As many as 420,000 men were imprisoned during the American Civil War. Both Union and Confederate prisons were filthy, mismanaged, and deadly. Yet they were also places where captured soldiers thought about the meaning of the war and their role in it. This was especially the case in Union prisons for Confederate soldiers. In this talk, Williams will show how captured prisoners’ dispositions to think and reflect also led them to record their own memories. In the process, they assembled a vast, useable archive of Confederate reminiscences that have had a lasting effect on popular understandings of the Civil War to the present day.

Have you ever wondered how architecture sounds in Chinese? Or questioned if the language of architecture would sound any more esoteric if it were in Chinese? Does linguistic difference matter? What is lost and what is gained when designspeak traverses the Chinese-English divide? How does the medium of design discourse affect its content? Is graphic communication the great equalizer? Is architecture sinicizable? Do you doubt that these are answerable questions? Find out on October 3rd, 5–7pm, at the Taubman College Commons.

In 1922, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein declared that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With the globally-connected community at the University of Michigan in mind, we invite you to an exploration of the cross-cultural academic expressive production that accompanies thinking and writing from a non-English background. Taking the University of Michigan as a case study, we hope to engage questions of scholarship and public expression incubated in the globalized environment that is the contemporary American university. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of English as a Second Language or as a lingua franca, we seek a discussion around scholarly expression in a multicultural, globalized academia.

Panelists:
FU Liangyu, Communications & Media Studies
WANG Jieqiong, Architecture & Urban Studies
William THOMSON, Anthropology & Architecture
ZHANG Fang, Fine Arts, Design, & Economics

Hors d'oeuvres to be served.
All are welcome!
No registration is required but please RSVP so we can provide enough food for everyone.

This event is organized by GRIN with generous support from Rackham and in partnership with Taubman College DEI.

Dr. David J. Fitzpatrick is a professor of history at Washtenaw Community College. His research focuses on military policy and on civil-military relations in the United States during the post-Civil War era. His most recent work is Emory Upton: Misunderstood Reformer (Oklahoma University Press, 2017). Upton is well known for his exploits at Rappahannock Station (1863), at Spotsylvania (1864) and on Wilson’s Cavalry Raid (1865) during the Civil War, but he is less well known for his post-war efforts to reform the United States Army. Those efforts failed in his lifetime (he committed suicide in 1881), but they came to fruition with the Root Reforms of the early 20th Century. Dr. Fitzpatrick is also the author of several journal articles and published essays.

The event investigates the formation of the American film industry from its origins into the 1940s and beyond, paying special attention to the racially specific underpinnings of stardom, animation, and exhibition. The mini-conference's invited speakers will discuss their groundbreaking research into the complex relationships between black audiences and black performers in the classical Hollywood era, early American animation’s reliance on blackface minstrelsy, and understanding African American film exhibition before 1930 as broadcasts of racial uplift and demands to control their own visual representation on screen. During the pedagogy session, the speakers will also interrogate how research into film history and cinema-related archival collections can help University faculty and graduate student instructors foster and facilitate critical discussions of race with their students.

Dr. Lisa Budreau will be speaking on the saga of the First World War dead and the efforts of the living to honor their heroes. It’s a staggering, often-macabre tale steeped in the pathos and human drama of a democratic nation struggling to find meaning in the aftermath of this war. Dr. Budreau will unravel the complex logistical, political and social dynamics that unfolded from 1919 until the early 1930s, and explore the development of the heritage landscapes that men created in an attempt to remember the apocalypse of their era. Dr. Budreau's illustrated talk will be based on her book, Bodies of War, World War 1 and the Politics of Commemoration in America, 1919-1933.

The William L. Clements Library acquires, preserves, and provides access to primary source materials pertinent to early American History. Its curators identify projects for internships based on historical value, the physical condition of materials, and other priorities including the Clements’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategic Plan. Please join us as students and mentors discuss their recent conservation, collection description, cataloging, and digitization projects.

LS&A undergraduate student Ella Horwedel performed conservation work and created a finding aid for the Starry Family Correspondence. James H. Starry, his wife Nancy Starry, siblings, cousins, and others wrote often-candid letters about their lives in Virginia and Ohio between 1840 and 1850. They provided valuable reflections on gender relations, courtship, alcohol use and temperance, African Americans, slavery, and other subjects. Ella washed, repaired, and lined the Starrys' heavily damaged letters to make them safe for handling by researchers; and she wrote descriptive text to help scholars discover the collection for study.

Vocal music student Alexandra Brassard worked with the Graphics Division to digitize and improve catalog records for the Clements Library's illustrated sheet music collection. Although American popular music of the past includes pervasive racial caricatures and stereotypes, it is also rich with themes related to immigration, gender, spiritualism, and includes notable African American composers.

A current exhibit at the William L. Clements Library aims to present the experiences of ordinary Americans who served in France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) during the First World War. Studying hundreds of letters written by soldiers, postcards, photographs, and other diverse materials, curator Louis Miller discovered some shared themes from these firsthand accounts to explore in the exhibition. Miller’s lecture will discuss some of the exceptional and heartbreaking stories found in the Clements’ archives and present an overview of the exhibit.

Join us for the lecture at the Hatcher Graduate Library Gallery; an after-hours viewing of the exhibit at the Clements Library will follow the lecture. Visitors have the opportunity to view both paper and three-dimensional objects relating to the First World War, including a doughboy helmet, censored letters, photographs, and souvenirs. A pamphlet of excerpts from the writings of Americans who served complements the exhibit.

Louie Miller is an archivist at the University of Michigan’s William L. Clements Library. He has a Masters of Science in Information from the U-M School of Information with a specialization in archives and records management and a Bachelors in History from Kalamazoo College. It was while working on his undergraduate thesis at Kalamazoo that he was first drawn to the topic of American involvement in the First World War.

Microaggressions: Conceptual, Research, and Practice Implications (March 14, 2019 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61829 61829-15212856@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 14, 2019 3:00pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: National Center for Institutional Diversity

A resurgence of scholarly and popular attention to the concept of microaggressions has prompted new research as well as its applications, such as training and workshops on microaggressions across college campuses and other organizational and community settings. However, definitions, understandings, and measurement of this concept vary due to its inherent complexity involving interactions of contexts and individuals. This panel discussion will engage the growing body of literature on microaggressions.

Presenters are recipients of NCID’s Pop-up Grant on microaggressions and are members of the Diversity Scholars Network. These scholars take up the concept of microaggressions using various theoretical and methodological approaches. They will compare and contrast new findings to extant literatures, illuminate critical questions, and advance new theoretical/conceptual frameworks.

Presenters: Ahlam Lee (Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies at Xavier University), Cassaundra Rodriguez (Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas), and Rosalie Rolón-Dow (Associate Professor of Education at the University of Delaware)

Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: RIW: Risk, Lending, & the Future of Debtor Urbanization

Fixed Interest centers debt as a determinant of contemporary urbanization. We have assembled graduate students and leading scholars to explore the constellation of borrowing and lending and its expression in a variety of geographies, fields of practice, technologies, institutions, labor, and political ideologies. These presentations and discussions will interrogate the fringes and the FIREs (finance, insurance, and real estate) of debtor urbanization. This scholarship examines the relationship between debt and urban and neighborhood decline (in growing and shrinking cities).

Fixed Interest will include three graduate student papers and two lectures by path-breaking UM scholars relating debt to forms of urban and institutional power. Dr Rachel Weber, Professor of Urban Planning & Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will provide the closing lecture on value, property, and urban development.

What is academic freedom? Is it relevant in this day and age? What does it mean at a global institution like the University of Michigan? How does the internationalization of higher education affect it? What does it mean to those who hail from abroad? Does academic freedom globalize? How do scholars and students who move across the world attend to its intricacies, obligations, and limitations? These are some of the questions that we will attempt to answer as part of our conversation. Please join us!

The public is welcome!
Lunch will be served.
Please RSVP. This is optional but does help us ensure that we provide enough food for everyone.

The Clements Library is a treasure house of American history. During a 23-year career with the Clements, Brian Dunnigan has served as curator of maps, head of research and publications, associate director, and acting director. Daily contact with the collections has inspired reflections on some of the things that the Clements does very well, driving his exhibit themes around active collecting, conservation, solving mysteries, and more.

Dunnigan’s selections include poignant manuscripts, striking visual imagery and cartography, and some of his favorite materials from the collections, drawing especially from his expertise in the mapping of the Great Lakes. This valedictory exhibit in the Clements’s soaring Avenir Foundation Reading Room dwells on seven areas of commitment and illustrates the concepts with some of the Library's most evocative and handsome holdings.
