Green New Deal: A WeListen Staff Discussion (October 9, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/67660 67660-16909330@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 9, 2019 11:00am
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Ginsberg Center

This WeListen session is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome and lunch will be provided!

RSVP here: http://bit.ly/WLOctober19

We will discuss the Green New Deal by learning about the policy itself while examining various perspectives on its content. We'll also consider the economic impact of the proposed policy, and discuss changes to the environment in the state of Michigan, and how the Green New Deal would potentially impact Michiganders.

Our aim is to bring liberals, conservatives, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic
- Practice discussing difficult topics with others,
- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives,
- Learn to productively challenge an idea, and
- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.

Questions? Email us at welistenstaff@umich.edu.

This event is supported by the WeListen Staff Series planning committee with members from the Ginsberg Center, the International Institute, LSA Psychology and UM Poverty Solutions.

Art and Design in the Age of Jane Austen (October 15, 2019 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64600 64600-16394976@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 15, 2019 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

We will discuss Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, in which she alludes to issues such as the unmarried woman, inherited wealth, abduction, and sexual scandal, as well as the Napoleonic wars. Austen knew that contemporary readers understood the social and political issues of their day and that they could envision the private homes of her protagonists without elaborate descriptions. To enrich your appreciation of Austen, the course for those 50 and over will meet Tuesdays, 3-4:30 p.m. from October 15 through November 12. Instructor Mary Lindner will address social mores, neoclassical architecture, interior design, and clothing. Many of them can be seen in recent BBC videos, parts of which we will watch as we cover the novel’s rich background.

The Community of Food, Society, and Justice Conference (October 18, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/63979 63979-16051362@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 18, 2019 8:00am

The ways that we meet the nutritional needs of our communities, while also protecting the planet, promoting healthy lives, and ensuring food justice are among the greatest challenges facing our Nation and the world today. Centuries of unsustainable agricultural practices and inequitable food distribution place our food systems in peril. How to address these challenges and feed a hungry population raise transformative issues for our communities and academics committed to sustainability and food justice throughout the world.

The Community of Food, Society & Justice Conference will engage students, faculty, staff, farmers, and the community in rigorous dialogue around these challenges. The conference will be structured around a foundation of interdisciplinary scholarship that agrees that recognizing structural relations of power are necessary in order to confront race, class, and gender privileges on issues such as food justice.

Our keynote speaker is investigative reporter, Tracie McMillan, traciemcmillan.com, author of The American Way of Eating: Undercover at Walmart, Applebee’s, Farm Fields and the Dinner Table, and “The New Face of Hunger”.

This is the inspiring story of how Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, alongside a team of researchers, parents, friends, and community leaders, discovered that the children of Flint, Michigan, were being exposed to lead in their tap water—and then battled her own government and a brutal backlash to expose that truth to the world. Paced like a scientific thriller, What the Eyes Don’t See reveals how misguided austerity policies, broken democracy, and callous bureaucratic indifference placed an entire city at risk.

And at the center of the story is Dr. Mona herself—an immigrant, doctor, scientist, and mother whose family’s activist roots inspired her pursuit of justice.

OLLI Reads invites OLLI members and others to read together and discuss two books a year. This fall we are collaborating with Great Michigan Read, and other community partners, to enjoy participating in a wider project. Michigan Humanities’ Great Michigan Read creates a statewide discussion each year on the humanities themes of a selected book.

Mona Hanna-Attisha, MD, is the founder and director of the Michigan State University and Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative. Currently an associate professor of pediatrics and human development at the MSU College of Human Medicine, she has been named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World for her role in uncovering the Flint water crisis and leading recovery efforts.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute membership is not required to attend this event.

Location: Weill Hall (Ford School)
Organized By: Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP)

Free and open to the public. Reception to follow.

Our democracy suffers from a lack of listening and an overabundance of people not feeling heard. In her talk, Dr. Cramer will explain what she heard while inviting herself into the conversations of people in small communities in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. That project led to a collaboration with a team of technology experts at MIT and partner nonprofit, Cortico. Kathy will talk about the community-driven listening network they invented, the Local Voices Network, and share what they've learned so far from chapters in Wisconsin, New York, Massachusetts, and Alabama.

Katherine Cramer (B.A. University of Wisconsin-Madison 1994, Ph.D. University of Michigan 2000) is a Professor of Political Science and the Natalie C. Holton Chair of Letters & Science. During the 2018-2019 academic year she is a Visiting Professor with the Laboratory for Social Machines at the MIT Media Lab. She is an affiliate faculty member in the UW-Madison Elections Research Center, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, LaFollette School of Public Affairs, Institute for Research on Poverty, Center for Community and Nonprofit Studies, Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education, and Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems. Her work focuses on the way people in the United States make sense of politics and their place in it. She is known for her innovative approach to the study of public opinion, in which she uses methods like inviting herself into the conversations of groups of people to listen to the way they understand public affairs. Her award-winning book, The Politics of Resentment: Rural Consciousness in Wisconsin and the Rise of Scott Walker, brought to light rural resentment toward cities and its implications for contemporary politics, and was a go-to source for understanding votes in the 2016 presidential election (University of Chicago Press, 2016). She has also published as Katherine Cramer Walsh and is the author of Talking about Race: Community Dialogues and the Politics of Difference (University of Chicago Press, 2007), and Talking about Politics: Informal Groups and Social Identity in American Life (University of Chicago Press, 2004). She was named a Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters in 2018 and is the recipient of the 2018 APSA Heinz Eulau Award for the best article published in Perspectives on Politics (with Benjamin Toff), the 2017 APSA Qualitative and Multi-Method Research section Giovanni Sartori Award for the best book developing or using qualitative methods published in 2016; a finalist for the 2017 APSA Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award for the best book on government, politics, or international affairs; the 2012 APSA Qualitative and Multi-Methods Research Section award for the best qualitative or multi-method submission to the American Political Science Review; a 2006 UW-Madison Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award; a 2012-2014 UW-Madison Vilas Associate Award; a 2015-17 Leon Epstein Faculty Fellowship; and a 2017-2022 UW-Madison Kellett Mid-Career Faculty Researcher Award. In 2019 she was elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Wellness in Color (October 23, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68152 68152-17018327@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 23, 2019 5:30pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: National Center for Institutional Diversity

As students of color at the University of Michigan, some experiences can cause or worsen stress, anxiety, and isolation. Everyday experiences of racism, discrimination, or just subtly being made to feel “different” or like we don’t belong can cause our academics and social lives to suffer. This negatively impacts our mental wellbeing. Many students of color face the challenge of finding supportive and trusting resources that relate to their mental health experiences. Finding the solution to this lack of support has been a conversation that's been halted on campus for too long. At Wellness in Color, we aim to tackle this challenge by facilitating dialogues to initiate the mental health conversation in our community.

We invite you to join us to talk about how students of color have persevered despite difficult moments at Michigan and how faculty and staff can play a role in creating a learning environment where students of color can thrive.

This student pre-conference is designed and facilitated by U-M students of color as part of the national Young, Gifted, @Risk, and Resilient Conference which aims to promote the mental health and well being among students of color.

Mark your calendars for the 2019 Young, Gifted, @Risk, & Resilient (YGARR) national conference at the University of Michigan! This day-long conference will bring together leading researchers, practitioners, administrators, faculty, and students to focus on campus climate and mental health among young adult/college students of color.

The current dialogue on mental health among college students has become a nationwide priority. Students of color in particular are tasked with navigating unique circumstances that can negatively influence their mental health, including racial/ethnic discrimination disparities in service utilization that can be exacerbated by discrimination experiences, treatment related to immigration status, and racialized sexual and gender marginalization. Yet, there is a relative dearth of scholarship specifically focused on the roles and impacts of campus climates characterized by these types of experiences on the mental health and well-being of college students of color. Such gaps in knowledge inhibit our ability to fully provide high quality, responsive, and equitable and inclusive supports and services.

This national conference is a collaboration between The Steve Fund, the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) at the University of Michigan. The conference curriculum is informed by the longstanding work of The Steve Fund and the latest research and insights from scholars and practitioners across the country. Conference participants will explore national and campus socio-political contexts and take away best practices in order to foster spaces and places that promote emotional well-being for students of color. We hope you will join us as we work towards advancing research and informing practice to better support students of color across the country.

We welcome you to visit the conference website to learn more. If you have any questions, please email Laura Sánchez-Parkinson at lasanche@umich.edu.

Why National Policy Still Fails Black Women in the United States (October 25, 2019 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64557 64557-16388909@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 25, 2019 5:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

This course for those 50 and over will examine how the social and legal structural oppression of Black American women is perpetuated in America systematically and structurally. We will critically analyze how black women remain socially subjugated in spite of claims of gendered equality through the analysis of theoretical concepts associated with colonialism and imperialism.

Instructor Tanya Omolo is dual degree graduate student at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and the School of Social Work at The University of Michigan. Her primary research and policy focus predominately concentrates on the intersection of gender, equity, and human rights for women in developing countries. She received her B.A.in Sociology from Pomona College, concentrating on gender, race, and inequity. Prior to pursuing her Master in Public Policy, Tanya managed the Workers’ Compensation program for Morley Builders, a large construction company in Los Angeles, where she created and led a program focused on providing injured workers with a voice and outlet for all concerns related to their injury.

Tanya hopes to use her education to continue her advocacy efforts and create new strategies and programs for a more equitable global community and women’s advancement.

You are cordially invited to this year’s “Dia de Los Muertos” event taking place on November 1st from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the School of Public Health’s Community Room 1680. MENA (Middle Eastern and North African) Public Health, La Salud, and PHSAD (Public Health Students of African Descent) have partnered to present a Dia de Los Muertos event which is meant to commemorate all the lives lost to any discrimination or racism in the U.S. and internationally.

Dia de Los Muertos stems from Mexican traditions and originates from Aztec practices. We use this day to celebrate, not mourn, the lives of our beloved departed and rejoice by sharing ofrendas that remember the individual as they were in life. Although this festive occasion is meant to welcome our loved ones, there are many lives that were forgotten both in life and death. These lives were victimized, racialized, and prosecuted during life as a result of structural racism and exclusion. This year, we hope to raise awareness for the lives that were silenced and empower future practitioners to advocate for these communities and prevent future injustices.
We celebrate in community to provide space for the living and dead, and invite you to join us for an evening of activities, dialogue, food and performances! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Location: North Quad
Organized By: Barger Leadership Institute

What would you do with an idea and $10,000?

The Capstone Experience at the Barger Leadership Institute (BLI) supports undergraduate students in designing and implementing evidence-based, collaborative projects that seek to bring about small (and big) wins for the complex, ambiguous problems that exist in our deeply interconnected world.

Join us at one of the sessions to learn about Capstone and meet like-minded students with ideas and skills to collaborate with. Teams, individuals, BLI members or those just interested in learning more are all welcome! Each session is broken into two parts: first, learn about the Capstone Experience; second, engage in a speed-dating exercise to meet other undergraduates interested in building a team.

This event is perfect for: people who want to learn more about the Capstone Experience; people who have an idea or project but need partners; people who have a passion but not a project; people who have skills that would benefit a team but no team.

Question? Reach out to BLI Academic Program Manager Fatema Haque, haque@umich

We want diverse perspectives to be available to all ♥

Liberty in North Korea at the University of Michigan is excited to invite two North Korean advocacy fellows from the LiNK HQ, Jeongyol Ri and Ilhyeok Kim, come to campus on November 6th, 2019!

Join us as they reflect on their first-hand experiences as North Korean escapees, and their adjustment after relocation.

━━
Jeongyol Ri was born in 1998, and spent his childhood in Pyongsong. Math was his most notable passion— by the time he was in elementary school, he had already in mastered a middle school math curriculum. He later went on to represent the the North Korean team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Over the course of four competitions, he had obtained a four silver medals. His success led the North Korean government to offer him a job, but he did not want to work for the regime. The Hong Kong IMO was Jeongyol’s last chance to defect while abroad; he was only 18 years old. While the rest of his team was packing for the return home, he snuck out and sought asylum at the South Korean consulate. In 2016 Jeongyol resettled in South Korea and in 2019 started Seoul National University.

Ilhyeok Kim was born in 1995 in Saetbyeol when the famine had just begun. As a result of the famine, his father became a broker who helped defectors in South Korea send money to relatives still in North Korea. When Ilhyeok was 12, his father was caught and imprisoned, but was eventually released for owning a Chinese cell phone. From that day onward, the government kept a close eye on his family. Despite the repercussions they would face if they escaped, they bravely decided to flee. In 2011 they arrived in South Korea. Ilhyeok aspires to work for the United Nations one day.

U.S. Energy Transitions in the Trump Administration (November 21, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/69079 69079-17242640@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 21, 2019 12:00pm
Location: Jeffries Hall
Organized By: Michigan Law Environmental and Energy Law Program

Please join us for the latest installment in the ELPP Lecture Series. Professor Alexandra Klass from the University of Minnesota Law School will discuss recent developments in U.S. energy law, policy, economics, and technology. Although President Trump and his cabinet Secretaries, particularly at the Interior Department, Energy Department, and Environmental Protection Agency, have announced dramatic policy shifts away from those pursued during the Obama Administration, the new administration’s ability to accomplish its goals is in some instances helped and in other instances hindered by existing federal and state laws as well as private sector technology and economic trends. Topics will include the shift away from the use of coal and toward natural gas and renewable energy in the electricity sector; the use of federal public lands to develop oil, natural gas, coal, wind, and solar energy; developments in technology and law associated with hydraulic facturing ("fracking"); and controversies over new oil and gas pipelines such as the Dakota Access and Keystone XL Pipelines.

This event is free and open to the public.

Professor Alexandra B. Klass teaches and writes in the areas of energy law, environmental law, natural resources law, tort law, and property law. Her recent scholarly work, published in many of the nation’s leading law journals, addresses regulatory challenges to integrating more renewable energy into the nation’s electric grid, transportation electrification, oil and gas transportation infrastructure, and the use of eminent domain for electric transmission lines and pipelines. She is a co-author of Energy Law: Concepts and Insights Series (Foundation Press 2017), Energy Law and Policy (West Academic Publishing 2d ed. 2018), Natural Resources Law: A Place-Based Book of Problems and Cases (Wolters Kluwer, 4th ed., 2018), and The Practice and Policy of Environmental Law (Foundation Press, 4th ed. 2017). Professor Klass was named the Stanley V. Kinyon Teacher of the Year for 2009-2010, and she served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2010-2012. She was a Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard Law School in 2015. She is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor and in prior years was the Julius E. Davis Professor of Law and the Solly Robins Distinguished Research Fellow.

Prior to her teaching career, Professor Klass was a partner at Dorsey & Whitney LLP in Minneapolis, where she specialized in environmental law, natural resources, and land use matters. During her years in private practice from 1993-2004, she handled cases in federal and state trial and appellate courts involving contaminated property, wetlands, environmental review, mining, environmental rights, zoning, eminent domain, and environmental torts. She clerked for the Honorable Barbara B. Crabb, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin from 1992-1993.

Each month, Business+Impact hosts an interactive design micro-charette themed around one of these goals. During the month of November, we will address Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities. Three award-winning Ross faculty members will share their research in an informal setting and students will have the opportunity to brainstorm possible next steps for how the research can be applied to real-world applications that make a positive impact.

Faculty and subjects of research include:

Jun Li: New Research Looks At Ways to Help Stop Airbnb Racial Discrimination

A. Yeşim Orhun: Why poor families are paying more for everyday items like toilet paper

Chris Rider: Career mobility and racial diversity in law firms

Due to high interest in these workshops, we must cap attendance at 25. We aim to keep the numbers of participants at a size that can accommodate the space capacity of the +Impact Studio and provide meaningful group discussion.

The BLI Dinner with... series offers a valuable opportunity for Leadership Fellows to enjoy a dinner with a BLI stakeholder and get a behind the curtain view of their leadership journey. Dinner attendees build community, share leadership interests, and cultivate meaningful connections in an informal setting.

BLI is excited to host Sen. Stephanie Chang for our next Dinner With!

Sen. Stephanie Chang, the first Asian American woman to be elected to the Michigan Legislature, worked as a community organizer in Detroit for nearly a decade before serving two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives.

She served as state director for NextGen Climate Michigan, alumni engagement and evaluation coordinator for the Center for Progressive Leadership in Michigan, deputy director for the Campaign for Justice and as an organizer for Michigan United/One United Michigan. She also worked as a community engagement coordinator for the James and Grace Lee Boggs School and assistant to Grace Lee Boggs, an activist, writer, and speaker.

The senator also is a co-founder and past president of Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote-Michigan, and she served as a mentor with the Detroit Asian Youth Project.

In the state House, Sen. Chang led the way on air quality protection, education, criminal justice reforms, improving economic opportunities, and affordable, safe drinking water. She passed bipartisan legislation on a range of issues including female genital mutilation, nitrous oxide “whip-its”, reentry services for wrongfully convicted individuals who were exonerated, and more. She quickly earned her colleagues’ respect and was named chair of the Progressive Women’s Caucus in her second term. She also served on the leadership team for the House Democratic Caucus both terms and was a co-founder of the Asian Pacific American Legislative Caucus.

Chang earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degrees in public policy and social work from the University of Michigan. She lives in Detroit with her husband, Sean Gray, and two young daughters.

PLEASE NOTE: This event is exclusively for BLI Fellows
