The Carceral Studies RIW warmly invites you to a panel and workshop exploring how we navigate the ethics of our work in carceral settings or in communities affected by the carceral state.

We invite broad, interdisciplinary discussions: How can we examine the ethics of our research, teaching, activism, and/or community engagement in a number of related fields?

Our day will consist of a morning panel featuring:
-Liat Ben-Moshe, Feminist Disability Studies Scholar and Assistant Professor of Criminology, Law and Justice at the University of Illinois, Chicago
-Aaron Suganuma, Executive Director of A Brighter Way
-Ashley Lucas, Associate Professor of Theatre & Drama and the Residential College, and Director of The Prison Creative Arts Project

After lunch, we will have breakout sessions with panelists in which attendees can continue discussions raised in the morning panel and share their own questions about navigating the ethics of their particular projects.

Poet, musician, and artist Cozine Welch will share his work before our morning panel! Breakfast and lunch will be served. Please RSVP to help us better prepare for the event.

The Clements Library is a treasure house of American history. During a 23-year career with the Clements, Brian Dunnigan has served as curator of maps, head of research and publications, associate director, and acting director. Daily contact with the collections has inspired reflections on some of the things that the Clements does very well, driving his exhibit themes around active collecting, conservation, solving mysteries, and more.

Dunnigan’s selections include poignant manuscripts, striking visual imagery and cartography, and some of his favorite materials from the collections, drawing especially from his expertise in the mapping of the Great Lakes. This valedictory exhibit in the Clements’s soaring Avenir Foundation Reading Room dwells on seven areas of commitment and illustrates the concepts with some of the Library's most evocative and handsome holdings.

The purpose of this town hall will be to discuss the findings and recommendations from the consensus report, The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education: Branches from the Same Tree, released Spring 2018 by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). The even will also facilitate discussions about strategies for the creation, evaluation, and sustainability of courses and programs that integrate across disciplines. The report represents a culmination of a two-year study conducted by a committee of National Academies members including scientists, engineers, health professionals, humanists, artists, and industry leaders. The report argues that integrating the humanities and arts with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine results in positive learning outcomes that will help students successfully enter the workforce, enrich their lives, and help them become active and informed citizens. Importantly, a range of positive educational outcomes resulted from these methods, including improved written and oral communication skills, teamwork skills, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in real-world settings.

Prof. Branka Arsic (Columbia University) will be giving a public lecture on Thursday May 30th, at 4 p.m. QA to follow.

Description: My talk starts out from remarks Melville left in his Encantadas concerning the Galapagos tortoises and goes on to examine the scientific and historical archives to which he had recourse, from Cuvier and Broderip to Porter and Delano. On that basis I seek to reconstruct exactly what, in the early 19th century, prompted scientists, doctors, and naturalists, as well as traders and ordinary seamen, to obsess about the tortoise as a life form, one that was brought to the brink of extinction by the middle of the century. I argue that the reason why both physiologists in Continental scientific laboratories, and whalers traversing Antillean waters in trade ships, chose this particular animal to answer the question of what life is, derived from their ideas about what constituted pain, suffering, and cruelty. By rehearsing such debates over the presumed expressions of suffering, apathy and indifference on the part of the tortoise, I work to suggest that what scientists understood as apathy towards pain licensed the production of a bizarre taxonomy of life forms based on a creaturely capacity to resist violence. I, therefore, pay significant attention to the differences that science advanced between biologically - as opposed to psychologically - rational and irrational life forms, which leads to my concluding analysis of why, as a consequence, the irrational was designated as available for experimentation and vivisection.

Professor Henderson will meet with graduate students in order to discuss the special challenges of doing interdisciplinary work, from doing research outside one’s field to finding publication venues and audiences.

Professor Henderson's research centers in nineteenth-century British culture. She is particularly interested in exploring formal similarities between literary arts, visual arts, and sciences. Her most recent book, Algebraic Art: Mathematical Formalism and Victorian Culture (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2018), traces the influence of mathematical formalism on Victorian literature and visual art. Other recent articles include “The Physics and Poetry of Analogy” (Victorian Studies 56:3, Spring 2014) and “Symbolic Logic and the Logic of Symbolism” (Critical Inquiry 41:1, Autumn 2014).

Professor Henderson received her PhD in English from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991. She was an Associate Professor of English at the University of Michigan from 1997-2003. Her academic distinctions include the following: Guggenheim Fellow (2012-13), ACLS Fellow (2012-13), Michigan Humanities Award (1999), Bredvold Prize (1996), and Michigan Society of Fellows (1991-1994).

Horror & Enchantment (October 11, 2019 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/65467 65467-16603594@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 11, 2019 9:00am

We are fascinated by what we fear. Misery appalls and magnetises. Creation means possibility but also beckons dissolution and catastrophe. Change – perhaps most radically projected as “conversion” – is at once an exhilarating and menacing prospect. When meanings are destabilised and predictabilities lost, experiences of opportunity and of awe jostle with feelings of anxiety and insignificance. Even love casts its shadows, turning what is intimate and familiar into the province of comfort but also dread. Revered ancestors become ghosts, dear neighbours witches. There is desire in absence, monster in treasure, chaos in awe.

A distinguished, international selection of scholars from across the humanities and social sciences gathers in Ann Arbor to explore the entwinement of horror and enchantment – amidst the intrusions and disturbances that characterised the medieval and early modern worlds – in an array of the post-colonial settings and cultural imaginations they helped to set in motion – and in a recognition of the fact that to investigate the coincidence of horror and enchantment in the past is also to inquire into ourselves, and into the volatilities and predicaments of our own times and places.

Organized By: International Youth and Students for Social Equality

Speaker: Thomas Mackaman
Assistant Professor of History, Kings College; and writer for the World Socialist Web Site

Co-author of the recent pamphlet "The New York Times' 1619 Project: A racialist falsification of US and world history" published on the World Socialist Web Site

Author of the book New Immigrants and the Radicalization of American Labor, 1914-1924

The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) in the US and its youth and student movement, the International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE), is holding a three-part series of meetings on “Race, Class and the Fight for Socialism: Perspectives for the Coming Revolution in America.”

This series is the socialist answer to the New York Times “1619 Project,” which has been accompanied by an unprecedented publicity blitz, including at schools and campuses throughout the country. The occasion they cite for the publication of this project is the 400th anniversary of the arrival of 20 African slaves at Port Comfort, Virginia.

The Times project raises the question: Is race the driving force of history, as the Times insists? Or, as Karl Marx analyzed, is it class? Is “anti-black racism … in the very DNA of this country” as the Times writes? Or is the history of the United States fundamentally the history of class struggle? As social inequality reaches record levels, is America heading toward race war or socialist revolution?

The promotion of the 1619 Project takes place under conditions of expanding class struggle internationally and a growing interest in socialism among workers and youth in the United States. Its aim is to block the development of a united movement of workers across all races by cultivating racial divisions.

These meetings will refute the historical falsifications advanced in the 1619 Project, explain their underlying political motivations and present the strategy for socialist revolution in America today.

Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Department of History

We are excited to invite you to the Global Theories of Critique's second event of the academic year, with our theme for this year being "On the Failed and Marginal," focusing on the excluded and undermined from and in Euro-American histories. Challenging these histories or going against and beyond them demands an interrogation of the space from which we think, write, and act: the university and its various arms. Following this thinking, our second event will be a workshop on "Rethinking the University: On Discipline, Excellence, and Solidarity" with Professor Reginald Jackson, to be held on Thursday, Oct. 31st, 4-6 pm, room 1014 Tisch Hall, dinner included.

Professor Jackson is an Associate Professor of Pre-modern Japanese Literature at U of M's department of Asian Languages and Cultures, and has been long committed to thinking and practicing knowledge production in relation to solidarity with the marginalized and forgotten, within both the university's own space and its many outsides. As such, ahead of this event, we recommend reading Professor Jackson's recently published article, titled "Solidarity's Indiscipline: Regarding Miyoshi's Pedagogical Legacy," along with two theoretical pieces he is in engaging with. All readings are available here, and we recommend reading them in this order:

Readings, “The Idea of Excellence”
Jackson, “Solidarity’s Indiscipline: Regarding Miyoshi's Pedagogical Legacy”
Moten and Harney, “The University and the Undercommons” (optional)

Additionally, if you plan on attending this event, please RSVP here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd9zWJXZZnlGwM1-MIwVj7GNA5DZ_vnK-KvGxWzV26Is898Vw/viewform. We would also very much appreciate circulating this invite with any student, department or anyone else who might be interested in this event.

This event and the Global Theories of Critique project are part of a partnership between the University of Michigan and the American University in Cairo (AUC) focusing on Public Humanities in the Global South supported by a Grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to AUC. Please get in touch with Hakem Al-Rustom (hakemaa@umich.edu) or Raya Naamneh (rnaamneh@umich.edu) with any questions.

Reading the Romantics (December 5, 2019 12:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68722 68722-17140909@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, December 5, 2019 12:30pm
Location: Angell Hall
Organized By: Nineteenth Century Forum

Please join us for the second discussion of our Fall 2016 reading series called Reading the Romantics.

We will meet on December 5th from 12:30-1:30pm in Angell Hall 3154 to discuss the first chapter from Tilottama Rajan's *Romantic Narratives: Shelley, Hays, Godwin, and Wollstonecraft* (2010), called “The Trauma of Lyric: Shelley’s Missed Encounter with Poetry in Alastor.”

The chapter focuses on Shelley’s Alastor and some of the Wordsworth poems that influenced it — mostly the Lucy poems and The Ruined Cottage — in order to further Rajan’s larger claim about a Romantic ’narrativity’ that is, for her, separate from the novelistic, chronological plot structure (although not always excluded from it) and characterized by a certain openness, “worklessness,” and a “constant process of unmaking” that allows Shelley and other Romantic authors to oscillate between poetry and prose.

A light vegetarian lunch will be served. Please kindly RSVP to Ani Bezirdzhyan (abezirdz@umich.edu) to receive the pre-circulated reading materials.
