Not Separate from the Street: Nancy Blum and Public Art Installation (October 19, 2018 4:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/54327 54327-13572279@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 19, 2018 4:30pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

The Robertson Lecture is an endowed annual event of the LSA Residential College, and is a lasting gift of the first Dean of the RC, James Robertson. The lecturer is traditionally a notable alumna/us of the RC, someone impacting their chosen field(s) in ways congruent with the philosophy of the College. The 2018 Robertson Lecture will be delivered at the Keene Theater in East Quadrangle on October 19th by Nancy Blum, class of '85, a Brooklyn-based artist who is known for her public art commissions and works on paper. In addition to graduating from the RC with majors in Psychology and Women’s Studies, she received an MSW from the U-M School of Social work and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her current work is installed primarily out of the gallery, not separated from the street but integrated into it, with a particular interest in sites of transit in cities and within hospital settings. Her recent commissions include medicinal wildflower windows at the San Francisco General Hospital acute care unit; large, graceful birds in flights of migration/immigration integrated into three light-rail stations in Minneapolis/St. Paul; and over-sized yellow flower sculptures sprouting from a rainwater filtration green space at a bus loop outside Philadelphia.

In her Robertson lecture, Nancy will share anecdotes about these and other works, and take us behind the scenes of her in-progress installation at an MTA train station in NYC. She'll explore how her multiple interests take root in public art, and she'll give us a sense for how she forged her own path as an artist - a journey, she says, that began at the Residential College, notably thanks to mentoring from her ceramics professor, Susan Crowell.

Following the Lecture, please join us for a reception for the artist at the RC Art Gallery, located on the first floor of East Quadrangle. Refreshments will be served. An exhibit of Nancy's drawings will be on display at the same gallery through November 9th, (M-F 10am-5pm, free admission).

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

This October, the Institute for the Humanities is shutting down Liberty Street near U-M campus. We’re going to reuse thousands of discarded books, turning them into an illuminated pathway for “Literature vs. Traffic,” a large-scale art installation by Spanish undercover art collective Luzinterruptus.

Ann Arbor joins Toronto, New York, and Melbourne, as we feature--for one night only--the brilliance of 10,000 books and thousands of LED lights. What was just a street will become a beautiful installation, as we bring the power of art, education, the written word, and free thought to the entire Ann Arbor community by essentially “paving” Liberty St. with thousands of glowing books.

This is a grass-roots project and your participation is essential!

Want to play a part in this amazing campus and community-wide project? We need:

Volunteers: Community and campus groups and individuals to volunteer to work with the artists to prep & attach lights to books (Oct 15-23). Sign up to volunteer here: http://myumi.ch/6jW5V

Visitors: Come view the extraordinary installation, and help us extend the life of a book by taking some books home (Oct. 23 5-11pm, books can be taken home after 8pm).

Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

As the colonial past is increasingly being incorporated into national and transnational histories, some museums have positioned themselves as public facilitators of the labor of mourning, of empathetic listening, and of rehearsing postcolonial conviviality. The presentation looks at recent exhibitions in German and European museums, to examine how curators set struggles over racial inclusion and equality within longer histories of violence. How do these exhibitions approach the challenge of decolonizing national and European histories?

Katrin Sieg is Graf Goltz Professor and Director of the BMW Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown University, where she is jointly affiliated with the German department. The author of three scholarly monographs, she has published across the fields of German, European, and Theater/Performance studies. Her research intersects with feminist, postcolonial, and critical race studies. She has received several awards and grants, among them two awards for her second book, Ethnic Drag: Performing Race, Nation, Sexuality in West Germany (2002). A fourth book, Decolonizing German and European History at the Museum, is under contract with the University of Michigan Press.

Sustainability and Development Conference (November 9, 2018 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/52746 52746-12993422@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 9, 2018 10:00am
Location: Dana Natural Resources Building
Organized By: School for Environment and Sustainability

Sustainable development, as a concept and call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and guarantee human well-being, is perhaps the greatest challenge facing humanity. The complexity of the meanings of sustainable development have meant that many scholars, researchers, decision makers, and practitioners see in it diverse ways in which to aspire for and achieve societal goals. Scholarly research, student training, and new opportunities for meaningful change continue to increase, especially with the United Nations-sponsored Sustainable Development Goals finding traction with governments and NGOs alike.
In collaboration with the journal World Development, this international conference on Sustainability and Development seeks to bring together a diverse and interdisciplinary constituency to engage with the best approaches and means to implement the Sustainable Development Goals and assess progress towards them.

We welcome abstracts for oral presentations, lightning talks, panel sessions, posters, and workshops. Abstracts must address a conference theme and follow the abstract guidelines. The submission of full papers (from those whose abstracts are accepted) will be strongly encouraged, and the best 25 papers will be published as a special issue.

We are also accepting applications for financial assistance for students and scholars from lower-income countries.

Submissions are due July 15, 2018.

Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

The Wallenberg Medal and Lecture program honors Raoul Wallenberg who graduated from U-M’s College of Architecture in 1935. In 1944, at the request of Jewish organizations and the American War Refugee Board, the Swedish Foreign Ministry sent Wallenberg on a rescue mission to Budapest. Over the course of six months, Wallenberg issued thousands of protective passports and placed many thousands of Jews in safe houses throughout the besieged city. He confronted Hungarian and German forces to secure the release of Jews, whom he claimed were under Swedish protection, and saved more than 80,000 lives.

U-M awards the Wallenberg Medal annually to those who, through actions and personal commitment, perpetuate Wallenberg’s own extraordinary accomplishments and human values, and demonstrate the capacity of the human spirit to stand up for the helpless, to defend the integrity of the powerless, and to speak out on behalf of the voiceless. The Wallenberg Medalists, through their actions and values, demonstrate that one person, individually or collectively, can make a difference in the struggle for a better world.

B.R.A.V.E. is an organization of youth activists sponsored by the faith community of Saint Sabina Church on Chicago’s South Side. The group’s mission is to prevent violence and to cultivate leadership for social justice. Rie’Onna Holmon is B.R.A.V.E.’s current president, and Ke’Shon Newman, whose brother was shot and killed while walking his girlfriend home from a bus stop, is a leading activist.

March For Our Lives was formed after the February 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, as a movement dedicated to student-led activism around ending gun violence and the epidemic of mass shootings in schools. Alex Wind and Sofie Whitney are founding members of the organization and leaders committed to serving as voices for those who have been silenced.

Tickets are free but required for entry and will be available on October 1 at wallenberg.eventbrite.com. They are general admission and seating is on a first come, first serve basis. Once the Rackham Auditorium is at capacity, guests will be directed to the Amphitheatre on the fourth floor of the Rackham Building.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: CEW+

Explore the rapid transformation in gender consciousness and gender relations during this workshop with Dr. Pamela Aronson. Attendees will discuss changes stemming from three primary sources: the rise of women running for political office in 2018, the emergence of new social movement activism, and the creation of the “#MeToo” movement, which has sparked a new public discourse on sexual assault and harassment. While exploring the ways that this new consciousness has also faced backlash and opposition, this workshop will shed light on the emerging gender revolution by examining how rapid transformations are influencing everyday relationships between men and women. A hands-on wellness activity will be presented by the CEW+ Inspire team to complement this workshop. The discussion will be followed by a networking reception.

Free and open to the public. Please register by November 8th.

About the Presenter: Pamela Aronson is Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Her research examines how inequalities impact identities and the life course. Past research has considered young women’s transition to adulthood, perception of role models, work and family orientations, and attitudes toward feminism. She also studies class and gender differences in the experience of postsecondary education and career development. Gender and feminist consciousness, as well as the impact of internalized misogyny in electoral politics, are the focus of her new research project.

A 30 min. talk by Youngju Ryu, 2018-19 Institute for the Humanities Hunting Family Fellow and associate professor of modern Korean literature) followed by Q & A.

"South Korea just showed the world how to do democracy," reported The Washington Post on May 10, 2017, a day after Koreans voted a new president into office following the impeachment of Park Geun-hye. Officially dubbed the "Candlelight Revolution," the peaceful transfer of power was a result of massive street demonstrations, which in turn highlighted the role of new media such as the podcast. Ideally suited to the era of smartphones, podcast fell through the cracks in the regulatory framework of South Korean media environment, and allowed the public to access information and news stories that had been quashed in mainstream terrestrial, cable, and paper news media. The podcast also became the venue for innovating political idiom in irreverent and parodic ways, and for bringing politics into the realm of pop culture in a widespread phenomenon that came to be known as “poli-tainment” (politics + entertainment). As part of ongoing work on cultural politics of resistance and democratization, the talk will address how the podcast boom sparked the carnivalesque rebirth of protest culture at the heart of South Korea's latest struggle for democracy.

Honors Students: Engagement Point Opportunity! Attend the Global Citizenship in Practice conference on 12/1 and earn one point. Present a poster and earn two!

Global citizenship is a popular idea among many of us, yet we do not always conceptualize or actualize it in the same ways. Some argue we are all global citizens by virtue of our increasing interconnectedness with other people and cultures. Others identify as global citizens because of a sense of collective responsibility over a shared future worldwide, a responsibility which must be actively incorporated into daily life. Further complicating this notion is the question of access: who has the knowledge, resources, and power to claim global citizenship as an identity and to make decisions affecting global change?

Global Citizenship in Practice is an opportunity to share interdisciplinary approaches to global citizenship, with emphasis on how we put this idea into practice.

**Register to attend (free) by November 18**

Want to share your approach to global citizenship?

**Propose a poster or concurrent session
Priority deadline: November 11**
Do you have global justice-related research to share or an internship story to tell? Are you involved in an organization that exemplifies effective global citizenship? You've received a grade on that excellent paper; now would you like to share it with a wider audience? We welcome a variety of submissions: traditional presentations, discussions, facilitated activities, art installations, and even performances.

Some questions to explore include:

What are the philosophical and legal challenges to defining global citizenship, a notion that implies both rights and responsibilities?

What values are we attempting to communicate when we claim to be a "citizen of the world"?

How do current issues (e.g., world trade, immigration, resource disparities) inform or complicate the notion of global citizenship?

What are examples of how members of our own campus practice global citizenship across disciplines, through scholarship and service?

How can we, as individuals, better understand the global effects of our current habits and behaviors, and what positive changes can we bring to our own practice of global citizenship?

The Department of Education proposed new regulations on Title IX and campus sexual violence. You can read them here: https://bit.ly/2A4POhD.

The Department of Education solicits public input on their proposed regulations (it's called a “notice and comment” period). The Department is required to respond to this input before issuing its final regulations. A court can strike down a regulation if the Department cannot explain its reasoning, or if the regulation is inconsistent with Title IX.

Join students and professors as we mobilize and write responses to the Department of Education's new sexual violence regulations, and make our voices heard. Dinner and event support will be provided by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

Organized By: Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.” -- Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Nobel Peace Prize, 1964)

The legacy of MLK not only demands justice at home, but justice abroad -- dignity, socio-economic equality, and human rights globally. The world's threats were characterized by him as the “triple giant evils” of racism, poverty, and militarism. How does that legacy inform the quest for justice in Israel/Palestine today?

The CMENAS Teach-In Town Hall will explore the implications of MLK's message as it pertains to a particular protest strategy: the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement in solidarity with Palestinian and Israeli nonviolent activists. More than 100 artists and musicians, in addition to 37 Jewish groups in 15 countries, have joined the BDS movement to protest state structures of oppression in Israel deemed "apartheid" by many thinkers and activists, including Nobel Peace Laureates, Jimmy Carter and Desmond Tutu.

CMENAS hosts three BDS experts to discuss MLK's legacy in the Middle East, including activists Cindy and Craig Corrie (Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice) and Prof. David Palumbo-Liu (Stanford University). After their brief presentations, an open exchange will unfold with Q & A and discussion in a Town Hall format.

A luncheon reception will follow the event. Everyone welcome!

Funded by CMENAS Endowment, International Institute, Arab & Muslim American Studies, International Studies (U-M Library), Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar, the Departments of American Culture, Sociology, Afroamerican and African Studies, Women’s Studies, Anthropology, and the Humanities Institute.

Mass Incarceration: A WeListen Staff Discussion

This session of WeListen is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome and lunch will be provided!

RSVP here: http://myumi.ch/6wE9n

The U.S. has the most incarcerated people in the world: 2.1 million. The corrections system costs $81B annually, while corporations make $7.4B from private prisons and $2B+ from prison labor. Black and Hispanic Americans are overrepresented in U.S. prisons and 83% of formerly incarcerated people are rearrested within 9 years of release.

Is mass incarceration working? Why are racial minorities overrepresented? Should the U.S. consider different sentencing and correctional models? Has privatization in our justice system gone too far, or not far enough?

Join us at this WeListen Staff Session to learn about mass incarceration and to participate in small group discussions about this complex topic. Our aim is to bring liberals, conservatives, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic
- Practice discussing difficult topics with others,
- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives,
- Learn to productively challenge an idea, and
- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.

Questions? Email us at welistenstaff@umich.edu.

This event is co-sponsored by the UM Office of DEI and the LSA DEI Implementation Leads. The planning committee includes staff members from the Ginsberg Center, the LSA Dean's Office, and LSA Psychology.

CSEAS Friday Lecture Series. Photographic Mourning: Witnessing the Philippine Drug War (January 25, 2019 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/58252 58252-14450642@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 25, 2019 11:30am
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

Under the regime of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte, the so-called drug war in the Philippines has exacted an enormous toll. In this talk, I inquire into one of the earliest and most graphic responses to this war: the work of photojournalists. How does photojournalism become a kind of advocacy by becoming a mode of mourning? How are trauma and witnessing braided together in the experience of photographers covering war? Indeed, how does photography offer evidence that trauma can be the site for the emergence of truth? What is the role of the camera and what are the ambivalent effects of the technical and aesthetic imaging of the dead and their survivors? What is the fate of photographic images once they travel beyond the control of photographers? For example, converted into commodities, what happens to them when they circulate in the global mediascape and are rendered into items for the daily consumption of anonymous viewers? And among the family of victims, how do dreams recapitulate as they displace the work of photographic mourning?

“Good Intentions: Is Art an Effective Means of Activism?” & Opening Reception (January 25, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/58130 58130-14426852@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 25, 2019 4:00pm
Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Join us for light refreshments and conversation as artist David Opdyke, journalist Lauren Sandler, art historian Tara Ward, and arts curator Amanda Krugliak explore the power, or lack thereof, of art to address politically urgent issues and the effectiveness of socially driven art.

About "Paved with Good Intentions," David Opdyke's exhibition at the Institute for the Humanities through Feb. 26:

In keeping with artist David Opdyke’s previous work, this site-specific installation serves as a critique of U.S. culture and politics. In an era of fake news and daily hyperbole, Opdyke literally changes the picture by hand painting on 528 vintage postcards of well-known American landmarks and destinations. The postcards are assembled into a large mural--a vast gridded landscape beset by environmental chaos. Each card is placed to fit into the overall image, and carefully modified with the gouache to show a realistically rendered piece of the overall turmoil.

The installation also features animated shorts and script-driven video, which take place within the visual confines of one or more postcards. The animation is inspired, in part, by Terry Gilliam’s animation work on Monty Python’s "Flying Circus" and by the classical music sound effects in the Road Runner cartoons.

About David Opdyke:
David Opdyke is a draughtsman, sculptor, and animator known for his trenchant political send-ups of American culture. Born in Schenectady, NY in 1969, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting and sculpture. His work is informed by the massive industrial and corporate restructuring he witnessed growing up, namely the abandonment of the city center by manufacturing giants General Electric and ALCO. As GE shifted resources to neighboring Niskayuna, the disparities became hard for Opdyke to ignore. Massive, decaying factories, an empty interstate loop, and unemployment were downtown; new streets, expensive homes, sushi and shopping malls were in the suburbs.

For 20 years Opdyke worked as a scenic painter and architectural model-maker. Ranging from intricate miniature constructions to room-sized installations, his artwork explores globalization, consumerism, and civilization’s abusive relationship with the environment.

This project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

Organized By: Michigan Law Environmental and Energy Law Program

The Trump administration has drastically changed how federal environmental policy is shaped and implemented. Beyond this obvious headline, there are much bigger trends that will influence the environment and economy in the years ahead. Mr. Parker will discuss where the real action and opportunity will be in this space in the coming years.

This lecture is free and open to the public.

Doug Parker is a recognized leader in environmental risk and compliance who advises clients on environmental policy, public sector strategies, enforcement actions and crisis management.

At E&W Strategies, he serves clients by providing strategic direction in the areas of corporate and individual risk, crisis mitigation and environmental compliance. He brings a unique perspective to his role as the former Director of EPA's Criminal Investigation Division where he oversaw matters ranging from the investigation into the Deepwater Horizon disaster to the Volkswagen emissions cheating scandal.

Mr. Parker counsels clients on navigating environmental, health and safety compliance challenges across multiple industries, including the automotive, energy, chemical, utility and manufacturing sectors. He also provides guidance to law firms, consulting firms, and financial entities that are managing compliance matters or are engaged in due diligence with environmental risk implications. Additionally, Mr. Parker serves as a subject matter expert for those seeking to understand and navigate the environmental and natural resource policy space or who may be advocating at the federal level on critical policy and enforcement issues.

Mr. Parker speaks regularly to industry groups on strategies for navigating environmental risk and has shared his insights on CNN, National Public Radio, as well as in The New York Times and numerous other media outlets.

The rise of capitalism after 1450 marked a turning point in the history of humanity’s relation with the rest of nature. It was greater than any watershed since the rise of agriculture and the first cities. And in relational terms, it was greater than the rise of the steam engine. These historical questions have assumed new salience in an era of runaway global warming and the Anthropocene narrative, which seeks to explain the origins and prime movers behind such deepening planetary instability. In this talk, environmental historian Jason W. Moore explains why and how the early modern origins of capitalism – understood as a world-ecology of power, capital, and nature – have shaped the crises of the 21st century.

The MIW program offers an opportunity each year for 45-50 undergraduates from any major to spend a semester (Fall or Winter) in Washington D.C. Students combine coursework with an internship that reflects their particular area of interest (such as American politics, international studies, history, the arts, public health, economics, the media, the environment, science and technology). The semester in Washington is action packed. Students work four days a week, attend an elective one evening a week and a research course on Friday mornings. They spend their weekends exploring the city and taking in cultural events. Most leave Washington longing to return.

Students are free to pursue internships of their own choosing. They are coached in internship searching strategies as part of a prep class that is taken the semester before going to D.C. Students have interned at the White House, the Smithsonian, CNN, Greenpeace, CBS, Public Defender’s Service, Washington Institute for Near East Policy, NAACP, The Brookings Institution, American Enterprise Institute, National Defense University, Partnership for Public Service, Center for American Progress, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and many others.
FUNDING is available for this living and learning program.

The Council of Global Student Organizations is a new international council at the University of Michigan which is focused on connecting all student organizations that travel internationally in order to network, learn best practices, and access resources.

CGSO was created because we recognized that many SSO's lack formal training and support from the University of Michigan so we wanted to create a space where all participating organizations can learn the skills to ensure that their initiatives abroad are collaborative and as impactful as possible.

Our first council meeting will be on Wednesday, February 6th at 6pm in room B1580 in Blau Hall. Please register to attend using this link: tinyurl.com/joincgso.

At our first meeting you will learn how your org can be apart of a collaborative council on how to responsibly engage with international communities. Enhance your cultural humility and awareness so your project can have a positive impact. Network with others who share your passion for international community engagement and leadership, and learn how these skills can directly translate to your career.

For more information please check out our website (tinyurl.com/cgsoumich), Facebook page (tinyurl.com/cgsoumichfb) or send us an email (contact-cgso@umich.com).

How innovative business models can make a positive social impact by improving access to quality medicines for women regardless of where they live, their insurance status, or whether they can pay will be the topic for the Feb. 12 WDI Global Impact Speaker Series. Sally Stephens, chief business officer of Medicines 360, will discuss the organization's global focus and how it is driven to meet an unmet need for women around the world, including in the U.S. That is, affordable, long-acting contraceptives. Medicines360 has the only nonprofit pharmaceutical company with a marketed product in the U.S. Its first product is a hormonal intrauterine device, or IUD, which had been out of reach for many women because of the high cost of the sole brand on the market. Medicines360 offers its FDA-approved Liletta at a discounted price to public sector clinics across the U.S. to increase access to this important family-planning product. Additionally, Medicines360 has been working with international health organizations to offer the product, branded as Avibela in low- and middle-income countries, to also increase access to these markets. Avibela was launched in Madagascar in 2018. Sales of Liletta in the U.S. help fund research and development efforts by the company to bring contraceptives to countries such as Madagascar. Stephens will discuss the history of Medicines360, its successes and its plans to expand access to its affordable medicines and products for women.

The nonprofit sector is in a time of generational change. The U.S. baby boomer population has comprised the majority of board leadership roles across the country, but as they leave these positions, there is a significant challenge (and opportunity) for nonprofits to recruit the next generation of nonprofit board leaders. Currently, individuals under the age of 40 make up less than 17% of nonprofit board positions. To reduce this gap, nonprofits will need to employ a number of strategies to recruit and retain younger members.

Panelists will discuss the value of a younger perspective on nonprofit boards and the efforts in place to adapt to this generational shift.

This event is free and open to the public. Food will be served.

This event is free and open to the public.

Sean Donahue, of Donahue, Goldberg & Weaver, LLP, a small DC-based firm whose practice focuses on representing environmental organizations in Clean Air Act and federal climate litigation, as well as cases involving state climate and clean energy initiatives. Donahue will discuss some of the major Trump Administration deregulatory actions in which he and his colleagues are involved: proposed repeal of Clean Power Plan and revision of carbon dioxide standards for new power plants; rollbacks of greenhouse gas emissions standards and fuel economy standards for motor vehicles and withdrawal of California’s authority to adopt and enforce separate greenhouse gas standards, and EPA’s proposed finding that Clean Air Act that regulation of mercury and other hazardous air pollutants from power plants is not appropriate or necessary. Donahue will address recurring legal issues and practical challenges involved in litigating such cases, some cross-cutting features of the Trump Administration’s deregulatory efforts in the environmental area, and what to look for as the Administration’s major initiatives move from agency rulemaking to the courts. While dealing with complex administrative law questions and daunting health and environmental hazards, the talk may be punctuated by moments of uplifting humor and cautious optimism.

At the workshop, participants will learn from faculty experts about best practices for respectful international engagement, have the opportunity to share what they have learned from their previous experiences abroad, and receive resources to help them during their time overseas.

In addition, we will also be addressing how one can navigate their social identities abroad and how to anticipate varying social systems in order to best prepare you for your time abroad.

This workshop will also ensure that you and your organization gain the tools to establish that your initiative is successful in creating mutually-equitable partnerships with the international communities that you are interacting with.

Free dinner will be provided to all participants!

Two days after the 2016 elections, 27-year-old Katie Fahey, a political novice, posted on Facebook, “I’d like to take on gerrymandering in Michigan. If you’re interested in doing this as well please let me know. {smiley face emoji}.” What began as a Facebook group, turned into an army of volunteers in a matter of weeks. The massive nonpartisan citizen campaign, now named Voters Not Politicians, gathered over 400,000 signatures to put redistricting reform on the Michigan ballot. The ballot initiative sought to create an independent commission to determine voting districts in Michigan. Michigan voters overwhelmingly approved the ballot measure in November 2018. The success of Fahey’s campaign has made it a model for anti-gerrymandering campaigns—and citizen organizing—across the nation. As Tina Rosenberg wrote in the New York Times, “If you doubt that a private citizen can make a difference, meet Fahey.”

Constraints and Conventions in African Assortative Mating (February 25, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61496 61496-15117151@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 25, 2019 12:00pm

Educational attainment is a central determinant of social positioning in African society, particularly as schooling has spread across the continent. When the educational composition of a population changes, longstanding systems of social stratification are transformed, including intra-marital assortative norms. The relative scarcity or abundance of a given credential influences marital sorting processes in two ways: by altering the composition of the population and by reconfiguring cultural conventions and gendered valuations of status. Using DHS data representing 32 sub-Saharan African countries and five decades of birth cohorts, we examine the prevalence and propensity of educational assortative outcomes as a function of educational access (the percentage of a cohort who ever attended school) and wife's educational attainment. We demonstrate that educational expansion created gendered changes in educational compositions, which led to increased prevalence of hypergamy (wives who married "up") in most countries, despite a growing aversion to hypergamy in nearly all countries and across all educational groups.

BIO:

Margaret Frye's research investigates the complex and often misaligned relationships between culture, ideas, and demographic patterns. Much of our shared culture is about what people do during key life junctures—finishing school, getting married, having a child, starting a career—but our beliefs, ideals, and expectations are imperfect reflections of these demographic regularities. Frye uses a diverse set of both qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate these questions. Her research is primarily located in sub-Saharan Africa, and she is currently in the midst of a longitudinal data collection project in Kampala, Uganda, examining changing understandings of status resulting from Uganda’s simultaneous expansion of university education and contraction of formal employment opportunities. Her research has been published in journals including the American Sociological Review, American Journal of sociology, Demography, and Population and Development Review.

Each new genetic test or medical app generates or collects more and more detailed health data, but may also raise serious issues for medicine, public health. Under what circumstances should a test be used, and how should it be implemented? Should people be allowed to choose or refuse a test, or should it be mandatory, as newborn screening is in some states? How should the data from these tests be used, and should individuals control access to the results of their tests? If test results are released to third parties, such as employers or insurers, what protections should be in place to protect individuals from unfair treatment based on test results, data collected, or genotype?

This Dissonance series event will take a multi-disciplinary look at these issues from a variety of theoretical and applied perspectives.

Panelists will include:
- Lori Andrews, Professor of Law and Director of the Institute for Science, Law and, Technology at Chicago Kent Law School

- Jodyn Platt, Assistant Professor, U-M Medical School

Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit (February 27, 2019 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/61069 61069-15027198@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 27, 2019 9:00am

Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit is a traveling exhibit designed to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities through respect for others, comfort during interactions, and awareness of disability issues. Using a multi-media approach to demonstrate respect, comfort and awareness, the
exhibit offers suggestions for becoming disability allies and educators.

It has been twenty years since the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and almost forty years since the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Both of these laws protect against discrimination of people with disabilities by requiring equal access to employment, education, goods and services.

Americans have progressed in their attitudes and behaviors toward people with disabilities; however, there remain questions and concerns about appropriate communication, comfort level, and inclusive practices.

When it comes to interacting with individuals with disabilities, people ask:
"What should I do?", "How should I respond?", "Is it okay to say that?", "How can I become an ally?"; Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit will attempt to answer some of these questions.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to experience The Ability Exhibit when it visits the Institute for Social Research (426 Thompson St.)

Food for Thought: How two local leaders cultivated mindful careers in the specialty food and food bank sector

Paul Saginaw, Partner, and Co-Founder of Zingerman’s Community of Businesses and Food Gatherers
Eileen Spring, President/CEO of Food Gatherers

In 1988 and a few days before Thanksgiving, Food Gatherers became Michigan’s first food rescue program and the first program of its kind to be founded by a small local business, Zingerman’s Delicatessen. Today, co-founder Paul Saginaw is a partner to the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses powered by nearly 600 people in ten different businesses with nearly $60M in annual sales. Eileen Spring, who has been in her role for 24 years, has worked to meet rising levels of food insecurity with a staff of 30 people, more than 7,000 volunteers who deliver 6.5 M pounds of food to people struggling with food insecurity in Washtenaw County. Join us to hear from these two respected local leaders from different sectors but with a singular purpose to provide food to people with excellent service, dignity, and purpose.

What is Socialism and How To Fight For It (February 28, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61578 61578-15137088@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 28, 2019 7:00pm

President Donald Trump’s fascist tirades against socialism show the ruling class fears the specter of revolution. “The twilight hour of socialism has arrived in our hemisphere,” Trump declared on February 18.

It is not socialism’s “twilight hour,” but rather its resurgence.

Socialism is becoming increasingly popular, but many are asking themselves: what is socialism?
The capitalist media presents Democratic Party politicians like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as “socialists.” But these members of the pro-capitalist Democratic Party do not call for mass strikes, the expropriation of the wealth of the rich, the nationalization of the corporations, the ending of all US wars and military involvement abroad, and the opening of the borders to give immigrants the right to travel freely.

Challenging the power of the financial aristocracy requires the revolutionary overthrow of the capitalist system. The fight for genuine social equality requires mobilizing the social power of the billions-strong international working class in a united movement for socialism.
The coming period will see the rebirth of the class struggle on a scale not seen in decades. To prepare, socialists must study the history of the workers’ movement and of Trotskyism, the revolutionary socialist opposition to Stalinism, and the representatives of classical Marxism today.

This lecture will explain what genuine socialism is.

Joseph Kishore is the National Secretary of the Socialist Equality Party (US), the US section of the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI). He is a prominent writer for the World Socialist Web Site, the most widely-read socialist news publication in the world.

HIGH STAKES CULTURE The Politics of Blackface Then and Now: What’s in Your Yearbook? (March 11, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61528 61528-15126006@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 11, 2019 5:30pm

We are in a moment in which a ‘culture war’ – in large part about race -- has been ignited and is being stoked daily by activists across the political spectrum and by the President of the United States himself. This high stakes culture war is playing out across our cultural landscape in ways that we need to better understand and the practice of blackface as a political tool has become a particularly potent flash point.

Please join us for a conversation about ‘blackface – then and now.’ What is it? Why does it still matter? Why was it a thing in 1880 and 1980? Why is it all over the news now? And, how can we better understand the violent uses to which cultural appropriation more broadly gets put?

Come talk to scholars who work on questions like these about these questions and others you might have about blackface, redface and yellowface then and now.

With:
Stephen Berrey (American Culture and History), Bethany Hughes (American Culture and Native American studies), and Peter Ho Davies (English), and Matthew Countryman (Afroamerican and African studies, American Culture, History). Moderated by Angela Dillard (Residential College, Afroamerican and African Studies, and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education).

In her new book, Finding Voice: A Visual Arts Approach to Engaging Social Change, Kim Berman offers a theory and practice of resilient partnerships for social change. She argues for the importance of participatory visual storytelling through murals, paper prayers, Photovoice, and mapping in urban and rural collaborations. Using a feminist framework to look at "women on purpose," Berman speaks to the power and cost of sustaining public projects that address HIV-AIDS stigma, climate change, xenophobia, and unemployment.

Young Americans for Freedom at the University of Michigan is proud to host Ben Shapiro on March 12th in collaboration with the Young America's Foundation (YAF). Through this event, students and the general public will be able to hear from and participate in a Q/A with one of the nation's top conservative minds. More info on the event can be found at yaf.org, Twitter (@yafumich), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/YAFUMich/), and Instagram (@yafumich).

Ben Shapiro is editor-in-chief of The Daily Wire and host of "The Ben Shapiro Show," the top conservative podcast in the nation and now nationally-syndicated radio show. Shapiro is the author of seven nonfiction books; his newest work "The Right Side of History: How Reason and Moral Purpose Made the West Great" will be released on March 19th. He earned a BA in Political Science from UCLA in 2004 and graduated from Harvard Law School in 2007.
Shapiro has appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows around the nation, including "Fox and Friends" (Fox News), "In the Money" (CNN Financial), "The Dennis Prager Show," among others.

Young America's Foundation and the YAF at the University of Michigan chapter seek to educate students on conservative values that are otherwise absent on most college campuses. Shapiro has frequently addressed the issue of the Left's ideological stranglehold on academia and has worked to push back against that trend through fact and logic-based speeches and debates. "Facts don't care about your feelings" has become one of Ben Shapiro's trademark lines. He has appeared as the featured speaker at many conservative events on campuses nationwide, several of those appearances targeted by progressive and "Antifa" activists. Shapiro, an Orthodox Jew, has also worked to expose the anti-Israel and anti-Semitic motivations behind the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

Location: Diag - Central Campus
Organized By: International Youth and Students for Social Equality

The International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) at the University of Michigan has called a meeting and a demonstration demanding the immediate release of imprisoned whistleblower Chelsea Manning. A rally will be held on Wednesday, March 13 at 12 PM on The Diag in front of Hatcher Graduate Library. A subsequent meeting will take place on Thursday, March 14 at 7 PM in the Michigan League, Room A.

The IYSSE is declaring the imprisonment of Manning an egregious attack on democratic rights and a threat to press freedom. The courageous whistleblower was imprisoned on Friday for refusing to testify before a secret grand jury that is drawing up fabricated charges against WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange on behalf of the Trump administration. Beginning in 2010, Manning exposed major US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan including the infamous Collateral Murder cockpit video showing a US helicopter in Baghdad gunning down 16 unarmed civilians, including two Reuters journalists.

Wednesday’s demonstration is part of a series of coordinated rallies around the country, with the Socialist Equality Party (US) and the World Socialist Web Site (wsws.org). The perspective of this campaign places the basis of the defense of press freedom and democratic rights on the mobilization of the international working class. More information on the campaign to defend Manning can be found on the website: freechelsea.org

Please join us for the latest installment of the ELPP Lecture Series, presented by Professor David Hunter from the American University Washington College of Law. Professor Hunter will discuss the global campaign to hold international financial Institutions like the World Bank accountable for the environmental damage and human rights violations caused by their projects. This will include the implications of Jam v. International Finance Corporation (IFC), a case pending before the US Supreme Court that challenges the World Bank’s claim of immunity. The case was brought by local fishermen in coastal India harmed by a coal-fired power plant. The case reflects one of several strategies for applying minimum environmental and human rights standards to the activities of international organizations.

This event is free and open to the public.

David Hunter is Professor of international and comparative environmental law at American University's Washington College of Law. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Accountability Counsel, the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide-US, and the Project on Government Oversight. He is a Member Scholar of the Center for Progressive Reform and a member of the Organization of American States’ Expert Group on Environmental Law, the InterAmerican Network for Environmental Law’s Advisory Board, and the Strategic Advisors Group for the International Finance Corporation’s Compliance Advisor/Ombudsman. He is co-author of International Environmental Law & Policy (5th ed.) and Climate Change Law (2nd ed.). His research interests include human rights and the environment, environmental standards and accountability mechanisms in international finance, and climate change litigation, law and policy.

What is academic freedom? Is it relevant in this day and age? What does it mean at a global institution like the University of Michigan? How does the internationalization of higher education affect it? What does it mean to those who hail from abroad? Does academic freedom globalize? How do scholars and students who move across the world attend to its intricacies, obligations, and limitations? These are some of the questions that we will attempt to answer as part of our conversation. Please join us!

The public is welcome!
Lunch will be served.
Please RSVP. This is optional but does help us ensure that we provide enough food for everyone.

Human Flow Film Screening & Discussion

Over 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War II.
Human Flow, an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei, gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration.
The documentary elucidates both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact.

The University of Michigan is huge. While there are many resources and opportunities for student orgs, it is hard to stay on top of all of them.

HeForShe, a gender equality student org, saw this issue as one that especially impacted social justice-oriented student organizations, as the nature of social justice work requires community and a united effort. In the spirit of that, HeForShe decided to create the first gender equality student org summit called "The State of Gender Equality Orgs at U-M."

HeForShe invites all gender equality-related orgs to attend the event to meet other student leaders and find a way to make long-lasting connections, share resources, and build a coalition dedicated to achieving gender equality at the University of Michigan.

If your org would like to be represented at the event, RSVP using this link by March 27: https://goo.gl/forms/x60zsjddQYENLNnJ2

Participatory action research (PAR) is a powerful methodology for generating collective knowledge and change. We will describe PAR, its particular relevance to agroecology and food system work, and its application in our educator training program Laboratorios para la Vida (LabVida). LabVida has been working for eight years to train educators to use school gardens and food systems as venues for inquiry-based learning linking local and academic knowledge. We applied PAR to development and analysis of our training program, and invited participating educators to use PAR with their groups to explore and improve their food environments. PAR has proven to be an effective tool for generating small but significant changes in participants' narratives and practices.

Helda Morales is from Guatemala City and went to college there. She did graduate work in Costa Rica and then at U of M. Her research has documented the importance of traditional knowledge in constructing sustainable agriculture systems that avoid using harmful pesticides. Recently, she has focused on education and food systems, working with local urban and rural growers and farmers markets as well as international organizations. She is a founder and active member of AMA-AWA, the Alliance of Women in Agroecology.

Bruce Ferguson grew up in Kalamazoo, studied at Kalamazoo College. He did graduate work at the University of Michigan with John Vandermeer and Ivette Perfecto focusing on ecological succession and restoration. He currently does research and teaching in agroecology, food systems, and pedagogy. He is in Ann Arbor, spending part of his sabbatical year at U of M.

Their current research involves school gardens and food system education. They are both members of the Department of Agriculture, Society, and the Environment at El Colegio de la Frontera Sur in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, where they are part of a group working on scaling out agroecology to achieve more just and sustainable food systems. Together, Bruce and Helda coordinate Laboratorios para la Vida, a program that trains teachers to use gardens and food systems as educational tools.

#MeToo: A WeListen Staff Discussion

This session of WeListen is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome and lunch will be provided!

RSVP here: http://myumi.ch/LzEYO

The #MeToo movement has highlighted issues of sexual misconduct across the globe since going viral in October 2017. Initially centered around sexual misconduct in the workplace, the movement has since allowed survivors of sexual harassment and assault to speak about their experiences in broader contexts. The hashtag has reached the entertainment industry, higher education, politics, and more as people like Aziz Ansari, Matt Lauer, Kevin Spacey, Bill Cosby, Larry Nassar, and Brett Kavanaugh have their reputations called into question. Some remain unscathed after public scrutiny while others lose their jobs or are sentenced to prison time.

Have we seen true change in sexual misconduct policy since the hashtag began? Does the #MeToo movement violate the American value of "innocent until proven guilty?" Can allegations of sexual misconduct be managed by the court of public opinion or should all consequences be withheld until a trial has taken place?

Join us at this WeListen Staff Discussion to learn about the #MeToo movement and to participate in small group discussions about this complex topic.

The planning committee includes staff members from the Ginsberg Center, the International Institute, LSA Psychology, the Opportunity Hub, UM Poverty Solutions, and the UM Shared Services Center.

CRITICAL x DESIGN: Old, Raw or New: A (New?) Deal for the Digital Age (April 11, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62312 62312-15346472@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 11, 2019 12:00pm
Location: North Quad
Organized By: School of Information

American historians debate whether Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Depression-era legislation was, in fact, a New Deal, or perhaps an “Old Deal” or a “Raw Deal.” Considering multiple perspectives and voices, combined with the long sweep of history, stokes this lively, ongoing debate. In this CRITICAL x DESIGN talk, Rankin turns her attention to American computing in the 1960s and 1970s to consider whether the academic networks of that era may be inspiration for a Digital New Deal.

The users of 1960s and 1970s academic computing networks built, accessed, and participated in cooperative digital commons, developing now-quotidian practices of personal computing and social media. In the process, they became what she calls “computing citizens.” She uses several case studies to illustrate the dynamic - and unexpected - relationships among gender, community, computing, and citizenship, including the Old Deals and the Raw Deals of computing citizenship. How might these computing citizens inform crucial contemporary debates about technology and justice?

About the speaker
Dr. Joy Lisi Rankin is a feministi, anti-racist historian, and a Contributing Editor for Lady Science. She is also a consultant for the documentaries The Birth of BASIC and The Queen of Code and for the television show Girls Code. Rankin was an Exchange Scholar at MIT while earning her doctorate in History from Yale University, as well as a Visiting Scholar at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Prior to entering the academy, she had a successful career launching educational programs for students of all ages, which took her around the country. Her website is joyrankin.com.

The U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps and the University of Michigan Law School Present "The United States vs. Jackie Robinson"

In August 1944, Second Lieutenant Jack R. Robinson faced a court-martial at Camp Hood, Texas, related to two charges of insubordination of a superior officer following an incident on a bus in which he refused to obey Jim Crow-era laws.

Recently, Army historians have discovered the identity of an unheralded defense attorney who was instrumental in Jackie Robinson's acquittal. This attorney, Captain Robert H. Johnson, was a graduate of the University of Michigan and Michigan Law.
