Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Citizens Climate Lobby

In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Ann Arbor chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL), in partnership with the CCL Asian Pacific Action Team, are pleased to host a virtual screening of the award-winning films, Anote’s Ark and Love Note to an Island. We invite you to view the films in the comfort of your home, then participate in an online panel discussion with filmmaker, Lulu DeBoer, and returned Peace Corps volunteers who served in Kiribati, Brady Fergusson and Dr. Michael Roman.

For complete details on viewing the film and joining the panel discussion, click on the Eventbrite Registration link.

Optional: we invite our attendees to help support the people of Kiribati by making a donation to the Kiribati Climate Action Network (KiriCAN) through our GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-a-submerging-island

About the films:

Anote’s Ark: The Pacific Island nation of Kiribati is one of the most remote places on the planet, seemingly far-removed from the pressures of modern life. Yet it is one of the first countries that must confront the existential dilemma of our time: imminent annihilation from sea-level rise. While Kiribati’s former President Anote Tong races to find a way to protect his nation’s people and maintain their dignity, many Kiribati are already seeking safe harbor overseas. Set against the backdrop of international climate and human rights negotiations, Anote’s struggle to save his nation is intertwined with the fate of Tiemeri, a young mother who fights to migrate her family to New Zealand. At stake is the survival of Tiemeri’s family, the Kiribati people, and 4,000 years of Kiribati culture.
Love Note to an Island: This moving short film by Lulu DeBoer shows her visiting her home island of Kiribati for the first time in over 20 years, only to find that climate change will soon wash it away. But instead of despair, the love and hope of the country spurs her on to find solutions to adapt

Student-athletes represent a distinguished population of resilient and high-performing individuals. However, for student-athletes of color, winning often requires them to also defeat the mighty foe of racism.

In honor of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, this Community Conversation will include a panel of mental health experts who work with student-athletes as they center racism as a mental health crisis, address the impact of racial trauma on the mental and physical well-being of student-athletes of color, and offer recommendations for healing and supporting this unique population of students.

Please join us for this conversation to learn how you may be a ‘player' in this game! Open to student-athletes of color and all who support them.

Join the Women of Color Task Force for its 2nd annual Juneteenth observance event. The theme for our event is “Improving Intercultural Race Relations to Develop Intercultural Solidarity.”

Juneteenth, also called Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, Liberation Day, or Emancipation Day, is the designated holiday commemorating the freedom of the slaves in the United States, traditionally observed annually on June 19th. President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had officially outlawed slavery in Texas and the other states in rebellion against the Union almost two and a half years earlier on January 1, 1863. Enforcement of the Proclamation generally relied on the advancement of the Union troops. The anniversary of the June 19, 1865 date recognizes the day that the announcement by Union Army Major General Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom from slavery and the end of the Civil War was delivered to Galveston, Texas.

The Juneteenth holiday is celebrated on Saturday, June 19, 2021, but we invite you to join us for our celebration on Friday, June 18th, from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm.

Share your photos from past Juneteenth celebrations and events organized by your community and/or family!! If you have a picture to share, you may upload your photo by midnight on June 4th into this Google form: https://forms.gle/bMZ46tGH1YedgE1a7. Submissions will be reviewed, and selected photos will be included in a slideshow that will be shown at the virtual Juneteenth event.

20 Things Everyone Should Know about Slavery (June 18, 2021 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83859 83859-21555873@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, June 18, 2021 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Social Solutions

Panelists will seek to generate a discussion about how historical knowledge might contribute solutions to the problems of contemporary expressions of human slavery and offer new pathways to democracy and freedom.

Among American historians, it is generally agreed that the historical study of chattel slavery covered about 250 years: from 1619 to 1865 in the United States and to 1888 in Brazil and the Americas. Yet slavery has not disappeared. Globally, an estimated 27–40 million persons are victims of involuntary servitude. What if these contemporary forms of human labor exploitation constitute a “Third Slavery”?

Introductions will be given by Dr. Earl Lewis, director of the Center for Social Solutions and the Thomas C. Holt Distinguished University Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies, History, and Public Policy.

The roundtable discussion will be chaired by Dr. Daina Ramey Berry, the Oliver H. Radkey Regents Professor of History at the University of Texas at Austin. Panelists include:

David W. Blight, the Sterling Professor of History and director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University;

Ambassador (ret.) Luis C.deBaca, a Senior Fellow at the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University;

Duncan Jepson is the managing director of Liberty Shared, a legal advocacy non-profit that aims to prevent human trafficking;

Genevieve LeBaron, Professor of Politics and Director of Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Sheffield;

James Alexander Robinson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies with emphasis in Black Studies at the Metropolitan State University, and curator of the Third Slavery archive for the Center for Social Solutions.

Virtual Summer Showcase is the culminating event for the DCERP Fellows where students present about their projects and the insights they have gained.

Through the Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program (DCERP), undergraduate students from the U-M spend the summer working with a wide variety of Detroit non-profits on research and creative projects led by the organizations themselves. DCERP fellows attend program meetings and form small collaborative learning groups that delve into topics of mutual interest, such as getting to know the city, its culture and history through a social justice lens, community engagement, personal growth and professional development.

Asian American History: Past and Present with Dr. Manan Desai (August 3, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/84778 84778-21624935@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, August 3, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location

This lecture and discussion examines key moments in American history that illustrate the ways Asian Americans have been racialized in the U.S, how they have been subject to legal and extralegal exclusion and discrimination, as well as the ways communities have organized in resistance. Using key case studies spanning the late 19th century to the present moment, we will consider: What lessons from the past can we use to understand our present? What role can Asian Americans continue to play in the ongoing struggle against white supremacy and social inequalities?

This lecture is sponsored by the Center for Engineering Diversity & Outreach (CEDO), the APID/A Staff Association and Graduate Rackham International (GRIN).

This lecture is part one of a three part series on combating anti-Asian hate, harassment and racism throughout the 2021/2022 academic year.
