Dearborn and has traveled to over 70 countries. This study group for those 50 and over will meet on Mondays, 1-3, from October 1 through October 29.

British East India Company, a trading concern formed in London in the year 1600, sent some merchants to India to buy textiles, spices and other commodities which were in demand in Europe at the time.
Over the next hundred and fifty years thee merchants prospered, got involved in the political intrigues among the local rulers, and became rulers of the country. The Company ruled India for a hundred years and subsequently yielded power to British parliament as master of India.
In the process a minor European country evolved into a global empire and a super power. Economic crises in the 20th century and two world wars wrecked the empire and led to the birth of independent India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The lectures include the history of conquest, subordination and rule; and the resulting political, economic and cultural changes; and the birth of a modern democracy in India.
This Study Group for those 50 or above will meet Oct. 3 through Nov. 21. No lecture on Oct. 13.

Fairy tales, fables, picture books and stories about real life: adults use all kinds of narrative to teach children important lessons. But what is it the children hear when they listen to all those words?

In this interactive workshop we will make our way through an alphabet of stories told by children. As we explore the meaning-making they do through story, we will strengthen our own creative and critical thinking skills.

For 20 years, Instructor Resa Matlock has been collecting, connecting and nurturing children’s stories, using the work of Vivian Paley, kindergarten teacher and MacArthur “genius,” as a guide. This study group for those 50 and over will meet Wednesdays, 11-1, from October 3 – November 21.

This course offers a brief introduction to the way poets have used rhythm and meter to express thought and feeling over the centuries. We’ll explore the connection between form and expression through the whole history of poetry in English, from Langland and Chaucer to Bishop and Heaney.

Readings will be drawn from a short anthology of favorite passages and poems the instructor will provide. Participants will read and hear examples of different verse forms: songs. sonnets, couplets, alliterative verse, blank verse, free verse, really free verse, and poems in unusual meters and stanzas. We will study how poetry works as narrative, as a vehicle for experience, and as self-expression.

Michigan was born of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, written at the culmination of the American Revolution. The document carved out the land that was to be divided into no more than 5 and no fewer than 3 territories.
Of equal importance were the terms, two of which were firsts in legal history: no slavery was allowed and there was a provision for free public education. Michigan became a separate territory in 1805.
The War of 1812 began to mold the character of Michigan. The “Toledo War” brought the struggle to an end, with Michigan giving up claims in Ohio and gaining most of the Upper Peninsula. The “Boy Governor”, Stevens Mason, fought for statehood which was achieved in 1837, after the “Frostbitten Convention” held in Ann Arbor.

And what about all the plastic we use in our daily lives? If so, your queries can all be answered through chemistry and this course will focus on the magical chemical processes behind the making of beer and wine, the production of food and artificial flavors and the generation of plastics.

Come join us to learn how to think like chemists as we discuss these topics and any others you might have in mind!

Instructors Ellen Aguilera and Elizabth Meucci are graduate students working towards their Ph.D. in organic chemistry. They share a passion for science and look forward to sharing their “magic tricks” with you! This study group for those 50 and over will meet on Tuesdays, 5:30-7 p.m., from October 9 through November 27

Late in the 19th century, Michigan had more millionaires than nearly every other state. The names of those lumber barons are part of Michigan’s story: David Whitney, Arthur Hill, Henry Sage, William Atwood, Charles Hackley and Henry Crapo.
Lumber was “green gold”, worth more than the gold from California’s Gold Rush. The way of life for the lumberjacks or shanty boys as they called themselves was unique to them.
Everything at the lumber camp had a name: widow-maker, Gabriel’s horn, river hogs, swampers, skidders, big wheel, log mark, and the most important person, cookee (cook.)

The Silk Route is a collection of pathways that, together, link China to Vienna, Istanbul, Baghdad, and India across the Inner Asian steppe and desert.
During our meetings participants will discuss the Silk Route as a cultural conduit, on the one hand, as the source of empire and technologies on the other, and participants will look at specific examples of cultural dissemination.
The Silk Route has provided some of the most engaging and best written volumes of travel literature. There will be no required readings, but students may enjoy Owen Lattimore's "The Desert Road to Turkestan", from 1928, or the Franciscan William of Rubruck's account of his journey to Karakorum in 1255, where he found a Parisian goldsmith preparing a soft drink dispenser for the Khan.

Bi-partisan discussions about prison reform go back and forth in both state and federal legislatures, but the United States still incarcerates more than two million people. In some jails and prisons, conditions remain deplorable. Funds are being cut in the federal system, compromising some rehabilitation efforts.

Instructor Judy Patterson Wenzel, author of Light from the Cage: 25 Years in a Prison Classroom, will lead a discussion for those 50 and over about who is incarcerated --and about the need for prison education. We will discuss America’s focus on punishment instead of rehabilitation and healing and how race has become such a potent reality in the criminal justice system.

With the success of last year’s Introduction to Readers Theater, we’ve added a new course. In Theater Circles for Seniors, the eight members of the class will be divided into three groups. Each small group will both rehearse within their circle, and then, reading from a script, will present their ten-minute play to the rest of the class. Following each of three play readings there will be a discussion.

In a positive environment, Theater Circles for Seniors provides an opportunity for each participant to engage with meaningful literary works while developing positive relationships; and it’s fun!

Sara Pozzi is a Professor and the Graduate Program Chair at the Department of Nuclear and Radiological Sciences, UM. Her research interests include the development of new methods for nuclear materials detection, identification, and characterization for nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear material control and accountability, nuclear safeguards, and national security programs. Prof. Pozzi is the director of the Consortium for Verification Technology, a consortium of 12 universities and 9 national laboratories dedicated to the development of new technologies for nuclear treaty verification.

Since the discovery of fission, nuclear chain reactions, and nuclear weapons, preventing the spread of nuclear weapons has become a top priority for our nation and the world. Several international treaties have been put into place to curb the expansion of nuclear capabilities. Nevertheless, there are states that may be pursuing elements of an overt or covert nuclear weapons program. New science and technology developments are needed to verify the existing or proposed treaties in this area and to ensure that nuclear weapons are never used again.

Acquiring knowledge and understanding are central to making our way in the modern world. Some of us claim to be experts because we try to know a lot about one topic.
Most of us are satisfied with knowing enough about some topics to get through the day. The book, "The Knowledge Illusion", by two cognitive scientists, Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach, explores why we are all under the illusion that we know more than we actually do.
They discuss how we think in groups, with technology and about science and politics. They also make recommendations for how to cope with our limitations. We will read their accessible book across the six sessions. Humility and curiosity are the only prerequisites for the course.
Craig Ramsay is a political scientist who taught for decades while coping with his own illusions of knowledge.

Dr. Chin received her Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley in 1999 and a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Washington. She is a scholar of modern Europe with particular expertise in immigration and human mobility; race and ethnicity; and colonialism and post-colonialism. Her work addresses some of the most pressing issues in modern European history, specifically the massive socio-cultural effects of postwar labor migration on European nations and their struggles to come to grips with the radical demographic diversity it produced.

How did anti-Muslim sentiment, xenophobia, and populism become major concerns for European society? What are the background factors driving this political upheaval in Europe? How, in other words, did Europe become multicultural and what have been the larger social and political effects of this dramatic demographic transformation? Can Europe structurally and financially afford to allow large numbers of immigrants to settle and still retain its culture and current liberal policies amid these changes?

We will show you how to use Morningstar and other resources to answer these and other questions about actively managed funds (60) while you explore how to integrate them into your portfolio. Time permitting, we will explore other web-based investment tools and investing in individual stocks.
Dale is a retired research professor and Bob is a director and current Vice-President of the SE Michigan Chapter of Better Investing.
This Study Group for those 50 and over will run Mondays 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. November 5 – December 10.

David Thronson is Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Michigan State University College of Law. He also teaches immigration law at the University of Michigan as a visiting professor. Thronson’s research focuses on the intersection of family law and immigration law, in particular on the impact of immigration law on children.

U.S. immigration law is hotly debated yet widely misunderstood. Even as intense political battles surround immigration law and policy, such fights are often unencumbered by accurate perceptions of the general nature and details of our nation’s immigration system. Immigration is an issue that implicates fundamental national and personal values, but we cannot attempt to find common ground on these without a shared and accurate understanding of how our immigration system actually functions.

This is the third in a series of six weekly lectures. The subject is immigration. The next lecture will be on November 15. The title is THE REAL IMMIGRATION DEBATE: WHOM TO LET IN AND WHY.

Talking about death often provokes discomfort, anxiety and fear. This study group provides an opportunity to explore issues surrounding one’s own death, including the business of death, funerals and rituals, and end of life conversations with family and friends.

You will examine these components of death, enabling you to increase your comfort level in conversations with family and friends, to become better advocates, and to understand how grief may be influenced by events that do or do not happen at the time of death. The group will provide many opportunities to share your thoughts and experiences.

Instructor Susan Sefansky has been a social worker with University of Michigan Health System since 1985, (retiring in 2017). She has worked with many aspects of death, dying, grief and loss from pediatrics to geriatrics, and has developed a comfort level in discussing death and being around the deceased.

This study group for those 50 and over will meet on Wednesdays, 1:15 – 2:45, from November 9 through November 30. There is no class on November 23.

Mark Krikorian, a nationally recognized expert on immigration issues, has served as Excutive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) since 1995. The Center, an independent, non-partisan research organization in Washington, D.C., examines and critiques the impact of immigration on the United States. His knowledge and expertise in the immigration field are sought by Congress, where he has frequently testified, as well as the mainstream and new media. Mr. Krikorian has published articles in numerous outlets and his most recent publication is Open Immigration: Yea & Nay, co-authored with Alex Nowrasteh of the Cato Institute.

The immigration debate in the U.S. has been contentious for decades. Most focus has been on enforcement issues. Although important, they are less fundamental than a question that too often goes unaddressed: Why limit immigration at all? Almost everyone at least pays lip service to the need for limits of some kind, but we don’t often enough challenge each other to explain what limits we support and why. If we are ever to have a rational debate about immigration, the starting point has to be a candid acknowledgment of our goals and preferences.

This is the fourth in a series of six weekly lectures. The subject is immigration. The next lecture will be on November 29. The title is LOOKING BEYOND COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM: A NEW IMMIGRATION POLITICS.

Comprehensive Immigration reform” balancing increased legal immigration with extensive border and workplace enforcement, has been a goal shared by both Democratic and Republican presidents. But Congress has been unable to pass such a bill for two decades. Instead, immigration advocates should champion reform that other countries have successfully implemented: based on state and regional economic needs, which can win support from state-level political coalitions. Such proposals would tie immigration to economic impact, eliminating a “shadow system of residency that currently exists outside the law.”

Saeed A. Khan is Senior Lecturer in the Departments of Near East & Asian Studies and Global Studies at Wayne State University - Detroit, Michigan, where he teaches Islamic and Middle East History, Politics and Culture, and where he also is a Fellow at the Center for the Study of Citizenship. He is also Adjunct Professor in Islamic Studies at the University of Detroit-Mercy and at Rochester College, co-teaching a course on Muslim-Christian Diversity. With areas of focus including US policy, globalization, Middle East and Islamic Studies, as well as genomics and bioethics, Prof. Khan has been a contributor to several media agencies, such as CSpan, NPR, Voice of America, the National Press Club and is a regular panelist on Turning Point.

The first year of the Trump presidency has been marked by considerable rhetoric and by shifts in long standing US foreign policy for the Middle East. Understanding the difference between mere rhetoric and reality matters in a complex, conflict-ridden international hotspot. This lecture will provide a historical survey of America’s role in one of the world’s most volatile areas as well as an analysis of current policy and trends, including assessments of what will be the consequences to regional and global security.

This is the fourth in OLLI’S distinguished lecture series for 2018-19. A total of ten lectures will be presented covering a variety of topics. The next lecture will be January 8, 2019. The topic will be: What To Expect In Health Policy After The 2018 Elections

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have drastically shifted the costs of organizing work in different ways. It is increasingly feasible to “rent” workers through temporary and contract work, often through online platforms such as Uber. In the U.S., jobs replaced careers, and now gigs are increasingly replacing jobs, creating a precarious new class of employment. This presentation will describe how this shift happened, and speculate on what comes next.

This is the first of a six-lecture series. The subject is The Future of Work. How Will Your Grandchildren Make a Living? The next lecture will be January 10, 2019. The subject is: Renewed Activism for the Labor Movement.

Maite Tapia is Assistant Professor at Michigan State University’s School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. Her research centers on the organizing strategies of trade unions and community organizations in the U.S. and Europe, and on work, migration, and the concept of intersectionality. She has published her work in several academic journals and is co-editor of the 2014 Cornell University Press book, "Mobilizing Against Inequality: Unions, Immigrant Workers, and the Crisis of Capitalism".

Prof. Tapia will discuss a multi-year study on young workers and their level of involvement in the labor movements of four countries: France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Results suggest that two key variables affect involvement level: The openness and encouragement of unions to the leadership development of young workers, and the persistence and creativity of groups of young workers in promoting their own engagement. Young workers embody labor’s potential for movement-building and for resistance to authoritarianism and populism.

This is the second of a six-lecture series. The subject is The Future of Work. How Will Your Grandchildren Make a Living? The next lecture will be January 17, 2019. The subject is: Human Thriving in the New World of Work.

She has co-authored several books, including How to be a Positive Leader, and The Handbook of Positive Organizational Scholarship.

Today the experience of work is radically changing. Almost 40% of workers are in nonstandard jobs such as freelance or contract work. People are working remotely, connecting to each other through text, email, and collaboration technology. Work can seemingly be accomplished anytime, anywhere. In this interactive talk we will explore these changing dynamics and how they impact thriving at work.

For experienced writers and novices alike, this practice is a powerful tool for cutting through the noise and discovering or re-discovering your authentic voice.

Will artificial intelligence (AI) take away jobs or usher in a prosperous utopia? Will self-driving cars reduce our use of fossil fuels or accelerate emissions? What will a college degree be worth when knowledge work can be done by machine? This talk considers these and other questions through the lens of technology’s “Law of Amplification.” Paradoxically, what is needed most in a world of advanced technology is greater attention to human values.

In The Monarchy of Fear, author Martha Nussbaum, Professor of Law and Ethics in the Philosophy Department of the University of Chicago, writes that since the 2016 election the role of emotion in political opinion has been largely overlooked. In the U.S. and across Europe, the economic stress and rapid social changes affecting many lives have created a sense of powerlessness and a pervasive underlying fear of change.
The result is resentment and blame directed at immigrants, Muslims, minority races, and the elite. We will read this book and talk about the ideas.

Dr. Rose B. Bellanca is the President and CEO of Washtenaw Community College. In this position, she is responsible for the organization, administration, and strategic direction of the college, which serves more than 100,000 students and community members a year, employs nearly 1,500 full- and part-time employees, and has an operational budget of more than $100 million. Dr. Bellanca has more than 20 years of executive leadership in higher education. She is the fourth president to lead Washtenaw Community College since its inception in 1965.

Technology and generational changes are increasingly changing how people work. These changes are affecting education, too, as students look to take control of their education, following the lead of on-demand services that have allowed people to manage nearly every other aspect of their lives. Dr. Bellanca will discuss how these changes will shape how we will learn, live, and work.

In March of 2018, The New York Times Book Review featured 15 novels by women that their critics see as “opening new realms to us, whose books suggest and embody unexplored possibilities in form, feeling and knowledge.” They say these books set the agenda for the 21st century. So the question for this class is: what does that agenda look like?
Before the first meeting I will send the NYT article to new participants so they can read the short reviews of each novel. Sharon Quiroz will indicate the six books we will read in Session I. At the first meeting of Session II, we will select the next set, to continue with our research question. We’ll read approximately 150 pages a week, so we can cover most novels in two to three weeks. We’ll have discussion, small group analysis in class, occasional lectures on style, structure, etc.
This study group for those 50 and over will meet for 90 minutes on Thursdays from January 31 through April 18.
Instructor Sharon Quiroz has a PhD. in English, has published poetry and short stories, and is currently working on her second novel while she tries to sell the first one.

Please come to the first meeting having read the novel and ready to fly. This will be a short course for 3 weeks on the roots, application, and benefits of restorative justice as an alternative to punishment in our criminal justice system. The focus of restorative justice is on the harm done, how the victim can be healed, and how the offender can repair the harm to the victim and community. Carolyn Madden has an MA in Philosophy, Graduate Center, N.Y. and JD from Wayne State University. She was the Associate Director and lecturer for the English Language Institute and is a member of Friends of Restorative Justice of Washtenaw County.
Kathie Gourlay has an MBA from the University of Michigan, currently teaches at Washtenaw Community College, and is passionately interested in criminal justice reform. Menlo Innovations CEO, Rich Sheridan, had one thought during a difficult mid-career in the technology industry: ...things can be better -- much better! Ultimately, Rich and co-founder James Goebel invented Menlo Innovations in 2001 to “end human suffering in the world as it relates to technology.” Their unique company—which creates custom software--is so interesting that almost 4,000 people a year travel from around the world to see it. Rich is author of Joy, Inc. - How We Built a Workplace People Love. His second book, Chief Joy Officer, is due in December.

Rich will explore what an intentionally joyful work culture must choose as its focus. He will discuss what a joyful workplace looks and feels like, and how it is organized. You will see paradoxical approaches: How workplace noise increases productivity, how two people at one computer outperform hero-based organizations, how rigor and discipline emanate from a shared-belief system, how transparency conquers fear, and how quality can be a natural result of a team built on trust.

After an unusually slow recovery from the global recession in 2008, macroeconomic conditions in the U.S. have improved markedly over the past few years. Economic growth has also improved in other countries, though the pace of that expansion has become increasingly uneven, and prospects for future growth have become increasingly uncertain. This lecture will consider how escalating trade tensions and policy shifts in the U.S. are likely to impact U.S. and global growth going forward.

Most people, if asked about the Italian Renaissance, would respond with something about Leonardo di Vinci or Michelangelo. But from where did these artists get their ideas and who hired them to create their masterpieces?
This class will introduce students to the art and literature of what is called the proto-Renaissance of the 14th and early 15th centuries. We will take a look at Dante’s Divine Comedy, Petrarch and the origins of the Italian sonnet and Boccaccio’s Decameron, the introduction of which is the only contemporary account of the Plague. The background for all of these accomplishments was the rise of the merchant class and the social and economic repercussions of the arrival of plague in 1347.
Be ready for a little homework so you can come prepared to discuss and ask questions. This Study Group led by Susan Nenadic is for those 50 and over and will meet Tuesdays, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., March 12 - April 9.

Professor Andre F. Peltier teaches Writing and Literature at Eastern Michigan University, specializing in African American literature, science fiction, and comic books. Having lived in Washtenaw County for nearly 25 years, Professor Peltier has developed a strong connection to the community. His focus on comic books dates back to childhood, while his scholarly interest in graphic art and humor began as an undergrad.

This presentation will cover the development of humor in comic books and sequential art since the debut of Mad Magazine in 1952. While the focus is on the last 65 years, we will also look at earlier works and discuss the influence of political cartoons and social satire that have clearly influenced the more recent works, such as 19th Century campaign comics and the works of Ollie Harrington.

A podcast is essentially a radio show that you listen to on-demand using your computer or smartphone.

In this study group for those 50 and over we will listen to excerpts of podcasts, discuss how podcasts differ from public radio, and explore how writing for the ear (a story that is meant to be listened to) differs from writing for the eye (a story that is meant to be read).

This class is appropriate for all levels, from avid podcast listeners to those who have never listened to a podcast.

Instructor Rachel Rohr is a journalist and 2018-19 Knight-Wallace fellow at U-M. She is the managing editor of The GroundTruth Project, based at WGBH in Boston, and managing producer of GroundTruth podcast.

A look back at comedy from the Charlie Chaplin era of the 1930’s through popular modern-day titles like Wedding Crashers and The Hangover. Audiences have gone to the movies to laugh since Thomas Edison first invented the motion picture. What is it about comedy that people want to be together to share the experience? How did comedy evolve from the silent era to “talkies” and what are the challenges facing theatrical comedy for the future?

Henry Ford’s Bomber Plant at Willow Run has recently been in the news as the site for a new expanded Yankee Air Museum as well as the present home for the American Center for Mobility, ACM, where autonomous vehicle testing is conducted.

Its wartime story was recently told in an original play, “Willow Run”, presented at the Purple Rose Theater, and in several regional events honoring the thousands of Rosie the Riveters who worked there and at other WWII factories.

OLLI’s day trip itinerary will start with a partial viewing of “The Willow Run Story” movie on the trip to the Yankee Air Museum’s temporary home. A presentation will be made by Museum staff on the plans for the expansion of and moving their historical exhibits to a saved portion of the original Bomber Plant.

A catered buffet lunch at the Museum will follow a presentation by Claire Dahl, a “Tribute Rosie” sharing stories of many Rosies that served as the primary work force at the Bomber Plant.

After docent-led tours of the Museum’s exhibits, an overview presentation on the Willow Run facilities of the American Center for Mobility will be made before boarding the coach for a driving tour of the actual testing areas of the ACM and the new location of the expanded Yankee Air Museum.

The remaining portion of the Willow Run movie will be shown on the return trip to Ann Arbor.

The price of the trip includes bus transportation, lunch, snacks, gratuities, tour, and museum fees.

This trip for those 50 and over will take place on Friday, May 10 from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., however you must register for the trip early and there are no refunds without replacements inside 30 days of trip departure.

If you were a member of the Michigan State Legislature, wouldn’t you really want to know what your constituents thought were their most important priorities? How would you find that out? The Center for Michigan has the answers.

The Center, founded by Michigan Regent Phil Power in 2006, works to identify citizen priorities for the state legislature and amplify resident voices straight to Lansing. In 2018, the Center's public engagement team spoke with 8,000 residents at 173 events across the state. Their priorities provide a clear to-do list for Michigan's future.

Personnel from the Center, led by Alexandra Schmidt, the Public Engagement Director for the Center, have been busy sharing results with our Legislature. You will be fortunate to hear from her personally what Michiganders want from the legislature.

Alexandra Schmidt focuses on discerning how state policy impacts residents’ daily lives and amplifying those experiences to achieve stronger public discourse. She holds a bachelor’s degree with high honors and distinction in Urban Studies from the University of Michigan. Before joining the Center for Michigan in 2017, she worked with HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the Big 10 Network, TBS, and Comedy Central.

Charles Hiroshi Garrett is Professor of Musicology at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, where he teaches courses in classical music, jazz, and popular music. His book, Struggling to Define a Nation: American Music and the Twentieth Century, received the Irving Lowens Memorial Book Award from the Society for American Music. He also served as editor-in-chief for an award-winning reference work, The Grove Dictionary of American Music, second edition.

What is musical humor? How can a sound be funny? What makes the combination of music and humor distinctive and appealing? Drawing on comic examples across the history of American music, this presentation examines the rich relationship between music and humor, first by delving into how composers and musicians produce humor through purely musical means and then by exploring how music generates special comic effects in combination with lyrics, staging, performance, film, and new forms of media.

This is the last in a six-lecture series. The subject is Humor, Comedy, and Laughter in Everyday Life and Beyond. The next lecture series will start April 4, 2019. The subject is: Changing Gender Roles.

“What are the consequences if the people given control over our government have no idea how it works?” This is a key question posed by Michael Lewis, the author of the title book about the current administration’s appointees.
Throughout many government departments, top level jobs are unfilled and many people picked to lead are uninformed about the purposes and operation of their organizations. Author Michael Lewis investigated several Federal agencies and describes looming disasters that could occur because of mismanagement and under-funding.
We will read the book and discuss the issues. Please read through p.32 for the first session. This Study Group is for those 50 or over and will meet Mondays April 1st through April 29th at 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Kenneth W. Phifer is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Chicago Divinity School. He has been a Unitarian Universalist minister for half a century and is minister emeritus of the Ann Arbor UU Congregation.

Among the many ways in which gender roles have been shaped in the 21st century are the portraits of women (and men) in the Jewish and Christian Bibles, and the interpretations that Judaism and Christianity, as well as secular society, have put on these women (and men). Too often these interpretations of women have been negative and harmful. A more careful reading of the texts, as many scholars in the last half century have been doing, reveals much more positive images of Biblical women. There is courage, intelligence, craftiness, and common sense practicality in abundance. This lecture highlights some of these feisty women who might serve as models for the 21st century woman.

This is the first in a six-lecture series. The subject is Changing Gender Roles. The next lecture will be April 11, 2019. The title is: The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same: Gender Socialization in Early Childhood.

Karin A. Martin is a Professor and Chair of Sociology at the University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. She has published extensively on gender, sexuality, and childhood in everyday life. Her research has appeared in many outlets including American Sociological Review, Gender & Society, Child Abuse & Neglect, and Journal of Family Issues. She is author of Puberty, Sexuality, and the Self: Girls and Boys at Adolescence (Routledge, 1996).

Since the feminist movements of the 1970s, has childhood become more gender equal? We have seen enormous social changes with respect to gender in educational attainment, in the work- place, in politics, and in some aspects of marriage over the last 50 years. But what about early childhood? Do boys and girls have the same experiences and opportunities in childhood? Research suggests somewhat of a mixed picture, with some changes, some stalls, and some regression.

This is the second in a six-lecture series. The subject is Changing Gender Roles. The next lecture will be April 18, 2019. The title is: Changing Gender Economic Roles.

Columbus, Indiana, a modest industrial city located in southern Indiana, has amassed a collection of public and private buildings designed by many of the country’s leading architects. Seven buildings are recognized as National Historic Landmarks of modern architecture and numerous others are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

J. Irwin Miller, the head of Cummins Industries, a company which designs and builds diesel engines, and a fan of modern architecture, felt that great architecture would not only enhance the community but also attract a highly qualified, international workforce to live in soybean country 45 miles south of Indianapolis.

In the 1950’s the Cummins Foundation agreed to fund the design fees for public schools if they would select architects from a list that Miller had prepared. The architects listed were the leaders in their profession. The program was later expanded to other public and non-profit institutions.

Today, a collection of outstanding schools, civic buildings, and commercial structures are the lasting result of Miller’s vision.

Departing from Ann Arbor by a first class bus, we will arrive in the community of West Baden, IN., located in the vicinity of many mineral springs which attracted a large number of visitors and the development of a number of fine hotels and resorts. Outstanding among these is the West Baden Springs Hotel, where we will be spending the first night. The hotel is known for its atrium, covered with a 200 foot diameter dome. The hotel is a National Historic Landmark and we will have a guided tour of the facility prior to dinner in the Grand Colonnade.

The following morning we will return to the bus for a short drive to Columbus. The morning will include a guided bus tour of the architectural treasures of the city. We will pass by some 40 buildings and include an interior tour of some.

After lunch in the downtown we will tour the Miller home and gardens.

After checking into our hotel we will dine at the historic Upland Brewing Co. restaurant, a recently renovated structure with its own very interesting history.

The following morning we will board the bus and return to Ann Arbor.

The price of the trip includes bus transportation, hotel and gratuities.

This trip for those 50 and over will take place Monday through Wednesday, May 20 through 23, however you must register for the trip early and there are no refunds without replacements inside 30 days of trip departure.

Please see the OLLI Web Site for additional information.

Dr. Shumer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology. He is the founder and clinical director of the Child and Adolescent Gender Clinic at Mott Children’s Hospital, a clinic for transgender and gender nonconforming youth. Dr. Shumer’s research has specifically focused on improving mental health disparities in the transgender community. He has clinical expertise in this area, as well as disorders of sex development and general pediatric endocrinology and diabetes.

Chromosomes and hormones work in fetal life to differentiate males and females; these are the biological determinants of sex. But what about gender identity? What makes us feel like a boy or a girl, a man or a woman? Dr. Shumer will review what is currently known and unknown regarding the origins of gender identity.
He will also discuss epidemiology, disparities faced by transgender individuals, and current standards of care in the medical setting.

This is the fourth in a six-lecture series. The subject is Changing Gender Roles. The next lecture will be May 2, 2019. The title is: Three Hypotheses for Explaining the So-Called Oppression of Men.

The World to Come: Art in the Age of the Anthropocene awakens us to the physical and social effects of the Anthropocene, a much-debated term used to define a new geological epoch shaped by human activity. Structured around ecological issues, the exhibition presents photography, video, and sculpture that address subjects and themes related to raw materials, disasters, consumption, loss, and justice. More than thirty-five international artists, including Sammy Baloji, Liu Bolin, Dana Levy, Mary Mattingly, Pedro Neves Marques, Gabriel Orozco, Trevor Paglen, and Thomas Struth, respond to dire global and local circumstances with resistance and imagination—sustaining an openness, wonder, and curiosity about the world to come.

This is a single session study group for Osher LIfelong Learning Institute (OLLI) members.

Peter Higgins is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and interim department head of Women’s and Gender Studies at Eastern Michigan University. His research and teaching are in the area of political philosophy, which he approaches from a feminist perspective. Most of his published work, including his book, Immigration Justice (Edinburgh University Press, 2013), concerns the justice of policies by which states admit and reject prospective immigrants. He also writes on fundamental concepts in feminist theory.

Are men oppressed as men? The evidence given in support of affirmative responses to this question usually consists in examples of harms or limitations masculinity imposes on men: men must be breadwinners for their families, men can be drafted for war, etc. In this presentation, Peter Higgins will explicate three hypotheses that account for the harms and limitations masculinity imposes on men in a way that is superior to the hypothesis that men are oppressed.

This is the fifth in a six-lecture series. The subject is Changing Gender Roles. The next lecture will be May 9, 2019. The title is: Advancing Gender Equity: The Impact of Acting on Institutional Change Efforts.

The Clements Library is a treasure house of American history. During a 23-year career with the Clements, Brian Dunnigan has served as curator of maps, head of research and publications, associate director, and acting director. Daily contact with the collections has inspired reflections on some of the things that the Clements does very well, driving his exhibit themes around active collecting, conservation, solving mysteries, and more.

Dunnigan’s selections include poignant manuscripts, striking visual imagery and cartography, and some of his favorite materials from the collections, drawing especially from his expertise in the mapping of the Great Lakes. This valedictory exhibit in the Clements’s soaring Avenir Foundation Reading Room dwells on seven areas of commitment and illustrates the concepts with some of the Library's most evocative and handsome holdings.

American fiction started out as a bold response to the European novel and took narrative to places that reflected the new country and its values. American fiction continued the exploration of this new land and society well into the twentieth century.
We will explore the uniqueness and development of American fiction in short works by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Edith Wharton, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and William Faulkner. All works are available both free on the internet or in inexpensive used copies from Amazon. Students are asked to read for the first day of class Hawthorne’s stories: The Birthmark and Young Goodman Brown, available from the following link: https://sparks.eserver.org/files/imported/books/oldmanse.pdf.
This Study Group facilitated by Ira Konigsberg is for those 50 and over and will meet Wednesdays, 10:00 –11:30 a.m., May 8 - June 12.

Abigail J. Stewart is the Sandra Schwartz Tangri Distinguished University Professor of Psychology and Women’s Studies at UM. She directed the UM ADVANCE Program from 2001-2016. UM ADVANCE is a national science foundation funded program to get more women into the STEM fields. Her research focuses on academic and life experiences related to race, class, and gender.
Sara Armstrong, Ph.D. has been the director of the CRLT Theatre Program since 2012. The CRLT players is a program to train students and other actors to portray situations in which there may be unconscious biases or other modes of discrimination including gender discrimination. She has over twenty-five years of experience in acting and education in many organizations. In her role at CRLT, she develops scripts, Players sessions, and incorporates theatre into professional development programs at UM.

We will briefly describe the overall goals and programs involved in the UM ADVANCE Program’s efforts to improve gender equity and inclusion in the faculty, but will focus particularly on ADVANCE’s collaboration with the CRLT Theater Program. We will describe and illustrate both how exposure to theater sketches can raise important issues, and how facilitated discussion can help faculty gain increased understanding of issues and their potential role in addressing them.

This is the last in a six-lecture series. The subject is Changing Gender Roles. The next series will start June 13, 2019. The topic is A Celebration of Local Authors.

Charles L. Ballard is an author and award-winning Professor of Economics at Michigan State University. He has been a consultant to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and numerous other government agencies and research institutions, both in the United States and abroad. He has received a number of National Science Foundation grants and outstanding teaching awards.

Income inequality in the United States decreased dramatically between 1928 and 1944. This “Great Convergence” was driven primarily by changes in public policies. Many of these relatively egalitarian policies were reduced or reversed in the 1970s and 1980s. Largely as a result of these policy reversals, income inequality has increased dramatically during the “Great Divergence” of the last 40 years. Professor Ballard will discuss the economics and politics behind these changes.

This is the ninth in OLLI’S distinguished lecture series for 2018-19. A total of ten lectures will be presented covering a variety of topics. The next lecture will be June 11, 2019. The topic will be: The Constitution at the Border: When Immigration Policy and Constitutional Norms Clash.
