The killing of George Floyd, in the wake of the horrific and obscene history of the killings of unarmed black people by the police, has focused attention like never before on the systemic anti-black racism of the criminal-legal system in the United States. To be sure, the massive expansion and militarization of policing and incarceration are in some ways of comparatively recent origin. Yet they also have a much deeper origin in, and are inextricably connected to, a longer history of the judicial and extra-judicial violence against black people in the continent. The racist inequities of the criminal-legal system, indeed, are not a bug, but a feature.

Our panel of experts, scholars of the United States at the University of Michigan, will help us explore, beyond the headlines, the reach of the long arm of the carceral state in society as well as the challenges and opportunities that have been thrown up by the contemporary protests against the systemic violence of the state. The stakes for understanding the working of the carceral state are documented by the Documenting Criminalization and Confinement project of the University of Michigan’s Carceral State Project. However, the momentous protests against anti-Black racism as well as the broad public support they have received both within the United States and across the world—the clamor heard round the world—have also created a novel opportunity for implementing and imagining futures beyond a blatantly rigged carceral framework.

• Melissa Burch, Anthropology, University of Michigan
• Matthew Countryman, Afroamerican and African History, American Culture, History, University of Michigan
• Matthew Lassiter, History, Urban and Regional Planning, University of Michigan
• William D. Lopez, Health Behavior and Health Education, University of Michigan

2020 Dewey Lecture: Building a Civic Temper (September 18, 2020 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73527 73527-18252294@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 18, 2020 8:30am

Organized By: Ginsberg Center

The Edward Ginsberg Center, in partnership with University of Michigan Museum of Art, warmly invite UM faculty, staff, students and community partners to join us for our biannual event.

The Ginsberg Center’s Dewey Series recognizes the enduring legacy of philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey, who taught at U of M in the 1890’s, and later, went on to found the New School for Social Research. Chief among Dewey’s enduring ideas were that thought is the means through which we come to understand and connect with the world around us, and, that universal education is the key to teaching people how to abandon their habits and think creatively via learning through doing.

This year's theme is inspired by William James' 1906 Essay, 'The Moral Equivalent of War.' While some of James' assertions are cause for critique, his primary observation that we need to focus on building our shared public life remains more important than ever.

Acknowledging that the events unfolding--locally and nationally--are on our minds, and after careful reflection, we have modified the agenda for this year’s Dewey Lecture. We’re breaking the event into two parts, with this Friday’s part focused on building community and engaging with one another through a facilitated discussion activity. Our planned panel will be part 2, convened later this year.

Study abroad is not just for juniors. It's not just for language and international studies majors. It's not just for students from certain communities or socioeconomic backgrounds. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you’re studying, a study abroad experience is available to you during your time at Michigan.

Whether you want to develop the skills you’ll need to compete in a global economy, cultivate your language competencies, or build meaningful connections with people from around the world, this is the best time in your life for a global experience.

Studying abroad often proves to be a pivotal experience, but deciding which program is the best fit can be daunting as you consider questions such as: How will this enhance my course of study? When should I go? For how long? Where? Can I afford it? How do I prepare? Will my credits transfer? The CGIS Study Abroad Virtual Fair is the best time to get all of your questions answered!

During the day of the virtual fair, you'll have instant access to academic advisors, education abroad advisors, Office of Financial Aid & LSA Scholarship Office representatives, and program representatives as well as scheduled events throughout the fair!

Tending our Gardens: Ethnomusicologists as Music Educators, Music Historians, and Administrators (October 16, 2020 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78400 78400-20028614@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 16, 2020 5:00pm

Prof. Timothy Rice, Distinguished Professor, Emeritus, Ethnomusicology, UCLA

It has been said that ethnomusicology is what ethnomusicologists do. Those of us who work in schools and departments of music often do many things and have multiple roles to play. As researchers, we may teach about the world's musical traditions, the musical traditions of the U.S. and the Americas, and the particular cultures, people, and genres we have researched in depth. In our roles as citizens of the university or college where we teach, we often take on other roles as performers, composers, music theorists, music educators, music historians, and administrators. In my own career these last three roles have figured most prominently. To these roles I have brought the values inherent in the discipline of ethnomusicology: advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion and opposing ethnocentrism and racism. This presentation examines my own life-long experiences in such institutions, including course and curricular innovations that express these values. Among other things, I discuss my recent attempt to move the curriculum of a school of music away from the eurocentrism at its core by becoming, in effect, a music historian. And I conclude with some reflections on why moving away from ethnocentrism to inclusion in schools of music has proven so difficult and one approach to doing so.

Timothy Rice, Distinguished Professor, Emeritus, of ethnomusicology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), has written many books and articles about the traditional music of Bulgaria and Macedonia. He also writes about theory and method in ethnomusicology, including Ethnomusicology: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2014) and Modeling Ethnomusicology (Oxford University Press, 2017). He was the editor of the journal Ethnomusicology (1981-1984); the founding co-editor of the ten-volume Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (1992-2002); and the President of the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM, 2003-2005). As the founding director of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music (2007-2013), he contributed to discussions of curricular reform at the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the College Music Society (CMS). In 2019 he was named an honorary member of the Society for Ethnomusicology for his contributions to SEM and the field of ethnomusicology.

Virtual Reality (VR) and digital fabrication technologies today are ushering in a new wave of opportunities in instrument design to bring otherwise implausible instruments to life or support virtual counterparts to irreplaceable and fragile instruments housed in museums and  collections. In the latter case, we aim to resynthesize both the sound of a rare instrument as well as the audio visual experience of playing it in a virtual space. The Stearns Instrument Collection at the University of Michigan has served as an invaluable resource for this research. In this seminar I will discuss electrophones of interest in the collection that give rise to persisting issues of interaction design as well as research conducted with Dr. Anıl Çamcı (Performing Arts Technology, SMTD) where instruments in the collection are scanned and modeled for virtual interaction.

The Biophysics Virtual Seminar Series presents:

Dr. Katrin Heinze - Rudolf Virchow Center for Integrative and

*“Boosting high-resolution fluorescence by tunable nano-coatings"*

ABSTRACT: The “Resolution Revolution" in fluorescence microscopy over the last decades has given rise to a variety of techniques that allow imaging beyond the diffraction limit with resolution up to the nanometer range. One particularly powerful technique is direct stochastic optical
reconstruction microscopy (dSTORM), a widely-used type of single molecule localization microscopy (SMLM), which is based on the temporal separation of the emission of individual fluorophores
and subsequent localization analysis. This eventually allows to reconstruct a super-resolved image revealing details down to typically 20 nm in a cellular setting. The key point here is the achievable localization precision, which mainly depends on the image contrast generated by the individual fluorophore’s emission. We found that reflective metal-dielectric nano-coatings represent a tunable nanomirror that can do both quenching and boosting fluorescence for high-contrast imaging on the nanoscale. Such mirror-enhanced fluorescence is very different from other surface effects based on total internal reflection microscopy or optoplasmonics. While surface-plasmon supported fluorescence methods provide much higher enhancement factors, mirror-enhanced approaches are more versatile and thus highly suitable for modern bio-imaging. The resolution improvement achieved with such mirror-enhanced STORM (meSTORM) is both spectrally and spatially tunable and thus allows for dual-color approaches on the one hand, and selectively highlighting region above the cover glass on the other hand. Even if the resulting resolution boost is based on a near-field effect and thus restricted to imaging near surfaces, a large variety of membrane fluorescence approaches even beyond SMLM benefit. Thus, live-cell
Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy and Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer are as well perfect candidates to be pushed to the next level.

Musicology Lecture: National Anthems: Signifiers of Dominance and Oppression (February 5, 2021 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81218 81218-20873992@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 5, 2021 5:00pm

On Jan 6, 2021, insurrectionists sang the Star Spangled Banner and waved the confederate flag while violently invading The Capitol. Contrast this with moments in 2016, when African American NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick  knelt quietly and peacefully during the Star-Spangled Banner. These gestures, both related to the National anthem, varied widely in action, perception, and meaning. These differences, rooted in the racial and racist history of the United States, draw attention to the very notion of a national anthem. Long before Kaepernick, Black folks in the United States have been questioning this song that was written by a slave-holding anti-abolitionist. These same questions should apply in African countries as well. How have national anthems been used to reinforce or dilute national pride in African countries.  Often these songs are sonic reflections of the colonized past, a great irony given the troubled relationships between these countries and their colonial “masters.” This presentation explores the complex relationship between official national anthems and black folks, and considers alternative songs that Africans and African Americans have embraced as a way of authoring their own sense of national identity and challenging enduring systems of oppression.

Her talk, “Treasures of Religious Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts,” is sponsored by the Michigan Center for Early Christian Studies (MCECS), the Department of Middle East Studies, and the Medieval and Early Modern Studies Program of the University of Michigan.

The presentation focuses upon the diverse and ever-changing interpretations of Christ and his mother Mary from the 13th through the 17th c. in Italy, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Selected works will be discussed in terms of their meaning and cultural context, including Catholic and Protestant controversies. Also of interest are the varied techniques in wood, marble, gold, and paint, as well as issues of museum display. In many cases an attempt will be made to “reconstruct” the original functions of these works created for ecclesiastical and domestic settings.

*How much does your university contribute to policing? How much does policing rely on your university? Who does it police? Where does it police?*

If you don’t have answers to these questions, you probably want them. We want them too.

Do you think it’s important for students to know how to find answers to these questions? Do you think it’s important for communities to find answers to them when police have jurisdiction that goes beyond the university campus?

The Cops Off Campus research project is a way of collecting this data to instigate a larger public conversation about the relations between universities and policing. We are looking to help instructors, students, organizers, and communities to ask questions about how much money and how many other resources universities devote to policing and what the effects are. We invite folks to participate in a project to collect data about university/police relationships with the goal of kicking cops off campuses and abolishing policing. We are excited to collaborate with members of the University of Michigan community toward these ends.

Orientalism and the Erasure of Arab Women Poets: Reinscribing Gender in Medieval Adab Culture

Arabic manuscripts in world archives transmit the speeches and poetry of women from pre-Islamic times to the modern era, citing at least 400 named women. Gendered eloquence (Balāghāt al-Nisāʾ) was a widely recognized category of verbal art in adab-humanities, from the ninth century onward. Thousands of texts document a Shahrazadian (logo-centric) counter-culture resistant to ossified patriarchal authority in pre-Islamic and medieval Arabo-Islamic societies. Over the past five centuries, though, oriental studies has taken little notice of the phenomenon and modern print sources have hardly done justice to the legacy of women’s verbal art. Western scholarship has in effect muted Arab women poets for centuries, with the attendant risks of permanent extinction of an intangible world heritage. How and why did this erasure happen? This talk shifts frame between the contemporary and the premodern, between the ghosts of orientalist scholarship and the legacy of premodern Arab women demanding to be heard and remembered once again.

This Zoom session of the Premodern Colloquium will run at 2:00PM to accommodate time differences.

This paper poses questions about the hierarchies and genres implicit or explicit in present day writing about Gothic art and architecture. A useful starting point is Eric Auerbach's work on mimesis and realism. Auerbach's brilliant literary insights into sermo humilis and the Judeo-Christian rejection of the ancient orders and hierarchies of rhetoric raise important objections. The first is that complex works of literature and art can seldom be pinned down just to one rhetorical mode or level of style. Rhetoric was not a single philosophy or body of knowledge to be adopted or repudiated, but a set of practices that varied ad usum, according to need and occasion.

Here I propose that the medieval Christian dispensation adhered to all the genera dicendi and rhetorical modes, and this opinion is tested with particular regard to epideictic or 'display' rhetoric and its relationship to 'realism'. It was Roland Barthes who noted that the 'reality effect' stemmed in part from epideisis or 'beautiful description'. This seems to offer an alternative route to realism (in so far as we can think causally about this matter) to the frank low speech often identified as sermo humilis. Praise and great speech are also discussed here with a view to understanding the ways that, morally and metaphysically, the canonical monuments of realism in Gothic Europe aimed not to diminish their subjects through naked displays of power, but to involve them in a rhetorical discourse of magnification whose aims were fundamentally political and social.

Finally, how can we recapture the great speech of medieval art without taking recourse to post-medieval notions of the Sublime? And to what extent can such great speech be theorized historically?

Family Archives and Female Spaces of Intimacy in Early Modern Isfahan

In seventeenth-century Isfahan, the authorship of anthologies was a male prerogative. This talk wonders about women who have been excluded from the act of writing their own anthology to consider gendered literacy and female friendship through an anthology collected in the library of the Urdubadi family of bureaucrats and poets. The decisive role of a female family member, the Urdubadi widow, whose pilgrimage to Mecca is recorded in this anthology, divulges her love for a female companion who was forced to leave Isfahan due to rumors circulating about their friendship. How are we to interpret this inclusion? Reading this family history as an archive, we will see how anthologies document social and affective bonds with kin and with friends, acts that make the city legible for us and for themselves.

Humans and Monsters in Early Medieval Literature

Monsters function as social markers of the feasible and plausible. In dissonance to mainstream social constructs, they make people uncomfortable and help them project their fears and anxieties. My work seeks to understand the permanence and fluidity of monstrosity in its physical and psychological perceptions and representations in early medieval literature, taking as samples Beowulf, the Wonders of the East, and the Aberdeen Bestiary.

I argue that while monstrosity is inherent to the monstrous individual, it might have been perceived as permanent but also as changing. For instance, dragons, whose monstrosity is embedded in their physicality and inextricable from it, bear their monstrosity permanently; however, Beowulf, the hero, bears a fluid monstrosity since he displays chivalrous traits when not in combat while assuming a monstrous nature when acquiring colossal – non-human – strength to overpower Grendel. Through this fluctuation, I try to understand the relationship between humans and monsters, and also the capacity of humans to harbor monstrosity.
